"Very few people ever get to do magic. Even less get accepted into the Academy. Consider yourself incredibly lucky, young mage – you've managed both... you've been accepted into our ranks!"

That's the first sentence of the letter all novice mages receive when accepted into the Amitran Academy of Magical Arts. That is also the sentence that opens a whole new world to you, a young, inexperienced mage. You're gonna spend the next few years learning how to beome a powerful mage, gaining important knowledge about the nature of magic and the world, builidng bonds with your fellow mages, and who knows, maybe achieving amazing things.

This is going to be a magic school RP, but it may evolve into something else down the line, after all, in a world of magic, there are many things that can happen, so you can expect that school life may at some point be interrupted by something, be it a demon invasion, the school vanishing somewhere, straight up reignition of the war, or something like that. The possibilities are many, I bet I can come up with something fun ;)

Here are some information about the world it's gonna take place in, it's mostly the same information as in the Interest Check, so if you've read that, you're pretty much all set. Otherwise, do read on.

About the Land of Maegos
Maegos 2.0.jpg

Countries/Lands

The magical land of Maegos is divided into several lands, each with their unique traits and identity, each with its own history, traditions, and customs. Here are short descriptions of each of them:

Kingdom of Man
The biggest of the lands, the Kingdom of Man is a land that puts its trust in the strength of the human mind. While they do have an ordinary army, their main forces consist mostly of mages – those who understand the world around them, the flow of its energy. The country prides itself on its many schools, and many of its inhabitants are wealthy, educated people.

Unfortunately, some remnants of the past war for independence have remained – few Animae live there, the many schools teach that it was in fact the Animae who started the war, and only minds curious enough to search for the truth know that's blatant lies. The Animae are often called "Wildlings" here, an unpleasant reminder they're treated more like sentient animals than people. Their situation is slowly getting better, but it's still far from ideal.

Wildlands
The country where all the Animae settled after the war, it's relatively young, but it has already built a culture. The culture is a bit divided though – the northern desert area is inhabited by more traditional folk. Instead of seeing magic as an achievement of human mind, the northerners tend to see it as a gift from the gods, and mages are treated like prophets or priests.

The southern part, on the other hand, has adapted the neighboring Kingdom's lust for knowledge, but keeping it separate from magic. That's why southern Wildlands are a place where you'll find many engineers and inventors. They've only recently begun to try to enhance their machines with magic, right now they're at the point of making magic energy guns. It's a start, I suppose…

Independent North
On the main continent, it's hard for a place where the Animae and humans can peacefully coexist. The conflict has however evaded the snowy North, which hardly cares for the other countries' affairs. In the North, the only thing that matters is strength of your spirit – it's a land of brave warriors, unafraid of snow, sea storms and death, sort of like our world's Vikings. The inhabitants don't really care if you're smart, or if you believe in any deity – as long as you'll sit down with them for some mead, joke around with them, and can handle yourself in a fight, you're perfectly fine.

Mages from the North tend to be focused on combat magic, rather than general study of the arcane, and they usually can do crazy things combining their strong bodies, spirits, and powerful combat magic. As such, using things like healing or illusions is an odd concept to them, usually, though there are northern women mages called Saviors who specialize only in healing.

The Animae of the North tend to be snow versions of animals: arctic foxes, snow weasels, polar bears, snow leopards, snowshoe hares, arctic wolves, and so on.

The Deathlands
You won't find this place on many maps. In fact, most non-mages don't know it exists. The mages are taught about it though, and to them, it's described as a hive of scum and villainy that no sane man would ever enter. And it is mostly true, you'd have to look hard for a good person in the Deathlands, mostly because the majority of the population is literal demons. There are other races too, though. You can find humans who are wanted on the main land, you can also find many nocturnal Animae who are drawn to this place for some reason, most notably moths, coyotes, hyenas, bats, owls and vultures.

