Kingdom Hearts: Gate to Paradise

"...Hehe.. i don't even know what came over me... it's like.. I've used that staff before....or something." Kai said between gasping breaths. Spent both physically and mentally, he wasn't going to be fighting anyone anytime soon. "..I didn't think that kind of stuff tired you out though... " He chuckled, trying to catch his breath.

Then the clapping came, and Virie was taking point in front of him. He reached up to try and stand, but it took all it was within him to do so, and even with taking up his staff again to lean on, there was no way he was in any shape to fight.

The woman giggled slightly behind a raised hand. "Oh? So you're going to protect him now, are you Princess?" The woman stepped sideways then hopped slightly. "Names Jaq, Princess. And if you haven't guessed, I'm WAY out of your league.." Thunder struck behind her, the clouds in the sky seeming to shift, but whatever was forming in the heavens wasn't quite complete. Not yet.. "OH! by the way, How'd you like my pets? Not as much as they enjoyed your little town, i'm sure, but still, aren't they cute!?"

Virie swallowed hard, keeping her gaze directed at Jaq. She heard Kai drag himself up behind her but felt danger from the one in front of her like how a deer senses danger from a lion except in this case, the lion was a full grown thunder lion and the deer were young and injured. It felt like the only reason they lived was for that woman's vain amusement. Taking her eyes off of her could spell death... but at the same time, it wouldn't matter whether she was looking or not. There wasn't much of a question about it. Even if Jaq was a completely normal person, they still wouldn't be able to put up much of a fight and she clearly was not normal in the slightest. They were like mice, running through a maze for the amusement of the cat.

"I will for as long as I have to..." Virie trailed off, trying to sound more sure of herself than she really was. It must have looked silly with her standing there, legs shaking, without so much as a real weapon, just some old looking key. Jaq could have just stood still and she wouldn't have had the strength to get up there and do anything. In fact, even without being as exhausted as she was, she probably wasn't strong enough to climb up onto the roof without help. Something was forming in the sky between the thunder and it looked even less friendly than the wolves had.

"Your pets are cuter dead," she retorted, gripping her key. If it was so great a weapon, changing form into some kind of amazing thing would be really convenient right about now. Actually, some kind of gun with a wide enough blast to compensate for her terrible aim would be even more convenient as she couldn't even get up there with a sword or a staff or whatever.

"Why haven't you just gone and killed us yet? Why did you have to destroy everyone on the island?"

Jaq strolled casually back and forth on the ledge looking down on Virie and Kai in their ragged state. "bold words for a girl just barely able to stand, and with your guard dog having exhausted all of his magic power." She said casually, then bent over to look at her with a broad smile. Amused? You bet she was.. but she wasn't allowed to kill them... Not yet at least.

"For fun." She answered with a wink of a acid green eye from under her hood. "That... and it was better than them all getting sucked into the void when this world gets swallowed up into the darkness." she stood up, pointing to the thundering sky and whirling clouds of black. Plus, my puppies were hungry. So why waste the hearts, right?" and an eerie look came upon her face.

"...you.. crazy little... bitch. those were our friends! Families! neighbors who you just killed off!" Kai yelled out, but nearly fell over when he tried to take a step forward.

"Oh don't sound so self righteous!" Said Jaq as the sky split with a crack behind her, large chunks of buildings being uprooted and sucked into the giant black void. "Time for an ADVENTURE!" She giggled.

Virie felt sick at the thought of wiping out everyone on the island for fun but questions tugged at her mind. She evidently knew a bit about what had happened in that room with the lights somehow or at least had some idea of it, more than they did anyway. Why were they still alive? What was with this void? Why would hearts be wasted? The thoughts didn't get too far, though. The sky split open and all hell broke loose. An adventure? No way. Unless her greatest weapon decided to turn into something that could fly, the island was literally being torn asunder along with everything on it and that included both her and Kai. Once more, she willed the key to turn into something useful but it just wasn't happening. Seeing a house fly off in front of her, her knees finally gave out and she collapsed face first into the ground.

