Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
~Romeo and Juliet
The Kingdom of Verona has long since been split into two factions: the Montagues and the Capulets. However, after years of turmoil and struggle, the two Kings of each faction have put aside their differences to form a more perfect country, one that is on the brink of war. To form this bond, the Kings have engaged their only children to each other. Capulet has given his only daughter and Montague his only son. The two have never met, but it is of little concern to the Kings.
However, it is a concern to the Prince and Princess themselves. Prince Montague and Princess Capulet are not in love with each other. In fact, they are in love with other people. The Prince has been in love with his lady Protector for quite some time now, but has yet to voice these feelings and the Princess and a stable boy in her home have been lovers for quite some time now. They'd never defy their parents' wished though.
Recently, the Princess has been sent to stay with the Montagues to meet her husband and become friends with him before their wedding next year. The two have decided to act the part for the sake of their country, but they are both aware of their affection for others. The Princess has even chosen for her stable boy to accompany her entourage under her father's nose.
However, tensions are rising inside the Montague Palace and beyond the country's borders. Everyone is preparing for war, even the star-crossed lovers. The Kings seem to be catching onto their children's affections for their loves as well.
