Chrono Asylum: Prelude to Madness

If the residents of Sumerlin South had seen those two young men walking into the desert, they would have thought they were insane, criminals or perhaps part of the secret UFO research services. Rather than put the "borrowed" car to further use and cover more ground as quickly as possible, the Russian team set out on foot, leaving the vehicle behind, however, without including the keys, in order to prevent actual theft taking place. Neither of them had any intention to make haste, albeit their reasons differed.

Cadmus, who remained solemn and constantly vigilant, had a steady gate resembling that of a heartless businessman. Indeed, he wished to complete the order given, yet that in no manner compelled him to run until his final breath was drawn. Instead, with a calm and collected straightened composure the wavy-dark-haired adult scanned the surroundings carefully and took mental notes about the terrain and possible utilization of everything it had to offer. Albeit it was the midst of night, the colourful lights of Vegas had conquered darkness's domain. The sky was a dark dull grey, rather than the midnight blue one would see even in small towns, with very few stars twinkling dimly above. Like the beacon of salvation atop a lighthouse by the graveyard shores of a rocky bay, the Luxor Sky Beam was shining brightly upwards, as though it was a bridge between this world and the next. Around it many other beams would cut the lifeless atmosphere, going left or right, creating intricate patterns, attracting victims to the casinos or discos they belonged to. This colourful pollution of the welkin touched neither of the two asylums, not with its glory, nor with its flaws, yet Rio could not help himself from creeping his gaze back towards the city he had come to fancy.

Traveling with his partner could offer so little entertainment and it was not an everyday occasion to be sent out in an area where the party was alive around the clock, thus the blond wished to savor every minute he had consuming this sinful vitality in every way possible. Yet this apparent nonchalant demeanor towards the task at hand was not the only reason why the youth was longingly turning his sigh towards the polis. Adjusting his glasses several times, Rio was surveying the vicinity, keeping an eye out for any unwanted guests. The device hidden within the turquoise frame was what gave purpose to this pseudo-intellectual piece of headgear and, albeit it did not have peculiar extras such as heat detection, x-ray scanning and the like, nor could it access P.A.N.T.E.R., A.M.R.O.'s personal network, outside of the main headquarters, it was certainly a great number of times better than anything any surfaceworld blackboard had to offer. If any ignorant lost lamb were to wander close by or a wanna-be predator came to try its luck, they would not remain unnoticed.

'Seem like we'll be having quite the rave, a, Caddy?' Rio smirked telepathically as they walked.
'As if you had not noticed already by the sheer feel of it.' Cadmus retorted.
'Hey, I'm not a vibe expert, though I have been sensing a strong presence ever since we arrived in Vegas.'
'May our superior be of the benevolent kind.'
'You seriously need to fix that dictionary of yours.'

Despite being aware of their approaching colleagues by their alchemic essence, the duo did not attempt to rush and sniff about for the game's "birdie" just yet, for there was no need to. Why waste valuable energy when someone could pave the path before you? Quietly stalking forward, they headed southwest, where almost all the hills vanished the small prickly shrubs could grow in abundance. They had the desire to excel at their task, but not even Rio was young enough to be this ignorant. Both he and Cadmus had gone through unpleasant experiences, which had taught them that just because you were first at accomplishing something didn't guarantee that a blessing would fall upon you. The sudden game initiation had made this note flash through their minds more than once, which was why both alchemists had agreed on one rule. Don't lose, but don't overwhelmingly win either.

'Hey, Cad.' Rio suddenly broke the silence that had settled in telepathically. 'Remember that time we had that one day vacation and I agreed to go to that seaside park in Odessa?'
'Yes. It was a pleasant walk. Why did you bring it up?'

