The Pensacola Traders

"Civilization rebuilt, by fair means or foul."
- The Pensacola Traders' Motto.

The Pensacola Traders were born from settlers and exiles from the richer cities of Florida and other parts of The South who somehow managed to rebuild some semblance of civilization in the 'Panhandle' region of the former State. Due to the expensiveness of hiring free workers to drain the swamps and grow the crops needed to feed the growing population, the area has been more tolerant of slavery than its neighbors from the start, a tolerance that grew into approval when the first trade barons emerged a half-century ago, dealing in Timber, Citrus, Rice and eventually, Cotton.

Seeking to justify themselves, the Trade Barons made sure that their practice of enslavement was not based on race or species, but rather on wealth; anyone can become a master with it, and anyone can become a slave without it. Not just that, but freedom was made as easy by allowing slaves to buy themselves out of slavery with hard enough service and signing the right papers.

Ideologically, the Trade Barons didn't declare that they were innately superior to others, but rather that they were pursuing 'Immoral Means to Moral Ends', the moral end being the repopulation of Florida through the slave trade, local procreation, and making it easier for slaves who choose to stay and start families to get freed and acquire land.

Now, the Traders run an expanding network of plantations, sawmills, mines, gladiator arenas, and 'red-light establishments' in the Panhandle Region, as well as maintain an army composed of local militias, the retinues of individual barons, and mercenaries. Pensacola's central districts have grown into a walled settlement, whose steel gates lure in traders and wastelanders with the promise of becoming rich enough to own slaves, but many of the less wise adventurers end up selling their freedoms and becoming slaves themselves.

Like a parasite, they are quickly embedding themselves in the wider region's economy; a worrying prospect to its neighbors.