Most inhabitants of the Deathlands care little about magical taboos, and they experiment with magic a lot, often calling upon dark forces to power their magic. That's why they have some powerful mages, who are under influence of demons or dark gods. The Animae of the Deathlands visit the main continent sometimes, while the demons prefer to stay in the Deathlands. If one were to ever visit the mainland though, they would most likely conceal their demonic status, masking as a powerful human mage.

Aquaria

The kingdom of the sea dwellers, Aquaria is potentially the safest place in all of Maegos. The aquatic Animae – seals, otters, platypus, and so called "mermaids" – the fish Animae, have easy access to the kingdom. Other Animae and humans need to either grow gills or constantly conjure up air in their respiratory system to survive there.

The kingdom, just like the North, doesn't really care what's happening on the main land. They're content only caring about the affairs of the sea – taking care of the fish, exploring sunken ships, building incredible underwater palaces – that's what they tend to do all the time.

They sometimes wander to the land, from either curiosity, or necessity. Aquarian mages tend to be the most efficient around water. Turns out if you spend long enough around one element, you adapt it better. Fire, on the other hand, they can't get any energy from. They rarely have contact with it, so it's usually not a problem though.

The Species
Maegos is inhabited by more than just ordinary humans, here are the species that make up the society:

Humans
36e00b25521727bfa20fe11e4626bc7c.jpg7ed5177fc6914de7c7dd353cf0fd48780a03920f_00.jpg

Plain white bread, anyone? Yes, the humans are the most common, and most average race of Maegos. It doesn't mean they're necessarily bad, in fact, they did manage to win that big war ages ago, didn't they? It just means they're probably all you expect.

Animae/Wildlings

The Animae are a combination of humans and animals. Usually it's little changes – ears and tail, sharper claws, sharper teeth, and such. There are however some sub-species, described here. The Animae have the advantage of animal instincts, and animal traits. They're usually faster, stronger, or more mobile than your average human. The one big downside is that they're often blamed for the war by the Kingdom of Man, and as such, are discriminated against in the Kingdom. They won't get outright attacked or anything, but stares of disgust and "Goddamned Wildlings" being muttered are expected.

Demons
attachment_98560299.jpg64a57cf50523f882cf42cfc83d9e9f20.jpg
The servants of dark gods, children of the night, the demons seek many things – wealth, pleasure, fame, mischief… and their connection to the dark gods makes them ready to use low blows and trickery to get their way. Always with horns, and spaded tails, sometimes with odd skin colors, bat-like wings, claws… they'd stand out in the crowd were it not for their ability to switch to a human form. They're very in tone with magic, due to their origin, but it's also their origins that cause them to naturally gravitate towards being selfish, uncaring, often just plain evil. The very few demons who refuse to be the bad guys are looked down on, but they exist.

Magic
This land is indeed filled with magic, and it too has its own rules. Here are just some aspects of it:

Flow of Energy
The base for all magic is the belief that everything contains magical energy – all living beings, all the inanimate objects, and in particular, the base elements – air, fire, water and earth. All people have magical energy within them, too. The only difference between a mage and a regular human is an invisible connection between their energy flow and their brain known as a Magic Link. The mages are able to shape the flow of energy to affect the world around them. A mage's training's main purpose is to increase the amount of energy they can store and process. There are different ways to achieve that – sharpening your mind through study, preparing your spirit through meditation/prayer, training your body physically. There is however no known way to create a Magic Link, either you're born a mage or you're a regular person/Animae. Demons have the luck to all have magical powers by default.

The way most people use magic is by using the energy inside of them, as well as absorbing the energy found in the water/ground/air around them. The energy inside a person tends to recharge over time, usually it takes a few hours to go from almost drained to full energy. Being fully drained doesn't always equal death, but it leaves a person very weakened, usually causing them to faint. A mage can create gems out of their energy to use at a later time, for example to absorb back and prevent themselves from dropping to zero energy. The energy can be used in a variety of different ways: to create things, to transform things, to move things, to change certain properties of things. Depending on the complexity of what you want, a different amount of energy is needed. An average mage could fire hundreds of fireballs before being fully drained, but would faint when trying to summon a dragon, or permanently transform themselves. They could succeed though, with enough training and/or energy gems.

