Middle Earth. A vast world full of might and magic in varied forms. The world has recently been enjoying another era of peace, with the destruction of the great evil Sauron and the One Ring, his instrument of power. In the last age, an unlikely band of adventurers succeeded on a quest to take the One Ring to Mount Doom, where the even less likely heroes, in the form of hobbits, cast the ring into the fires of the mountain. It is now the 240th year of the Fourth Age. The armies of the dark lord scattered after his defeat, with reports of orcs becoming less common, the rebuilding of the great nations of Middle Earth have been going well. Even the dwarves have managed to reclaim Moria, enjoying a new time of wealth and plenty. While the lands of Rohan and Gondor work in concert to maintain the lands of men. The majority of the elves have left Middle Earth, though many remain, content to live out their lives here. The land has recovered as well, with the great Fangorn Forest recovering nicely.

Unfortunately, no era of peace lasts forever, and those who remain to watch after Middle Earth, are beginning to see things stir again. Things moving in the darkness, strange howls in the night reminiscent of the last great war. Attacks have begun to occur again, and there are whispers of some great new threat attempting to take the place of Sauron and usurp his throne of malice. Recently, however, the signs have grown more severe, and even stranger events have begun unfolding. Rumors speak of a former servant of the dark lord, a grunt in one of his great armies that had risen to prominence for his scholarly pursuits amid mindless abominations, as well as his ability to craft. His name was forgotten, and his descendants ignored, until recently, one such descendant made a grand discovery. The means of crafting items of great power, particularly, the hidden knowledge of creating rings of power. However, unlike the former master of his predecessors, he claimed to want only the protection of Middle Earth, to see it flourish under the rule of men. While the rulers of the world were hesitant to accept the offer of gifts from such a creature, over time, he was able to convince them to at least hear them out. As such, a meeting was arranged in a small village within the realm of men. Where those serving the lords of Middle Earth would deem whether or not his intent was pure. Or, if like in the past, only deception.

Noting the strange shift in the world, the Valar decided to again intercede in fear that their greatest enemy was plotting to crown a new champion to carry out his dark will. New beings were created in image of the Maia of previous ages, wizards that were capable of wielding great magics. These individuals have only just begun appearing again, and are mostly unknown and unlearned, needing their own degree of guidance in order to protect Middle Earth.

Rules:

  1. All standard Iwaku rules apply. Please follow them.
  2. For the most part, most types of content are welcome. This is high fantasy and can get bloody. However, anything that borders on the red star territory, keep it in PM's, please.
  3. For now, I will be allowing anyone who wants to join to play up to 2 characters, if you'd like. Be mindful that this may change with enough interest.
  4. You may play Men, Elves, Dwarves, or Hobbits. At this point, due to the unique natures of many of the cast, we are looking for a more mundane variety of characters. You can be interesting without being super unique!
  5. Characters may receive rings of power. These rings will grant unique powers and abilities to individuals who wear them. All powers will be subject to approval.
  6. You may be from virtually any region of Middle Earth, so long as it makes sense for you to be involved.
  7. You will likely have to edit your character sheet from time to time. The sheets will be monitored just in case. Don't be that guy.
  8. Please be king to each other. I cannot stand players who like to berate other players or GM's. In one form or another, we are all friends here.
  9. If you have any questions, I welcome you to ask, and I will gladly provide any answers I can to the best of my ability.
  10. My posting expectations tend to be lax, but, if at all possible, I prefer at least a post per week from each player. I understand that life happens and people get busy, though.
  11. Communication is of the utmost importance. If you lose interest or are going to be busy, let me know! We can work around anything or give you a proper send off.
  12. Thank you for reading through all of these, if you did. I greatly appreciate it. If you did so, let me know who your favorite LotR character is.

𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑝𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 : unlike most elfs, atalanta carries a pair of long cat-like claws for her main weapon + hand-crafted bow & arrow + set of curved black daggers with ruby red lining + a first-aid kit [ with bandages / herbal remedies / small tools / etc ] + small clay-bound notebook [ mostly filled with drawings of herbs and what their purposes are for & tendency to whack people with said notebook when they're being idiots ] !

𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 : sly + adventurous + calculative + witty + selfless + observant + inventive + respectful [ in her own way but one must earn her respect first ] + hardworking [ although give her a warm place to lay and she'll be the laziest elf you'll ever see ] + calm / patient [ rarely gets angry unless provoked with the stupidity of people not taking care of themselves ] + out-spoken + reckless + well-mannered [ in public unless she's with close-friends or by herself ] + self-sacrificing + rebellious + mysterious + mischievous + a rather chaotic & hot mess + stubborn + sarcastic !

𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 : this might be out of proportions or rather off time-line but given the fact this information doesn't exactly have dates so i'm just going to mix and match things. i'll be happy to change things around if this doesn't work but i will be doing more research to figure out the exact timeline and mixing her history to fit it. i did do some research regarding avari / rhun / last desert since i wanted to be as accurate as possible while adding my own twist to it but i did add a few things regarding elves from shannara chronicles. please be warned of dark themes such as character death and abusive will be mentioned throughout her history.

atalanta was born to the east called rhûn where she grew up secluded from the other avari who had refused to join the great journey. her parents were simple-minded elves, preferring to live away from the others — closer to the sea, which is where she came to love swimming and many water-related activities. a normal childhood with no interactions of those her age other than the endless amount of large cats native to rhûn — where her love of cats started. atalanta grew up learning many techniques and herbal remedies from her elven parents who were well-known for their remedies and semi-advanced medical procedures with species all over coming to seek medical help, but peace never lasted. atalanta soon knew just how evil people could be. avari who fell into the melkor trap slaughtered their entire village, becoming beasts known as orcs. some avari turned wild upon entering the wilderness but soon fell trap to melkor's ways, turning atalanta's world upside down. she witnessed her parents being slaughtered right before her eyes. they ripped her parents to shreds, unable to be recognizable from the torture they faced.

atalanta's uncles on her mother's side took her away from her desolated home, running to the desert with nothing but the clothes on their backs. stumbling upon a small desolated village in the last desert [ similar to the Gobi desert, which is a large desert / brushland region in east asia where it covers parts of northern / northeastern china + southern mongolia. the altai mountains / grasslands / steppes of mongolia on the north & taklamakan desert by the west & also bound it hexi corridor / tibetan plateau to the southwest & northern china plain to the southeast. gobi, according to research, is the location of several important cities along the silk road ]. Atalanta grew up with her two homosexual uncles, doing their best to be as normal as possible after witnessing a massacre but just as they relaxed their vigilance everything was turned upside down when men came into the village hunting down elves for money. she witnessed her strong-willed and chaotic uncles thrown to the ground, listening to their screams of agony as the mercenaries cut off their ears and flesh.

leaving behind blood flowing down the desert streets, atalanta soon put her medical knowledge to the test. dragging her unresponsive uncles into their small hut created out of clay and straw, she got to work using the last of her parents' herbs. Her uncles grew better with tentative care, her uncles who were once noble warriors; taught atalanta how to fight. her younger uncle taught her how to become ruthless while her older uncle taught her to be as swift as water but harsh like ice. she learned to be elegant but ruthless. a dangerous rose waiting to spring at the right moment. atalanta grew into a beautiful woman with midnight locks and cat-like hues leaving men and women alike falling at her feet for her hand in marriage. but her uncles were always there to beat everyone that dared touch their niece.

years afterward, her uncles packed up everything and left to travel further with atalanta in tow. together, they built a kingdom from nothing. the first known kingdom of the last desert. a myth too many people, but soon became a safe-haven for all species alike to gather. a well-known kingdom to those who lived in the last desert but were unknown too many outside of its borders. atalanta's uncles became the first kings until they died of assassination leaving the prospering kingdom to their niece. she didn't give up until the assassin was found and hung out in the square.

atalanta grew into a great queen despite her young age to cats and humans alike. instead of horses, she rode massive felines to fight in the arena to show outsiders their strength. she fell in love with a human who showed her things beyond her wildest dreams. teaching her what laid outside her desert borders but in atalanta's mind she fell in love with his personality. his goofy, loveable self that made her laugh at every hour. never failing to bring excitement to her days. soon after marriage, atalanta conceived three beautiful baby girls which she cherished beyond belief. half-elf / half-human, the family lived peacefully until a disease unknown to atalanta ravaged the small kingdom. a disease brought by an unsuspecting traveler that wiped out half of the population; including her four-year-old daughters and husband.

atalanta continues to run her small kingdom hoping to push her grievances to the back of her mind, becoming more reckless to her health than before. with only the love of her people and many, many felines to keep her distracted from her heart.

𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒𝑠 : affection [ head pats are lovely ] + domestic & wild cats + dance [ traditional dance from her home ] + warm weather [ the hotter the better ] + helping others [ refuses to take credit or gifts in return ] + fashion [ although her fashion taste is rather revealing she doesn't hesitate to show off ] + chicken + being high up [ climbing trees is a must ] + swimming + medicine + children [ once had three daughters but that is a tale for another time ] + the night [ isn't very active during the day ] + rain + herbal teas + peaches !

𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒𝑠 : shoes [ has never once worn shoes ] + closed spaces [ has to always see some light or feel the air otherwise ] + cold weather [ turns into a literal burrito at the slightest breeze ] + close-combat [ not as strong as she is in long-ranged combat but she can hold her own ] + animal abuse + not being able to do anything to ease people's pain + being unable to help medicinally + abusive people + those who strive to prey on the weak + power-seeking individuals + being indoors [ enjoys sleeping outside more than anything ] + constricting clothes !

𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 : legolas ! no longer apart of the thread !

Personality:
Ward is a quiet person as he normally doesn't have much to say to people since they mind their own business and he minds his, and that's how he likes it since someone digging into his personal information could reveal his heritage and bring about a mob, ill treatment, or have people refuse to deal with him and get him the supplies he needs. This also contributs to why he only stops into town for supplies and repairs and nothing more.

He is slow to open up to others because of this fear and it can make him irritable when a total stranger starts asking too many questions. So far the only people he trust are the remnants of the rangers he works with who know and keep his secret from the world allowing him to live in peace in the forest as he protects it. The great kindness shown to him by his mentor and rangers moves him to help others in various ways,

While he is motivated to hunt down bandits to keep the various villages and settlments safe, his brutal orcish side delights when he gets to tear bandits apart. He hates this side of himself yet loves indulging in it, as it is a hateful, vicious, self fulfilling, disgusting side of himself. He seeks to quell it as he meditates in the forest but every time he protects others he finds himself indulging in it as he slaughters bandits.

Ward is quiet, keeps to himself, doesn't trust quickly, always wary of being found out and attacked (sorta paranoid), loves to fight more than he would like to, honest, caring, and he has a brutal and destructive side he hates yet loves to indulge in.

Bio:
Concieved of a married Elven women through an Uruk that forced himself upon her, due to the nature of an elf's soul she began to slowly wither away after this. However Ward was concieved, and they were unsure whether he was the husband or the orc's child, as such she went to great lengths to survive till birth. His birth however reavealed everything and the couple were disgusted at him and named him Child of shame in Human tongue and unloved in elvish tongue. Elves being mostly caring and peaceful creatures however found themselves unable to cast him aside to die despite being the abomination he was, a reminder of war, Sauron, Morgoth, and their great evils.

Yet he was also born of the fair and peaceful folk, so his nature was uncertain. The now widowed father however not wanting a reminder of the shame and disgrace turned him over to an old ranger (Eonmór) who still lingered with the rangers. The old man contemplated killing the child to rid the world of a potential threat, but the boy could understand the languages of birds and beasts and he decided to raise him as an heir for his position.

He grew up with the old man in the woods learning the ways of the ranger. This went on for many years, until the old man found himself on his deathbed and he looked upon the now fully grown child of elf and orc he raised, he gave him new names and told him to live on as a new person. Eonmór explained that he told the rangers of Ward, and that they were willing to accept him into their ranks now that he had proven himself.

