So, peep this:

Alternate universe Hong Kong setting but definitely post-industrialization with slight hovercraft flitting about, like pictured below.

763458619_ccb8cf4608_z.jpg

On one side of the river is a tea house.

The other is a coffee shop.

Just like leaving it on the pot or letting the leaves steep too long they are bitter enemies. (Hurr, get it?)

Well more like rivals actually. More than just in their business even their employees are rivals. The shops are only blocks away from the locally dubbed "Martial Arts Town", the section of town that is host to almost 89% of the entire region's martial arts schools large and small alike. The proprietors of each shop are themselves alumni of the schools.

(Also there's a large chain bakery shop caught between the two of them since it supplies both stores with their pastries and miscellaneous baked good needs.)

So the coffee shop employees and tea house employees are the young folk currently studying under whatever school of martial art they dedicated themselves to, the proprietors are the old folk 38 yrs. old and up.

The bakery shop and its employees... well, who gives a fuck about them they're the neutral party-- they're the stage in which the coffee and tea people have their tense yet polite show downs etc.

So a secret revealed! A foreigner business wants in on the neighborhood and the locations of the coffee shop and tea house have been scouted! Both must now scramble to keep their business in tact. Which is a prime time for the town's festival celebrating... something distracting enough that shop sabotages, alleyway ambush fighting and disruptions of regular business hours can take place.

So while the young folk are off having their epic mano a mano wuxia fights, the old folk are "negotiating" with the foreigner business proprietors which actually devolves into more wuxia fighting with slight mecha action. (alternate technology vehicles modded to carry things like robo-fists and the like).

Possibilites of...

Kidnapping! (Probably of one of the old folks by the invading business to strong-arm either store into giving up their location or whatever)

Romance! (Scandalous rivalries turned into trysts!)

Sabotage! (Of shops, or rerouting the bakery's deliveries to either store, of regular business hours)

Wuxia showdowns! (In the neutral territory of the bakery or the Town Celebration-motivated tournament between the coffee shop and tea house)

Some... other things I haven't thought of! Now what does all entail for you as the player?

You get to make up a silly wuxia-style nick name and fight people, even fall in love and be tragically torn from them because of stupid rivalries. You might even get to pilot a hoverscooter that's been outfitted with a cannon that shoots out day old baguettes (because if you actually shot the competition with real bullets we'd spend more time RPing in a jail than in an urban neighborhood which is less exciting).

So my question is this: You down?

Muffin of the Eight Pains, descendant of Brewed Bun, is indeed down.

As mention in the cbox I'm interested in playing one the guys coming in wanting to buy out both shops (or bye one and sabotage the other).

Q & A (BECAUSE I REALIZE THAT POST WASN'T ALL THAT COHERENT AT ALL)

Q: So... wait, what's going on? WHAT?

A: There's a coffee shop and a tea house. They are rivals. There's also a bakery that supplies pastries and baked goods to both shops and serves as the neutral territory. Eventually they all band together to drive out Invading Business which is basically a fast food joint. In between all that will be wuxia fighting, falling in love, rivalry-driven shenanigans and a "mecha" fight or two.

Q: Wait, mecha? MECHA IS IN THIS?! 8D

A: Yeah sure, just picture this:
Jet-Scooter-Concept.jpg

...With like, robo-fists welded onto it. Or a small-caliber cannon that shoots day old baguettes.

Q: So... there's martial arts in this?

A: Yup. The coffee shop and tea house are both part of a very economically rich albeit working-class area of alternate universe Hong Kong. This rich part of town also happens to be the home of several styles of martial arts schools.

Q: Waitaminute... why this an alternate Hong Kong setting?

A: Well one is that the very first setting picture I did (drawn by imperial boy and hosted on flickr by some dude who is most definitely NOT imperial boy) is the driving force of this entire RPG-- and that picture made me think of "alternate universe Hong Kong". Not to mention both coffee and tea flavors also sort of reflect the cultures found in Hong Kong like Chinese, Nepalese, Congolese, Indians, Filipinos and the occasional European. :B

Also because... GODDAMNIT THERE'S MORE TO ASIA THAN JUST JAPAN ASSHOLES.

Q: And this "wuxia" business? What? WHAT I DON'T EVEN WHAT?

