The ice fractured and splintered, snapping in a menacing way beneath his feet. In honesty, he was too far out on the lake to turn back, and as he progressed another step further, the ice beneath his feet gave way. He sunk into the frigid water, scrambling for a hold to grasp onto in the slippery surface of the frozen water. For a moment, before the terror struck, he had been able to pull himself upwards and lay with his stomach against the ice. The man lay there shivering, dark hair clinging to his face. As the water rushed over the lower half of his body, the man could feel his heartbeat slow. His breath surfaced in short raspy puffs, as he was shaking far too much for his breathing to come easily.
Below the surface of the lake, the water shifted, currents running irregular. The shadows beneath darted back and forth, one particularly large black blob heading towards the pair of thrashing legs from the outside. The foreign creature, this human, would be perfect as a subject of imitation.
