Kyra, Zach, Thalia, and Rhea - Hunt for the Rainbow Tailed Weather Gobbler's feathers

So, she and Luce had been put into separate groups… Good. He will have his own challenges, and she her own. Though, would she get along with the people she'd been assigned to? Most likely not. By the looks of it, the boy that Luce healed not too long ago was put elsewhere; the closest person she and Luce had to a potential friend. A shame, but it was best she get a move on with the introductions and ability familiarity.

Kyra stuck with the two people she was assigned to, trying to peek at the piece of paper the swamp elf had in her hands. The word of the Rainbow-Tailed Weather Gobbler… She'd never seen or heard of such a thing, considering her homeland consisted of nothing but caves. But, all in all, the task was to capture a large bird. That shouldn't be too difficult, right? It was just a bird…

"I have some magic that will be helpful in the actual capturing part. I can reach long distances with it and completely bind the bird in place. I can climb higher places, but the illusions themselves will be a real pain..." Kyra commented before introducing herself. "Kyra Solsteisse. You wouldn't happen to have illusionary cancellation magic, would you?"

"I shall be able to draw the creature, and have no issues with the illusions it creates. Yet someone else will have to catch it as hunting isn't a strong suit of mine," the good Doctor added as he tapped the sight inserts in his mask. Then realizing names were being based he stood silent for a moment before realizing it was his turn. "Ah you may call me Zachariah Arstfall if you get hurt please let me know," he spoke ending his turn to the only one who had yet to speak.

Nodding to the other woman, Thalia turns her attention to the 4th in the group, who had yet to say anything, as she noods in reply to the hunter. "I don't think it will be that simple, we'll need to do this during the night or the morning, during the Day it takes off to fly high into the sky… Or that is what I was told. Though the landscape itself and needing to move in the darkness or early morning may be difficult."

"Rah, Tha, Dah" One syllable per person. It was all Rhea could manage without being overwhelmed by her own mind. It worked best if the person had an 'awh' sound in their name. She got really lucky this time around. She could at least call out to each teammate in a way. Otherwise, she'd be left assigning them different grunts to get their attention.

Originally, she had thought that being put in the four person team was unlucky and that she had somehow caused this but perhaps it was just coincidence this time around. With a relieved smile, she shifted the bunny into one arm and used her free hand to pull a small small book out from her bag and flipped it open to the first page. On it was her name, Rhea Asturias in a neat font. The page was worn and a bit torn from constant use but it was still very much legible. It was a simple introduction. She didn't need to tell them she was mute. Anyone with half a brain could figure that much out on their own.

Rhea had briefly considered not telling them anything else but flipped the page anyway, her friendly smile not faltering in the slightest. 'I'm cursed. Do not touch me if you can avoid it.' It would be wrong to not let them know if they were to work together. She didn't give out details but hopefully it would be enough to deter them a bit. Her luck had taken a turn for the better after coming into contact with Arjuna but it was hard not to worry about it rearing its ugly head from time to time. Arjuna could protect her but she could not protect others, right?

As for what she could do... Rhea pinched her chin and thought about what role she could take in the Elf's plan to capture the bird. She wasn't as physically able as most. It would be best to assist Kyra with capturing the thing. Bending down, she gently set the bunny on the ground and drew a simple circle on her right palm with her right index finger. Though it showed nothing, the mana could be felt surging in her hand. In a fraction of a moment a glowing yellow orb the size of a coin appeared and grew to the size of a small ball. It didn't need much charging to showcase what it was capable of doing. She crushed the ball in her hand and the light unraveled into a net that wove its way through the gaps between her fingers and tightly bound her hand, trapping it in the clenched position it was in when she had crushed the ball.

Stretching her arm out, she showed off what she intended to help with. With a wave of her other hand, she dispelled it and made the orb again. This time, she stretched it out into an arrow as a simple demonstration. Anyone with eyes could see her stringless bow popping out of her bag. Rhea did not feel the need to explain any further. She dispelled the arrow and let them think of it as they wished. Finishing her little demonstration, she carefully picked the doll up off the ground and returned to her usual role of casual observation.

Watching the mute girl carefully, well largely a mute, Thalia looks at her book, her same hostile glare present. A curse? Given her own magic's relation to curses, she was unsure if she could be of help with this, or have a natural defense against it. Either way that question and school for thought was neither for here, nor now.

The display of magic told what Rhea would help with, or at least would be suited for in this case. Looking at her compatriots, the Elf considers all four for a bit, then nods.

"We should go now. We'll get as close as possible to its home, then we'll make camp. Once the sun's first rays shine we go the rest of the way and attempt to snatch the bird. A torch may give us away if we attempt the whole journey at night and none of us have natural night vision I think."

Pausing for a bit, she wished to make sure none had an objection as she starts the trek, it was not ideal, but short of getting any supplies they may need for one day their course was set.

With Thalia on point, most of the long distance journey fortunately had trails, which in turn allowed for good time, the distance was not short in the least. With a couple hours of daylight left, a forest was at the foot of a large butte covered in grass and moss, overlooking the area. To confirm this was indeed the way they should be headed, a bird with a large wing span cries as it flies through the air. It's appearance looked vaguely like a cross between a hawk or parrot combined with the size and large wing plumage of a peacock. Though the difference was the huge variety of colors, giving it the Rainbow part of its name. Diving in for the butte, the sunlight seemed to reflect off of the bird, shimmering as rays of light and illusion struck out from its source, vanishing nearly as soon.

A number of others were then visible from different angles, the butte likely was home to more than a few of them. Turning to look at the others, Thalia would speak;

"We can continue for a couple hours more, but I am not so sure about climbing the butte at night. We also need to find a semi open space near the foot of it to entrap one of the birds.. What say you?"

Kyra watched the mute girl with interest, keeping in mind her name and what her magic could do. Rhea would be great at assisting her in coming up with some kind of trap, or she and the doctor could lure the bird into whatever net Rhea had set out for them. Thalia could assist them in actually finding the bird. Seemed like a solid team.

Their journey towards the location was a long one, but it was not in vain. She could see the beautiful birds that they were supposed to capture; the animals themselves proving right away just how much of a hustle it was going to be to even get close to one. Assuming they weren't lucky enough to catch one before dark…

Damn, if only she could fly.

"Let's get searching. Maybe we can take this opportunity to study the birds' behavior and figure out a plan based on that."

Ah another cursed individual Dr. Arstfall was quite used to such company to the point it clearly didn't affect him as posture remained the same at the reveal of the info. He could offer her assistance, but would need to study the curse a bit first before concluding whether or not one of his skills could be helpful or dangerous for her. Yet for now the assignment was more important, and after a long trek their foot work had yielded proper results. As the team set up camp the good doctor removed his coat revealing rather than being a 6 ft tall hunched man he in fact had perfect posture as the coat was revealed to hide his own camping gear. Setting up a small tent in case any of his comrades wanted some rest before the hunt, it was revealed he, and Kyra had similar thoughts.

"A few clicks past the top of the butte is a perfectly flat area around their nesting spot. Probably where they primarily take flight from to shot for the sky. I note some good boulders our capture team can hide behind," he annotated to his team mates from atop a boulder himself when, and how he had got up there a complete mystery as he surveyed the area ahead with a telescope he had stashed. Though most of the birds were now inside the nesting cave some were still out, and about allowing him to observe their natural tendencies.

A bit curious how he had learned so much about the landmass around them, maybe he studied a map or some such on the way? However she still didn't agree with him or the more and rather only talkative woman in full. Speaking up in turn she gives a shake of her head;

"Maybe we can get away with just the feathers, there is no time to study them. We were given twenty four hours exactly to finish this and we've used up a good part of that getting here. They are birds as well, I would not trust some open area so easily.. Such areas rarely exist in nature without reason and most birds do not have a need for a running space."

Gazing back up at the small fortress of a hill, climbing it might be difficult, nevermind capturing a bird. "They aren't very small, I did not expect something a little larger than a Vulture.. Unless the Doctor brought a large bird cage with him, or wants to use his coat as a tarp, we may need to see if the feathers are tied to the magic rather than the bird.. I think I'll try and find us a food or water source.. Though this may mean a rethink of the plan is needed." She says, gazing at the others in her group.

For the past year, Rhea had thought she was strong or at the very least average but after that long trek, she felt a lot less confident about her own strength and even less about her poor stamina as she struggled along while her companions seemed more or less unfazed. The heiress had been bedridden for a good portion of her life. No amount of preparation would have readied her for the painful burning sensation in her legs. They felt like lead and trembled beneath her dangerously on the verge of collapse.

Though it was almost unbearably painful, it was also exhilarating in a way. Personally, she had never walked so far on her own. It was like she'd reached a milestone she didn't even think was possible prior. Reasonably, most would be disheartened but Rhea only felt pride and astonishment. It was this wondrous feeling of childish amazement and sheer willpower pushing her forward to this point.

When they had finally reached a safe open area to camp, Rhea was the first to settle down with a satisfied sigh, eternally grateful for the opportunity to rest her legs. Taking a seat on a large moss covered rock that had a smooth enough surface to get comfortable, Rhea pulled out the paper they had received and looked it over while the others made plans. She had already forgotten their goal halfway through the journey and needed a fresh reminder.

Based on what was written and from what she could recall of the elf's earlier intel, it was hard to make out whether they needed to capture and return with a whole bird or just collect its tail feathers. It wasn't as if the bird itself had much going for it aside from these feathers. She doubted it'd even make a good meal. Would it be a dumb question to ask?

It seemed the elf had thought something similar as she pointed this out, saving her the trouble. Regardless, it was still worrying. Rhea wasn't exactly smart but she was knowledgeable about some things. She'd done a lot of reading growing up. Pulling out her book and a quill, Rhea jotted down her thoughts, summarizing them into just a few sentences.

"Ah." She called out to them and wiggled her small book in her hands to draw their attention to it. If we only need the feathers, they'd likely be found around the nest. Molting can be painful and leaves most birds feeling vulnerable. They'd probably keep each other safe by grouping together there during those times if we're unlucky. Going by the original plan, they'd still be able to get the feathers but if they could find some by looking around, they may be lucky enough to not have to deal with the bird at all.

Problem was that the majority of the feathers would still be near the nest even if they didn't arrive during the right season. It was the one place the birds would definitely drop the darn things and also possibly the most dangerous. They could avoid most of them if they were to put it off until it was daytime. They may run out of time in doing so, however. They really didn't have much to spare and a confrontation with the birds may be unavoidable even if they dashed in, grabbed some and tried to leave.

Though she'd agreed to the skeleton of a plan earlier, Rhea wasn't sure she wanted to risk hurting the poor creatures if they could avoid it. It was a bird native to the land they stood and nowhere else. The locals may not want them getting harmed.

Flipping the page after she was sure the others had time to read what she had written in its entirety, she finished up with her thoughts on helping out with the camp. She was tired but she was still more than happy to do her part. We should avoid harming any birds if possible. I'll help find some firewood. It was a short break but it was worth it. Though her legs were still sore, they no longer trembled. They needed to build a fire. With the night always came a cold chill. It wouldn't do if they froze to death before they even got started.

Looking down at the stuffed rabbit in her arms, she briefly wondered if Arjuna would be fine walking around the forest if she were to take her along. The demon had been awfully quiet though. It was possible she was silently observing or asleep. Honestly, it was hard to tell when the rabbit's eyes were always open. Perhaps it was for the best that she kept her presence a secret for now. With great care, she set the rabbit alone in the tent that the doctor had set up. She could have left her on the rock but she didn't want to offend the being inside the rabbit or damage its temporary shell.
Once the rabbit was safe, she busied herself with tying her long green hair back into a ponytail to keep it out of the way and got ready to go help search for necessities. It was best to allow Thalia to choose what time they'd go out to hunt. She seemed more experienced in these sorts of things than the rest of them. She'd also led them around the forest almost naturally. The woman's gaze had frightened her at first but it was clear she was a very capable person and not exactly unkind either. It really was a blessing to have such good teammates.

Kyra nodded once in acknowledgement to the plan. She was glad they weren't going to just blindly charge those birds. All that was left now was for them to set up camp or execute said plan whenever they got the opportunity to.

And now that things had settled down for a bit, she didn't really want to stick around with the plague doctor and a woman who reminded her of the demon she had a pact with. So, coming up with the first excuse in mind, she said "I'm going to keep her company. Just in case something happens." then started following Rhea.

That wasn't a bad thing, right? If the girl was mute and needed help, she wouldn't be able to get their attention through writing. With Kyra as company, the two could get firewood twice as quickly and be able to watch out for one another.