When Virie fell it was all Kai could do to crawl over to her side and help her up as Jaq cackled to the skies before vanishing into thin air. It was slow at first, a gentle lift as if they were learning to fly, but after that thing grew as hectic as they were helpless. Tossed about in the air as buildings and debris shot up and into the blackness beyond. Kai held onto Virie for as long as he could, but it was no use...he was too tired the the winds were too powerful.

Then..it all went black.

"Unh...." Virie groaned, fluttering back to consciousness. She staggered to her feet, wondering how long she'd been out. Then she looked around and came to the realization that this was not the islands. It was a darker, more urbanized town with tall buildings and lots of street lights, unlike any place she'd seen before. It was a baffling thing. Looking around, she noticed that Kai wasn't with her and clenched her fist, feeling the key in her hand again. Of all things, why was it that she had to have it instead of Kai who could have been thrown just about anywhere.

"Kai!" she called out, stumbling out of the alleyway. Sadly, her mind told her not to get her hopes up. They'd be lucky just to both be alive and hurled to the same place.

Twisted shadows on the blue sands of a baren landscape. Winds carrying a chill that reached deep into his skin and gripped his bones in a vice. He was standing in the middle of ... some kind of graveyard, but where there should have been tombstones instead were thousands upon thousands of strange looking swords that varied in shape, size, and design so that no two were exactly the same.

He took in a deep breath, reaching out a hand to touch the hilt of one, and the voice of someone behind him whispered their title, but there was no way he could understand them. There was something interfering.. the sound of rushing water.

Kai woke to the sound with a casual yawn thinking of it as nothing more then that sounds of the ocean. The dream was strange, but he'd grown so accustomed to these random dreams that provided no answers or useful information that he passed them on without much of a second thought.

What did concern him however was the feeling of cold stone against his back and the splitting headache that came with a vengeance. His hands rose to touch his head, and sloshed ice cold water across his face and front which forced him to sit up abruptly with a start and a gasp for air.

He rolled forward to find that not only his hand was wet, but HER was completely soaked, and sitting in the lowest pool of a fountain with blaring lights in the middle of a town eclipsed by nightfall. It was a calm sort of town, one that had many people wandering it's streets and families who had made do with the hand they'd been dealt. Everyone was different, but same, in that they all had come from different worlds taken by the darkness and somehow found their way here.

It was these came calm mannered people who were gathering about the spectacle of a new arrival. A young man, probably 17 years of age, appearing in the fountains of the 3rd District. This was something for the papers as it had been so long since the last person to arrive. Still, they couldn't help but to stare as he stared at them in question before standing up from the freezing water and clearing his throat, looking of all reasons like a wet dog with his shaggy black hair and sopping wet clothes.

"...Anyone got a towel?"

Virie staggered out of the alley and into the streets. She had no idea where she was, only that it was not home and that home probably no longer existed. It was an extremely sobering thought. It was a city full of people, most of which seemed to be going about their own business. Many seemed like they were in a hurry, something that felt pretty foreign to her. Looking around, she picked out a man in the crowd who seemed the least busy and took a deep breath, walking up to him. He was tall, extremely tall with long black hair and a red cloak.

"Excuse me, could you tell me where this is?" she asked, not really expecting a useful answer. The man seemed to ignore her but just as she turned to walk away, he answered.

"This is Traverse Town."

Great. Some great good that did her. It was an odd name for a place but she guessed that every world had their own way of naming places.

"Most who have survived their worlds being destroyed manage to make their way here."

Ah. Now she was getting somewhere. The worries of having to explain how this black void sucked up her island faded as she came to realize how many people were here and how this must be a normal thing in the greater part of the cosmos. Then her thoughts drifted to her mother and the others on the island. Maybe they'd survived too. That thought was dashed all of a few seconds later, though, as she recalled the fine print. Those who survived the destruction made their way here. All the others hadn't, just her and maybe Kai. Wait. That meant Kai must have landed somewhere around here, just in another place.

"Say, did you see a boy land here recently, about 17, black hair, with a staff?"

She left out the part about how said staff froze everything within a block of it, figuring that that wouldn't be too helpful unless there were a bunch of others with a similar description falling out of the sky on the same day.