Grateful to the old man for a second chance at life and everything that had been done for him since he took him in, he promised to live an honest and upright life and to protect others like he himself had been protected. From that day on he set about his duties and met with the other rangers on occasion as he was required. However the shame and rejection of those of the outside world never left him, and still stays fresh in his mind even after many decades.

Abilities
fb15d3c56e326681d440b64e09830581.jpg

Elven Agility:
Inhereted from his Elven heritage he is able to use both hands with equal skill. In addition he is able to react quickly and make slight adjustments when attacked to dodge or lessen blows.

Orc Strength & Endurance:
Due to his orc heritage he is able to carry more, move faster, and hit harder, and last longer in battle than most people his size. He uses this to his advantage to wear heavy armor and be of equal speed to the other rangers with more protection, though he is able to take more hits than a man his size due to his tough leathery skin. Like the Uruk, he is highly resistant to pain.

Heavy Armor Proficiency:
His mentor having seen his strength put him into heavy armor when he was younger and taught him how to use it properly and move silently in it using layers of fabric and padding between the metal plates.

Herbal Medicine:
Through Ranger training he learned how to treat most wounds with a selection of herbs and minerals.

Keen Senses:
A combination of an orc's perceptive sense of smell, ability to see in the dark, an elf's keen eyes and ears allows him to be extremely aware of everything around him. However this is a weakness in an urban setting where his senses can easily overwhelm him.

Marksmanship:
Through training and instruction of his mentor he learned how to use a bow with great skill, however he is also able to throw and use spears, daggers, and axes with great skill and prefers the spear as he can get great force behind one.

Equiptment

Combat Gear:
Padded plate armor, two handed longsword (spiked guard for dealing with armor), two shortswords, three throwing spears, two handaxes (double as hammers for pitons), a bow, and 24 arrows
Rangers Survial Gear:
Dark Grey & Forest Green reversible waxed cloak with hood (camoflauge and keeping the rain off), backpack, a bedroll, cooking utensils & spices, a mess kit, a tinderbox, 10 days of rations, a waterskin, fifty feet of hemp rope, 10 pitons, a steel mirror, and a container of medicinal herbs for wound treatment.

Extra

If you want to get to know him more, please watch all four in order.

@blueblossomtea @The_Vargamor I was reading up on elves for this character to accurately represent canon information, and there's some interesting info here you might want to know. Such as most elves are married by 50 and those who aren't have strange fates (and that they can tell when an elf is unmarried), also due to the nature of their souls they only marry once. Ah sorry nerded out, if you're interested here's the info! Most of the useful info is at the bottom under Characteristics.

@The Dapper Mog I've got a question about Rhun... what's it like in your RP? Not much is said of it in the third age on so it's entirely up to you. I want to know what you've got in mind for it since some characters have things that hinge upon Rhun being a specific something.

@blueblossomtea I've got a few questions about your character if you don't mind my asking.
Not much is described of what is beyond Rhun aside from the map below (and that the Easterling that aided Sauron came from there), but I'm wondering how one would travel so far to end up in the RP, since the distance traveled there is equal, if not greater, than the entire trek from the shire to mordor and would require at least a year to reach since it says you're from the sea.

iirc the Aravi were dark elves, at least those who chose to stay. Though I don't know of any big cats in Rhun, it is possible I suppose since it's largely unexplored in the third compared to most of middle earth (since it is the birthplace of the races).

I have to ask how she was there for the orcs birth and all since that happened many many ages ago... orcs were first made in Y. T. 1085, 415 years before the first age, this would make your character 7706 years old at least, at least to have been born the year orcs were made. I don't see how someone 110 years old in a time of peace would have their village slaughtered...

While Rhun is sometimes described as a wasteland, this entirely depends on Mog's interpretation of it. I mean making a kingdom takes a lot, how did she and her uncles make one in such a place...? And there are kingdom's in the harad deserts so I don't think it would be "kingdom of the last desert"... also why would a queen join this group? I'm sorry but that makes no sense when she has servants... Elves and half elves are immune to disease canonically so I don't see how her children died...