"Rhea!" She called out to the girl, catching up with her rather quickly. "Hey, let me help you. I know it's just firewood, but with the both of us we'll be done in a couple of minutes."

As the two leave off, Thalia plants a hand to the ground as her eyes gain a slight glow, two little tree sprouts uplift themselves from the earth, twitching a bit, it was clear with how they moved about and looked around that they were Ents, one could correctly assume short lived rather than not. Thalia had grown up among the thickets of trees, of roots, fog and unnatural things. And right now those senses warned her about the forest closer to the butte and that likely played a role in why this area seemed so avoided. The Forest of the Lost, Whispers in the Woods, Thalia had heard details of this, though she had not seen fit to warn them yet.

"Wa...it." She says as the two girls wandered off. It was one thing for her to 'see' through this magic, to know some of these tricks, but it was another to explain these to some. For now all she could do was task one of her Ents with finding them and leading them back if they got too far away in the search for firewood.

As the two start their search for firewood it would be of little surprise if the two girls distanced from one another, or if one attempted so, however firewood would be forthcoming, but oddly so, pieces lead to one another, going deeper in, as the two girls ventured further, the sounds of footsteps and hushed whispers could be heard, the leaves would rustle and nature around them would both pick up in pitch and yet go complete still.. To the ears of the mute would come the stillness, to the ears of the broken half, the noise, then all would be still minus the sound of rushing footsteps leading away, firewood suited sticks in its wake.

Rhea was almost painfully oblivious to any dangers. After her parent's passing, Arjuna had somewhat taken up the task of telling her not to do dumb things. Now that the demon was out cold, she was free to do just that.

Unexpectedly, someone called out her name. Turning back to look, she found Kyra making her way towards her with the intention to help. "Mn!" Rhea happily agreed and expressed her gratitude by curling her fingers into a heart shape in front of her. Was there any better way to say thank you than with affection? Rhea didn't seem to think so as she held the heart up for Kyra until she caught up to her. Everything was always better with a companion around.

Though she was grateful for the assistance, Rhea was still aware enough to keep Kyra at some distance as they made their way deeper into the forest. It was quieter than she had expected. There was the rustling of leaves here or there but no longer did she see any birds flying about. It was weird. 'Did they go eat or something? Though she was curious, she didn't make much of it.

It didn't take long to find firewood. She thought nothing of the trail of wood that led them in as she found one after another. It seemed the trip would be a short one. Carefully, she gathered pieces into her arms and hummed the tune she had heard onboard the ship before to fill the silence. It was a catchy and oddly persistent tune that would get stuck in one's head for some time.

"Oh dear seems our teammates don't fully understand the situation,"
Zachariah noted as he got off the boulder he was on as it was agreed that they would simply collect some feathers. The problem was these woods were just as much affected by strange magic equal to the rumors of the bird's magics. The swamp elf had sent a ent out to try and retrieve them, but even as he was back on ground level the two were far gone.

"Do you believe the ent is enough? Or shall we fetch them before this test escalates?"

Heart hands. Been a long while since Kyra had one directed at her. She couldn't help but smile at the other girl.

Off to a good start.

Kyra looked around at first for some kind of item to try and leave a trail so that that could head back if they needed to. No rocks, or anything that stood out to help them. She thought about using her magic to dig into the ground and leave a prominent trail, but she settled with leaving scratches into the trees as their guide. It's not like the trees were going to be falling any time soon.

As they searched, something caught her attention. Something that made her pause and look around. She read Rhea's question and lightly shook her head.

"A few birds would leave if it was just food. Not all of them." She responded, suspicion lacing her voice as she listened further.

As the two ignore the whispers of the woods, they would for the time being be more or less left alone, though the way they had come was now unmarked, or rather, it was simply just gone. Bushes and trees seemed to be in the way, or had they actually gotten turned around?

Whatever the case may be, for now that would be left undiscovered in part. Back at the camp, the elf seemed a bit distant in her gaze and attention towards Zachariah, with subtle movements of her hand, one Ent moves into the woods while another stays near Zachariah.

"..nothing here should harm them seriously.. I will follow the path they left and try to get them back. If you wish to scout the birds out or look for food, this one will help you return. They can follow my aether back.. It will not help us with the feathers but.." With that she returns to her had gestures and distant gaze, every so often she would 'return' her attention placed firmly on the here and now. With a bitter smile to her face, she wished she had developed this magic more, but for now it did the job.

And with that the only one sane enough to stay close to camp was the medical element of the group. With a sigh followed by facepalm the doctor reviewed the surrounding area as he pulled out his gun as well as his cane oddly motioning the ent to follow.

"Well let us go find some food, and keep this fire fed I feel the opposition those three are running into will be quite stamina reducing," Arstfall exclaimed rather oddly talking to the ent as they went off to examine the resources in the immediate area to avoid the camp being left unintended.

The Ent would offer no words in response as it's glowy green eyes study the landscape, whatever food they found short of mushrooms, roots or edible plants would be from Arstfall as the small shrub would lead him back once done.

On the other side of things, the Ent would emerge from the forest, waving his arms and passing through a 'tree' that had shown up on their path, waving its small branch arms, Kyra would be led back to the trees she scratched, something that no Fae, Instructor or even the birds could so easily replicate, regardless of what was the cause of the attempted trap.

Vanishing down into the earth, the small ent gives a little wave, gone and it's work finished. Time would swiftly pass into the night with a few things learned about the surroundings and the behavior of the birds. A rather modest dinner would await them and baring he shared or allowed one of the girls his tent a night of outdoor sleeping, well if they slept at all in an alien woodland none of them knew about.

Having just laid on the ground, Thalia did sleep a little, as the sun was coming up, she puts back on her tunic top, having used it as a pillow during the night speaking aloud, she points into the sky, speaking up to awaken the rest, if they were every asleep or still asleep in anycase.

"Look! They are leaving, now is our chance to get up there." Putting her tunic back over her undershirt, she points forward, calling them to follow with a gesture of her hand. Going through the woods care was taken to mark their way back as they reach the butte. Along the way a few lingering illusions or the machinations of another seemed to get stronger, threatening progress in the hike, leaving the masked man, or Thalia with her Ents to pathfind the way forward as Kyra or Rhea marking the way back.

It was here however that things would need to be decided upon, the climb up the cliff would not be easy, walking forward and touching a hand upon the soil and rock, Thalia causes a pile of vines to grow up the side, reaching roughly the halfway point, keeping her focus upon it she speaks.

"You three must decide amongst yourselves who does what and who can aid in going the rest of the way. I must stay here, my magic is not so good as of yet to leave this as a permanent feature as more experienced of my kindred may do."

"Aight since we know they devour clouds I will place a shot at the fair opening hopefully leading away any straggler birds, and distracting any returning. From there it's best I stay at our escape point so I can respond to any of you getting in danger in equal measure time," Arstfall pointed out as he loaded a precariously strange bullet into his flintlock pistol. He then pulled out a small insert handing it to Kyra "If you run into any immediate illusion this should help you two see through them momentarily."

Kyra didn't say it outloud. She didn't have to. They had definitely gotten lost. Rhea had been so focused on following the trail of wood that she didn't even know where to begin on how to return. Could they follow the sun? Did they head away from it or towards its retreating brilliance? She couldn't remember.

It was getting dark quickly. Before the bitter chill could set in, they were found and led back to the camp. After eating what Arstfall provided and sharing some of the snacks she had brought along with the others, Rhea soon found herself unable to sleep. She'd already taken a nap earlier. To sleep now would be pointless. Instead, she spent the night leaning against a tree and adding these teammates of hers into the journal.

When morning came, the birds left their home to eat and it was time to strike. Since the other two were playing support, it would be best for the other two to focus on collecting the feathers. Rhea nodded and drew a quick feather and what seemed to be a bag to show the others her intent. She'd collect them and stuff them into her bag. Unless there was a bird to catch, she doubted anything in her arsenal would be of use at this point.

Kyra knew damn well that she had marked their way back, so seeing them get lost despite it made her swallow the lump in her throat. This did teach her a lesson though; never split from the group unless for life or death reasons. Especially if one member in their party actually knew where they were going.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Lesson learned.

After the plan was discussed, Kyra was offered the insert. The elf and the doctor had pretty much verified her and Rhea's roles in this mission. She took the insert in her hand. "Thank you. My magic can help with grabbing the feathers from a distance; that should be of help."

As the two girls complete the climb, with some help from the other two time to time, the effects of the illusions would increase, false climbing points or beams of light and reflections. But it would not be enough to stop the climb, upon reaching the top some of the more tired birds and young were on various perches and nests scattered about the butte. Keeping to themselves, a few did display their brilliantly bright feathers to scare off the two girls or to conceal their own presences. Not much time could be spent here and only seemed to agitate the birds further, it would not be long till they would attack or call back the others.

It did seem however that the feathers had an ability to process mana through them, which lead to the magic showcased by the birds and at least some of the illusions in the surrounding woodland. Collecting what they could and returning unharmed, Thalia greets the pair and studies the feathers with aid of the doctor, picking out the best looking of the batch for the test turnin.

With that out of the way the four would find leaving the forest a good deal more easy than when they had entered. With the evening sun looking down, the four would return to their fellows, prize in hand, or in bag in this case, as Thalia holds on to them, taking a set on a bench where she awaits the instructor and from there to collect her things from the gardeners.

Really? A scavenger hunt? Well at least he wasn't expected to sit down and take an actual test for his first experience here. He was already trying to plot out ideas for this test. Needless to say his initial thought was to have someone else do the hard part.

But what really caught his attention was the girl Findel who seemed to be moving with the same line of thought. Yeah she was right. There was always some kind of over achiever.

"It shouldn't be that hard to 'convince' someone… So, how about we set up shop? That or find the easiest artifact to find and swipe it while everyone's fighting over it."

"I am the one he called 'Dia'. I am Diastraea Silvergalia. At your service, mnya~" she introduced herself, bowing to the two. She looked at Findel. So this was an elf with combat and mercantile skills. Who had rune magic. "Ooo~ that's interesting. I do not mind how we acquire our item. Buy it. Steal it. Find it. Whatever, it does not matter to me. What can your rune magic do, miss Findel, myaa?"

"Huh, then maybe we should wait till another group finds something good and is worn out, then we can snatch one of their items. No hard feelings left so long as they got a means to clear. Might wanna avoid anyone from the boat too, they know us afterall."

Turning her attention from male to the catgirl she slides one glove off her left hand, showing the tattoos engraved there, then pointing at her head. "I mostly lean towards Fire and then Earth. Guess I can do anything my mana allows, but rune magic is more specialized for the price it pays in ease of use. My spells mostly are defensive or offensive with my sword, or to boost my movement around."

Pondering it over a bit, it seemed they made their mind up to attack another group that had one item too many, she was fine with that mostly. "Question is who and where.. Tracking and sneaking might be a bit hard for us, so maybe pick one of the ruins or urban zones?" She offers.

Kess listened in on what they were talking about. "Oh right! Name's Kess. I'm no specialist. I've practiced mostly general wizardry, but I like to think I've got a good control over mana usage and applications of general arcane. I can launch blasts and create barriers. But I've also dabbled in counter magic."

The two mentioned going to either the city or some sort of ruin of some sort. Kess wasn't about to over work himself, but exploring would still be interesting. "Well if this whole island is the college, might as well take a tower around, yeah? I say we find ourselves a place with a nice scenic view and wait till someone stops by."

Well indeed they had found a place of noteworthiness. Just below a cliff face sat an old building of some kind, built directly into the mountain. Sitting in sturdy pine at the crest of the cliff, Kess was enjoying watching the sun begin to set in the horizon. Unlike most of other groups who spent time asking around and puzzling out a lot of the clues they had been handed. But for Kess and his team, well it was quite simple. He wasn't going to let Findel know that he learned about this place by asking for the 'most breathtaking view.' But if they thought he was trying to woo her that's fine. At least they were here now.

It had been almost 5 hours now and they had yet to see much of anything. Kess was now keeping himself occupied tossing cards into his upturned hat on a bough across from him. So far, not one had fallen. "Any sign of someone?" He asked the two women in his party. Had he actually been paying attention he would have seen the group of mages exiting the forest below then, crossing the clearing into the entryway below.

Dia had been busying herself with jotting down notes about her current companions. The elf with Fire and Earth magic. Which was "similar to me!" As she also had a good grasp on Fire and Earth magic currently. And the boy with the witch hat who could deftly toss cards into it. After noting down some characteristics and unique oddities about them as people, she was busying with sketching them out in her notebook.

