On December 12th, 2559, the UNSC Infinity disappeared. They had been sent to stop Cortana, leader of the Created, from using Zeta Halo for her own nefarious purposes. As many would later discover, the UNSC was not the only force who had come to Zeta Halo with that goal.
The Banished, who had thrived under Cortana's iron yet loose regime, had sent an invasion force. After contact, no signal was sent from the
Infinity. All probes and scouts, from all sides, who went to the Ephu system - Zeta Halo's prior location - found the installation, and the fleets attacking it, had suddenly vanished. Only trace wreckage from the Infinity, Banished warships, and a Forerunner Guardian construct, remained.

For the UNSC, they had lost the Master Chief, and their strongest warship. Both were symbols of humanity's strength and resolve, the hero who had saved them, and the flagship emblematic of their post-war successes, an era which was now undoubtably over.
For the Banished, they had lost not only Atriox, but Escharum too. With the other senior leaders of the Banished trapped at the Ark, the nascent empire had been left without a central commander, but while the cracks could be seen visibly forming, the Banished were more than content feasting upon a ripe galaxy.

Whatever happened at Zeta Halo, it had been the end of Cortana. Her Created empire immediately fractured, breaking down into warlord states as AI carved out what they could of the galaxy, using what Forerunner assets remained active and available to them.
With the fall of the Created, came the return of interstellar travel. The galaxy was open once more - for better, or for worse.

It is January 12th, 2560, and all throughout the galaxy now see the future is uncertain. While some cower from uncertainty, the bold see it as an opportunity - and the prize would be total dominion over all civilizations remaining.

Regions of the Galaxy:
Human Inner Colonies and Sol (UNSC/Created)
Human Outer Colonies (URF/Banished/Created)
Doisac Sphere (Banished)
Eastern Covenant Sphere (Banished/Covenant Remnants/Swords of Sanghelios)
Sanghelios Sphere (Swords of Sanghelios/Covenant Remnants/Banished)
Western Covenant Sphere (Covenant Remnants/Swords of Sanghelios/Banished)

What is the Western Covenant Sphere?

Outside the Sanghelios Sphere, more divergent regions of the empire began to take shape, as was natural with frontier settlements. Continuously, the empire grew and grew, for thousands of years. Along the way, they found many species of note, plenty newfound colonies won the lotteries of strategic importance, and historical shifts in the Covenant Empire defined entire regions and their history.

The Western Covenant Sphere is characterized by its diverse amount of species. While the East is mostly comprised of sangheili and yanme'e colonies, the West has many unngoy, kig-yar, and jiralhanae planets, even outnumbering the sangheili in entire sectors. The Western Covenant Sphere also borders the Human Sphere, meaning planets closer to human space are more likely to have human influence, from technology and goods to bold human settlers themselves, even if these interspecies minglers were rather rare.
Due to the prominence of the Doisac Sphere in the western reaches of the Orion Arm, the westward Covenant territories have fallen largely under Banished control, or have been heavily influenced by them, with not many independent worlds bold enough to challenge the Banished outright.

For a traditionalist Covenant successor state, it is much harder to exist in the West than it is the East. Between the kig-yar coalescing and seeking to form a new nation, the unngoy doing the same, and the Banished feasting upon the grave of the Empire, many in the West are forced to evolve or die. In a way, they resemble the human Outer Colonies, suffering civil wars and glassing rather commonly.

Ironically, it was always the western-based ministries and fiefdoms who wanted independence and secession from the Covenant Empire. Now, many in the region wish they had the stability and safety of the Covenant once again.

The Western Covenant Sphere is the tough-and-tumble, highly diverse half of former Covenant space, a true melting pot of the Orion Arm civilizations.

The Shadowed Eclipse choked and sputtered out of slipspace, no part of the great Kerel-pattern assault carrier left undamaged. It had put up an amazing fighting retreat, taking Karves and CRS-class light cruisers out with it as it soared across the stars like a blooming pyre of magenta lasers and enwrapping yellow flame.
Shipmaster Tatan 'Kuram, at several points throughout their journey, must've feared that the ship might simply come undone in the stresses of slipspace - its physical radiation shielding was nearly too broken to allow for slipspace travel in the first place. Yet now, the ship's flight from battle was a success.