I'm sorry it's just a lot of things don't add up and I would like to see things clarified so I can properly understand current world events.

Name: Morgan.
Age: 1623 (up until the third age plus 100 years, not sure how far into the fourth age this RP starts but you said within the century?)
Gender: Female, pansexual.
Species: Human/ghost (cursed).

Skills: Swordsmanship. Hunting, tracking, and trapping. Archery and fletching.
Magic: Wight's Touch, a spell that allows her to physically touch the ethereal and otherworldly but also makes her vulnerable to fire and sunlight. Ghost Light, a spell that generates a luminous green orb used to help see in the dark.

Equipment: Barrow-blade, taken from the grave and likely the one that had killed her millennia ago (more of a long dagger than an actual sword). Bow and arrows, made them herself and taught to use them by rangers.

Personality: Morgan is quiet and calm, always planning to preparing. She sees no honour in fighting or winning, only survival in doing what is necessary. And while she remains quiet on the outside, inside she wrestles with a darkness waiting to cut lose. She keeps herself guarded and reserved. Morgan is diligent and practical, with a powerfully enduring spirit, even having laboured to build her own cabin in the Barrow-downs. She is also helpful, kind in her own way, offering aid to travellers and allowing rangers to stay at her home.

burning_by_wlop_d8owq1n-fullview.jpg

History: She was born from darkness. A wretched and cold creature, sent to the Barrow-downs to fight for the Witch-king of Angmar. Her last memory was of a dagger of Westernesse striking her down. And there she lay for a thousand years, her ghostly body broken beyond repair, but writhing in a wild hatred for the one who killed her. Until the Witch-king of Angmar was slain at the end of the third age. She felt herself come to life and not as a wraith, not as some undead creature that never knew what real life meant, but as a human with flesh and bone. All of the anger and hatred she had felt as a wraith slowly dissipated. And slowly she began to feel at peace for the first time in a thousand years.

After getting a hold of her senses, she left the barrow. And began travelling on her own. Not knowing to eat or drink to sustain her corporeal body she slowly began to wither away in the wilderness. Until she was found by travellers. Rangers, descendants of the men of Numenour she had first been sent to kill. They nursed her back to health. And escorted her to the township of Bree. Along the way they taught her to survive, to scavenge and hunt for food, to make fire and look for herbs, to track prey and prepare traps. Most importantly they taught her to wield a sword. Which she learnt fast and quickly recalled how she had once fought as a wraith. Finally, they gave her a name: Morgan. At Bree they parted ways.

In Bree she learned the stories of Wight's haunting the Barrow-downs, how to this day men still feared to walk those hills. Morgan knew that she could live her life in a town such as Bree, pretending to be a person like all of the others. She wanted some place quiet, some place calm. Then one day it dawned on her; she must return to the Barrow-downs and make for herself a home. So since the beginning of the Fourth Age she has lived in seclusion in the foothills of the Barrow-downs, guiding the occasional traveller through these lands and providing a place for wayward rangers to rest. But things had started to change. Howls in the dark of knight from a different breed of wolf, bands of orcs crossing her lands, and travellers being attacked on the road. Something was coming, something terrible and dark. She could feel it brewing inside of her, growing as a quiet anger daring to let itself grow louder.

Likes: Honest people. Not necessarily strong people but those who are willing to stand up from themselves or the people/things they care about, even if it be at their own cost. Quiet or gentle music. Sweet fruits.

Dislikes: Liars. Loud noise and noisy people. Taste of beer. Fire, really REALLY REALLY hates fire.

(Appearance: Leina, from Ghostblade, by wlop).

I understand that my character is far from conventional. However, I do not think it is outside of the bounds of the source material or too breaking of cannon. But yeah, basically she was a Barrow-wight sent by the Witch-king, but when Merry and Eowyn killed him Morgan was released from her curse. The name Morgan is a lot more Breelander sounding than a lot of names I had first considered.

That is an absolutely fascinating character concept. So long as she isn't too strong, I'll allow it. You are heroes of your age, after all.

Oh! I've decided on a year. We're on the 240th year of the 4th age. Please make note of this.