"Ah. There was a group of mages that just went by. Perhaps they have what we seek? Nyaa~"

"Rather nice here." Findel says nonchalantly, as she looks at the ruin and the surrounding landscape. Gazing out upon it, she spent most of the time bored, looking around, time to time. Though in this case Dia had noted the travelers first, turning her gaze to follow the group she nods. "Three or four it looks like, went inside. Not sure if they have an item or not. Wanna take a closer look, or Jump them once they are outside making camp?"

She says, looking up towards him and his card game.

Kess nearly fell out of the tree, hearing that someone else was coming. Now it was time to see if they had anything. He looked at the group from afar, trying to see if he could find anything out from just a glance. And of course the answer was no here. He realized that just maybe he hadn't planned this out as well as he hoped.

Well he had no information until he heard a familiar voice. "Fine, we'll camp out here for the night. Then we'll search these caves for anything of value." Ah yes, him. One of those aforementioned over-achievers that Findel was referring to earlier in the day.

Kess huddled his team in close. "Oh yeah, he most definitely has something for us to take. Maybe even a few things. And I think I have a good way of getting this to work…" He looked up at the two girls, both of whom claimed to be quite able at terramancy. "How fast can you two dig?"

"Dig?" Was he planning to open some sort of pitfall under them? Puzzled by this Findel shrugs. "I'm more able to raise earth up with my current enchantments, but I guess reasonably fast? Depending on what it is I need to do, how big, the time I have, scrolls if I can't just push up earth." She says in a mix of answer and inquiry.

"I can move earth away in a process similar to what you would consider digging, yes, nya~" Dia replied matter-of-factly. It didn't seem to be much of a problem for her. Her tail was flicking side to side. She seemed interested to take this path he had described, and was more than ready to continue on with their mission.

As the crew of roguish wizards enacted their plan, Kess had to admit that their skill and abilities were quite impressive. He was excited to meet more interesting people and learn from them. He watched as they worked their literal magic. Paying attention to the way they moved their hands, how their circles were inscribed and drawn, as well as how much mana they focused through them.

It took a decent part of the night, but they had scraped together a fine layout. Kess had a nice hole to hide in that he was going to use to nab the good once they had been cut off. Dia had the ever important job of controlling when the cave ins were initiated, and Findel was going to put her silver tongue to good use, luring them in with the urgency of lives in the balance. Kess looked over, And flashed a light from his wand across the darkened corridors. The signal meant to show that it was time to start the first cave in, the one meant to wake up the team outside.

Spotting the signal. The silver-haired cat girl put on her freshest little cat-like grin. Holding out her hands, she waved them gently. The magic circles she drew were clean, simple, and smooth.

But the resulting magic wasn't. Just as instructed by Kess. Her magic caused the first cave-in necessary for their plan.

Now was the time for something rather amusing in a manner, at least from the standpoint of a Merchant family's child. This was more akin to banditry or thievery in the leasts, something that would carry a hefty punishment in the sands, though in a manner this was different. Plus she had no idea if the second cave-in would slow down the ones they were going after or not, might could do worse. It would more suit her interests to attack them straight on.

The group outside awoke with the sudden crashing and rumbling coming from the cave. Led by the posh Pantheo, he quickly stood up and gathered his gear. "What happened!?" He called to his companions, a rather burly dwarven male. And a timid looking goblin female. The dwarf merely scratched his head replying "I don't rightly know… I'm not sure how we could feel the mines collapse all the way from here…" Pantheo looked at the dwarf in awe, not certain how he managed to make it this far with his intelligence. Regardless, that made it perfectly clear: the cavern they had their sights set on had collapsed.

Pantheo slowly stepped forward, producing a golden wand with a few gems encrusted in it. "Is anyone down there?". He called out to the darkness.

"Y-Yes!" Findel calls out, dirtying herself a little bit she uses her mana and runes to case a few balls of rock, letting them clatter and bounce to give the illusion of a follow up tremor.

Coughing a little she puts on a tired face, it was good to keep the crowd engaged in ones performance after all.. Taking note of the travelers, there was a Goblin and a Dwarf in his retinue, this fact alone may be troubling.. Thinking back to the tales told by merchants around the shop and the arena she quickly makes up a story, one that would hold some merit to trip up and trap the trio, by aiming at the base sort of all.

Greed.

"W-we were exploring the mines, damn shopkeep said there were some Mithirl ore down here, we were hoping to find crystals or spent ore left in the mine for our passing.. One of my comrades lit a lantern down below, some sort of fog caught up in the lamp, sent a fireball a ways down. I think they are alright, but it was all I could do to escape." Offering the story she was curious how readily they would buy it as she reaches for a side pouch on her belt, grabbing a small flask of water as she downs a portion of it.

Kess could only hear a little from his spot as her voice echoed through the chasm. Well now, she was a pretty good liar. He'd have to keep that in mind. Meanwhile, the head of their target scoffed slightly. "Well I see what happened. Under the condition that we can keep anything found inside. I hope that is a fair trade." The goblin opened her mouth as if to speak but quickly shut it as Pantheo commanded his party inside.

It took a little bit of traveling before reaching the location of the cave-in, rocks and rubble blocked further entry. Pantheo gave his dwarven companion a nod and he nodded. Opening his mouth wide… And wider… And wider… And then bit into the rock, which easily crumbled beneath his teeth. It weirded Kess out. But it also proved to be an issue elsewhere. This heavyset earthworm was digging through at an incredible pace. They needed to get moving fast. He gave the signal again, ready for the second cave in to start.

That Elf girl came up with something on the spot, which immediately fooled them. Or at least their leader. Dia was impressed enough to write it all down in her notes. Writing up fibbed stories was good for when she needed to reference lying later. As Findel may have surmised, she was not the best at deceit. Any deceit she had was probably purely unintentional, or just by omission.

Okay. It seemed it was about time for that second cave in to happen to separate them from their stuff, yeah? Discreetly, Dia placed her hand on the cave wall. She sent some mana through it to cause the second cave in. With luck, it would look like an accident caused by the one digging. Like the previous cave in had left the area unstable, and he had accidentally caused it strain so it gave way.

"Hey! What.. I..Fine!" Sputtering a bit and then getting angry, the main part of a sale was getting the other party to believe they were the ones making a profit..

Watching the Dwarf with some interest, that was a rather scary ability they had.. They would need to gain a lead on them and to take something good enough to get them passed, but not good enough to keep Pantheo and his friends after them all. And true to their previous thoughts, they were indeed a group of overachievers, from the looks of it they had three, maybe four items. One which she felt was a relic was on the Boss's person, the other three were a lamp, book and a sword, enchanted by the looks of them.

Moving close to the goblin, she would do a shove to 'save' her, then grab an item, in this case the sword would do, she could put it in her scabbard and take her actual weapon in hand to fight them if they came for her. Easy come, easy go, plus she expected it wouldn't hold them for long… For now she would wait for a sign, then she would act and push up earth from below to complete the collapse.

Pantheo quickly turned around to see the ceiling behind them collapse. Now growing suspicious, he looked over to see Findel, pushing the small goblin out of the way of some of the rubble. Something didn't seem right about all this. "Just how badly did your team screw up?" He asked Findel.

Kess watched as everything collapsed for the second time. As things started falling and the attention of everyone was brought to the new collapse, Kess took the opportunity to launch a single arcane dart from his wand, cutting a hole in the sack of Pantheo. From out of it fell a small idol of some sort, round and smooth. It bounced on the floor and rolled around for a moment. Kess waved his wand as an invisible force started slowly moving it towards his place of hiding.

However, it seemed the shockwaves of the cave-ins had taken its toll on the caverns. Particularly, the little pocket that Kess had been hiding in. It started with just one sizable rock, landing on his head, which he made a low, "Ow." from, catching the attention of Pantheo. But soon after, the whole roof started crumbling around him, Kess only had enough time to produce a barrier, and jump outside, pretty much confirming any suspicions he had of the situation. He pulled his own wand from his side and pointed it at Kess. "You! I should have expected this was one of your hair-brained schemes!" He called back his allies. "Prepare yourselves. It seems we're up against nothing but a pair of common thieves."

With the second cave in she shoves the Goblin aside in part to protect them and in part to steal from them, however some movement caught her eye, Kess seemed to be going for the trinket, or she hoped it was him, however the various cave in's were now taking a toll on the actual earth…

Grabbing the sword, she would not be attempting to keep it as she smiles a bit at Pantheo, twirling the blade in hand.

"I had much rather ambushed and battle you all, but alas, I would like to add that the current rumbles are not us." Waving the spare sword around, she draws her own blade, sticking the relic into her scabbard. Making sure they directly see it, Fidel turns around and runs in an attempt to reach the exit as she activates the tattoos on her heels to gain more speed.

Hm! The 'pair' of them! That meant they didn't yet know the cat was behind the cave ins!

"Huh?" Dia looked up, feeling the tremble of the earth beneath her feet. Her silver tail swished. Oops! She had thought she did her best with the magic cave ins! "Looks like I have much to learn about speleology and geology! Kyehehe! Merryaa~!"

Sending out her mana in a 'sense' around her. She could feel the elf fleeing the scene with one of the necessary items in hand. Kess was busy with a cave in she hadn't meant to happen, with the head of the other team noticing him.

Suppose I'll go help out the boy. But if she could do so, she'd like to remain hidden for now.

Waving her hand, an earthen hand grabbed the idol that Kess was after. It threw it over to Kess. Findel already had one. But this was insurance. Then an earth wall rose between Kess and Pantheo, giving him time to escape. Maybe.. If he could handle the falling rocks.

Findel had already split by the time Kess really knew what was happening, creating a small opening in the pathway for them to escape out of. Well, she had something at least. He wanted to grab the idol himself, but it looked like he wouldn't get the chance as Pantheo stepped between him and it. "Dain! Stop the elf!" The Dwarf snickered and breathed in super heavily, grabbing a chunk of rock before smashing it between his teeth.

With a hardy huff, pieces of shrapnel went flying from his mouth at an immense speed. Each heading straight at Findel. Kess only had enough time to jump in the way and produce a barrier, though these pieces of rock were moving so fast, a few actually managed to pass through, one cutting his cheek, another tearing his pants. By the time the assault was done, he was already pretty spent. Whoever this Dain fellow was was an absolute beast.

Still, he noticed something else flying towards him. He prepared another barrier, but caught a slight glimpse from the light outside. It was the idol! That crazy cat huh? Looked like he had a pretty good team this time around. He smirked, creating several orbs around him. "See you at the plaza then!" He launched them in all directions with the intention of distracting them. He grabbed hold of the idol and bolted. Dia seemed to know what she was doing. She'd make it out. For now, he hoped to rendezvous with Findel.

Continuing her fire boosted run, Findel smiles thinly as she twirls around at the sound of earth heading for her, sliding a bit, she took notice of Kess blocking the way from most of the fragments, throwing a hand down upon the ground she deploys one barrier, and leaves behind traces of mana to throw up some more. While small these would buy some time as Kess got clear and so did she.. It was highly unlikely this would hold the dwarf for long as she twirls her blade in her freehand.

"Maybe we should split up, or we find a nice tall place to throw one of those items off." She offers, speaking to him.

Just like a cat, her sneak skill was maxed out. Or so she would joke. Regardless, without much issue, Dia slipped away. She wondered if she had even been noticed at all, and would not have been surprised if she hadn't. Though, if they recalled the announced teams, then they would be aware Kess's team had a third member. Oh well, too late now for them.

Dia figured her teammates would be fine, so took the opportunity to extricate herself to the meeting point. Ultimately, barring some minor hiccups, she felt this was a job well done!

On his outing for something to eat, Yanagi had overheard something interesting in relation to the task at hand. A patron had spoken nearby about how purchasing herbs from this business was nothing more than a matter of convenience. There was a whole forest of rare herbs (apparently a failed attempt at cultivating some more magically attuned plants) just on the other side of the island. He even mentioned that there was a plant that caught his attention: "Ghost Eye." A flower that blooms only at dusk, and is used in many divination rituals, as it possesses the ability to allow someone to see things beyond the normal vision of most races.

Having discussed their options with his team, the group made their way towards the far end of the island, the group soon found themselves in a forest of beautiful flowers, some even looking to grow as tall as trees. In spite of its beauty, there was danger in these overgrown gardens.

A danger that Yanagi had grown up respecting in the bogged marshs of his homeland. Appearances were hardly what they seemed, this was especially the case with mother nature and people. Your first impression could hardly ever be trusted, and you had to be prepared for… surprises. As they walked an unevenly weathered path, his gaze was constantly shifting. Scanning the ground for anything that resembled vines, he took steady, delicate steps. Avoiding where possible from trampling on vegetation.