"Not yet.. you're the first one we've seen so far." Came the calm tone of a tall male, dark clothing and a crest of the Griever as a pendant worn about his neck. His hair was wild and brown, grown long to help cover a long scar that crossed the center of his face. Despite his cold appearance however, he was calm mannered, and friendly. "Though there has been a bit of commotion recently. Heartless have started popping up all over the place. Most of the people here are being advised to be careful when wandering about the 2nd and 3rd districts." He explained.

Kai stood before the crowd, and arched a brow at the odd way they were just sort of...staring at him. Then a lady lunged at him with her hands outstretched and Kai only just barely moved out of her way and let her wall into the fountain.

"What's your deal!?" Kai exclaimed, then narrowed his eyes as the people started jerking and moving about in an eerie fashion. Then each seemed to explode into clouds of black smoke to reveal a large group of heartless clad in clanky armor and a few more who were small and wild looking, sinking into the ground and popping up again.

"So much for finding Virie right away..." Kai heaved a heavy sigh then took in a deep breath as he raised his staff. "...well at least i got to take a nap first.."

"Ah, thank you," Virie said, heading off in the direction of the first sign pointing to the second district. She figured that where there was danger, there would be Kai. Not even considering the fact that she had no idea what a heartless was or that her supposedly greatest weapon of all was still just a bronze colored key more suitable for poking out an eye than it was for actually defending herself, she threw open the doors to the second district and walked through without being mowed down. So far, so good. She made it about a couple blocks without incident but got a feeling that she was being watched. At the same time, she got the feeling that something else had grabbed the attention of the creepy-crawlies, taking them away from her. She really needed to figure this key thing out but right now, Kai took priority.

"W-wait a second kid! It's dangerous out....there." The man with the griever necklace watched the girl take off, and shut his eyes in thought for a moment. The girl looked rather helpless, and by the way she had taken off, he could see she was in a rush to find the boy with the black hair and the staff. Then he wondered more on the girl herself... he'd noticed she was carrying a key in her hands. What a strange thing to carry around...

"...Wait.. could that kid have been the wielder of the keyblade....?" His eyes narrowed at the thought, but deemed it ridiculous to think everyone running around with a key to be the keyblade wielder. Still.... that girl was going to be in a world of danger wandering around all by herself.. so with a huff he took off after her hoping he could catch up to her before anything else did.

Time flew by and azure flames howled from him as the block had dropped in temperature. Cold fire rushing out in waves to engulf all he could perceive as an enemy until finally he was backed against a wall. "..They just...never end." He complained, thinking it would be better to make a run for it. The more time he wasted here, the longer Virie was alone where ever she had ended up. He just hoped it was in this same town.

"Can't think that way." Kai intoned, before being struck in the chest by the spinning kick attack of one of the armored creatures, sending the boy slamming back against the wall with such force that it nearly winded and disarmed him in one go when he hit the ground on all fours. He hacked and coughed but Kai didn't stay down, using his staff as a crutch before charging back into battle. "Just go away already!"

Hearing the cries of battle in the distance and the sound of things dying, Virie rushed through the next set of doors, vaguely aware that the man she'd been talking to before was following her. He seemed to be in a hurry but not like the kind that suggested that he was looking to hunt her down so she paid no mind to it, focusing on getting to the center of all the action where she was sure she'd find Kai. However, she didn't dare call out, lest she draw the attention of the dark things that seemed to be converging somewhere in the direction she was heading. She could see them on the rooftops and in the ground, shadows moving without any object to cast them. Her key flickered a few times as though responding to them. Throwing open the last set of doors, she entered district three and hurried down the stairs. When she felt the temperature drop, she became sure that it was Kai, right in the middle like always.

"Kai!" she called out, realizing it as a mistake just a few moments later as a few of the shadow things turned their attention to her. The closest one was a short armored thing with a skull-like white head. It leapt at her, jaws first. Feet unwilling to run now that she was finally here, sarcasm racked her mind and her right hand shot up, thrusting the key into its eye... or she would have if she hadn't missed. Instead of getting it in the eye, she stuffed the key into its mouth and like anyone would have expected, it bit down. Blood dripped from her arm and the creature looked at her with bloodthirsty eyes for a moment. Then the light in its eyes faded and it fell apart piece by piece. First the legs disintegrated, then the arms and body. Then even the skull cracked, disappearing before it hit the ground but there was no time to celebrate as another one ran up, smacking her back into reality, the reality known as the side of a building.