How not to do magic
There are some rules for specific things too. For example, providing energy to a dead person will make them break inside, and revive them as a Husk – essentially something like a zombie – an unintelligent, aggressive creature that you can barely call human. Creating a Magical Link is also impossible, and any attempts to do so will end up in the target's brain getting damaged, potentially killing them, or making them permanently paralyzed. A person also can't turn themselves into an Animae, and it works the other way around. They just turn into the animal they wanted to be an Animae of, or that they are the Animae of. It's also frowned upon everywhere but in the Deathlands, to suck energy out of a living being. Mages are of course able to prevent their energy from getting sapped, but a normal human has no control over their flow of energy, so they're an easy target for a desperate mage to charge up on, and for an average non-mage, getting milked dry like that is pretty much certain death.

Gods
Surprisingly, Maegos is religiously homogenous – the people believe there are light gods and dark gods, each named after a sin or a virtue. So you may worship Hope, Compassion, Bravery, Modesty, Honesty, and so on, and embody them in their life, in hope the light gods appreciate them and take their soul after death. But, they can also worship the dark gods – Sloth, Wrath, Lust, Despair, Treachery, Cruelty… but of course no one wants that, so worship of the dark gods is outlawed everywhere (besides the Deathlands, of course). The Demons come from the dark gods, so they'll naturally work on their behalf, though not all of them. The dark gods will sometimes make deals with mortals, sometimes through demons, promising paradise, riches, beauty, wealth… but they don't always hold up their end, as is expected from the embodiments of all evils. The light gods, on the other hand, don't interfere much with the world, believing in the inherent good in people that will ultimately make them prevail over the dark gods. As such, they don't even send their equivalent of Demons, and no one knows if they even created such a species. There are rumors Angels do exist, but nobody has ever seen them, whereas plenty of people have seen (and even killed) demons.

Artifacts
An item infused with great amounts of magical power is known as an artifact in Maegos. There are two categories of artifacts. There are lesser artifacts, which are just powerful things – fiery swords, magical glasses that let you see through walls, invisibility cloaks… these all are powerful, but they need their user's energy to function continuously, and they still adhere to magic's rules. These can be created by mages, with great effort. There are also major artifacts – items that allow a mage to bend the rules of magic. These would be something like a revival stone, Animae transformation ring, a Magic Link creator… but these are very rare, since these come from the gods, usually the dark ones. Usually, they're a reward from a deal made with the dark gods. The most powerful of such artifacts is a Wish Stone – a gem capable of granting any wish, when used properly. It's said even being in its presence makes you slowly become your ideal self, as its incredible energy spills out of it, the gem unable to contain it all.

The different sorts of mages
There are of course all sorts of mages, seeing as the possibilities with magic are seemingly endless. Here are some of them, from different kingdoms:

Kingdom of Man
The greatest kingdom has a whole system educating mages, who then usually join the royal military. In the magic academy they work in teams of three, and they usually stay in these teams in the military too. The teams are named after birds: the Hawks, the Swallows, the Doves, and so on. Each member of a team like that has a different role:

Striker
Strikers are the combat-oriented mages. They have skills beyond that, of course, but their main focus is combat. They usually use elemental attacks, summon magical weapons, and such. They usually have extensive training in using melee and ranged weapons and are physically fit. This is to ensure they're ready for any combat situation.

Support
A Support mage is just about what you'd expect, a mage that's focused on enhancing others' abilities, who knows how to heal others, who has great knowledge of the human body and the most efficient ways to improve and fix it. They do get some combat training and know some offensive spells, to not get absolutely destroyed on their own, but they're no combat mages.

Defender
A Defender, as the name implies, is supposed to ensure their teammates don't get hurt, and so they learn all sorts of spells that help that: ways to nullify foe spells, illusions that confuse the enemy, magical shields, spells that paralyze and incapacitate the enemy. They get a decent combat training. Not as extensive as a Striker's, but not as elementary as a Support's. On some occasions, they're even more deadly than Strikers.