When his sight wasn't focused on the ground it was tracing their surroundings, and strangely above them every so often. He would clearly regard the foliage as territorial beasts, which demanded their domain be left undisturbed. Or perhaps, that they were thirsting for their next available meal. The thought of such made his stomach toss once more. Once they had this "Ghost Eye" he would collect whatever else seemed magical and make a break for the port. He didn't dare trust eating anything he found in these unknown woods.

Being part of the group of unfamiliar faces and just as unfamiliar abilities, Luce wondered if they could pull off what seemed to be the most unforgiving and chance-limited assignment. The "Ghost Eye," which only appeared at dusk, was what he and two other individuals needed to work together to try and obtain. He had only been made aware that such an artifact existed because the eye was used in a divination ritual regarding the angel that had granted him her power. But aside from that, Luce had no experience with such a thing.

Now, with his group, Luce wished he could pause and take in the colorful beauty of the flowerbeds. The captivating aroma of some had made Luce want to walk over and touch the delicate petals of the source in question, but he knew better. The briefing between him and his teammates told him that the last thing he wanted to do was get anywhere near these poisons with rose colored clothing.

He could write a song about this.

Though another thought crossed his mind… He wondered just how effective these plants were at disabling intruders. Would his immune system be able to combat whatever these plants had to offer quick enough?

He believed yes, but he didn't want to overestimate his abilities.

Following Yanagi's steps, Luce kept a careful eye on their surroundings for any sort of vines. If he needed to move something, he would use his staff to gently nudge it out of the way. So far, he'd yet to encounter suspicious looking vines he'd been warned about.

Just how deep in this forest was the Ghost Eye?

The deeper they progressed into the forest, the denser these flourishing plants began to grow. It was difficult to proceed without slashing a few vines in the progress. As they kept moving forward though, Yanagi would catch his foot on a root, soon falling forward. Looking backward, he would see that the vine was actually wrapped around his ankle. And slowly tightening…

Hastily reaching down as the vine attempted to take hold, Yanagi slipped off the boot and went to scramble to his feet. A little disoriented at the fall, he was certain there hadn't been a root at his feet prior. Briefly eyeing where he had tripped, the root began to sink back into the dirt. With it the pathway they were walking began to disappear. The foliage would move to swallow it on all sides, surrounding them and limiting their routes of escape while masking the approach of additional vines.

"A trap's been set."

He concluded before reaching into his pocket for the piece of charcoal from earlier. Hastily scrawling figures and symbols on his palm.

With its 'prey' ensnared, a few more vines, covered in thorns and sap popped out of the foliage, and a large yellow and red pitcher slowly revealed itself as the source of these attacks. This plant was native to Andiian jungles, as the Shaman's Cauldron. It was a carnivorous plant, but never grew to such an extreme size as to be able to hunt a human. It's vines shot out and tried wrapping themselves around Luce and pulled at him with great force.

He caught the movement at the last second, but before he could say anything as warning, Yanagi's shoe was taken and both men were scrambling to get their bearings. The first thing Luce did was look around for any sort of escape or a weakness, but any openings were covered. But was "up" an escape route? If it was, and Yanagi could keep the vines off of them long enough, then Luce would be able to fly the two out of there.

The plant's next course of action interrupted his thoughts.

"Gnh!"

Luce saw the vines whipping at his direction, giving him only a moment to react. He jumped out of the way as his hands glowed white, the magic coming together to make a pristine sword of the same color. He had dodged what came his way, Luce readied his aim and swung the blade downward to try and cut some of the vines that had just attacked him.

"That won't do much. It doesn't sense pain."

Watching briefly as the taller gentleman materialized a sword of light and began hacking at the lapping vines. Yanagi couldn't fault him for the response, but it was one of somebody who hadn't dealt with nature's harsh indifference. The vine would likely only adapt its course towards his movements, persisting to inevitably snag the both of them if not wear them to exhaustion to accomplish the same.

There was one way however, to shift its attention and impart the notion they were more of a threat than a meal. The primal fear of both plant and animal which favored the rise of man who conquered it That being the fear of fire. Waiting for the opportunity to catch a flailing vine or to spot one from below. Yanagi held little hesitation now, and no intent on leaving without his boot in hand.

Luce hummed softly at the new information. A plant that didn't feel pain… That was new, and interesting. Still, he never experienced nature of this caliber within the dark caverns of his homeland, so his first instinct had been to disable the weapon being used against him. If Yanagi knew that wouldn't work, then he must be thinking of some sort of plan.

With his efforts being turned toward simply keeping himself from being strangled and grabbed, the plant began working its way from the bottom, slowly wrapping around Luce's feet, as a few other vines aimed to disable his arms, though with little success at first. Yanagi, on the other hand, having lied almost perfectly still was only being slowly wrapped up, continuing from his feet. If Yanagi wanted to ensure he grabbed a part of the vine, he needed to wait just a moment longer

It wasn't long though that a lucky vine slithered up the back of Luce and wrapped around his neck, pulling his head back and keeping it from turning. Then with one sudden motion, the plant lifted him into the air right above the opening of the plant below. At the same time, another vine flicked itself right in front of Yanagi face, presently occupied by the struggling Luce

Catching the opportunity, quite literally. Yanagi would firmly grab hold of the passing vine, mask concealing his pained expression. Yet, with fervor he tugged harshly in order to clasp it with both hands. Digging his heels into the earth, and engaging his hips for support. It seemed he was challenging the plant to a tug-of-war if not treating the vine as a lasso.

With a hissing whine the plant convulsed and the vines loosened around both Yanagi and Luce. This was fortunate for Yanagi, now being freed from it's grasp. As for Luce, the plant dropped him, but right above the opened pitcher below

Concentrated on staying upright above all else, Yanagi would swiftly attempt to wrest control of the tendril limb. Simultaneously channeling a moderate portion of his meager mana into his hands. The makeshift wizardry of his palms would ignite new flames with each pull.

Whatever Yanagi's plan had been, Luce had realized soon enough that he needed more time to execute it. Unfortunately, more time wasn't what he had. The plant had tried to disarm Luce, and while that attempt was unsuccessful, there wasn't much the angel himself could do when he was lifted up and dropped into the mouth of the beast.

From seeing forestry to nothing but darkness, the overwhelming acidic scent assaulted his nostrils. Only the soft glow of his blade had been his light source. But with it so close, there was no space for it to properly illuminate anything.

He could feel something melting off of him, but it was not skin, muscle, or bone. Luce had thought that he'd gone into shock from the amount of pain he was receiving from the acid, but no. He could feel his skin present. Nothing felt off…

"My my. You're very lucky aren't you?"[/] The angel spoke within his mind. "You're healing much faster than the beast's belly can dissolve you. If the acid were stronger, you'd be nothing but mush~ Isn't my magic glorious?"

Luce silently agreed. "Magnificent. Now I can kill the beast from the inside."

Readying his sword, Luce aimed the tip of the blade at the lining of the plant's stomach then cleanly stabbed through it with his sword. Making quick work, Luce dragged the sword's blade upwards and around, carving the plant from the inside until it was mostly cut in half.

He emerged from the darkness back into the light, feeling a lot more wind than he anticipated and the wood and rocks under his feet.

Luce looked down at himself, realizing that the acid had completely melted the fabric of all of his clothing, leaving him stark naked.

'Is that how fast it would have dissolved me?'i/color] He inwardly asked himself before looking back at the plant then Yanagi, blade still ready. Were they safe now?

With this monstrous plant no longer an issue, the vines began to wither and withdraw, slowly backing away. The thicket they seemed to be in, was actually made up of this plant's vines. Clearing away, they found themselves in a forest clearing. Right as the sun touched the horizon. Suddenly flowers began to open up as the forest filled with a strange ethereal light. Each flower was black and white, and looked as if they were staring directly at them. It was an unsettling sight as much as it was a beautiful one.

As the vine wilted in his hands, Yanagi merely shrugged at the question. His shoulders dropping, gloves stained red. He turned his gaze away from the naked man in front of him, and towards the unearthly glow of the flowers dotted around them. Wondering if they were the rumored "Ghost Eye", he considered the chance they may be a look alike. Merely adopting their appearance for some sort of survival adage. Walking over to one, he knelt down and looked into its almost transparent glow.

As he stared into the "pupil" of this strange plant, Yanagi would see a reflection of himself and scarce more. At least at first glance. Upon closer inspection, he would notice a robed figure with a large hat looming over him. And over Luce, a strange light, crowned with fire and a single blazing eye. But only briefly. Looking back again, these shapes would have disappeared and replaced with just their reflections once again. Indeed, this must be the Ghost Eyes they were searching for.

Luce's gaze caught with the "Ghost Eye" that they'd been tasked in getting. A strange familiarity, and yet it was as captivating as he'd seen them long ago. He tore his gaze long enough to try and find some makeshift clothing for himself, which would not happen 'less he wanted to risk whatever poison lingered in the leaves of the forest.

He looked to Yanagi.
"Shall we?"

Yanagi looked to Luce in return. Taking a second to inspect the naked man down and up, but ultimately saying nothing.

Eventually he began to remove his cloaked jacket. Balling it up and tossing it at Luce wordlessly. It would likely be many times too short for the man's lengthy frame, but it was better than nothing. With that Yanagi collected a handful of the Ghost Eye with profit in mind, as well as his boot. Not long afterward, the two would slowly begin their trek back to civilization.

As the group reached yet another plaza, the professor (Khalid assumed at least) stopped, leaning in close to a carrot-headed boy's ear, before leaning back out and shouting about a McGuffin test. He threw out a stack of papers, one of which floated over to Khalid. A quick glance revealed it to be a rule sheet for the test! As he was busy reading, the professor began assigning teams, writing them on a platform with a piece of charcoal.

Perhaps this was a good chance to showcase his abilities? Khalid picked the names for his team off the board, before turning his hand into a flat board itself, elongating his arm to nearly be down to his toes, and engraving the names "Ena" and "Rurik" on the first two lines, then his name on the third, followed by an arrow pointing towards his arm, then flipped the arm into the air, slowly allowing it to rotate to allow everyone in the crowd to see it.

His little conversation with the cat was cut short and the vessel's passengers were brought off for the tour. Rurik nodded idly. So all the isle was the scholae. Unconventional, but it worked for him. There was plenty of opportunity for inspiration and the leash around them seemed pretty loose, though there would be lectures and assignments as mentioned. Speaking of, the papers flying about detailed their first one; a group project already.

"Anything of value, hrm…" He murmured to himself before nodding up. Everyone was already dispersing. That made his own team easier to find, though it wasn't that impressive of a feat given the manner of attention-garnering one of them was up to.

Did he just turn his arm into an advertisement…

The answer was obvious. Nonetheless, Rurik approached him, paper in hand.

"I'm Rurik. Do we know where the third one is?"

Just as the man asked the question, a beacon of light and sparks emerged from the crowd, and in a blazing trail while doing a few aerial loops, landed squarely on his head. Ena didn't really like it, it was a bit spiky...smelled a bit ashy...not the best texture, she should probably relocate soon. Looking over at the other guy, the stretchy one that can stretch into a sign, the fairy wondered if he would be more comfy to sit on, seeming rubbery and all.

"Hello! I'm Ena! I saw my name on the mister there!"

She shouted as the small humanoid leaped into the air (still from the man's head) and grabbed a sheet of the instructions from the air, then waving it in front of her teammate's face like one would dust off a carpet on their balcony.

"I was busy apologizing to the ship's crew, I flew into it so hard I broke it. Emmm, but I'm ready to help now!"

Ena was glad that the incident on the boat didn't cause too much of a scene, at least it didn't make her late for the first school event. It was a bit hard to read while shaking the paper you are trying to read, but she thinks she got the gist of it.

Khalid swung his arm back to his side, transforming it back to its normal shape. He took a closer look at the two he'd been placed in a team with. A masked man, and the fairy from the ship, it appeared. This should be fun! "Good to meet you! I'm Khalid."

As he spoke, he swung his arm up, opening his hand to offer to the pair to shake, if they so desired, splitting off a smaller, disproportionately long fairy-sized arm and hand from the elbow to proffer to the fairy.

Feeling a light something plop on his head, Rurik's eyes cast upward. He couldn't quite see, but the presence was unmistakable, confirmed by the voice that came from above. A fae of some kind. What the Fairy spoke of was not instilling confidence.

