I'd like to try a plot where the characters are part of a special group that have the ability to connect with a dragon. It's like a rite of passage for young boys and girls (15-17ish) in their world to try making the connection. Only a few each year ever manage to connect with one, making it a very rare ability.

This ability has been long dormant in their culture, and a pair of kids/teens rediscover dragon eggs and raise them secretly.
Open to suggestions of variants along these lines, since RPing is a team effort, not just one sided ;)