Shadows were blown away in shards of ice that glittered the diamonds on the chilled air in the dim light of the night, Kai dead center of the heartless drawn to him for some reason or another. He didn't care 'why' so much as HOW they didn't seem to end. Then his name was called and his attention was drawn toward the upper floor toward another door where he saw Virie's head appear. That was before of course she seemed to be attacked and thrown aside.

"Virie!" Kai called out, and broke into a run, kicking into the air to run across the heads of a few shadows creatures to get free of the thick of fangs and claws trying to tear at him. With a tuck and roll he hit the ground after freezing one of the armored things helmets to provide him with a stable platform to jump from and ran up the steps.

"Back off!" He called, flying toward the creature that had knocked her down and with a lunging swing of his staff the creature caught the business end aside the head and was sent spiralling off and over the wall to the next floor. Kai took a knee beside her and reached out a hand. His eyes were angry at the heartless, but they also showed the fatigue of using a power he still had no idea how to control. "Come on, Virie.. we need to find somewhere safe."

Virie moaned, cradling her head. She really wasn't cut out for all this fighting stuff. It seemed that even just one of these things was enough to leave a pretty good dent in her whereas Kai was taking them on by the hordes. Sure, he didn't look so hot right now but there were tons and tons of these things, more than she cared to count. A few moments later, he was already by her side. Letting him help her up, she took a second to regain her bearings which wasn't too hard since the way to go was the way away from all the the shadow armor things.

"These monsters don't seem to go in the area two districts down from here," she said quickly, scanning for the door that she'd come from. To her surprise, the man she'd been talking to before was still there but now wasn't the time to be asking questions. Not letting go of Kai, she made a beeline for the door. It would have been really cool to go fight off some more of those shadows but she frankly had no idea how to work the key still so dodging it was or at least dodging as best she could. She was pretty sure that stuffing the key down their throats was not the way it was supposed to be used even if it had worked.

Kai let Virie lead the way, and as they passed the man with the long brown hair, he exchanged a look with the man. The eyes of this man was cold...and even though they'd passed for only the fraction of a moment it took them to fly through the door, Kai could see that he was leagues apart from him.

Those were the eyes of a warrior, someone who's seen things some would only find in nightmares and came back more or less unscathed.

"Come on!" Leon said simply, gesturing for the door before pulling out a large edged weapon with the handle of a gun. With a single step forward, an explosion of fire provided them with the cover needed to escape into the second district.

Kai threw himself forward at Virie's side, blasting through the door with Leon on their heels, weapon at the ready should anything else decide to pop up. And pop up they did, from the walls of the alleyway, though the windows, and even crawling out of the shadows in every corner. The creatures were drawn to something stronger now, like something they wished to feed on more than Kai's heart. They lunged at Virie, so Kai and Leon took up the offensive on either side of her.

"What do they want!?" Kai growled, trying to conserve his energy but was failing miserably with each swing of his staff.

"The Key!" Leon replied as they rounded the next corner and the Doors to the first district were coming into view. "Keep running!"

"What a useful super power," Virie muttered, dripping with sarcasm. So the key finally had a use. It was a magnet for the scary things. So on top of being unable to fight, she was now the official target and probably would be for all time. But one thing she did understand was that if she got back to the first district, it'd probably be a lot safer. If they were lucky, the shadows might even stop following them. The mob had redoubled its efforts, seeming even more aggressive than before and even though their helper seemed so strong, she was pretty sure that he could defend himself... not both of them at the same time. Without much else she could do, she obeyed, running straight for the first district door.

"Just my luck," she moaned, spotting a few of the armored shadows waiting to intercept her before she could get through. There were no choices. She couldn't wait or try to find a way around. Kai and the other guy couldn't wait. So she rammed into the front one, shoulder first. Coming up to the other two, she leveled her key at them and willed it to unlock them since that was what she assumed she'd done to the other one. That was what keys did, right? Well, she officially discovered another thing that this key did. A bright flash of light shot out from the tip of the key, resulting in a massive overkill that blasted the pair of shadow armors into oblivion. The burst of light had to have been at least twice as tall as she was and probably would have wrecked the house behind the shadows if it had been anything more than just light. All of a sudden, her body felt heavy and drained and it didn't take rocket science to tell why. Unwillingly dropping from a run to a jog to a walk, she half walked, half fell through the doors to the first district. Real smooth.

