Cal leaped into action at that reflex jump, sitting bolt upright and then on all fours ready to dive out the house for a healer or stars-above-knew-what. "What's the matter?"

Kieara was confused and didn't know what it was so she just put his hand on her belly. Sure enough a few more minutes and there was another kick. She looked up. "do you know what it is?" she asked kinda scared.

The zap of flight or fight hormones left the aggressive Calamus in a drain that made him slump sideways beside Kieara on their bed again. "That's the little one; it's alive; it's stretching." He snuggled his face down beside the mound but kept his eyes upwards for his lover only. "Good thing I know animal births. Unless you need a magical helping hand for some reason, I got you ALL covered when it comes out." He grinned and grimaced at the same time. "It's so wrong saying 'it'. Could be a boy or a girl, and could already have a name we don't know... but how do you feel about saying Epic in the meantime?"

"What do you mean by saying epic?" She asked smiling a little. The baby kicked at his cheek lightly. It wanted attention. It had heard calamus' voice so much. It found it soothing and wanted to hear more.

"Whoa!" Cal jerked from the kick against his cheek but came back for more, flattening his cheek and hands there readily. "Epic meaning legendary? Came from legends? Good for a girl or a boy?" He laughed delightedly at the movement, violent fighter turned all happy daddy because of this.

She smiled. "There's an idea." She said to him smiling as the baby continued to move under the skin and kick at him. It made Kieara happy being able to watch him interact with the baby. Even if it was through her belly. She smiled as he loved on it all sweet like.

Calamus patters his fingers and sings. There are no faerie baby songs because there never was any faerie baby. He does what he knows, animal songs instead. "You're safe in your den, it's Winter" and "Stretch out your wings, it's Spring."

Kieara smiled and listened. Maybe it was only her, but his voice sounded like satin. He sang beautifully. The baby seemed to think so too because as he sang he or she became more active. She smiled watching her skin ripple slightly when it would move.

Cal's eyes widened and he caught his breath as the woman's skin actually moved from within. He knew gravid mammals, and to affect all those layers... "Epic must be some baby!" He wondered if he could sleep like that - feed them that afternoon, not be bothered by any visitors due to their return to Pixie Hollow, and spend the day and night fetched up fiercely against his prize. But that would be focusing on one and excluding the other, wouldn't it.
He rubbed and rubbed the spots Epic had marked from within and all around the rest of the enlarged mound. But he stretched across Kieara's lap with his chest against the swell and he looked up at her instead as he sang next. Romance was not officially encouraged since it distracted from labor (( 1984 novel much? )) so this song came from the underground.

Kieara smiled and listened as he spoke. "Yes they are. Gaining nice strong legs and such." When he began to sing to her the smile on her face seemed to widen. "Oh cal...." She said softly to his sweet song. She couldn't bend over to kiss him and didn't want to disturb him so she kissed her fingers and touched them to his forehead.

The man grinned into her touch, the same rowdy hawk-chaser who bullied to get things done in society but with all the support and kindness in the world for life's teammate.

She was a bit taken back at his change of day and night. She loved him either way though. She smiled and leaned back again relaxing. The next few months passed and soon she was due any day. She couldn't wait. But the further along she got the harder things got. She could barely get around now. The fairies were not happy at all with any of this. And Kieara was scared often times to be by herself. Especially after the numerous attempts on her life to eliminate their baby.

Those attempts were the reason Cal had a bad feeling since that first evening, getting his belongings during the lull after their arrival but hesitant even to leave Kieara alone to go out for food after that. He tried setting up animal guards but also had to trust to Kieara's powers.

Faeries died from those attempts. Badly. Within hours of Calamus finding out who they had been. Often going down in a circle of gnawing teeth or alone and bloated lurid with venom. Given the choice between Pixie Hollow or his girlfriend and baby, society could bleed to shambles. He never arrived home wearing carnage and simply said "That one won't bother you anymore" to his sweetheart if asked. The single reason Calamus wasn't seized and executed himself was that these killers and their puppeteers kept arranging to do things the unofficial way.

Kieara didn't like when he would come back like that. She was a peaceful creature. Though lately she's been more and more nervous and restless. Maybe it was the ever edging closer due date. Maybe it was the attempted murders. She didn't know. But something was definitely different. She wanted some way to take things further. To show Cal even further how much she loved him. But she didn't know how.

Much like Kieara's apprehension about the Mainland mission, Cal had no idea his more-than-girlfriend was having these feelings about wanting to demonstrate her love for him. So many signs resonated already.
She could have screeched "What have you done to me" the day she became certain of her condition - but didn't. She could have resented the male's continued good health while aches laid siege and her midsection grew more full and restrictive by the day; or could have blamed him for not being able to make all those things better. She could have been a banshee of chemical changes and nerves. She could have made girlfriends who talked her into loathing him. Instead Kieara treated Cal warmly and she still cuddled in bed so what did he have to doubt?

Once Cal went out in the middle of the night. This wasn't a fast death to an attempted killer, this was torture. No sun, dark new moon, then Light faeries had only their physical limits to defend themselves, unless they could distill starlight.
This one couldn't.
Well at least now their house wouldn't burn down from refracted sun rays the next day; Calamus disposed of the other agents this one had revealed.

With all the faeries disappearing and presumed Faded, not only did Kieara's family feel like they were under covert siege but the rest of the districts started reinforcing themselves. The atmosphere in Pixie Hollow took on a decidedly military air. Cal spread the word that this was all the doings of the leaders, that Kieara's household were happy to live in peace and they were creating a war by lashing out.
He thought about moving them into hiding, but another animal faerie could simply order a bug swarm to comb the island.
He thought about finding a mammal giving birth out of season to help Kieara prepare herself, but supposed the grunts of effort and the fluids might have the opposite effect. Everyone knew about the Garden faerie squeamish about dirt. (( Rosetta: "Ironic, isn't it?" )) When the time hit, Cal would simply be Kieara's best coach and supporter.

Kieara continued to wait ever patient for their baby to arrive. She couldn't wait. She wanted to meet them. The military air that surrounded them did nothing but make her nervous. It gave her the suspicion she might be sniped at any moment. Which was highly possible. A little more time passed and she found herself sitting outside enjoying the early morning rays of sun that the land had to offer. She was often up early because of morning sickness. But then she would just sit and watch the sunrise.

Cal dove outside in alarm, as he had done half the mornings he'd woken up alone. Then he spotted Kieara and instantly soothed from vigilante to nurturing. With a wave after Kieara saw him, the lanky male sighed and settled on some vegetation without even coming towards her speaking range. The expectant father realized he'd been acting up the mother-to-be's back end quite a bit and she probably needed a big ole' bowl of By Herself. Yeah, not everything could be helped by pitching in.

Kieara looked over hearing him. It made her smile. She stood with some difficulty and navigated over to him. She then lowered herself beside him. "Good morning." She kissed his cheek. She then sat in a comfortable silence with him as she watched the sunrise. As the morning went on though she began to feel funny and soon she grasped her stomach in pain.

Calamus's eyes gleamed fiercely - things were either going very wrong or very, very well. He supported Kieara's back and then very gently placed his arms around her in a ring below the breasts that rested on the fertile mound. "Is it sharp? If it feels like a squeeze around here, these phases help you, they're helping your body make a way. Say aloud now, every one of these brings you closer to meeting Epic face to face and in your own arms."

Kieara practiced the breathing exercises he had taught her. "Y-yes. It's sharp." She managed to say through the pain. She winced as it happened yet again. She was scared but oh so excited.
