PERSONALITY
➨
Fuckboy with Commitment Issues
The man often leaves broken hearts in his wake, for his relationship with girls are flimsy at best. He flirts with them, makes out with them, sometimes he may even have one night stands. But he makes it clear from early on that he only seeks to have fun, drawing a hard line on the sand when things get a little too serious for comfort. Despite what the rumors say about him, Kellen isn't a player, only getting sexually involved with one or two girls at a time. He never does this with the intent to lead anyone on.
➨
Man on a Suicide Mission
Kellen treats his own life with careless disregard. He is a motorcycling, train-jumping, wall-climbing, flirting-with-death kind of guy. Impulsive and addicted to the thrill of danger, Kellen gets himself in a lot of risky and potentially illegal situations. So far, he's still alive. A miracle, to be sure, although not one he's not exactly happy about.
➨
Anti-Authoritarian
A nuisance to his teachers and other authoritarian figures in his life. Growing up, his teachers gave him a hard time in school. It destroyed his self-esteem and made him depressed. This only worsened his attitude against his teachers, who he now harbors a deep resentment for.
Though he may lash out with his words at times, he is typically silently defiant. He refuses to follow orders, living only by the rules he sets for himself.
➨
A Talented Thief
It began when his dad became hard-pressed for money. Kellen started stealing small things—ones that would easily escape people's notice. His crimes then escalated as his confidence grew.
➨
Business-Savvy Smuggler
If you need someone to hook you up with some drugs or alcohol in exchange for some dough, he's your guy. Kellen knows many of the secret passageways in Abernathy Hall, having explored them quite thoroughly the past year.
BIOGRAPHY
For as long as Kellen could remember, he was the problem child. The bad boy. That one kid in school nobody ever thought would amount to anything.
From an early age, he was convinced that this was his destiny. He grew up in an environment that was a stranger to love and laughter, becoming desensitized to his parents' ever-present fury. They were the prime example of a toxic relationship that never resulted into a physical altercation. Though it might as well have. They got pretty close at times.
His only good childhood memory involved the trees, or any high place he could find a solid grip on. He would climb them and watch the world from above; it seemed a far better place than the one that waited in his home.
Kellen also struggled in school. None of his peers liked him. His teachers believed him to be intentionally disruptive. He seemed incapable of sitting still and following instructions; it was out of his control. For the longest time, he believed there was something inherently wrong with him. His
parents had asked him what was wrong with him. And with no other outlet nor support to turn to, he simply embraced his delinquency. If you wear your weakness like armor, no one can hurt you.
As he grew into his teens, his rebelliousness started to charm people more than it did repulse them. Perhaps puberty had a hand in it too; regardless, it was a welcome change. Suddenly, girls wanted to be around him. Everybody wanted to impress the guy that was hardly ever impressed. Soon, he was dating the most popular girl in school, Katie. Even now, her name leaves a sour taste in his mouth.
How exactly did the perfect goody two-shoes fall for the delinquent? It was like something out of one of those romance books. Or a dark fairytale, depending on how you look at it. The
princess was not perfect, after all. She was anything but. Then again, neither was Kellen.
Behind closed doors, they were explosive.
Like his parents, who were now divorcing, Kellen and Katie fought with a fury unmatched. Everything needed to be argued over. There wasn't a day that they didn't find something to be upset about. Yet, they clung to each other like two venomous snakes in heat—yearning, suffocating,
consuming.
Meanwhile, his dad was consumed by debt, one fueled by his increasing dependence on liquor and hookah. His wife had run off with a new man, leaving the shards of her broken family to gather dust. Kellen had never felt more betrayed and forgotten in his entire life, though he showed nothing by way of emotion.
Life was a struggle because of his father's unemployment and debt. It was up to Kellen to take matters into his own hands. Being 15 and reckless, Kellen couldn't hold down a part-time job. When Katie offered him money, he refused. This left him with few options. He took the shortcut.
He began stealing. He started small at first, taking only what was necessary. But overtime, as he grew better, he also grew more bold. Greed got the best of him; and with the extra money in his pockets, he embraced his newfound addiction: weed.
It was around this time that he joined a band as its lead guitarist. There, he met the person who would soon become his best mate, a drummer by the name of Alex. It was he that introduced Kellen and Katie to marijuana, though it wasn't long before they graduated to the harder drugs.
He grew addicted.
ONE MORE LINE AND I'M
SUPERHUMAN
II.
One fateful day—a day Kellen likes to pretend never happened—Katie cheated on him.
For some reason, the idiots had left the door unlocked, and Kellen walked in on his girlfriend blowing his best friend. Both boys came home with a black eye that day, but only one came home with the girl.
He seethed with resentment. Everyone up to this point had failed him in some fashion or other. Everyone had betrayed him. Overcome with heartbreak, he sought refuge in doing what he did best: starting trouble. He hung out with a new crowd that made a sport out of tempting death. They did all sorts of dangerous and illegal things, like jumping out of the way of a moving train, balancing on rooftops and concrete fences, speeding, mailboxing, you-name-it. In school, he was the guy you stayed away from. The guy who wouldn't hesitate to start a fight if you so much as get into his space.
It wasn't long before he was expelled.
Kellen's mom heard about this, and for the first time in months she reached out to him, driven by a maternal instinct that had been dormant for so long.
Come live with Dan and I, she said over the phone,
You can go to a new school. It'll be good for you.
But his father did not like this suggestion. He hurled a beer bottle at the door in his alcohol-induced rage, telling Kellen that he had betrayed him.
I better not see your face again. Those were his parting words.
With nowhere else to go, Kellen moved in with his mom and her new husband, Dan. They had two children, both of which were equally spoiled and mean. They made a point of showing that they didn't like their new step-brother, and Kellen made a point of showing he didn't care. Meanwhile, Dan would always find an opportunity to lecture Kellen, believing the latter to be a bad influence on his children. The boy would always be excluded from family outings and vacations. After all, he was "nothing but a migraine and a recipe for disaster".
This was the straw that broke the camel's back. Fueled by a rage like no other, Kellen threw a party at their mansion while they were away, inviting half the town to do the most decadent deeds. Dan came home to his house trashed and several of the family's most prized possessions missing. Unable to defend her son any longer, Kellen's mother sent him to boarding school as insisted by her husband.
And so Kellen was shipped to Grimsworth School like unwanted garbage. It seemed almost deliberate how it just happened to be the farthest and perhaps most secluded place in existence. They might as well have sent him away to Mars.
Except he didn't last very long. Halfway into the school year, Kellen just stopped showing up to class. Everyone wondered whatever happened to the brooding boy at the back of the classroom. There were rumors aplenty following his disappearance. They said he was dead. Someone said he'd murdered somebody and gotten himself imprisoned. They were all lies, of course.
This year, Kellen is finally returning after a long break.
And he is back with a vengeance.
