Arterion was quiet as he considered his options. It was either watch this foreign Colonel fail to meet his expectations or listen to the Duchess spout irreverent nonsense directly to his face. He hadn't yet hit his thirties and already he felt too old for this.
"I will stay, then. To provide… moral support."
With that said, Arterion listened to the Duchess's words and felt his fists clench against his will. She was a spitfire, but it was hardly an endearing trait in this situation. When she approached the desk, Arterion was standing in an instant; teeth bared behind his helmet and a furious snarl rumbling in his throat.
"Sit. Down." There was cold rage in his voice, a trembling in his shoulders as if he were physically holding himself back. "Your fool King is not here to protect you, Duchess. The Emperor has no need of you despite what you may believe," Arterion sneered. "Before you wag that wicked tongue of yours again, I'd advise you think carefully. Our Lord willing, I will cut you down where you stand if your irreverence persists."
His boiling hatred for this woman was reaching unforeseen heights. Shaodor. It had to be Shaodor. He hadn't ever visited, but he was sure now that it was a place of arrogant fools rather than diplomats, no matter what this duchess might claim. In spite of Arterion's sudden outburst, he seemed entirely in control and reigned himself in, an almost pleased slump to his shoulders. Whether his words put her in her place didn't matter, only the fact that she now knew what enemies she had made.
