A Spark of Magic

Amerilla followed after him as he opened the door, her eyes going wide as she looked around. This place was huge! It was nothing compared to the book store back home. No wonder the people in the city were so well educated, they had free access to so many books. Following after him in silence, she looked over some of the books on the shelves curiously, never having heard of any of them before. His question caught her attention though and she turned to answer him.

"I do not know...They told me they would test me to see what I would be best suited for." She replied softly as she looked at him. "They do not want someone of my ability to take something that I won't be able to control." She added as she looked back over the books.

"That so? Well it makes sense. You are a commoner. It's not like you've received training in controlling your magic." He said in a slightly snobbish voice. He spied a book that caught his eye and he slid it out of the shelf.

He opened it to a random page and read it over, it was a book that dealt with ice magic and everything related to it. "Personally I'm interested in the ice school. Ice can be used for defense and offense. It's a... powerful school of magic. Only fitting for someone as myself to join such a school." He said as he closed the book and slid it back into its shelf.

He looked at Amerilla and narrowed his eyes, "If I had to say, you might be suited for the water magic school. Water is mostly for defense from what I've seen. Of course this is just my speculation."

He continued walking down the rows, taking the book he had been reading along with a few other books that caught his interest, "Will you be taking some books with you? We'll need to get them checked out by the librarian before we can take them. Now that I think about it, can you even read? You should be able to considering you're going here but one can never be too sure when it comes to a country person."

Amerilla let him ramble, he did know a bit more about this than she did it seemed. She really did not care which school she studied, she just knew that the sooner she controlled her magic the better off she would be. Besides, she had heard the teacher who had brought her to the school say she would be better suited for solar magic, whatever that meant. At the moment, she was just interested in figuring out what to do with herself. She blinked a bit when he asked if she could read, rolling her eyes a bit before looking at him.

"Of course I can read. Everyone in the village can read. Just because I come from a farm doesn't mean I can't read. It's mandatory to be able to do our work." She said calmly as she crouched down to look at a shelf near the ground. "I need to be able to read order sheets for seeds and grain, we need to be able to read and write letters to family and friends and do other things as well."

Mortho held back his smirk and muffled his laugh, "I see. I was just making sure, as I said, one can never be sure with country folk. I've heard they tend to be... uneducated people, but of course, it's just what I've heard." Mortho looked up and read the titles of the books on the highest shelf, "But you could easily just be one of the good country people."

Mortho slid another book onto his arms before looking over the bundle he already had. He nodded and spun on his heel. "I'm going to check these books out. If you want to take out some books as well you can come with me." He said as he walked down the rows of shelves.

He finally approached the desk and smiled a fake smile at the aging librarian. They really needed to get a new one before this one fell over dead, Mortho thought to himself. Once it was done he stacked the books back onto his arms and he stepped out of the library and back into the hall, wondering which way was the way to his dorm room.

Amerilla just watched as he put another book onto his growing pile, ignoring his last comment. He had the right idea though, checking out a few books would not be a bad plan. She could at least try and read up on the basics before her first class started the next day. Grabbing a couple beginner books off the shelf, she followed him to the check out in silence. It seemed they weren't the only ones there as she noticed other students either studying or reading quietly in the library. It didn't take long for her books to get checked out, and now she only had one thing left to do and that was return to her room.

"Well, I'll be heading to the dorms for the night, I'm not sure when classes start in the morning but I want to be well rested for whatever I have. I suppose I'll see you around then? I mean, I'm not sure how they do classes here, so maybe we'll be in a few together." She spoke simply as she looked at him, holding her books to her chest as she stood there.

Mortho looked down at Amerilla over his books and nodded, "Right right, chances are we'll end up in a class together. I'll be heading to my own dorm as well, good night. It was a pleasure spending the day with you." He said with a polite nod, then he spun on his heel and walked off down the hall. He wasn't being sarcastic when he had said it was a pleasure to have met her, he had enjoyed it. Granted it wasn't too fun or interesting but it was far better than what Mortho had originally planned to do. And at least he had met a friendly face who seemed to put up with his fake attempts at being overly rude.

He reached his dorm and kicked open his door, he stepped to the desk that overlooked his window and unceremoniously dropped his load of books on top of it. He turned to go over to his bed but stopped as something caught his eye, he reached down and picked up a neat stack of paper that had been placed on his desk. He looked over it and realized it was his class schedule along with the rules of the college. He smiled and placed the papers back down.

Mortho then turned around completely and rubbed his chin as he overlooked his dorm, wondering if he should unpack his things before doing anything else. He shook his head and instead tossed his luggage off his bed and lied down. He stared out his window until he finally fell asleep.

The next morning Mortho awoke and dressed himself in a fresh set of clothes. Taking his sheet of paper he walked down the halls, looking at a map he had been supplied. He wandered around until finally he found himself at his first class. He opened the door and stepped inside, finding a chair that was off to the side, avoiding the large group of students that were in the center of the class. He sat down and looked up at the clock, wondering when the class would start.