Despite all their other damage, their sensor systems were still intact enough to give the ship an accurate enough read out of the system. It looked like one of the planets was inhabited, as well as its moon, and ships were circulating around a portion of the system's asteroid belt. Anything more specific, however, needed to be investigated more closely.

The Eclipse's issues were without end. It was a Gods-given miracle the very spine of the ship hadn't snapped under the pressure of intense battle. Were this the age of the Covenant, the empire might've decided it better to scrap the vessel than repair it, but such luxuries weren't available in this day and age. The Eclipse's best bet was to make friends with someone with a decent enough shipyard, or return to the territory of the Arbiter.

Still, the Eclipse was close to Banished space - and while that meant danger was high, it also gave the assault carrier and its crew a potentially great chance at striking at key enemy locations. Ultimately, it was 'Kuram's decision on what to do.

"What shall we do?" Shipmaster called out one of the Eclipse's bridge crew. "Give me a damage report," commanded Tatan 'Kuram. While waiting for a response, Kuram started formulating several plans and outcomes. Throughout his many years of battles, he had learned to think on the fly. He thought they might try finding an inhabited planet nearby to repair and catch The Banished by surprise. But he realized that doing something like that would be foolish, seeing they had barely made it out last time by the skin of their teeth.

The young Sangheili returned with the damage report, and after skimming over it, Tatan 'Kuram sighed. "Okay, we will need to get repairs and soon. We can't be floating like this in space. Our vessel is great, but there is little we can do in its current condition. However, I know my crew and what they are capable of!" shouted Shipmaster Tatan 'Kuram.

Kuram glanced at the sensors and saw an inhabited planet and some ships in the distance. Kuram commanded his crew to advance so they could investigate. "Make sure to tell the Skymaster to prepare the banshees. I don't want any surprises," said Kuram before returning to his planning.

As the assault carrier closed on the inhabited planet and moon, a flotilla of seven small vessels, escorted by over a dozen fightercraft - likely Banshees, given their location in the galaxy - emerged from the moon, and moved to intercept. As the small ships got closer, the Shadowed Eclipse could tell these were kig-yar raider vessels, with an escort of seventeen Elsedda-pattern Banshees.

"Halt advance!" the distinct voice of a kig-yar came over the proselytization network - it seemed their language was broken, whether they spoke human English or the sangheili language. "You no display colors on I-F-F! Swords, Banished, or In-Dee-Pen-Dant? Which are you? Answer quick! Weapons just as swift!"

"We mean you no harm," Tatan 'Kuram calmly replied. "We are from The Swords; we were severely damaged retreating from a banished flotilla. We are looking for a place to repair our damaged vessel and return to Sangheilios with the intel we have collected on the Banished," said Kuram. Sir, the Kig-yar are widely renowned for their engineering. They may be able to help us repair our ship," said the young Sangheili from earlier. Kuram thought for a moment. Kig-yar, would you be willing to help repair our damaged vessel? It's not for free, of course. We are eager to help you with anything you need in return. Inclined Tatan 'Kuram in a calm and polite manner

"Swords..." the shipmistress considered the new information. "Sanghelios good trade partners in past. But Banished also good trade partners now. Pre-dick-ah-mint, no? Yet you offer now, and Banished too occupied with trying to rule Eayn. Brutes eat kig-yar at time. Sangheili never. Will help sangheili. Yes-yes, dock in port. Core-dee-gnats provided...now."

The communique flashed on the holographic display before 'Kuram. "You no take long. Job in mind already. Care-ree-err will take month or two to patch up, but years to fix fully. If staying for years, could perhaps offer bigger local role. Shall see though. Big news from Eayn due soon. In-dee-pen-dant kig-yar nation soon maybe. If Banished no glass Eayn first. Ahh-hh, welcome to my home-planet Alyte."

The coordinates led his assault carrier in a shipyard slip just large enough to fit its bulk. The kig-yar defense ships escorted the carrier to the slip, and peeled away once it was safely secure.

Attention all crew, we are guests here. Don't cause any trouble, and help around as best as possible. Fusan 'Vongamee, report to the bridge," announced Shipmaster Tatan Kuram. Fusan reported to the bridge moments later, "Yes, Shipmaster, how can I be of service? Asked Fusam. I need you to keep an eye on the Kig-yar and their communications I don't want any surprises," said 'Kuram