A: Look at it this way, you can name yourself whatever you want like some hybrid name of say... "Kamala Chang" or like "Ah Fai Cayabyab" BUT! But your other name could be "Falling Leaves" or "Iron Fist" or "Stone Monkey". Isn't that exciting?!

Also, you get to describe beautiful fight choreography. Think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I mean, hell your wuxia name could BE "Crouching Tiger".

Q: And you also advertise romance in this RP? What? Action and romance? Action in my romance? My bad romance? ...RAA RAA RA-AH-AH-AHH! ROMA! ROMAMA! Ahem.

A: Yeah, rivalries naturally breed that Romeo & Juliet Syndrome in people so why not let some tragic love bloom amongst the clashing of swords and flying of fists?

*this spot reserved*

Practitioner of Cha-Do "The Way of Tea" perhaps with the cutsey catchphrase of "Okakura Tenshin my forgive you, but I shall not!" Too much?

CAMPY HUMOR AND DIALOGUE IS ENCOURAGED.

ALSO: Character sheet forthcoming.

I'm reserving Silk Phoenix descendant of Silk Crane's place here.

Also reserving her image here:

... D8 And to explain Zypher's image's character's clothing... I'm just gonna say there'll be one-swipe Superhero wardrobe changes. So when you guys fight, you have to take off your uniforms and reveal your flamboyant wuxia battle gear.

And as for a headcount:

- CoffeeCakes
- Vay
- Ocha
- Zypher
- Torsty
- Arachnion
- Tegan

Amirite?

In answer to your previous question: I'll go with the coffee shop. :)

SO RIGHT!

AS FOR WEAPONS! I CHOOSE THE JAVASPEAR! Forged by Tibetan monks while still hot the blade was dipped in steaming java and cooled in fresh snow from the very mountains themselves. Then bathed in caffeine every day for 300 years as prayers were made the the wealder would NEVER RUN OUT OF ENERGY!!!!

It was bought off the relic black market so it has to be genuine!

The Alternate Universe Hong Kong Setting

When you try to visualize how it would look, refer to this picture:
763458619_ccb8cf4608_z.jpg

Demographics

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Hong_Kong While it's an alternate universe (which will explain the setting picture and technology) it's still Hong Kong, full of various people. And as a note, I will CUT the next bitch who calls it a "former British colony", the return happened in 19-fucking-97, let that shit go!

And in the case you need help with your civilian name after choosing a demographic:
http://www.20000-names.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_Chinese_surnames Keep in mind that Hong Kong is full of Cantonese speakers and while there is some Mandarin usage, it's mainly Cantonese. Jyutping is the Cantonese version of romanization.

Wuxia Name & Martial art School
The usual formula of a wuxia name is Adjective/Verb + Noun/Body part/Animal + Name(Optional). In rare instances, sometimes it can be double nouns like "Silk Phoenix" (:3 @Zypher, "silk" and "phoenix" serve both as nouns) Girls will usually have flower-based names, guys are usually animal-based but don't let this limit you! Mix and match as you see fit.

So some examples are in order:

Dark Cloud Hong (Adjective + Noun + Name)

Weeping Hair (Verb + Body part)

Flying Monkey (Verb + Animal)

In the event you're completely stumped go to these places:

http://wotg.raventower.com/
This is a full wuxia name generator-- the downside is that 80% of the names are very silly sounding. Silly IS what we're going for, but it's up to you how silly it is.

http://watchout4snakes.com/creativitytools/RandomWord/RandomWordPlus.aspx
If you got maybe an animal in mind but you just can't think of a verb or adjective, this is the place to go-- hell, you might not even want to be named after an animal if you come up with a really good adjective/verb + noun name!

As for naming your martial school, using the same formula for your wuxia name can work and all you have to do is add "Fist", "Technique" or "Style" to the end of it to make it more school-like and less like a name. Also adding direction words like "Northern" or "Southern" can add more oomph. Or even going all English can help, "The Way of [adjective/verb] + [noun/animal]". Keep in mind, that the realm of the animal kingdom isn't restricted to only earthly animals-- heavenly animals such as the phoenix or dragon are fair game. Just remember those animals are highly regarded and you'll come off cocky if you use them.

