Those Which Lurk

T

The Tragedy

Guest
Original poster
Children go to their parents, saying about what creepy things are lurking in their closet, or under their bed. What people don't know, and forget when they grow older is how real these creatures were. However, few people are unfortunate enough to remain under this curse. Seeing distorted and shapeless creatures who would hunt them down.

They only go after those which can see them, as if these people were marked as their prey. Going to others is impossible, those who can't see can never imagine what these things are. Their shape can change from animistic to almost human. Only one things remains common; their black, ink like skin, and white glowing eyes.

The origin of these creatures is unknown, a name hasn't even been given to them. Only one thing can be said for sure about them, they were made to kill, they hunt down without tiring. They will do whatever it takes to get their target. However, when the sun rises they disappear from sight, seeming terrified by it. They return to whatever place they come from. To the place for those which lurk...

Well...
Well, if you were lucky enough to end up here then you have the chance to join the few people unfortunate enough to witness these horrifying creatures who appear every night. The story will take place in modern day, you can survive in anyway you see fit, but death can and will happen. Take part in trying to solve what these things are and meet with other "Seers" as they will be referred to as, or just try to survive.

Those who feel brave and wish to explore the darkness of these creatures will be putting themselves in danger, risking their lives to save them. Maybe over time, find out ways to fight off these strange creatures.

Down to the Facts

Now for a lighter tone, what will you be expected of with this. I expect two or more paragraphs, i will give exceptions to a paragraph if you still put heart into it, but i don't expect every other post to be 1 line.

There will also need to be a basic understanding of grammar and the English language, mistakes happen, but i don't want to feel like I'm reading through text messages.

Your characters will be 18 or older since most people in the world will stop seeing these creatures sometime before this point. So you will be the special ones. These creatures don't hunt down children, probably because they aren't much of a meal for them so they target the adults who can see them.

Basic Iwaku rules apply. The roleplay will start once we have 8 people but sign ups will continue after that limit has been reached

Well, it's high time we get this thing rolling, shall we?

Name: Steven "Rick" Richardson
Age: 37
Backstory:
Not much can be said about Steven's life: he was born into a modest middle-class family in Scotland, went to school, dropped out of college at the age of nineteen, sold his apartment and escaped with a friend of his on a cargo ship en route to the US when he turned twenty, and has since then spent the last two decades travelling throughout the States as a vagabond, making quick buck on whatever job he could find, be it working as a drug dealer, a hired thug or a part-time worker at a local fast food joint. As long as it paid for food, booze and fuel for his RV, he didn't complain.

For a regular person, that would be enough information to get a good idea about this rather peculiar character's life. However, as it always happens in life, the truth is not so simple: for better or for worse, Steven was blessed (or rather, cursed) with the gift of seeing things that other people couldn't see...things that lurked in the dark, waiting for the perfect moment to kill their prey. Ever since he was a wee lad, Steven coulds sense these beings hiding under his bed; at first, he tried to shrug them off as a figment of his young imagination, however he quickly changed his mind when one of said creatures almost killed him while he was walking home at night, right after celebrating his high school graduation with his mates.

Ever since that day, Steven's life was a living hell: not only he had to keep an eye out for the strange beasts trying to hunt him down, but he also had college to worry about; to make matters worse, the constant lack of sleep led him to fail most of his classes, a problem which eventually led him to drop out. After several months of constantly switching jobs and barely being able to pay the bills, Steven decided that trying to have a normal life was an impossibility to him, and jumped on the first cargo ship heading to the US with his friend, Matthew, who was also a "seer" like him, partly hoping to escape the monsters that tormented him in the dark, and partly because the idea of a life as a vagabond wandering through the States was appealing to him at the time.

Since then, the story is pretty much the same as described earlier: he parted ways with Matthew in New York, picked whatever job he could find (preferrably one which was set in the night or early evening) until he gathered enough money to buy an old RV, and travelled from town to town, searching for fellow "seers" and for anything that could help him put an end once and for all to the shadowy creatures that tormented him throughout his life.

Name: Layla McIntyre
Age: 25
Backstory:
Layla was born into a dysfunctional trailer trash family with a dad that didn't know what he was doing half the time, and a mom who was too busy to notice her kid's needs. To make matters worse, it seemed as though the McIntyre's were always struggling to make ends meet. Layla's dad worked for a construction company that did jobs all over the city, and Layla's mom was a receptionist during the day and a waitress at night. Layla was often left at the neighbor's or to her own devices and she hated both situations. Her neighbors were just as unfit to be guardians as her parents, and when she was home alone, monsters crept out of every corner, leaving her terrified.