'Remember how we walked in that park and didn't even talk to each other even in our minds, right? We just... walked. And then remember what I said?'
'... No, a bomb is not going to fall on your head, Rio.' Cadmus replied, unamused by his friend who had evidently given freedom to his imagination.
'Last time you said that a bomb almost fell on my head.' the youngster reminded him with a smile. A hilarious memory in his records, it was one of those rare occasions after they had gotten through the newcomer stage where they had actually never imagined something coming their way.
'Concentrate on your work and you won't be bothered by such thoughts.' the green-grey-eyed man brushed him off.
"Hey, listen! You can't deny I was right." Rio spoke up and added a laugh with the following "Not only because it's obvious, but because you did that silence sigil on yourself again!"
'You are being preposterous, Rio.' his companion remained untouched by the remark. Indeed, even if he tried to speak, his voice would not be heard, for while he had still been in the car he had again written down the silencing sigil on himself just when they knew they would be leaving the vehicle behind. Currently, his only method of easily comprehensible communication was telepathy.
"Here we are, walking around like we own the place, not a single thing in sight." the blond continued with a smile. "There's a thing called intuition and it's supposed to be ringing a bell."
'What is supposed to be ringing a bell is the fact that we still do not know where the target is.'
"Slyshai, if I'm right about something big happening, you're coming along to XS, unless I find myself someone else."
'Rio.'
"Deal or no deal?" he grinned
'...Deal.' Cadmus let out an inaudible sigh. 'In the end, no bomb will fall on your-'

Unfortunately, the young man's thought was cut short as an unknown presence made itself known. A long distance away from them, the two asylums could faintly feel the orb of energy fluttering somewhere high above the ground, but that was not what had captured their attention. Out of the blue, a form of pressure had come upon them, a characteristic which indicated that a Chrono member was nearby, and it was getting stronger, as if literally raining down on them. Albeit the evening was still in the middle of its restless life, the men could see with their plain eyes how a dark figure descended from above with an incredible speed. While Rio cloud only manage to grown the smile on his face in that short period of time before impact, Cadmus grabbed Anteros, the red umbrella of his coworker which had been strapped to the blue-eyed's back, took it out and opened it. A cloud of dust erupted from the point where the being touched the earth. Spreading faster than wildfire on a dry windy hot summer day, the density of the particles and the enormous size of it halted both movement and sight. Millions of stones and pebbles were thrown into the air and bombarded the scorched sandy ground. When the desert element reached the Russians a few seconds after impact, they had crouched down and directed the umbrella towards it, effectively shielding themselves.

'9 PM in front of the hotel.' Rio announced in triumph in their thoughts, whilst the cloud was still passing.
'... We'll see who'll make it out of there whole.' was Cadmus's only comeback and those words gave the blond a nervous pinch.
'The usual then?'
'Yah, go ahead'

Once the cloud of dust passed, only Rio could be seen standing under the red umbrella, which he then folded and held in his hand. The plan was rather simple, it had repeated many times. There was nothing to be used from the surroundings on short notice. The terrain was relatively flat, not a single big obstacle to be used, thus the cliché act would commence. One would be the magician, the other - working behind the scenes. If whoever had caused this commotion was deemed a hindrance, they would be dealt with accordingly, and if it was, as they anticipated, a comrade of increadible power, perhaps the Chrono themselves, another course of action would be taken.

"~O, dear child, dear family of mine, do not allow my feet to fail me. Give me haste to reach my beloved~." Rio whispered the Vocum cast, which swiftly pushed him onwards. It was a speed spell, one he could not keep up for long, yet it wouldn't be required in this case either.
After several seconds, the unknown figure came into view - a lovely little girl with blonde hair tied up in two twintails. Her cuteness was noticeable even from afar, but it wasn't the single thing that made the man halt in his tracks. A car was heading her way, a rather dirty vehicle from all the sand and filth of the area. A confusing situation, no doubt, however, Rio dismissed the assumption that the car was going to run over the child or whoever was inside was about to kidnap her. If this little Ms. had that kind of presence, she could undoubtedly crush them to smithereens. In fact, it seemed to be slowing down, rather than speeding up - a sign that someone inside either had a change of heart or the thought of this not being the best option for their health crossed their mind.