Amerilla nodded at him before she headed towards her own dorm, wanting to hurry and settle down before it was too late. With quick steps she arrived at her room and opened the door, setting her books down on the desk gently and smiling a bit as she looked them over. Something caught her eye though and she picked her books back up to find a list of classes and a map of the school. Surprised to find it there, she looked it over, as well as the list of rules at the college, and smiled a bit. It seemed the school liked to take a more relaxed approached on how they communicated with new students.

It was strange, but she liked it really, it meant she wouldn't get lost or worried if she had to suddenly try and speak with a teacher she did not know at all. With the books set to the side she started to unpack her bags, placing all of her belongings away before she changed into a night gown and crawled into bed. As much as she had wanted to read those books before class, she was too tired to try and focus on words she might yet not understand. She'd read them on the way to class in the morning. Tucked in and relaxed, she fell asleep quickly and deeply.

The next morning though, she woke with a long yawn. Changing into clean robes, she headed to the eating hall and grabbed a simple breakfast pastry, reading her book in one hand as she held her pastry in her mouth rather crudely. She was more focused on reading the pages and even bumped into a few students, to which she profusely apologized. She finally arrived at the classroom, pastry half eaten still hanging from her lips as she slowly moved towards some open chairs, chairs that just so happened to be right nest to her new aquaintense.

Mortho looked to his side as he heard someone walking in his direction. He looked up at Amerilla and nodded at her in greeting, "Ah, you again. Good morning," He paused as he noticed the pastry that hung from her lips and curled his lip up slightly, "That's just in-proper. At least finish your food before you come to class. Honestly, if you keep doing such things people will think you were raised in a barn." He said with a huff.

He turned to look back up at the clock and sighed, wondering just when their teacher would show his face. He sighed and put his head down on the desk, "I am growing tired of waiting. I am never kept waiting. It's practically an insult to someone of my noble blood." He grumbled angrily. He really detested being kept waiting, he wasn't a very patient person. It's no surprise since he has had most things he's wanted handed to him when he asked for it.

Amerilla blinked a bit as she looked up from her book to see Mortho, tilting her head to teh side a bit before setting down her book upon the desk and pulling the pastry from her mouth. She chewed a bit on what she was eating before swallowing and looking over to him.

"But I was raised in a barn...or at least near one." She said before taking another bite of her breakfast.

"And you have to learn to be patient, I don't think it matters if you are noble here or not. They seem to be more interested in magic than status. I mean, this morning I met a very nice girl in the breakfast line. You wouldn't think much of her at first glance but as I spoke to her I learned she was a dutchess! And yet here she was talking with people like myself, people she would never have spoken to outside of school. Also...I think I saw the teacher before I stepped in, so it shouldn't be much longer."

As if on que, the teacher stepped in, a very lean looking man with white hair and a long beard. The classical story wizard if anyone wanted to describe him. He carried a couple scrolls under his arm and his pointy hat was slightly crooked as he turned to face the class.

"Good Morning, Welcome to Magic Basics! I'll be your professor, Dr. Bumblegrove. Here, you will learn the basics of all of the magic schools, where they came from, who created them, and even they type of spells you can expect. You won't actually be learning any spells in this class, however, you will be learning to control your base magical energy...Don't want anyone exploding the school by mistake!" He said with a laugh, a few of the other students joining him.

"Now, as all are new students and have just arrived in time for the new semester, I would like everyone to stand up and also tell me how you discovered your magical ability and why you have decided to come to our lovely college to continue your studies."

Mortho rolled his eyes, "That doesn't mean you have to act like it. I thought you acted more civilized." He said with a huff, he looked away to the side as Amerilla began to lecture him. His eyes widened slightly as he heard she had met a dutchess, he looked back to her with a raised eyebrow. "Really now? You met on here huh... I'll have to look for her and meet her. I might know her. People of noble blood tend to know each other after all."

He opened his mouth to say something about his patience and how he didn't need to have more for some commoner but stopped as he saw the instructor come in. Mortho looked him over with a critical eye and sneered slightly, this teacher was nothing impressive. If anything he looked almost like a joke to Mortho. He rolled his eyes as the instructor made a joke, he didn't find it amusing at all. Nor was he offended, but he still didn't find it amusing.

Mortho scoffed as the instructor went on to telling the students to get up and talk about themselves. He found that to be childish, it's not like they were in some low level school for children.

He ignored the other students introductions, not very interested in learning about them. He figured if he were to get all friendly with them he'd learn about them then. Someone shook him by the shoulder and said it was his turn. Mortho's face colored a light pink as he was taken by surprise, he stood up and cleared his throat.

"Well my name is Mortho Somnium. I am from a noble family and came here to hone my magic skills and be challenged since it's so much better than having a tutor. But it's not like you commoners would know about that, tutors tend to go easy on you. Anyways, I discovered my abilities when I was young when I manipulated the water in a pond. And that's all." He said simply and sat down back in his chair.

Amerilla had finished her breakfast just as the teacher told everyone to inroduce themselves. She liked the idea, it meant she could meet more people and possibly make some friends that could help her out with lessons. She listened to each person, nodding her head a bit in understanding as they said what they were suppose to. She listened to Mortho quietly, not surprised at all by what he said. He really was not the type to be polite to anyone.

