GODS AMONG US
Main Premise
"What is a god to a nonbeliever?"
The age of the gods is waning.
Gone are the days of reckless abandon. The time of unwavering devotion from mortal men has faded, killed by the economy of science. Technology presumes to perform the same blessings once bestowed upon man, and all it takes is a click of a button. There is no room for faith in a faithless world. And without faith to keep them strong, the gods have weakened. Some have even forgotten who they are, living amongst the mortals but not fully one of them. The Grecian deities no longer perch on Mt. Olympus, instead finding themselves in the mingles of the crowd like their common men. Time has forced them to adapt.

Faith.
Gods rely heavily on acts of worship to serve as a power amplifier. The more popular they are, the stronger their own innate powers can be, allowing them to rise above their fellow deities. This does not mean that a god who is not worshipped will lose all semblance of power; rather, they will simply be in their weakest possible state, a far cry from the days of old. And if a god remains in the weakest state for a prolonged period of time, they cease to exist. This means that they will forget who they are, and in effect, lose their innate power and immortality as well. This has forced some gods to resort to thievery and mimicking of other stronger gods in order to siphon away some power. Gods who have spent countless centuries being friends are now at each other's throats, carrying out vicious wars in pursuit of control and power. The most cruel way some gods--mainly the gods of war and lust--have managed to steal power is by forcibly subjugating weaker gods into acts of worship. The time of trust and unity between the deities is over. Now, it is simply survival of the fittest.
Worship.
Acts of praise come in many forms, and provide varying means of power. The most powerful means will be forever through the voluntary sacrifice of a mortal's own body, whether in the form of sex, self-mutilation, or acts of servitude. Animal or material sacrifice remains a heavy factor as well. And lastly, prayer and undivided attention. The gods accept any variations of these things, even resorting to trickery to gain what they need.
Eyes of the gods.
The world of the gods does not just include them. Many mythical creatures from ancient tales live on as well, passing themselves off in menial, domestic human roles. Much of this is naked to the human eye. The few rare ones who glimpsed the world of the gods have kept much of their sightings to themselves, fearing the backlash of society if they voice their accounts. But there are two ways a mortal's eyes can be opened to the supernatural: either by a mythical being's will, or spending prolonged periods of time in a god's presence. And once a mortal's eyes have been opened, they can never be closed.
