Valida was born and raised in Val Royeaux, Orlais Alienage. She was a spunky one, though also quite troubled. Valida put her family first before herself more often than not, and sometimes, that would get her in trouble with her father who only wanted to ensure she was safe and sound where she belonged— in the alienage.
Valida was determined, however, to give her family a better life than killing their cat and eating it just to survive. She (somehow) obtained a permit to work as a prostitute in a brothel outside of Val Royeaux without her family knowing at first. Unfortunately, this led to Valida being taken advantage of in the long run.
Despite her many misadventures with the humans, she slowly grew to trust a particular one, much to her own inner disgust. This human had started off as a client of hers, though with intent to help her as he soon paid the brothel quite well for her (much to her frustration) conversation. This became a chance for her to learn about becoming a rogue.
A conniving one at that.
She fell for him. She fell for the whole scheme.
When guards were sent to collect her for crimes she did not commit, but rather, was eloquently framed for, Valida made a run for it and left Orlais, essentially becoming "informally" exiled. From that moment forward, Valida made a name for herself under a different alias— The Shadow Woman. She received more formal rogue training with the thieves guild in Ferelden.
In the meantime, Valida kept her true identity under locks, however, so as to not draw too much attention, if not just enough, to her as a city elf from Orlais. Her French accent is unmistakable, however, and that she realizes. For that matter, Valida always travels with a thieves guild member and does not speak much when she's out and about. This was her life for a time until she stepped away to be on her own.
Rumors began that "The Shadow Woman" was notorious for clean kills and gambling her life away going on extremely dangerous missions people thought impossible to achieve. She became rather unconventional and while some admired her for her independence and unique way of "taking care of business", others found her to be a "knife ear that we must be rid of". Nevertheless, her alias has grown on her and now she carries it with pride, willing to do just about any job for the right price— provided she's shown basic respect.
