Lizzy smelled confused. She'd wanted him to tell her about Jade, right? What better way than through a story? Still, he nodded. "Yeah. She is. She took over as the leader of the Hunters after she got Phil free, and she's also the spirit of... well, the Multiverse, what remains of it, at least." With one hand, he absently stroked the little girl's hair.

He held back on what he wanted to say next, and instead redirected. "Do you know what the Multiverse is, Liz?"

Lizzy hummed quietly as he stroked her hair, enjoying the contact. She leaned into him a bit as she shook her head. "Mm, just a little, not really," she said a bit sheepishly, feeling as though she probably should know, since everyone else seemed to. To her it wasn't a case of being excused from the knowledge because she had been asleep so long; she wanted to know everything she could so that she could be helpful.

Michael nodded as he continued to stroke her hair. "Do you know what a universe is? I can explain most of how the stuff works, but I gotta know how much you're aware of, or I might miss a few things." His tone was patient, even tired-sounding as he watched her. He made no effort to shift into what might be a more comfortable position, nor to try to pull from her. Uncertain himself if he lacked the energy or if he just didn't want to disturb Lizzy, he accepted his fate as her seat.

She hummed quietly as she was pet, happy as a kitten. "Hm, that's everything right?" the slim girl answered, closing her eyes for a few moments and enjoying his touch. "All the planets and stars and things." She knew a little bit about it from the basic education they had been giving her at the lab, but not as much as he did obviously.

He smiled. "Mhm, pretty much. A universe has lots of galaxies, right? A Multiverse has lots of universes, and each time there's a chance for more than one outcome to happen, another universe is made." He nodded, then looked toward the horizon. "Right now though, the multiverse is broken. You saw how everything is floating islands? Each island is all that's left of a whole universe." He fell silent. as he stared toward the horizon. No matter how he tried to make things sound better, it all came down to 'we're all dying'. His hand paused on Lizzy's head, and he let out a sigh, then forced a smile. "Right now, everyone's trying to figure out what to do with themselves, mostly."

Lizzy blinked up at him, pursing her rosy lips thoughtfully. "Can't you fix it?" she asked innocently. "If it's broken can't you put it back together?" She didn't understand how those little pieces could be all that was left of universes, to her that didn't make sense at all. Universes were supposed to be huge, right? She tugged on Michael's sleeve. "Michael, what do you do to fix a broken universe?"

She asked the most painful questions now: how to fix the universes, the multiverse. He closed his eyes. "If there is a way, nobody knows it, not even the spirit of the Multiverse herself," he shook his head, "And every moment, more of what's left decays away. The universe you're from, you're all that's left of it now. It began falling apart the moment I took you from that place, probably because the spirit of your universe wanted you to be found and taken before it fell away."

It hurt his heart to tell her that, essentially, everyone was doomed. People could move, but there was less and less land to which they could move, and eventually, even the afterlife would fall into nothingness.

He couldn't just tell her there was no hope, though.

"There is a way to take everything back to the beginning, though—to make sure that everyone can try again to make sure this doesn't happen, but some people are scared, because if that happens, everyone now does and everything is gone. It's like resetting a game."

Lizzy pursed her lips, processing this new information. "What if you put all the pieces together?" she offered. "Make a new universe from all the little pieces so they won't fall apart, and you don't have to reset?" She seemed quite intent on figuring out a solution. It wasn't fair that people would have to lose everything that they had done, but the universes falling apart wasn't good either.

Michael swept an arm toward the horizon. "That's what someone did, but it's not working. The different spirits can't be combined, because they're too hurt, so the universes are stuck separate, but they're all together to provide a place for people to live for a while." He fell silent, then returned to stroking her hair.

"If what Monty said about the room past ours is right, this'll be the last fragment to go, so..." He trailed off. "Probably if I wait long enough, Jade will come here, though I don't like sitting doing nothing."

"Can't you make them better?" Lizzy pressed, starting to become distressed. She didn't like this, she didn't like it at all. It was sad and terrible and unfair and she wanted it to stop.

The plants on the roof writhed, growing and entwining with each other.