Leaving Ina to her chosen seat, Rurik's hand reached out to meet Khalid's in a shake. It was firm and sturdy. He wasn't sure what he was expecting from someone who turned their arm to rock.

"Right… So we get something of value…" Straight to the point. Pleasantries were fine, but work needed to be done. "That means hunting something, looking for rare minerals or flora, or crafting something, though I'm not sure which would be best or easiest."

Khalid made a show of looking at the groups slowly forming around them. There certainly were quite a few of them. "There's going to be quite the competition for the objects scattered around the island. Perhaps we should figure out what our strengths are? Personally, I can see through solid objects, albeit hazily, and I can see objects that have a bunch of magic in them. I can also most likely pull anything buried out of the ground fairly easily. Oh! And I can transform myself into all sorts of myriad helpful shapes!"

"Well, I don't have much talent for magic. I'm an artificer. Normally I'd be in favor of making something, but materials are another thing…" Rurik mentioned before eyeing Khalid. He had yet to show any aggravation toward the fairy using his head as a seat, instead wondering how it was the other man could morph his body. "I don't think I've seen a magic like that. How do you do it?"

Khalid paused for a moment to think. This would be a prime opportunity to try to punk him by acting all embarrassed about it as a 'culture thing'. On the other hand, they were already starting to fall behind the rest of the teams. Probably better to regretfully pass on the opportunity. "I can push my mana into objects and then move it around to manipulate their location and shape. If the item's a mixture of different materials, I can separate them out. That's how I make the pigment for my skin. I can also manipulate the shape of the materials, which is how I performed the sign trick."

Rurik rose a brow at that. Into objects, not his muscles, or biomass, or limbs. That was a strange way of speaking, and that came from someone with a fairy using his head as a stool. Either way, that would be something to prod later. For now, it made things easier.

"Here," Humming, Rurik picked up a rock and tossed it to Khalid. "Push some mana into that and then drop it."

If what he said was true, then Rurik's mask should see a greater density of aura in the stone. Stretched for materials, Khalid's body could serve as a replacement.

"If your limbs don't follow the same logic as mine, does that mean you can reconstruct them if they're damaged or severed?"

Ena's slightly pointed ears perked up and wiggled a bit when she heard the other two introduce themselves. She tilted her head and gave it a bit of thought and flew over to the boy named Khalid, she plopped herself down on his head and banged her fist against his "hair" a bit. It felt solid, a bit too solid, and it made a weird clinking sound.

"Ehhhh, it's like you're made out of buildings...I best you're really good ad building buildings...can we hand you in as an item?" She muttered, "oh right."

"Artificer, I guess you can call me that too!" Flying back to the not very comfy but at least somewhat soft head of Rurik, Ena decided to introduce her own magic as well, "I'm supposed to be super good at magic since I have a lot of mana, but uh, I think I have a disease?" To be fair, Ena didn't really understand her own condition.

"I can't actually cast spells! ...But just not on the outside world! So I just make myself really strong and then I punch things!" She exclaimed with a slightly unfitting smile. "Hey hey I say, why don't we make something that can help anyone cast magic instead of getting some super exclusive item? There's gotta be a lot of people like me or Rikrik here! Right Rikrik?"

Khalid attempted to raise his hands to catch the stone thrown at him, but fumbled and dropped it to the floor. He bent over to poke it, pushing some of his mana into it, then stood back up straight. "That should do it. Not entirely sure what you could be looking for, though? And yeah, I can reconstruct them if they end up damaged. It's a bit more work to restore them if they're severed, though, since I have to absorb more material to remake them."

He paused to consider Ena's proposal. "I'd assume that to make an item like that, we'd need someone who at least knows how to cast spells? I sure don't, but I'm also not an artificer."

"Explains while you look like a hyperactive ball of light," Rurik mused aloud. How strange it was, being incapable of using magic while having mana in excess.

Looking to Khalid, Rurik watched the rock through the mask and sure enough it became more dense. He tapped his mask a few times, as if answering that he could see more than they could due to the visor.

"Huh… Well, punchy's idea isn't all that bad, so let's go with that," Rurik suggested. The strange properties of Khalid's body saved them the effort of extra materials. It was already susceptible to manipulation, they just had to separate a piece and make it more welcoming of others' mana. "We're on an island filled with mages. I don't think finding one to test it on will be an issue. First priority is making sure it doesn't blow up in our faces."

Unfortunately, that was only one tribulation during the object's creation. Khalid quite literally lent a hand, and upon separation of a piece of Khalid's body, it took some work to stabilize it while keeping it susceptible to mana. Then there was the issue of unintentional discharge. The device could intake a spell, but was not reliable in when to release it. It took further time and effort to work on a trigger for the device, but after a couple of discharges, the absorbed spell could be released on command and with lesser possibility of self-harm.

Professor McGuffin was already waiting for the new scholars arrive, as the sun was slowly setting over the horizon. A few teams had already returned, holding different plants and gem stones and caged animals. He was already accepting submissions. He stood at a table set up with a magic circle and a deck of divining cards. One by one groups stood in line, getting graded on their success. A few others stood sheepishly away having been unable to uncover anything of value. Some were trying to buy extra items off of other groups. The first team to return was surprisingly Luce(Who was barely covered by large leaves haphazardly thrown together in a covering of some sort) and Yanagi. They had another partner, but it seemed that there may have been a slight hiccup in McGuffin's divining when he made the teams. The two never found their other party member.

Once it was their turn, McGuffin looked for their third member. "Hmm... I count only two of you... Oh confound it, I could have had all teams have three members then!" He remembered his frustration from creating the teams at the start. It was unfortunate that Divination was not an exact science. "However, I can firmly say that I don't need any magic to know the importance of the item you've brought. The Ghost Eye is a commonly used component in divination. The plant itself is not particularly dangerous on it's own, but the location you found it was most certainly an issue... As I can see with you're current state, Mr. Luce. Well done."

A few more hours had passed. It was almost the deadline. Most groups had returned by now, but the most interesting ones were still on their way. In fact, the next group was now arriving. The group of four had returned, seeming a little exhausted from their trek.
"My you look like you've spent quite some time exploring. I do hope you found something of interest." He took a look at their item.

A tail feather from a Weather Gobbler was not always an easy find. They make there nests in difficult to reach places and with the fact that they tend to nest together, the multitude of refracting lights can make the climb treacherous. It requires a firm understanding of how to overcome illusions. "The Tail feathers of the Weather Gobbler are an excellent conductor of the Wind and Aether Elements, two elements commonly used in illusory magic. As such they are actually currently being used by many artificers for the purposes of making light displays. I don't know everything about it, however I know they are currently well regarded. I'm impressed."

Only a few minutes after the group of Kess, Findel, and Diastrea returned, each coming from a different location. They had split up and waited things out as to keep themselves safe from being attacked by Pantheo and his team, who was currently chewing his goblin partner out for being unable to stop them. They approached with their items. McGuffin Looked them all up with a stern gaze.
"An dishonorable move for certain." He then softened his scowl into a smile. "Fortunately we are not knights. Magic is about action and reaction. The stronger of the two wins. Your action was greater than their reaction. I can not fault you for that." He looked at the items. They actually weren't the most difficult of the hidden artifacts, but they were still worth some points from the way the test was designed. "I'm impressed you were able to so effectively make use of the situation. But you aren't earning extra points for finding items on your own. Still, nicely done."

With only seconds left to spare, a crew burst forth from a nearby workshop they had claimed for the last 24 hours. They had spent every ounce of time they had ironing out kinks in their system, and now it was almost time. They weren't going to make it. At least not without the help of a quick and small fairy with no issue carrying at least twice her size. As the item was dropped on his table, McGuffin looked at the sundial in the plaza. "Cutting it mighty close. I would say you had exactly .0462 milliseconds."

He took a look at the device.
"I see. You made your won item. Ambitious for certain. I hope you know that I will not judge it higher simply because it was hand made." He fiddled around with it for a moment, then focused his own mana. Then he pulled the trigger, releasing a sudden fireball that light the ends of the professors mustache. "Not sure what I was expecting to happen there... It definitely is not perfect. It can be dangerous and destructive. But that's what Artificers have always been interested in. Its not a unique idea, but the design is unique, albeit imperfect. Give it another go with more time. Well done"

Everyone was graded and given points, but much to everyone's surprise, the most points given were only 3. When asked about the grading scale, McGuffin informed everyone that this test was only a maximum of 3 points. The way work was done at the Arcana Scholae was that students were expected to earn a certain number of points throughout the semester. These points could be earned by attending classes, extra assignments, research, inventing, exploring, etc. This test was really meant to let the students explore the 'campus' themselves. Over the course of the next few days, these new students were given some recommended seminars to take at the start of the year. The first one being a lecture of basic mana manipulation, another being a lecture on the base elements in use, and the last being a lecture on the introduction to magic theory.

Kess attended only one of these, and the most important thing he picked up was the fact that he actually didn't know nearly as much as he thought he did. This lead him to think he needed focus on the very basics first. He picked up every book he could on Mana Manipulation. It looked like his Arcane dart was already a form of that. But it was exhausting, likely because was leaking too much mana during his casts. He thought back to the magic that Findel and Dia performed. They way surpassed him right now. And maybe they'd surpass him for a while. But this was about him. Kess wanted to start with a strong foundation, and wondered how far he could get with just his Mana Manipulation. So instead of attending the next few seminars, he went and focused on his fundamentals.

He focused on maintaining a steady amount of mana as created arcane darts. It was difficult, but he eventually was able to keep his mana steady and consistent with his darts. However, he went a step further. He came up with an exercise. Releasing his mana in a steady stream and changing the amount. What he found was that by doing this took the form a blade, and being almost entirely pure mana, it had great destructive force. He wondered just how far he could progress with just mana manipulation. For now, this was the focus of his studies

Thalia

Both disappointed and relieved in the score they were given, Thalia found she had a bit more interest in the Fauna of this island, judging by how some of the others looked, or how she heard they looked, there seemed to be a wide array of things here. Both of interest and of danger to be avoided.

In the following days Thalia would largely involve herself with the gardening of the immediate campus, even taking up a room in a boarding house that the woman she had met on the first day was running. Truly she found it so odd being in such a location, it was not humid nor chilly, one did not need to make mortar to pack between the boards time to time, the worry of mildew was also much less and even then while simple in its fair, she found the dorm house to be well beyond what lodgings the deep swamp could offer.

Not wanting to bring shame upon her family, nor the Witches of the Swamp she decided to attend those lessons. Even if many of her kind that would be known were bounty hunters and assassins. On top of her other duties and things of interest she kept rather busy over the following days. The three suggested courses however were of little use to her, serving as a reinforcement at best. Her magic being a sorcery trait was not something that could grow much from basic studies on wizardry such as this. Attending a few other of the classes she would spend a bit of her time trying to improve and make use of her own magic, trying to incorporate what lessons and fundamentals there were into her own magic.

But for now was time for one of her side hobbies as it were, between the lectures she would attend, a course on potion making and general studies of plants, that being aiding the groundskeepers. Clipping one of the bushes, she decides to take a break, setting her clippers to the side as she takes a seat on a nearby bench on the plaza grounds. Looking at all that was before her, Thalia drifts into thought, she would have to explore the island herself, more so if she wanted to improve her magic and make potions.

Findel

Rubbing her head and laughing a bit, she did not intend to take two items from them, they would likely remain pissed about that for some time.. That was a situation she would have to cutoff early, though while somewhat disappointed in them, the man did pass them. Though to be honest she had wanted to fight them straight up, even if it had been from an ambush.

Over the following days she would attend the courses the instructor recommended, but she did not gain too much from them, well at least what she did not already know. While there were ways in which she could climb and even improvements to be had, her use of magic flowed directly through her body, because of the level of potential destruction here, she learned the fundamentals, but she would be first to admit her elemental affinity was lacking, her rune magic made it less of a strain on herself to use what she had a natural affinity towards.

During all of this she did not stay stagnant or all that lazy, she had made use of the coin she brought and her silver tongue to find a half decent accommodation, to find a store to help work in and some connections extrafollicular wise towards her old way of learning mage craft, an arena.. Well more like a glorified sparing gym that a teacher oversaw with a few muscle heads as far as magic mindsets went. Perhaps from it she could gain bonus assignments and explore the island.

With the immediate concerns out of the way, the Dark Elf now needed to find out if any Runesmiths or Magic Ink tattoo makers were on the islands, maybe even better an Alchemist so she could learn more complex magic circles to imbued into her skin. Though for now and until she became stronger scrolls may suffice. Not really having spent too much time with her shipmates during the early hours of establishing herself, Findel decided it would be best to not be a total stranger to them all.