Kai found the sarcasm fitting of Virie, she was a pleasant and beautiful girl in her average ways that everyone seemed to stake her on, but it was the things she said that made Kai smirk even in the most serious of situations. This was one such instance.

Still, the annoyance of the creatures just popping up as quick as they were blowing them away was getting old, and with Kai's ice and their helpers crimson flames they were using loads of energy up and seemingly only to be prolonging the inevitable. Then the path was blocked, Kai whipped around, but his staff was caught by the kick of a knight and he was forced to strike out at it instead before wheeling around again but to his surprise he was blinded by a brilliant flash of pure light that enveloped the last two blocking their path and effectively wiped them out of existence.

The light was so bright that even the creatures on him and the man with the gunblade backed away out of fear and Kai used the advantage to kick the one nearest him out of the way while rushing to catch Virie under the arm when she fell through the doors. Their new friend focused on shutting said door and making sure nothing new came through behind them.

"..THAT..was a useful super power." He quipped with a smirk.

The man put away his sword before approaching the two, strolling around in front of them before crossing his arms over his chest. "..I see... so it really did choose a Kid. Seems I made the right choice in following you.. Have you guys eaten?"

"I'm not even sure if I can do that again and I don't think it was supposed to be used like that," Virie panted, smiling as she was hauled to safety. Frankly, she had no idea how it had happened. It might not be really useful but it was a whole lot better than sticking the key down the throats of monsters. At least they were back in the relative safety of the first district without monsters trying to eat them alive at every turn. On the other hand, their helper guy seemed to be a whole lot more in tune with all of this than either of them were like he actually understood what was going on. Her stomach growled as if on cue, saving her the trouble of actually saying so. So instead she went ahead and asked the question that had been tugging on her mind since ages ago.

"What IS this thing?" she asked, holding up the bronze key.

Kai grinned, "Well I'm just glad you're alright. It must've taken a bit out of you given how you basically just collapsed afterwards. My staff does that to me too, but I think i'm starting to get the hang of it!" He declared with a proud smirk as he leaned her up against the side of the wall.

"Not even close, You're using up too much magic and wasting it on underlings when you should conserve it for larger battles or emergency." The man corrected calmly, crossing his arms over his chest. then looked to Virie and nodded toward the key. "THAT is what would appear to be a Keyblade, but somethings wrong and it's not able to take a true form for some reason."

Kai arched a brow. "...True form?"

"The Keyblade is the most powerful weapon of light one can use against the darkness, able to unlock any door, and banish any evil at the whim of it's chosen wielder. A long time ago there were thousands of what we call Keybearers who were chosen to wield it, but now it's down to only a precious few in times then Evil rears it's ugly head." the man explained, leaning back against the wall. "As history serves, the Keyblade takes the form befitting most it's user's heart and soul and forges a keychain as a sort of link. Of course you can use other specialized keychains to give you different kinds of abilities buuuuut that's getting too far ahead of ourselves considering that dinky little thing would sooner be used as a toothpick than an actual weapon against the heartless."

Virie gave Kai a small smile but she knew just how useless that move was by itself. It didn't take a hero to tell her that a one off ability for someone who had no idea how to fight wasn't a whole lot better than nothing at all. The fact that her body half shut down after spoke volumes. At least Kai only had to use his nukey thing when the enemies became too much. For her, just one or two of just about anything was too much. She new he was trying to be supportive but the truth was obvious, a truth that this other guy seemed pretty quick to point out. Sure, he was criticizing her use of it but then again, he probably didn't know that it was a total accident to begin with.

"So how do I use this thing? Up till the big blast of doom, the only time it worked was when I stuffed it into the mouth of one of those things and it still bit me," Virie asked. At least now she knew that it was supposed to be something a little more dignifying than her house key. Unlocking any door and banishing evil at a whim sounded really cool but saying that something was wrong was an understatement, a vast understatement. The toothpick comment was about right on the money. In any case, the notion that the form of her heart and soul was a small bronze key with a little rust on the edges was not reassuring in the slightest.
