Thoughts can be fickle things. Sometimes all it takes are a few words to spark an idea and those same words can have a different effect on everyone.

Hangman

Freckled

Dexterity

The girl was waif thin and the coarse muslin gown billowed out around her tiny frame when she was led up to stand on the wooden platform. The gusts of wind brushed over the scene, teasing the items which set the scene, from the muddy curls of brilliant ginger cut short around the girl's ears to the innocuous looking length of rope dangling above her, a playful child making its presence known. The girl didn't seem especially bothered, though a little impatient, as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other while the men around her spoke. They were arguing about her size and the merits of trying to hang her while she gazed out into the crowd that had gathered to watch with an almost dreamy expression, her eyes looking beyond them at something not yet present.

Finally, having made a decision in the matter, the hangman seemed to have been well enough convinced that she could be killed without too much struggle in the same method as others. He checked the rope for length, eyeing the tiny girl in front of him. Nobody wanted to be privy to a decapitation with the head flying about into the gathered throng, not even the executioner. The breeze came again, more urgently this time, knocking hats from the heads of some of the men standing near the platform. The girl's freckled cheeks dimpled with a small smile.

As the hangman approached her at last to prepare her and read the charges, a final rush of air dragged the paper from his fingertips and the girl leapt lightly into the air. Independent of any dexterity or grace, something seemed to be lifting her higher. Her face split into a broad grin and she waved cheekily to the hangman, who was standing dumbstruck watching her glide lightly away. She alighted some several blocks away on the top of a building and turned immediately behind her to the form that was materializing.

"You gave me a proper scare waiting as long as you did" she scolded, still smiling.

Have you met Hangman's Wrath?
Have you seen his path?
Have you realised his frailty
Or instead the dexterity?

Have you met the freckled,
young man?
Or have you meddled,
In his plan?

If you met him, rejoice and love
For he deemed you not for his glove
If you meddled, fear your life
For he hates his strife

And he never gives up
Always looming above
Where with his every drop
He'll cull you like a dove

Be good to your wife
Never damage her heart
Or risk losing your life
And carried off in his cart

For he broke his beloved
Shattered her spirit
And he's forever haunted
By her without merit

Hung himself he did
For himself, to rid
Of her crying face
And her void grace

Cut her legs he did
And chained her to bed
With all his rage seeing
Her and another bedding

Now all he knows is regret
And her expression of hate
All he knows is debt
And his need to abate

So his spirit stays
As long as he hates
A man that may
Gives his wife dire straights

Have you met Hangman's Wrath?
Have you seen his path?
Have you realised his frailty
Or instead the dexterity?

Have you met the freckled,
young man?
Or have you meddled,
In his plan?

If you met him, rejoice and love
For he deemed you not for his glove
If you meddled, fear your life
For he hates his strife

And he never gives up
Always looming above
Where with his every drop
He'll cull you like a dove