"I see, Well Mr. Somnium. Glad to have you with us. You seem to have a natural talent." The professor commented before he looked to Amerilla. "You next my dear."

Amerilla stood up, looking around the classroom before speaking.

"Hello, My name is Amerilla. I come from a farm villiage out in the country so being here is a really big change for me. I'm not really here as my choice, I only recently discovered my abilities and I was told it was be a bad idea to not go and study ways to control it. Oh, and I discovered my powers when I accidentally blew up a barn." She said softly near the end before she took a seat.

Mortho nodded at the professors compliment, it was deserved after all, Mortho does have a natural talent. Even his family was surprised at how early his powers surfaced. He listened to Amerilla introduce herself and raised an eyebrow at the last thing she said. Once she was seated he nudged her to get her attention, "You blew up a barn? My, that would take a considerable amount of energy to do. I am impressed." He said softly to her, he actually was impressed. The fact that that was how she had discovered her abilities only made it more so impressive.

He turned his attention back to the professor and let his mind wander, waiting for the introductions to be over so the lessons could begin. He hoped the other classes wouldn't be like this. Otherwise he'd be bored and irritated all day.

(sorry about the short post)

"It wasn't on purpose...Do you know how hard it is to build a barn? I was lucky all the animals were out in the fields." Amerilla said with a small blush on her cheeks.

As the introductions were finished up, the professor looked over the class with a grin.

"Well, it seems we have a lot of talent here. I would like you all to know that today is going to be a general discussion day, you are welcome to take notes here but you can also find all we will be talking about today in your books. If you have yet to recieve your books, report to the library and speak with the head librarian, she will give you the books you need for your classes. Now, to start out with the basic schools of magic..."

The class continued on as such, the teacher lecturing and the students listening or writing. Amerilla herself was just watched and studying the board as she sat there.

Mortho laughed softly, "I do not but it is still impressive. Once you learn to control your magic you'd be a force to be reckoned with." He said with a small smile. He turned his attention back to the professor and donned a bored look.

Mortho sat straight and tired to look as interested as possible but really was bored, he already knew all this. He was only taking it since the college insisted he did. If the professor would be more interesting maybe then he'd participate in the class. If it wasn't for the fact that he was a noble and supposed to keep up appearances he'd put his head on the table and go to sleep.

Finally after what felt like hours to Mortho the class ended. He stood up to leave but then paused and looked down at Amerilla.

"I'm curious, what class do you have next? If we have the same one then I might as well allow you the pleasure of having me escort you there."

When class ended, Amerilla felt that she had learned more than she ever had in a life time. She had no idea there was so much more to magic than just enchantments and spells. It made her wonder if someone such as herself could really handle it. As Mortho spoke, she looked up at him from her seat, most of the other students either leaving the room for other classes or chating lightly in their seats. At his question on her next class she quickly shuffled around for her list of classes.

"I have...Energy Focus Study...Hmm...I suppose it has something to do with focusing magic. You'd think they'd have more creative names." She said as she started to stand up. "What about you?"

Tucking her book under her arm, she waited for his reply.

Mortho looked down at his schedule and nods, "I have the same class. Good thing too. I kind of... need help perfecting my control." He said, almost whispering the last part. Hating to admit that he wasn't all but perfect, but for a reason he wasn't sure of he just let it slip out. "Well then, shall we be on our way?" He said as he began to head to the door and out into the hall.

He stopped in his tracks as he saw the large amount of students already walking down the hall and on their way to their classes. "Hmph, these commoners don't know to clear a path for their superiors. How annoying." He grumbled before looking at Amerilla over his shoulder.

He sighed and grabbed her hand, "As a gentleman I need to escort you, you'd have trouble getting through this unruly crowd." He said as he began to push and shove his way through the crowd of students until he finally reached their next classroom. At the door he let go of Amerilla's hand before opening the door and stepping inside. He sighed, being glad to be away from such a huge crowd, he wasn't used to such conditions. Being who he was people tended to clear paths for him, this time he had to force his way through, he hoped this wouldn't become a normal thing.

He found another group of seats that seems to be off to the side and walked there, taking a seat and putting his head down and resting.

Amerilla nodded her head as she followed Mortho out of the classroom. She was surprised to find the hall so tightly packed together. It seemed they would have to worm their way through to their next class. She looked to Mortho as he grumbled about the people and rolled her eyes a bit. She had tucked her book under one arm so her other would be free, though she did not expect him to grab hold of her hand. Blinking a bit, she walked with him, mostly surprised by him touching her.

After all, on his own words he was a noble.

The pushed threw the crowd without to much trouble, most people were doing pushing of their own so a sorry was hardly needed. Upon arrival to the classroom, he let go of her hand, and she quickly looked over to the door. Stepping into the room, she took a seat near Mortho just as she had done before in the last class. This room seemed a bit bigger than the last one, though had the same general set up. It seemed that it was made for standing room in mind, though for why she was not sure.

Opening her book once more, she started to read again from where she left off.