Wildlands
Prophets
Supposed messengers of gods, they tend to have a strong connection to one of the Divine Virtues, and while they don't usually know much about combat, they are often great healers, and they know magical tricks to affect the mind: calm people down, persuade them, and make them feel things.

Magineer
As the name implies, they're mage engineers. Their main focus is on creating magic-powered tools: guns, swords, simple robots, and many other gadgets. They do know a bit about other magic schools, but their main focus is altering properties of things, and creating new things.

Independent North
Saviors
The group of mages most knowledgeable about healing, these have little to no combat skills at all. All their training goes into knowing how to heal others, and they are the best at it out of whole Maegos. These are the people who either wanted to be proud warriors in the North but lacked the skills, or those who wanted to be a part of the North without having a combat role.

Other
Besides these well-known classes of mages, there are many other unnamed types of mage who specialize in any combination of magic skills. Rule of thumb is that you should probably focus on one or two types of magic, otherwise you end up mediocre in all of them. That's not to say there aren't people who try to know a little of everything, but they're usually self-taught, no respectable magic school lets their students spread their focus like that.

History
The history of Maegos is rich and long, but the most important event was the human-Animae war that took place hundreds of years ago. It's lead to the former Empire of Maegos to break down into the Kingdom of Man, and the Wildlands, with little hope of the two countries ever joining back together fully. The story of the war depends a lot on who you ask. Many humans insist that it was the Animae that started attacking them, wanting to become the superior race. The Animae say the opposite: it was the humans, who struck first. Even though it's rare, some people even suspect it was even the demons who caused the war, but most people don't think they'd be capable of that. Nobody actually knows the truth, and most people seem stuck in the belief their version of history is right.

The Rules:
- This one's pretty obvious, but don't be an ass to others. Nobody likes people like that.
- No short, one-sentence posts. Even if it's only dialogue that's happening, you can write a paragraph or two on what they're feeling, thinking, etc.
- Make sure your posts are understandable to others. It's hard to react to something when you don't know what happened.
- No godmodding, mages are powerful, and so are your characters, but they're still just students. They're not gonna one-shot a demon with thousands of years of experience.
- One character per person. Even I only get to play one student (at least as my main character, I may introduce some NPC students).
- To prove you've read the rules, add a name of a fruit to the "Extras" section of the CS. Any fruit will do.
- There's no set posting order, but obviously no double posts, and I'd like it if it wasn't just one or two people posting between themselves, while others stand still. If you haven't posted in a while, and there's some reason for it, just let me know.
- Romances between characters are ok, just keep it PG-13. No horizontal dance on school grounds.
- The characters should all be 18-20. You won't be roleplaying a young prodigy, or a professor. The age for a first-year is usually 19, but I gave a year of wiggle room on both sides.

And that would be pretty much the basic information you need, other than that, here's:

If you have any questions or anything, ask them here or on Discord and I'll do my best to answer. I promise I don't bite (can't promise my character won't, she might be an Animae, but I don't) :D

Tagging you guys in here since you all posted in the Interest Check, but you haven't made a CS, joined the Discord, or even showed up here, y'all still interested?

Hey there! I stumbled upon your thread while browsing through the brainstorm section, and I am actually reading it. Allow me to express that it's rather impressive, and I would like to express my preliminary interest! I'll update it once I finish reading the lore!

I'm still interested, does my character need to have an anime face claim?

Well, it would be best if they did, to fit in with the others, did you want to use a realistic face claim?

Also thank you, @RedFox , I still feel I didn't touch on a lot of stuff I've thought about for this universe, but I did my best to explain the most important things 😄

I was trying to get through those ten pages on my freetime but havent been able to finish it. I'm still interested though.

You're right it would fit in with the other characters, I'll find one that fits.

i'm interested but can't make any promises.

If there are still places I would be interested in signing up. I'm incredibly green so apologies for any dodgy protocol.