'Don't lose it.' Cadmus spoke in their telepathic channel. The distance between him and the Prodigy was slightly greater, but the space between the two teammates had also greatly increased. 'She may be young, but she is a Chrono. If anything, we should be careful with every breath we take. Slipping something is not an option.'
'Who's playing first. What's second. I don't know about third, though.~'
Rio said, yet this time it was not on their private channel, but on the one everyone else present could hear.
'... Just how dead do you want us to be?' Cadmus rhetorically asked in their private channel.
'Hey, no point in hiding when there's nowhere to hide, right?' the blond replied, still on the open channel, whilst lightly swinging the umbrella with his right hand. 'Do as your muse sings and my muse says we should get the party started.'

"Are you certain that will work?" Al responded with impatience seeping into his voice after Keith described his plans to him. "I think there are a few too many holes in your plans and for what it's worth the time it would take to set things up is way too long. We should just head out there and react to whatever is thrown in our way. You're good at thinking up of plans on the spot, if we need to find a way to get that orb you can figure it out then."

"That's stupid. As long as we work together it will hinder the others which will give us the chance to get the orb. Trust me." Keith said as he called Poe towards them. "Just make sure you have your cast ready when the..." Pausing, Keith held up his hand and motioned Al to be quiet. "Did you hear that?"

"Get that damn bird out of our way and into the air to see what it is. I can take care of whoever it is." Al said as he rushed towards the sound, his hand already grasping for his weapon in case it was needed.

"You idiot!" Keith sighed in frustration as he ran after his partner as Poe soared ahead of them as they ran towards the sound of someone running.

"So that bird is yours? Lucky I didn't ask my partner to snipe it down." Seira said as she laughed gaily. Her chain now wrapped round her wrist. Twiddling her fingers slightly, she created just enough motem energy to make the silvery slither down her hand. The dart rested gently in her hand while the longer end pooled at her feet. "Mr. Capone! I hope you like to play."

She tossed the dart up in the air and drew her arms into a recognizable Shaolin stance. As she jabbed her hand forward swiftly, the dart flew forward. It sped up until it became a silvery blur. The force created when it landed on the ground showered her opponents with bits of concrete. She winked at Al, as she fished the dart back teasingly, taking care to show a little too much of her leg for Al to see. Her eyes were trained in Keith's direction. "You know, you are actually quiet handsome. What with your intelligent eyes and all. Who are you?"

A caw was heard from Poe moments after the dart left Seria's hand, giving just enough time for Al to dart out of the way. Al was prepared for her second attack and not wasting any time, he pulled out the parts that made up Death's Kiss and while dodging the attack, extended the weapon out but made sure to keep the spikes retracted. Returning the wink Seria gave with a scowl, he readied himself to attack.

"Wouldn't you like to know?" Keith responded to Seira's question in a jesting tone. "Beat us and I might just tell you."

"Cheeky aren't you?" She responded brightly. "I don't see any harm is sparring. When I delay you and your partner, you'll both lose when someone gets the orb."

"Well we'll see about that." Keith said with full confidence in Al knowing far to well that his partner was set on getting to orb and wouldn't waste to much time with the teen, or al least he hoped so. "You should make some sort of tool tangle up her weapon." Keith said telepathically to Al as he surveyed the scene for teenager's partner, knowing that most teams were usually together. "They seem to be close to you age Jumbo, do you know who they are or who her partner is?"

"Yes mother." Al retorted but took his partner's advice and grab is necklace. Punching his fist out towards the side, three times to use his alchemy, he formed a four-pronged tool that he held in his fist. Two prongs jutting out on either side of his fist and was positioned lower compared to the other two prongs which came out between his pointer and middle finger as well as between his ring and pinky. Although Sandula was being stretched out thin making this five or so inch long tool, he knew that it should hold up. "Yes, I think so. I probably would recognize her partner if I saw them but I can't remember who she was teamed up with."