If you're not sure how to even go about naming a school, it helps to narrow down the style you want your character to use:

Technology
In terms of the mecha fighting, since the alternate technology has made vehicles that hover in the air and water, just imagine some stock, domestic-use versions of these and have your characters weld things like robo-fists onto them to do battle or have a pilot and someone in the backseat wielding an extra long bo staff to prod the enemy off their vehicles etc.

Backstory: This is where you give a little bit of your character's history. Bits of their childhood. Their trials at their martial art school. Who they have grown up to be so far. How they came to be employed at their store. Any history with other characters if you choose to have pre-existing relations. Explain anything pertinent about your character in this section.

Martial art Philosophy: This is to get you in the wuxia mindset and help you loosen up for the campiness and flightiness of this RP. You can get as Bruce Lee-ish as you want; if you can tie in your philosophy with tea or coffee or the art of baking it's a plus in campy humor. Like say, "Calmness in battle is the same as tasting tea, through acute observation your surroundings become clear and you understand the situation at hand." Or "Attacking an enemy should be like the first cup of coffee in the morning—strong and energizing." Get in as much punnery as you can possibly can. This section and the Backstory section can be short and succinct or long and detailed—just don't cry if some people don't slog through the long parts.

Name: Chin Mungfu
Wuxia name: Swift Cobra

Martial Art school: Mont'ka/Striking Scorpion

Employed at: Big Bag business with a working name

Age: 28

Appearance:

Cobra-Commander-gi-joe-5206598-1280-960.jpg

Backstory: As a boy Chin was always getting into trouble, but the trouble known at love was one he successfully avoided. His father died while his mother was still with child in a mining accident and his mother of a broken heart not long after his birth. Raised by his grandparents they vowed he would not be poor like them and Chin's parents and spent every cent they had to get him into a good school. He surpassed their wildest dreams. A strait A+ student he excelled at everything he put his quick mind to be it mathematics or the arts, even the art of fighting came easily to him in which he developed his own style.

After graduation he decided to comply with his grandparents' dreams and enrolled in university studying business, two years later he graduated and from there all that was left was the corporate ladder, where he not sits at the top on the shoulders of others.

Martial art Philosophy: To fight is not an art, it is not about showing you are better or more skilled than your opponent. It is a business deal, and just like a negotiation it must leave your opponent stunned, confused, with no options, no hope and you on top and sharply dressed. The punch of unrestrained capitalism has felled entire governments as like wise investments kickstart the even more numerous branches in the growing fast food empire so do his boots kickstart the fall of small businesses. He conducts his "business" faster than their service.

Backstory:
(To set the mood) A long time ago on ancient mountain somewhere near Guilin, Silk Phoenix's ancestor Silk Crane founded school of Sleeping Crane Fist and began teaching it to her children. Many year pass and Silk Phoenix was born at a branch of this school in Hong Kong. She grew up learning to use Sleeping Crane Fist with much ferocity and skill and soon she was the best. Without proper challenge at her school she turned to other form of excitement, the hover bike gang called the Glorious Dragons. She became friends with the leader of the gang and became unofficial member. After a year of being with the Glorious Dragons she was even granted her own hoverbike. The gang likes to gather at Ji Bui Teahouse and occasionally Silk Phoenix will work there to keep in the Teahouse's good graces.

Martial art Philosophy: Martial arts are like riding a hover bike, you go in full throttle and don't look back! My ancestors and teachers would tell me to strike with speed and precision so I take that into account. It's harder to do martial arts while riding a hover-bike so I've also picked up some sword fighting techniques that make extensions out of my strikes with Sleeping Crane Fist.

I assumed I'd be on the coffee side by default, but it occurred to me that Bun's descendant would likely be a pastry person.

But defectors from one's birth clan is very apropos for wuxia, so I think she'll be on the coffee side anyway and get some parody angst out of her "betrayal." In fact...

Unless someone wants to challenge me for it (Played out in-story!), I'll be the leader of the coffee house because this kind of thing is my zone and the last time I let something like this slip, the headless horseman was played by Chaos and I want to see how I compare to that. If I stall, the other characters can assassinate me, and it would totally fit the game! :D

We'll try to choke you with espresso briquettes while you slumber. >:3 Also, will have a character sheet up after work, tonight.

There's enough for the coffee and tea shops but there's lack of the Invading Business and the Bakery, so I'm thinking maybe... people can play two people if they want, yes/no? :3