In middle school Layla made the mistake of sharing her fears with the school counselor and the woman called CPS. 'Signs of abuse' they whispered in hushed tones. While Layla's parents were being investigated, Layla was sent across town to live with a strict old woman named Gloria. Gloria was a foster care veteran and child services relied on her to house children with 'mental issues'. 'She's like some sort of miracle worker', they raved. Gloria wasn't a miracle worker though. She was a wicked old crone who attributed idleness and religious deviancy to bad behavior. 'Put them to work. Give them their bibles. They'll act right.' was her motto, though she never shared this with CPS. As soon as Layla stepped over the threshold, Gloria put the girl to work. Clean, do homework, make dinner, read the bible to Gloria, tidy up, Bible before bed at 7pm. That was Layla's schedule for the next two months and she actually cried tears of pure joy when she was allowed to live with her parents again. She would miss one thing about staying with Gloria though, and that was the extreme lack of monsters. Layla wondered if Gloria's religious shtick actually warded them off or if even the monsters didn't want to be near the old bitch.

Layla's return to her family was not celebrated. The CPS investigation had hit the McIntyre's hard and her mom had lost her receptionist job because of it. Now there was more pressure on Layla's father to provide and he was starting to get angrier and angrier everyday. The parents hosted arguments day and night without fail and often times Layla received the brunt of the losing parent's ire. The volatile environment caused Layla to rely heavily on her school social life to sustain her sanity. She fell in with the wrong crowd and started dating a leather jacket wearing, cigarette smoking bad boy named Ricky. Ricky barely attended class and Layla didn't like it when he scoffed at her for doing the opposite, so she took up truancy as well. Less adult supervision led to adult activities and Layla soon found herself pregnant senior year. As soon as Ricky heard the news, he dropped her like a hot potato and stopped coming to school altogether.

Layla's pregnancy destroyed her social life. Ricky was gone, and her so called friends didn't want to associate with her anymore. Her home life wasn't any better, her mom constantly berated her for getting herself pregnant and her dad...Well her dad had walked out as soon as he'd found out. With her lack of social life and her toxic life at home, one would think that Layla would become depressed, but no, she forced herself to persevere. She didn't know what would happen if the monsters saw her weak and she wanted to stay strong for her baby.

Despite the odds stacked against her, Layla manage to graduate from high school, get a job at a daycare, give birth to a healthy baby girl named Faith and enroll in an online college. Now if only she could just get rid of the damn monsters.

Gabriella had always been an imaginative child, amusing herself by making up fantastical stories and imaginary friends. Since her family was quite poor and they couldn't afford nice toys and games for her, they thought this was a blessing. She had always treasured her imagination, revelling in the amazing adventures it could take her on, or just keep her occupied during a boring class at school. It had always seemed like a special gift, but that was until she started seeing the monsters at night.

At first she'd been a little scared but she'd kept it to herself, thinking that they were just bad dreams. She was able to go on thinking this until one night, when one of them had reached out and grabbed her ankle. When it had touched her, a wave of terror & loathing had hit her immediately. It was so strong she'd gone into hysterics, screaming and struggling to pull away until her parents had rushed in. They had eventually calmed her down enough for her to explain, they of course didn't believe a word of it.

Concerned they sent her to a shrink, who assured them it was just nightmares and she'd grow out of it. Gabriella was hurt by their disbelief but not surprised, it was utterly crazy she barley believed it herself. After that night she always slept with a nightlight, if her parents tried to turn it off she'd go crazy and refuse to sleep until they turned it back on. As she grew up she'd hoped that the monsters would fade away, but they only seemed to get stronger and more dangerous. This made her life hell.

They'd grown strong enough that the nightlight was no longer strong enough to keep them at bay, so the only way for her to be totally safe was to stay awake all night with every single light in the house turned on. This played havoc with her school life, she was a smart kid but having no sleep left her feeling sluggish and slow and she struggled to stay awake long enough to pay attention. She managed to barely hold on, just long enough to finish high school but that was all. After that she started taking any job she could that let her work the night shift, she worked as many shifts as she could to fill the night and slept during the day.

She's now working as a waitress in a restaurant, it pays well and most importantly she works from sundown almost through to sunrise. She's safe but she hates it, she just wants to have a normal life and be able to go out and have fun like other girls her age. She's decided to find out as much about theses monsters as she can, so that maybe she get them to leave her alone.[/fieldbox]

I like this too so,

Name:
Victor Kai
Age:
28
Backstory:
Victor's was born to drug addict parents, specifically heroin. He was a fairly exuberant child and the only thing that could silence his usual bubbly self were the shadows he saw at night. This kept going for years until he turned eight years old. Not even the day after his eighth birthday, his parents had an overdose and passed away, launching him into to foster care system. What was once bubbly and kind became quiet and reserved. When he used to love meeting new people and being surrounded by his friends, he suddenly hated being around anyone and preferred to be on his own.
Even when he was in the foster care system, the shadows never left him. He would wake up night after night in the communal bedroom and sit in the moonlight, trying not to think about the thing standing in the corner, watching him. He went to several homes but was sent back every time, usually under the notes that he was just too stubborn and quiet. He was abused in most of them but preferred to just forget about it. Eventually, he aged out of the system and worked to put himself through school.
He went to the university in the same town he's always been in and slowly found his path, finding that he enjoyed school and teaching. Though it always unnerved him to be in front of such large crowds. Even in his new apartment, that he tried his best to make feel homey because he was sick of bare walls and impersonal rooms, the shadows followed. They still came to him every night or every other night and for some strange reason, he was almost comforted by the fact that they never left him.