Wandering the immediate academy grounds it would not hurt to see who she could see, or even who she might could have a little fun with.

Or at the expense of.

The group's project had seemed to acquire some interest; somewhat. Though, Rurik could tell the teacher was skeptical of it. It was dangerous and finicky, true, but it was also a rush job. The best inventions were brought on through trial and error, as well as with time to actually test the thing. His own mask was easy only after finicking with the mixture of imbued crystals. His flash bombs, too, were quite particular with the ratio of its elements.

At least now there would be time for him to work more extensively on the spell mimic--in between classes anyway. Most seemed to be catering mostly to magic users and not engineers like him. Figures. Still, the lecture on base elements pertained to his typical work, and so he mostly attended that. When he was outside lecture, his time mostly delegated to finicking with the "explosion box" crafted from a piece of Khalid in an attempt to stabilize it.

Rurik made his way from lecture to one of the workshops he had rented, ignoring the strange stares from other mages and sorcerers. Truly it was a bit strange, seeing one that looked more like a common blacksmith. There was seldom any mages with large axes equipped either. His nose was buried in his notebook, going over scribblings and notes both from lecture and of his own rendering whilst murmuring to himself. It was a wonder he hadn't rammed into anyone much like his fairy friend did the boat. Then again, he wasn't at the workshop yet.

~~~~~~~~
The assignments had gone about as well as Luce and Kyra had anticipated, save for (to Kyra's horror) Luce's lack of clothing upon arrival. The angel and his teammate were the first to arrive with the Ghost Eye, and while yes they were supposed to have three people, he didn't recall ever seeing that third person with them on their trip. Maybe Yanagi had seen them? Regardless, the mission was over and if the mysterious third person existed, they were safe.
When Kyra arrived, she'd only half paid attention to what the professor said, having been too tired to really give any sort of comment. The walk back went about as well as one would expect, with Kyra wondering just what had happened in the forest that made her and Rhea get lost so easily. She'd been so sure that they would make it out of there, but she overestimated her own abilities... If it hadn't been for that elf girl, they most likely would have still been wandering around in the forest.
A hit to the confidence, but nothing a little more training couldn't help with.
Then when she saw Luce again, well, she had a million questions; the main one being "what happened to your clothes."
Luce filled her in with the details of the large plant and his healing properties preventing the acid from dissolving his skin, which resulted in his clothing being ruined.
Kyra still had a lot of questions, particularly for Yanagi. She'd ask him when she had the opportunity. She also mentioned that Rhea was humming Luce's song as they searched for firewood, which made the angel happy. He'd love to share more songs with her if she'd be willing to listen.
Now, Kyra and Luce had looked over their options for the seminars. Luce had thought about attending the Mana Manipulation in the hopes of learning something new, but the angel convinced him that attending the class would only teach him what he already knew. So, he decided to participate in the lecture regarding the base elements in use.
Kyra on the other hand, decided to attend the Mana Manipulation class. She felt there was some techniques she could learn from it.
'Your jealousy is showing.' Her pact demon had commented, earning a scowl.
The surprise of having avoided collision didn't last for too much longer. As could be expected, Rurik eventually collided into someone. The impact wasn't damaging. The only grievance it caused was the other person being none too thrilled about the encounter. The artificer looked back and gave an apology, though the bystander seemed to recoil a bit and quickly moved on. He made the mask to help with his activities, but it sure worked well as a deterrent for people---for the most part anyway. There were those few who didn't really mind it or were quite interested like the feline from the boat.
Regardless, another consequence of the impact was his notebook flying forward a bit past the next corner, eliciting a sigh from Rurik.
Approaching the corner, Rurik leaned down to retrieve the pad, his head suddenly popping around the corner to reveal the mask. However, he paused, noticing something at the corner of his eye. The eerie green orbs of the visor turned to stare silently at the object, or person.
It was a woman he was only vaguely familiar with, but from where. He hadn't spoken to her, he knew that. He definitely knew her from somewhere though.
"Sorry, Sunshine. That one's mine," Rurik said through a partially distorted voice, tilting his head somewhat. "You... Were on the boat...?"
They had passed.
Somehow.
With such great teammates, it shouldn't be surprising but Rhea was relieved all the same. She wore a cheerful smile on her thin lips that held no traces of melancholy whatsoever. Yet a sense of loss lingered behind that vibrant smile. She felt she didn't do enough. No, if anything, she was a huge burden on the team. She had added nothing of value to their quest. They had carried her all the way no matter how one looked at it. The thought weighed heavily on her heart. She would have to make a great effort to improve during her time at the Arcana Scholae.
With a renewed determination, she took the time after they were left to their own devices to rest from the long and tiring trip.
~
She chose to attend all three classes. Rhea had read up plenty on most of the subjects but not enough for much of it to stick. Though she counted as a noble, her resources were limited as well. She'd never had the chance to apply any of it before the pact and actually practice which led to the limited uses of a skill that should be practically limitless. When she wasn't studying or refining the magic she did know, a great portion of her free time was used to do research on curses and the rest to exercise.
It probably would have been smart to practice controlling her mana better so she could get better effects with less charge time or to simply acquire a new skill. However, if she had learned anything of value during the first assignment, it was that the world wasn't always as beautiful as it appeared. The sights were wondrous, absolutely breathtaking but dangers lurked everywhere and she was helpless against all of it. The heiress would have to learn more about what kinds of dangers were out there if she were to ever venture out on her own. For now, it would probably be best to avoid areas that she knew nothing about.
Even with Arjuna around to help her should she get lost or run into danger, what appalled her the most was her weak body. She'd taken care in selecting a daily exercise regimen to increase her stamina and strength. Even if she weren't destined to become the strongest person there, at the very least, she should not fall too far behind next time.
The twins had gone their separate ways, with Kyra going about her business and Luce his own. He mentioned wanting to find the girl who'd been humming his song. Kyra told him the name of the girl he was looking for and her general appearance before he was off. With that, Kyra had thought about looking for Yanagi and asking him what happened in the forest; particularly, why it took so long to try and help her brother from being eaten (if helping him was his intention in the first place).
However, the universe had a different plan for her.
As she walked, a sudden white flash landed in front of her earning a bit of a scream. Kyra readied herself, thinking it to be some sort of weapon at first... only to realize (much to her embarrassment), it was just a notebook.
She could hear her pact demon laughing at her, making Kyra's cheeks go red.
'Shut it, you bastard! I wasn't expecting it!'
'A simple sheet of paper is enough to make you leave a damp spot in your skirt... Perhaps I should have offered my power to someone less cowardly.'
Before Kyra could retort, something else popped into her field of vision. The culprit.
Though his mask was unsettling, Kyra didn't seem fazed by it. At least not as much as the notebook. She'd gotten so used to her pact demon's face that simple masks and glares did nothing to her.
Her eyebrow lifted at the question before she hummed and thought back to the boat.
"Yes, I was there... I remember seeing you there too; one of the mysterious men wearing a creepy mask."
The other she was referring to was the plague doctor, Zach.
"Need I ask why your notebook suddenly jumped in front of me?"
It wasn't often that Luce got to meet another individual with an interest in music. In the caverns, there weren't many who shared his love of singing or playing an instrument; either they had no care for it, or it never stemmed past the occasional "passing the time" tune. If there was a chance that he found another person who he could explore his interest in song and music with, then he'd be happy to take the chance to find out.
Thankfully, it didn't take him too long to find her as she was fairly recognizable as someone he'd seen on the boat. Besides that, she was the only one with green hair and a doll in her possession.
"Excuse me. You're Rhea, yes?" He approached her with a smile. "I'm sorry for showing up so suddenly. My sister mentioned to me that you liked one of my songs, and I was curious if you had an interest in music?"
He was already aware of Rhea's condition, since Kyra had been kind enough to tell him. So, he was ready to wait for her to write whatever her answer was.
How time marches on when one is focused with the greatest intent on their passions. Whether that was the case for everyone is only determined by their own truths, but whether their first three months were an instant or a slog did not change the fact that time had moved onward. Various seminars and classes and projects had already been accomplished on several degrees. It was now that these particular students were offered a certain opportunity from a familiar face: Professor Percival McGuffin.
It was then that he revealed the real purpose of his aptitude test. The Professor was hoping to find new students to assist him with a project that they were working on.
"Thank you all for coming today. I know it can be a bit of a bother to have someone interrupt your own personal studies, but I promise you this will be worth it! If not in the valuable experience then in the fact I am willing to compensate you all for this excursion." He knew some of those with him would be a little more adverse to having extra work. Still, he knew they would be a valuable asset. He just had a feeling.
"Now then, you all displayed a suitable level of skill and varied abilities that I would like to request you to come with me to a recently uncovered temple in the deserts of Andii. Andii is said possess the oldest histories of our world. As such I'm certain we will find many unique artifacts, as well as texts and indexes on ancient magics long since lost to history. Don't worry about the dangers of the temple. I had a search party of mine disable all the traps, with the help of my own clairvoyance. It will be perfectly safe for you all."
They were set to leave in about a week, giving these students the time they needed to prepare and inform anyone that needed to be informed about their extended leave.
-------------------------------------
The journey to Andii was another boat ride, much to the dismay of the Seasick Kess, though he was fortunate to have both the Doctor and Luce there to make him feel better. Of course that also meant he had those two (Luce especially) bothering him every few minutes. But their journey did not end at the Boat ride, for after that it was spending time in a caravan made up of camels to cross the scorching sands. Perhaps researching the temple wouldn't be dangerous, but this week in the desert sure was.
Kess was exhausted after this journey so far. Who thought being a mage would require so much travel time? At long last they reached the excavation sight, however. It was being upkept by a few other scholars, all of whom were their seniors. One such scholar approached them. Dressed in leather duds and with a wide brimmed hat and scruffed stubble, he looked far more like a bandit than he did a researcher.
"Well damn, and here I was hopin' that you had keeled over. Finally thought I could keep some of these old trinkets." He smirked at the much scrawnier professor. "An amusing jest as always Luther." He cleared his throat and addressed his students. "This is my colleague Luther Raze. He isn't exactly a scholar, simply a treasure hunter by trade. However he is knowledgeable on many forms of ancient artifice." He tipped his hat in acknowledgement "Pleasures mine. Now then, we've got camp all set up. Cooks in that tent, my companies barracks are down there, and the nerds will take that tent down there." He pointed to a large white tent set up squarely adjacent to another tent he had yet to name. "That one is where we keep anything of value, monetarily speaking as well as informationally so. Oh yeah, and we've marked the medical aid tent with a red cross. Keep an eye for it unless you're privy to death."
With that, Luther moved off calling after a crew of people carrying something shrouded in cloth, shouting something about appraisal values. With that, the professor stepped forward.
"Well then. I bet you all are tired. Please get some rest. Tomorrow we shall make out first decent into the corridors of history. While I have gone through and checked for all the traps and my crew here helped disable them, there may still be some unforeseen dangers." He handed everyone a small trinket, a little wooden coin with a symbol engraved on it. "These are all focal points for my clairvoyance. I should be able to locate you in case of an emergency. Also please travel in groups of no less than three. That way if one of you gets injured, another can go get help while the third stays behind. Feel free to come up with your groups by yourself. Otherwise I will devise them. Good night everyone!"
And with that, he rushed off to bed as a child would with the expectations of gifts in the morning. The students were left to their own devises for the rest of the day, but the journey had been exhausting. In the morning they would begin their first real adventure in magic.
"Dignity? Pride? These things do not matter as much as one would think. One must always be prepared to pursue knowledge with a zealous fervor some may call crazy. Pay such ridicule no heed. Even if it leads to danger, or even death. The one thing more important than life is knowing and understanding. Mya."
@Reanimator Spuds
"Heh. Unimpressed with thievery..." she noted in her journal, scribbling away. It seemed she was taking notes of the professor just as much as he was of them. "But it was fun, in its own way, nya~" she commented to no one in particular, before snapping the journal shut. After the minor assessment of her team's work when they turned in their mystic object. Seemed they passed regardless, with the man claiming that magic had no such 'honorable' barriers like knights.
Too true.
She readily approved of that sentiment. The moment magic was hamstringed or regulated by morality was the moment the world lost potential.
Well, ignoring Markus's decree. He was a king. It couldn't be helped.
Mostly.
"3 points. Conservative." She noted. Again writing in a journal. This one was about her own experience and would record all of her work, grades, and what she managed to accomplish here at the school. She would most definitely copy down whatever the teacher said of her work, and her subsequent grades she earned, keeping with it as thoroughly as the professors and the school itself; if not more so. It was titled 'The Path of a Feline Student.'
