MCV is reporting that the NextBox will be ditching the optical drive in favor of something more digital. It doesn't seem to clarify if that means they will be going all digital or maybe they are simply tired of DVDs. If I remember right, Screwattack has already speculated that the NextBox could be getting a Blu-Ray drive, but this article doesn't seem to support that. Instead it points to the Vita's model of using flash memory and questions whether or not that will be the future of Xbox.
MCV also confirms the 18 month window rumored to lie ahead of us before this system is expected to launch in 2013. While again this is all speculation and Microsoft has responded with the usual "we do not comment on rumors or speculation", it seems like a pretty bold idea to drop physical media completely. Is it possible that the NextBox could be moving to some form of a cart? If so, say goodbye to backwards compatible discs...
