Personality:
Kalidan is a very calm and reserved man who often finds himself thinking of philosophical matters, but unfortunately the nature of the land which he resides in has not given his natural ability the time to grow. His peers in the Dark Watch which are among some of the most intimidating individuals in all of Lightwold are often unnerved by his apparent extreme calm. Once when he was on patrol and his company came under attack Kalidan was observed charging into battle stone faced without the slightest hesitation or fear. This instance along with his retrieval and rescue of several other Watchmen from enemy hands has led the men to nickname him the Silent Saint. Kalidan is extremely loyal to his companions in the Dark Watch, and although reserved and quiet would give his life for them. Under some circumstances though his calm demeanor seems to evaporate, one such instance being the beheading of his young wife by the demonic Warlord Agumdoth during the Wars of Aggression. Since then he's had a sleeping disorder that's led him to become unfit for duty, which has been overlooked by his commanding officers and peers due to his past performance as an outstanding Watchmen. Slow to love, and even slower to hate some might say that Kalidan is only a numb ghost of his past self. Whether or not that is true is up for debate though, due to the majority of the people being involved in said past are now deceased.

Biography:
Kalidan Overbane was born on the frontier of Lightwold in the Xalindarian settlement of Cherish, to his father Devian Eldenholm, and mother Aeria Overbane. At an early age Kalidan was subject to the constant strain of poverty and the periodic raiding of Cherish by the Otherlanders. Unfortunately Kalidan's father was killed when he was eleven by an Outlander raider, and his mother succumbed to the rat plagues during the years of oppression. This led to Kalidan watching out for himself up into his teenage years, working as a pick pocket and would be thief in the settlements familiar streets. The life of a thief was not easy though, and the young man was beaten more often than not, barely escaping death on a number of occasions. Eventually at the age of fifteen his fathers friend Eevnry Hardsmith, who happened to be one of the settlements most prestigious blacksmiths took him in, giving the boy a home and the structure he so very much needed.
As Kalidan got older he learned the trade of metal work and often did some of the easier jobs that came into the smithy. Over two years he had grown very close to the blacksmith's daughter Haeli, something that had not gone unnoticed by her parents. One day Eevnry set the boy (who was almost more than than boy at this point) down near the forge and broached a familiar subject. Eevnry wanted to marry his daughter Haeli to Kalidan during the spring solstice in honor of the gods sky God Kalista, and he wanted the boy to take over the forge. Though Kalidan was a bit surprised he had been watching Eevnry and the man had seemingly aged overnight, he had already known that the man would need to stop working at some point. Taking up Eevnry's offer Kalidan spent even more time in the forge making weapons for the various Watchmen in Cherish, and doing other more mundane work like making horseshoes.
This lasted until the Spring Solstice when Haeli and he were wed. The occasion was very joyous and many knew of the boy smith once thief that had grown from humble beginnings. The wedding was simple but many were in attendance, stretching down the street from the town center. The trees and wild grasses were green and abundant in that area during the spring, and the wedding was very beautiful indeed. Happiness was not something that would come easy to the man though, because during the wedding the city was attacked by the Overlanders. A race of beings that the Xalindarian settlers had encountered when first colonizing the lands of Lightwold. They charged killing through the streets of Cherish, and Kalidan's new family along with any chance of happiness was killed that day in the streets of his city. A city which has since become a barren ghost town.
During the fight Kalidan had been knocked unconscious, a man having been killed and landing upon him saved his life. This had come directly after he watched the Overlander's Warlord decapitate his newly found love Haeli. The Overlanders had killed the inhabitants of the entire city, and very few remained. This event would be cemented into the man's psyche for the rest of his life, and prove to be a constant reminder of the fragility of things in existence. Reports had been received from several other settlements near by of the sacking of Cherish, and Company's of the Dark Watch had been sent out to look for survivors. Kalidan was found by the Watch Commander Gavin Hardenbeck, he had been wandering for several days, and had been picked up by the Commander's Company two miles from Cherish near the river Duen. From that moment on Gavin took a liking to the quiet boy, recruiting him into the ranks of his Watchmen.
The young Xalindarian colonist would eventually become skilled at a variety of skills including sword craft, something that took him a few years to pick up. The years he had been on the street had taught the man humility, the years in the forge respect along with patience, and now the Watch would teach him to survive in the wilds, to live off the land, and to protect the peoples of Lightwold from many threats. For five years he served faithfully among the Dark Watch, working as a ranger in the patrols sent outside the cities, due to the constant presence of Overlanders. It was his job to warn any settlement of an incoming attack, and to harass the enemies supply lines should the settlement come under siege. It was during these years that Overbane learned the respect of his fellow Watchmen, and became the Commander of his own Company of Watchmen.
His most prestigious action though would come during his 26th year, when the Light Wyrrm Osumlisk would attack the city which his company had been tasked with guarding. It was his action and leadership during this event that would eventually lead to the defeat of the Wyrrm, and the successful safe guard of the city Midfjord. During one of the creatures many pass byes spewing electric death forth from it's gaping maw, Kalidan had gained it's attention with a gleaming jewel, the Wyrrm landed on the ground engaging the Watchmen directly. Fortunately Kalidan had the assistance of his Company, and they succeeded in bringing the town's Cathedral spire down upon the Wyrrm, trapping part of it's body beneath the rubble. This move led to the creature being unable to engage the Watchmen effectively with Kalidan bearing down on the creature and striking the killing blow. Of course the original story was changed and mutated as it moved from settlement to settlement, and the story now stars Kalidan as a seven foot beast of a man, killing the Wyrrm single handedly.
Kalidan currently resides in Midfjord and oversees the training of Watchmen recruits.

Appearance:
Kalidan is a relatively short man only rising to the stature of five feet and eight inches. Though due to his height and occupation the man has become rather muscular and stout. Living in the often dark and foreboding land of Lightwold Kalidan has a pale shade to his skin, which is covered with any number of scars gained through combat. Though his worst scars are carried inside his own mind, this often not showing on the features of his face. The man maintains what can be seen as a very calm demeanor, and individuals witnessing anything less are very rare. This level of calmness has led to his Watchmen coming up with stories about his missing soul. What people don't realize though is that beneath the calm facade was a morass of broiling emotion and fear. The death of his late wife and both his real and adopted family has injured the man on a very deep and profound level. Kalidan keeps his head and face shaved, a token of his involvement in the Dark Watch, and their regulations.
The man is almost never seen without his Watchmen's cloak and leather armor, and sword is always strapped to his hip. Around his neck he wears a claw broach made from a Wyrrm's claw, and often the object of attention when he is visiting other settlements. Kalidan dresses in darker and heavier fabrics then the majority of the population, and individuals that do not know him often find his attire and demeanor to be queer.