~~
Later on, she was doing more earth manipulation on the edge of the island. Weaving spells with her hands, earth rose out of the water. Then it spiraled and reached out towards deeper waters. Only to begin breaking apart, falling back into the water she drew it out from with a splash.
Practice like this could only provide so much entertainment for Dia. While getting used to this body's mana, it simply wasn't really worth her time. She prefered learning as to actual practical use. Plus, she had long since gotten used to this body. In fact, she found it preferable to a lot of her previous ones. Though, not some of her mightier ones. Like those ancient bodies. How she missed those days.
Or at least she thought she did.
It was hard to really tell, with so little of her memory intact.
At best, she knew she viewed that time favorably, and with much nostalgia.
Then again, nostalgia was often a negative, wasn't it? Prettying up things with lies crafted by the mind. Hm.
She held up her hand, drawing her mana out. And fired a last plume of superheated air that erupted into flames for good measure. Before departing to find a better use of her time.
Dia attended the 'Mana Manipulation' seminar suggested. But quickly snapped her journal shut like usual, getting up, and gathering her notes, materials, and other things, putting them all in her bag, before hefting it onto her shoulder. It was uncommon for her to ignore a lecture -any. But there were only so many days in one's life, she had learned that long ago.
It was a better use of time to put focus where it needed to be, rather than reviewing such mundane concepts.
She attended the other seminar -'Magic Theory'. And found that one much more stimulating. It was very illuminating to see how this era theorized about magic, how they applied it, and what they thought of it.
Even if it was wrong.
It was most interesting. Something worth transcribing.
In all her lives, Dia found Magic Theory, in particular, to vary greatly age to age. It was like a glimpse into the psyche of the age's people to hear them talk of such. Sometimes there was evolution. Sometimes there was de-evolution. But it was always changing. Which was quite reflective of magic, in general, she figured.
The last seminar she attended as well, purely to jot any interesting notes about that one.
But as for her own studies?
Dia made quite the effort to map out the island, the city, and the 'school' on the whole. Making sure to make a detailed description of it all within the book. As well as, write every noteworthy establishment down. Her efforts took her all across the island in those few months when she had the time.
"So, this is where they found the Weather Gobblers," she murmured to herself, before writing what she saw there. Including the birds with illusion-shimmery feathers. Aether magic was used in illusion-making. Which was not Dia's strong suit. Probably due to the Aether element, which was undoubtedly her worst. She wasn't particularly great with either. She resolved to work on those elements while attending the school.
A 'Forest of the Lost', she thought with interest to herself. Natural? Or maliciously created by the birds? She wrote about that, too. Before departing the scene. She had no intention of getting lost in there.
Been there, done that.
~
So this was the 'forest on the other side of the island'? It was made up of flower-like foliage giving it quite the wondrous, delightful appearance. But that was probably just for show. Many beauteous things were so to entice, allure, and attract. Beauty was used in that way, after all. People were beautified to attract mates. And many monsters and creatures prettied themselves up to draw in prey.
Dia knew this from first hand experience.
She had sacrificed a life or two in the past, drawn in by the pretty promises of such beauteous things. Only to meet unfortunate end.
"Hmp. Glorious. Absolutely glorious, nya~" Dia purred, traipsing through the forest, writing away in her journal. These charming flower-plants were so wonderful. Even if many were dangerous beyond words.
"Ah, a Shaman's Cauldron," she muttered, coming upon one that was all shriveled with a clear cut mark. Had this been the one those two had met? The one that ruined that man's clothes? "Interesting, so interesting~! Nyyaa!" She drew the image of the withered, killed plant. She was very familiar with much of the unique flora in this forest, including the Shaman's Cauldron. But never before had she seen one at such a size that it was capable of consuming man! Oh, the mysteries here to unravel! She was feeling a high unlike any other as she continued on in the forest, writing away.
~~
The rest of the three months were spent attending the various seminars and classes. Dia turned in any projects given right on time. Her free time was spent reading up on texts the scholae had of the Aether element, and practicing the Wind element. Up until they were called for the next heavy assignment.
~~
A personal promise that it would be worth it?
Count the curious cat in.
Compensation? If it was as worthwhile as he said, then that would be all the compensation the cat would personally need.
Recently discovered temple?! See. He was speaking her language! All the compensation she would need.
Vaguely she wondered if she had ever set foot in this 'undiscovered ancient temple'. But such was the thoughts that always crossed her mind when she came across such ruins in her travels. Occasionally they were something she had visited in the past in one of her lives. Rarely she remembered much, if anything, about them, however. So even if it had been a place she had visited, it was like she was learning all about it once again. Which, although a tad odd, was, in of itself, a feeling she enjoyed.
"My Vides?" She couldn't help but murmur, when Dia heard him mention ancient texts and indexes. Her thoughts immediately went to her own texts that were filled with the world's secrets from time immemorial. The momentary spark of anxiety left her. It only made sense for a school that professed magical knowledge such as this to be aware of them, or use them, or seek them out. If even by total coincidence.
If that were the case, then it was kind of surreal to attend a school which would use her own texts. She couldn't even remember half -no, a third- of what was written in them. If they did indeed find and use them, it would be just like always. When she rediscovered her works and read -and learned- what she already knew from them.
At this point, it was kind of a game for the entity currently known as Diastraea.
Or perhaps, it was texts and indexes written by someone else. It was entirely possible she was simply jumping the gun. There were hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of mages, ancient and new who all had their own curious works of knowledge and magic.
Those interested her much more than her own Vides.
The traps had already been disabled? Aw. It would've been amusing to see them go off, observing what they were meant to do. "Professor! Can you tell me what the traps were meant to do, mnya?!"
Shoot. They were already moving on. Perhaps she would inquire later.
~~
The boat ride was nothing special. It was the desert that was much more interesting. Dia had discarded her heavy magician cloak, opting for something much more suited to the desert. Nothing more than a band across her 'respectable' chest. And a small covering over her crotch, with a fashionable wispy, nearly-see-through coral sarong hanging from her waist. A pair of open-toed sandals laced on her calves with golden string.
The cat cared not for more modesty than that. If anyone was bothered by her state of dress -which she didn't see why they would be-, then that was their own issue.
Instead, she became mildly amused by the two professors banter. A treasure hunter? Her ears perked up. She wondered if he had unearthed one of her Vides in his time.
Again, she was annoyed the traps had already been disarmed. Where was the danger? The thrill of discovery?!
She looked down at the small wooden coin handed to her with interest. Immediately she drew a replica of it in her journal.
"Professor!" she called. "About those traps.. I asked before. Nya~ What were they meant to do? Did any go off? What happened when they did? Was anyone injured? How do they work? Are they magic? Mechanical? Both? Mnya mnyaaar~" she volleyed questions at him -well, really, at the two of them, should whoever decide to answer.
As she was so wrapped up in asking her questions, she forgot about the need to split off into groups once more. If anyone needed a third member, she would simply leave it up to chance, whichever group she ended up joining. It would be up to the others to decide if they were capable of traveling with a super-inquisitive cat girl.
Findel
Being a native of the sands, Findel was more than a bit happy to be going back to her homeland, though sadly not to her own home city, nor would it be likely they would be able to visit it on the way there or back. But such was the purpose of letters and it would be nice to be among the sands again. Such suited her just fine. Plus there was the promise of adventure, though if the traps were already cleared it made little sense more was left to discover.. Unless the Professor had something else in mind.
Gathering what she deemed needed for the trek into the sands, Findel would keep information on such to herself, unless asked, not really having offered up where she was from, it would be amusing how the others would fare, act and dress. Spending her time chiefly slumming it out with the crew, Findel would earn a bit of coin by gambling or at the expense of her fellow students and wagers in what was to be. Unfortunately this time she would not earn as much, Kess had a bit more help this time.
Upon arrival at a port city a caravan would await them, wearing her normal clothing Findel did make one exception, a white turban with face wrap that folded out partially into a half cape, overall she had full covering on like normal. Over the course of travel so far three had stood out to her, mostly as they were near her among the camels. First was Kess, his black leather would likely not be kind to him during the desert trek, the next was Dia, she had went with the logical yet also incorrect choice of less clothing being better. The nights and sand swept winds would be unkind to her, though she had seen such clothing before, chiefly among dancers or other entertainers, it was never clothing she would wear, but it was also too amusing to correct her, and lastly was Thalia.
She had mostly stuck to her normal clothing, but had the same sleeves of her arms tied over her legs, baggy pants almost in a manner and had her scarf wrapped around her head and covering her face in part. Someone had passed information to her or she had learned it elsewhere.. Still one could tell her home was not to the sands.. Curious nonetheless.
Listening to what the man had to say, his mention of a medical tent gained her interest, if it were so safe and a journey into magic why was that here? Still the fact they had a place set aside from artifacts meant she could not collect anything. A shame. For now she wasn't too interested in picking a group so much as wanting to see how they all were taking the desert, opening a door flap she would remove her headdress, holding a water skin up to her lips with slow sips, being naturally used to the sands, maybe someone would approach her in this case. If not she would do so after she got the measure of them all, she didn't want anyone that looked about ready to die from heatstroke.
Thalia
The Great Desert of Andii would be their next location, in part she did not care to go, she had much to do here. But on the other hand they were asked for, such a thing had to be responded it to, other duties laid aside. Hearing upon where they were going and the suddenness in how soon they were going, she set about looking into what books she could find to learn about the area. In some ways it was much like the swamp, brutal extremes of heat and cold, more arid than humid, but in both cases more clothing would better serve her here.
Those not truly acquainted with such places would often go as much skin as possible showing, but that would only let moisture out into the surroundings, inviting dehydration and infection.. Fortunately mold would not be an issue, or nearly as bad in ones clothing. Going off of assumptions and a little information here and there, she made a legging addition to her normal clothing and made use of her scarf as a face and head covering, bringing just shat she would need, the trip back out was much lighter than the trip in, she would spend most of her time as she did in the previous trip by boat, to herself or up top.
Upon arrival in the desert, she took notice in how the Dark Elf was dressed, she was a native here, one who did not seemingly bother to share what she knew with the others. Partially curious as to the 'why' behind this, she is mostly kept on her guard and none too open with all these new experiences she was being exposed to. Camels were truly strange creatures that smelled a bit. A camp would await them, nothing special was to be noted, though some of them were rather large and she was a bit disappointed they all were being assigned to one. Maybe it had internal dividers?
Then there were a few things that fueled her natural paranoia cropped up, from the amount of people here, the medical tent and the comments from the Professor all were to serve a roll in this. As was the case with the first meeting, the Elf was quick to take charge. Approaching the masked boy that also hailed from the swamps, she decided for her first pick someone she could know the thought process of in part would be a good start.
"How about you and I? We both come from a realm as alien and yet as alike as this. As to the third.." For now her eyes would scan, looking for what, one could wonder.
"Oh a bit of both, including some with dangerous animals. Or at least that was what we had imagined was what they were used for when they were being maintained. Now their just a pile of snakes skins and scorpion tails." Indeed she was a voraciously curious one. As much a boon as it can be a bane. But fear of what you may learn will get you nowhere.
Kess meanwhile was glad to finally be able to lie down, even if on a rickety musty cot. He turned himself upright and pulled his hat over his face. Meanwhile he gave his partners some thought. Diastraea and Findel were both competent for certain... He also heard some of the others asking to join them. At this point he wasn't too certain about the who based only off of the voice, but he guessed... Thalia? Since he knew Dia and Findel, and he assumed it wasn't the sister to Luce or the fairy. Oh, and one of them didn't speak at all so that made it an easy deduction.
He wanted someone who wouldn't get in his way while trying to look at things. The fairy was small and could fly. No to mention stronger than him, so she might be able to lift up a few doors or something. After that... Perhaps Khalid? Well at that point who else didn't matter. He just didn't want Luce and the Doctor to try and act like his parents anymore. He pulled the hat down and sat back up looking around for those around him. "Hey Ena, you seem like a pretty good partner for this. Compact, strong, and knowledgeable on artifice. How 'bout we pair up for this, yeah?"
Ena Lavenderdew
"Ughhhhhhh...pointless..." Ena was hanging upside down with her legs locked on the edge of a windowsill, it was pretty high up, dangerous looking to some, but hardly a problem if you can fly. She tried to attend some of the classes, mana manipulation was ruled out immediately. Her people all had an innate ability to manipulate small amounts of mana in extremely effective ways, it was the basis for fairy illusions. But she was an odd one out, she had a "condition" per se. Magic and element theory were a bit more promising, though Ena secretly wished she would have taken learning how to read common more seriously before trying to do the whole education thing.
