Epiphany of Dreams

Ellie sighed. Fishing a cell phone from her pocket, she hit the speed dial to her work with one delicately nailed hand, shaking her head and coughing a little to herself. As she heard the line pick up, she answered in short, airy tones. Every couple words, she punctuated with a small cough, telling her boss she would be staying home sick.

As Ellie wandered down the street almost aimlessly, she clicked the phone shut and gazed around almost unseeingly. A small coffee shop sort of place caught her eyes and she drifted towards it, licking her lower lip thoughtfully. As she pushed open the door, she heard the tinkling of a bell and looked up at the door frame curiously.

"As much as I hate to admit it, but Joshua is right. Even historians and scientists rarely do their research alone. If we are going to form a proper hypothesis, we first need to find out what we all have in common; save for apparently being involved with Joshua's wet dream." Jake then mentioned.

"Dude, it was not a wet dream…" Joshua said.

Jake chose to ignore Joshua's last comment.

"Anyways, how about we take up this douche's offer? I mean he said he'd buy it for all of us, so there's probably some form of mental stimulus going on up in his brain." Jake added.

"I already said I was busy, besides why would I want to enlist the help of two nerds? The things I focus on are not for the faint of heart; nor are they for children." Jessica responded.

"Well, you have a point for Joshua. His voice gives him super powers but not much else."

"Well, my dear, I am neither." Josh said, grabbing Jessica's hand. "In anyway possible." He winked and kissed her hand before she pulled away and slapped him. "Okay. That was completely unnecessary." Josh responded, rubbing his cheek.

"Okay. So he's a bit of a prick," Jacob said, agreeing with her. "But all of us need to find out what these things are before something happens to us. This is obviously not just a dream."

"Agreed," Josh pulled out a pocket mirror and looked at his cheek. "Aww, shit. You left a mark." He closed the mirror and rubbed his cheek again. "Oh well...maybe I can tell Ashley that I got in a fight or something." He stretched out his arms and put them behind his head. "So guys. Are we going? I have a date at 10."

"Ashely?" Jessica felt sorry for whomever Ashley was. Obviously Joshua was a player and an idiot. She really had no intentions leaving with them, but... Jacob did at least have some idea of the seriousness of the situation and the dreams. Reading through all of these books would go by faster if there was help.

"Fine." Jessica started walking, heading towards the place they had mentioned. "You can help me research. But it's SERIOUS research. There have been a lot of unexplained murders lately, and my intuition tells me that it's related to these strange dreams."

"Especially if you two freaks are having them too."

"Watch whom you are calling a freak. Granted, you do have every right to call Joshua that. Oh screw it. I am not a formal man, nor will I ever pretend to be. My name is Jacob, for some reason I seem to be called Ishmael a lot lately. So you could call me either for all I care." Jacob responded.

It was his luck that he'd somehow be paired up with strange goth and a flamboyant playboy. While it was true that he had wished for things to be a little more adventurous ever since his sister left, Jacob wasn't sure if this was exactly what he had in mind.

"Okay Hose Nose," Jacob said pointing at Joshua, "Since you are kind enough to buy some coffee. Where exactly is this place you are talking about?"

Josh smiled, "It's Café Toujours, located right on Downer and Center Street. It has a French name, so you know it has to be good."

"So by your logic, if I found some dog poop on the street and called it Le Crappié, that means it would be an epic piece of shit? " Jack retorted.

"Dude, we've already established the fact that you are a sarcastic life form. No need to counter everything I say."

"Will you two freaks hurry up? I do have more important things to do than babysit nerds."

And so, with little love for her two escorts, Jessica led the way to the agreed upon place of eating.

Inside, she plopped in to a booth seat and arranged her books on the table. Deliberately trying to take up as much of the side as possible so neither of the boys would sit down next to her. Jessica flipped open one of the books about dreams to start skimming over the pages.

"Order me a hot cup of tea. Preferably Earl Grey, with cream and sugar."

Ellie narrowed her eyes as a group entered the small building. A wave of deja vu washed over her and swayed slightly in place. She searched her mind for where she might have seeen these people, these... children, whom she'd never met. It would be unusual, creeepy, even, for her to casually approach them, she decided.

Sitting on a stool against the counter, Ellie instead watched them with a dark, intent gaze. She had ordered coffee, frothy with milk and lightly sweetened with caramel, which she now sipped.

Hmm... she ordered hot bread, dusted with cinnamon and whipped cream as she continued to gaze at these people. It struck her as she heard the woman order. That voice.... she knew that voice more than those faces, which simply seemed dauntingly familiar.

Seraph sighed and from the back of the restaraunt made her way to the front where a group of teenagers had seated themselves. A short second before rounding the corner into their view she donned a smile of an angel. She tilted her head and "Hello'd" in a sweet tone.

"How're y'all doing today?"

She didn't hesitate for an answer. (Most just responded with a nod anyway.)

"Can I start y'all off with something to drink? Sweet tea? Coffee? Soda? With the winter coming up so fast you might want to try some of our seasonal flavored coffees?"

Perfect opening. Not a single rock in the road. She'd been repeating herself all damn day. Seraph wouldn't change it up now though. Not with being so close to closing and what not. She continued to smile as she awaited an order. The young girl in all black murmured something about hot tea and Seraph nodded and tapped a finger behind her back.

Her head had been throbbing all damn day and now that this table had arrived it was even worse! She reminisced about her dream but shook it off immediately when she turned to the two "gentlemen" and awaited their orders.

"Uh yeah, I'll have a Mountain dew," Josh smiled sweetly at the waitress and felt a pang in his shin as Jessica kicked him. "Ow!" He looked over and saw her shoot a quick glare at him over her book.

"So, any word on the ghosty thingys or whatever?" Josh asked, sighing and putting his head on his hand.

Ugh. The guy was an incorrigible flirt. Didn't he realize there were more important things at hand, here? Jessica felt no remorse in giving him a good kick.

"I've not even begun reading, you twit. This takes research." Jessica shoved one of the books across the table towards Josh and then another at Jacob. "Why don't you both do something useful and start looking for things that might somehow relate to the dream. Honestly, the only connection I've come up with so far is the weird deaths that've been showing up on the news."

"...do you even watch the news? Nevermind. They found another body this morning and I think it's someone we saw in the dream last night. You've heard that myth about people dying in their dreams will die in reality too, right?"

Seraph nodded and pivoted swiftly and made her way to the back of the restaurant and passed through the open doorway into the kitchen. She prepared the soda first -- simply filling the glass with ice and then held it beneath the fountain is the liquid seaped between the open crevices.

She then swiftly filled a plastic teapot with piping hot water from the coffee brewer and placed it on an underliner. She decorated it with lemon and tea bag and spoon.

In her right hand, Seraph dangled a tea cup from her index finger and held the underliner that balanced the tea pot on top of it. In her left she held the glass of soda and a straw.

She made her way back to the table and silently placed the drinks before the corresponding customer.

"Are you all ready to order or do you need some more time?"
