One of the Damned (Peregrine x Eli)

Zali nearly flinched as Adriel's voice cut through the strange, almost unnatural silence of the island. There was undoubtedly life on the island, but it was more the ominous slithering sound of malevolent things than the innocent, lively sounds of birds and monkeys that usually greeted her on an island. She rolled her shoulders once, trying to relieve some of the tension, before speaking in a carefully measured voice.

"There's something here, that's for sure. This island is... impossible. Everything we've seen since the moment we stepped onto the beach has been impossible. I don't know if it is someone, or something, but all of this isn't here for no reason."

They moved up the creek steadily, always staying ahead of the threads, but not going so fast that they exhausted themselves. THe whole time Zali remained on edge, and she could feel the weight of exhaustion growing on her the longer they continued. It was like trying to sail a large ship through a massive storm, always on edge and having to fight for every inch to keep the ship safe, but at least she was familiar with how to navigate a ship. This was foreign territory, impossible to predict.

True to their word, Zalika and Adriel remained calm and moved forwards, however, their pace slowed as the creek widened and deepened, the water slowing to the point where it was almost still. When it reached her hips, Zali was finally forced to halt. She heaved herself up onto a large rock, and pulled Adriel up behind her. Up ahead, the water showed no signs of shallowing. However, large stones like the one she was on were evenly placed throughout the stream.

The two friends played a tentative game of hopscotch as the water continued to get deeper. It was like the water from the strange, deep lake from before, except this time Zali knew that there was no fake bottom for them to stand on.

Once again, it was the fact that they were together that saved them from an untimely fate. Almost halfway through the rocks, and the one Zali was standing on began to rumble and shake, before quickly and aggressively moving away from the next rock. Zali flung herself forward towards Adriel, but her foot dragged on the water, and it was instantly caught by the same deep, irresistible sucking sensation that had become almost familiar. Adriel pulled her back out from the water, both of them having to fight for every inch, until Zali's boot suddenly slipped off, and she was free. She sighed, looking down at her bare foot.

"This island seems determined to disrobe me," she said, trying to grin. With a shrug she took off her other boot and threw it into the water, watching it get sucked away into the depths. "No sense in walking with only one shoe."

The sun dragged across the sky as they continued deeper and deeper into the jungled island, pace crawling as they stayed just ahead of the threads. Even though they were both conditioned to life on the sea, where there was no rest as long as there was work to be done, both Zali and Adriel were starting to get exhausted, and they were getting clumsy because of it. Was this how they were going to go, pushed to the ends of their endurance until they finally made a deadly mistake, or collapsed from exhaustion?

Her prediction almost came true. As the sun was just starting to drop behind the horizon, and it was getting so dim in the forest that the two were almost walking blind, Zali came to a halt, with the glittering, shimmering strand of a thread only a hair's breadth in front of her nose.

"Adriel..." she said, voice suddenly tight with fear. "Are we trapped?"

They searched feverishly, before finally finding a small opening in the threads, just large enough for them to crawl through. Zali shivered.

"I don't like that, Adriel. It reeks of a trap."

But they had searched everywhere else, and Adriel turned to her, his traditional smile plastered in place. "Stay calm and keep moving forward, right capt'n?"

"Right."

Together they ducked down, and crawled through the small gap.