After her stellar performance during the first assignment (where she left a smoking hole on the turn-in table after landing on it with so much speed and friction it lit on fire), a lot of people avoided her, but a lot also tried to approach her. She spent most of her time punching rocks, trees, and coming up with artifice ideas that could tap her innate mana.
-----------
The whole expedition thing was a gasp of relief for Ena. She made some small headway with her new artifice idea and kept on practicing her close combat abilities with mages, but it was never tested in the outside world. The boat ride was a breeze, though some people looked at her a bit nervously, she pouted a bit at those stares, she was on the boat this time, not flying with it.
"Awwwww, partners again?" Ena mumbled after she put down her "luggage", which was really just the size of a large cookie tin. She set the box on a cot nearby and opened the top, inside was a small, fairy sized bed with a lot of tiny pillows and couple layers of duvets, along with some small boxes, oddly specific looking mythril stripes, and her tiny artifacing tools. Hopping inside the pillow pile she thought about what partners she wanted, some people she met were scary...and didn't seem to take her seriously. Rikrik and Khalid seemed like they would have their own things to do now after being bothered by her first assignment related requests for so long.
Hearing a voice call her name she turned over to the cot next to her, it was Kess, who was one of the more traditional "mages" Ena had met in the school. And like most traditional mages, he was (probably) squishy. Did he just call her "compact"? Really? She pulled out a long rectangular box, well, "long" as in maybe 2-3 inches long, and strapped it to the back of her belt. With a light jump, the fairy flew over to the boy and landed on the latter's head like she does with everyone, but this time she wacked the orange-haired student a bit.
"You just called me short did you? You don't even have a third person!" She peered over the other's head and stared at him in the face with an expression of being unamused and a slightly dangerous looking smile combined. "...Well, if you carry my equipment I'll do it!" She shrugged and pointed to a box the size of a ring case sitting near her main box.
"Well, it's nice to be noticed," Rurik replied, picking up the notebook and folding his arms. "Though, I'm not sure what that makes my notebook considering my creepy mask didn't get nearly as large a reaction."
It was an obvious prod at the shriek she released a few moments earlier. Such a simple thing startled her, but his head popping out suddenly had no effect. He was sure it should be backwards, but it was amusing if nothing else. Rurik shrugged a bit.
"Bumped into someone, notebook got tossed." It was a reasonable enough thing. It wasn't as if he just chucked it for no reason. "I wasn't exactly trying to scare you."
It wasn't really an apology; more of a tease, one that wasn't finished. As Rurik made his way forward to pass her, a hand rested atop her head for a moment in a quick pat. Afterwards he continued on his way, opening his notebook and returning to his previous internal deliberations after leaving her with one final jab.
"If it's any consolation though, it was more cute than funny."
As time passed the collection of Freshmen were gathered together again. The professor had a little adventure planned for them, one Rurik wasn't too interested in, at least until the prospect of artifacts were mentioned. He liked to go at his own pace and wasn't very interested into the prospect of group field trips, but he wasn't going to pass on the opportunity for supplies.
The journey wasn't difficult, though the biome wasn't very welcoming. It wasn't too rough, but it certainly wasn't what Rurik was accustomed to. His mask, like usual, was equipped and his hood seemed to be part of a greater cloak that covered his body. The heat was a great difference from the cold and made carrying around his equipment all the more annoying, the axe especially.
"Never really been in a desert before... Don't think I'm a fan..." He murmured to himself.
The tour of the camp was short-lived. The "friend" was an artificer, but seemed more interested in the value of artifacts than their potential application, which made any interest Rurik may have had deteriorate rather quickly. He hoped this didn't just turn into making some treasure hunters rich. Either way, another group would be needed.
Looking around, a few had moved to interact, save one who seemed to head for one of the tents. One of the looker Elves from the boat. She seemed rather comfortable with everything; as comfortable as one could be in a desert. She was as good a group-mate as any. Following after her, Rurik would lift one of the flaps and lean under it to peek inside.
"Hey, pretty loner. Want to group?" He asked. "You seem pretty comfortable with everything here... and if a trap someone glossed over takes my leg, I think you'd make nice company."
Yanagi agreed to Thalia's offer with a brief nod. He had no objections, and preferred to be around those who lived closer to nature. He had found that those from the city often tended to carry it with them wherever they went. Always seeking an object for their attention, boisterous and loud. He could very well tolerate it, but not understand their sensibility. As he watched the wary elf search for a third member, he could hardly muster a suggestion.
The past three months had seen him isolated from the majority of the band. While they attended class and studied the arcane, he was among the forests and earthy outcrops of the island. Idly observing and in his own way, studying the vegetation and natural history. Occasionally he would produce an old leather bound journal. Etching the likeness of some geological formation or flora/fauna into its pages and a few lines musing on its supposed purpose or what its creator's intent may have been. Nothing of scholarly value, merely the passing observations of a boy in search of meaning. Bringing something back along with him to pay for his meals and occasional lodging, it proved to be a modest and tranquil time only momentarily interrupted by the presence of the Architect.
Yanagi's new instructions were to remain on the island until "It was time". How long that entailed was up to anyone to guess. As he stood among the arid winds of the desert that battered his face. He was no longer clad in his black overcoat. Sometime along the journey he had removed and reversed it. The interior being a white similar to his gloves. He had a loose fitting long sleeved wool shirt beneath. And around his waist several water skins hung from his belt. It evidently hand't been his first time to the desert. That occasion had proven nearly fatal several years prior. When dehydration and the freezing temperatures of the night were something he learned could not merely be ignored.
When she had heard his suggestion, Ena really put him on the spot. Yes he called her short, and no he hadn't necessarily figured out who else to ask. He held his hands up as if he had just been caught in the torchlight. "Hey now, I meant it as a good thing! And no... I havent' gotten that far yet" Well now she was off on having him carry her stuff. "Wait I don't think tha-" Perhaps he should have thought this through a bit more. Well, then he noticed the tiny tinderbox of her things. That wasn't going to be a problem. But her excitability could still be potentially an issue. "Sure, fine I'll carry your stuff."
He looked over at the some of the other groups. Yanagi had agreed to Thalia's proposition. He wondered how they would get along. Both of them had a strange feeling of morbidity. He wasn't sure what the hell the swamps were like, but if thats how people left Shambaalak, maybe that was a good thing. However, the other Artificer, Rurik was taking this opportunity to try and hit on Findel.
He couldn't help but audibly laugh aloud when he heard what he had said. "Yeah, cause nothing sounds better than getting to know someone who's bleeding out from the calf down" He wasn't certain quite what yet, but something about that artificer had always rubbed him the wrong way. He irritated him simply... because. That was perhaps the main reason he had yet to actually hold a conversation with him.
Rhea had been reading up on magic theory when someone called out to her. Peeling her gaze away from the pages, she turned to find a man with a gorgeous mane of white hair and eyes that sparkled like gems. A vaguely familiar beauty she'd only caught glimpses of before. Was he with Kyra on the ship? The memory was hazy at best but she was somewhat certain she'd seen the two together before somewhere.
Pinching her chin, she thought back to the fair-haired girl and tried to put two and two together.
These two...
There really wasn't much of a resemblance. If he hadn't claimed to be her brother, Rhea would have assumed otherwise. Tilting her head to the side, she wore a puzzled expression as she listened. When he mentioned music, her brows raised. Rhea clapped her hands in front of her with a smile as the memory came back at full force. 'He was the musician on the ship!' Memories were such delightful things. Remembering something forgotten was a fulfilling sensation full of comfort and reassurance.
Instead of answering him like normal, she hummed the song she'd heard on the ship clearly not yet forgotten. Music was one of those things that just stuck. She had very little talent in the field but loved it regardless. Out of all the things she'd forgotten over the years, she was certain that none were songs and tunes. Her pitch was higher than his own, giving the song a bit of a happier tone to it but it was most clearly still his song.
As she hummed, she carefully jotted down a response. When she finished, she stopped humming after confirming his identity and showed him what she neatly wrote down, flipping the pages of her journal when it was clear he finished reading the line on it. You must be Kyra's brother, correct? Yes, I ♡ music. I can't sing but I played a zither as a child. I wasn't that great at it. My older brother was better but I do love listening.
She wasn't feeling well. When she was writing, she'd almost crossed out the mention but then it wouldn't make sense, would it? Rhea had tried focusing on good memories. The ones of him beating her at games and reading her stories and teaching her things. The warm ones that should leave you comforted and at peace.
Unfortunately, the more you try not to think of something, the more you actually end up thinking of it. The memories were inevitable. They rolled in like storm clouds and rained on her excitement. Rhea yearned for the days she didn't have to recall those bloody hands and the deep voice of her brother casually explaining every little detail. What went wrong, what went right, the motive. They were seared into her brain at that point. She could recall the odor was so strong she could almost taste it. The recollection alone had her gut churning.
She didn't drop her smile but it twisted into a more apologetic one. She was pale and a fine layer of sweat coated her forehead. Lightly placing a hand over her stomach, Rhea quickly waved goodbye. Quickly gathering her things, she rushed off somewhere more private to relieve the nausea and calm herself. In the rush, she'd forgotten the journal
~
After that incident, she was more careful and kept to her self more often, avoiding crowds and anyone that looked even remotely curious. She wasn't sure how she managed to pull it off. This avoidance lasted until the sudden excursion they were all thrown into.
Rhea didn't mind the extra work. After all that time to cool off, she thought of the person she'd ditched weeks ago. 'Ah, I'm a horrible person.' She internally scolded herself and shook her head. He was kind and sought her out to talk about music. She wasn't sure why he went through the trouble but it was still rude of her to just up and leave. 'Perhaps I should apologize?'
Rhea mulled the idea over as she got off the ship with the others and listened to the professor and his friend explain things. It seemed like it'd be safer than their first day. That was nice. It was unbearably hot though. She was dressed in light white robes to keep her skin from getting burned and carried along a flask of water. However, it seems she had underestimated the desert and it felt as if it wouldn't be enough. Perhaps that's what the medical tent was for?+
Once they were given the freedom to choose their own groups, She directly made her way over to Luce and reached for the pouch on her belt that held her journal only to find it wasn't where she had left it.
Mild panic set in. Rhea's mind raced at the thought of misplacing something so important, frantically trying to recall where she had left it. 'When was the last time.. ?' She couldn't remember. With nothing to write down the past few weeks, she'd completely forgotten about the journal she'd left behind and gone about her days as if people around her simply did not exist.
'How inconvenient.. It felt as if her thoughts were louder. It was as if her brain was trying to make up for her lack of communication skills. Truth be told it was a little frustrating but it wasn't the time to throw a tantrum. Instead, she lightly pulled at Luce's sleeve to get his attention and pulled an arrow out of her quiver. With the arrow in hand, she used it to trace lines on the earth below them. Sorry about last time. I wasn't feeling well. Technically it wasn't a lie. Rhea hated lying. Hopefully, the excuse would be considered acceptable. Following that line, she continued to something more present. Would you like to partner up?
A small number for a score but yet it got the four man group through the first trial which was more then enough to appease Zachariah. Not needing to further discuss anything with the group he was with he started immediately for the grounds of the school city. From it he found a good hospital near the center always busy, and willing to train doctors in the works or those looking to sharpen their skills. It seemed this whole isle was well rot with numerous unique medical situations both natural, and unnatural.
Minus the required classes Zachariah would spend most of his time their, and at the artificer oddity shop he happened upon more on the side of tool's then weapons. Needing to keep advancing his own medical tools this shop ended up a perfect find as the family owned business was very open to helping out those from the school. It was rather a impressive find if he said so himself though the family's kids loved to poke and prod at his strange desire to always wear the mask.
Thus rarely outside of the classroom did the good doctor ever run into any of the other students keeping things more professional, and dodging any friendship opportunities yet it didnt mean he could dodge them forever.
...........................
"Case, and point," the Doctor sighed it had been a few days now, and after being recalled by the main teacher himself the students quickly found themselves called out onto a expedition to the sand lands. As the such the doctor had swapped clothing though still covering his body these lightweight cotton clothes were more designed to breath in the heat. On top of that sunburns were a big risk in such climates. thus he had a more intriguing item stuffed in a backpack... though for the sack of those around them hopefully he wouldn't need to use it as it was... not a great experience. Some of the students were already breaking down into group though since he had little experience with them all he would wait to see what was left at the end of the decision making and go with them. Well unless someone requested him.
