Did you hear that, Sari? He isn't afraid of you. He think he's safe. Doesn't he know what you've done?
Sariel didn't release her hold on her friend, keeping both arms locked around him as he brushed mud off of her. She had no intention of letting him go until he forced her to, and as of right now, he seemed okay with the whole situation. Of course, he also had no way of knowing what was going on inside her head. She wanted to tell him, to explain that she was losing control and that her tentative hold on reality was slipping, but she couldn't. Even if she thought he could help, she couldn't force herself to form the words. Asking for help had never done her favors before. She trusted him, but lifelong habits were difficult to break.
Oh, yes, that would be fun, wouldn't it? Telling him that you're getting crazier by the second?
He'd leave you in an instant. Even a human has a better chance alone than with you by his side. I'm surprised he hasn't dumped you off yet. He's more persistent than I thought.
He cares about me.. I think..
I cared about you too. I wonder if he'll cut you open too..
He doesn't care, idiot girl. He's using you until he has no need of you, then he'll be gone.
"Really?" she asked aloud, her head still tucked down against his shoulder. Her eyes were open, staring at nothing. The question hadn't been directed at him, of course, but rather at herself. Her other self? She didn't know. This was all confusing and wretched. All she knew was that she was suddenly filled with doubts about the very person she was embracing. Was her perception of him skewed? Did he actually care? He had almost kissed her before, hadn't he? On the roof? Maybe that had all been in her head too. Oh, no.
Things kept changing and she didn't know how to handle it. Back on the roof, now that she was thinking about it, she could recall how she felt when her friend had embraced her. Her mind had been completely silent for the first time that she could ever remember. It was so freeing, so.. beautiful. But now that he was in her mind, it was as though there was no escape. Even here, in the comforting hold of her companion, her mind refused to silence itself. Worse, she was back to questioning everything she thought she knew.