Skipping any formalities, Al charged towards the teen and once he was close enough, aimed a swing towards her as he held Sandula in the ready position in case she tried to use it again.

Siera jumped out of the way. She remained poised with her hands planted firmly on the ground and her legs in the air. Her skirt slid up even more to reveal her stripped stockings. She tsked. "My impatient, aren't you? I love it when a guy is so hot-tempered."

Kicking forward, her feet landed on Al's head. She sat on his shoulders and wave at Keith. Her joy ride didn't last long. She could feel Al bucking under her so she pressed down on his head. Siera looked just like a Chinese acrobat with her body support with a mere hand supported by his head. She pushed down.

"Release!" She yelled as a shockwave erupted from the palm of her hand. The force was enough to propel her off Al's head and back onto terra firma. AWoL dragged along the ground leaving a trail of white and yellow sparks along the street. She cocked her head curiously while waiting for Al's retaliation. This really wasn't that much tougher than the standard sparring back at Innocence.

"What the hell do you think you are doing Ophelia." Al said furrowing his brows at the way his opponent was conducting herself. Her chirpy attitude and the way she treated the situation as a game wasn't something Al was fond of. "Grow up, we're not kid at Innocence anymore." Al said as took another lunge at the teen, this time bringing the prongs closer together so that after attacking with D.K. he could follow it with a jab with Sandula. It was a bit risky especially if she used her weapon with him now unguarded against it but if he was quick enough he thought it might just work.

"O - you must have remembered the wrong person?" Siera retorted not quite catching herself fast enough. She noticed him coming at her even before she finished speaking. A more guarded smile replaced the wide-lipped grin from earlier. Reaching behind, she pulled the ribbon away slowly, as if she was trying to flirt with the incoming teen. Then at the very last second possible she melted into their merged shadows leaving her ribbon fluttering down towards the ground. As he staggered pass, her pale white hands reached out from underneath and grabbed him. XCI pulled hard before re-emerging from the pooling darkness underneath them. Her raven hair flared out then fell gracefully behind her back. A cold glint shone in her eyes. "You were saying - something about a game?" It had been a very long time since anyone challenged her to an all out duel. This promised to be fun. If they didn't run first.

Malord startled a bit as the Jeep Wrangler shifted on its loose suspension to accommodate the shifting weight. He pulled the binoculars away from his face to glance at his partner as she adjusted her coat in the passenger seat.

"Savages," she reported, turning around to grab her weapons from the back seats and carefully holster them.

"Malady," he acknowledged her, glancing back out along the expansive wasteland. There wasn't as much activity as he may have expected given that there were so many teams involved in the game, but perhaps that was a good thing. Maybe they were tiring themselves out before ever getting out of the city.

Finally with all her things in order, Malady pressed a button on the dash and then panned around the map that splashed upon the HUD projected in front of the windshield. The windows darkened almost imperceptibly to ensure privacy from anyone trying to peek into their mobile command center. "What are we looking at?" She glared at the few dots with time signatures next to them, indicating what life forms Malord had managed to scan with the goggles, and when.

"Haven't seen a lot of them, I think they're probably still in the city; probably caught each other and decided to start things there. The Chrono's on the point."

"Looking to make things more interesting."

"Likely." The map updated as their sensors picked up another display of alchemic energy just within the outskirts of the city.

"Well, no point dallying; remember, second, not last."

"Yes ma'am." Malord shifted into first, and after shortly spinning out the tires with a grin on his face, eased off a bit to let the car lurch into motion.

As they neared the point, some chatter began on the open channel, and Malord glanced over at her quizzically before responding. "Great, I love parties." He sent a winning smile along with the message, and pulled the vehicle to a stop a few dozen yards from the chrono before flicking on the headlights, and then the highbeams.

Malady stepped out, quickly closing the door behind her and sliding along the vehicle's bonnet until she sat right in the midst of the flood of light. "Good morning, Chrono."

"How did you find me?" A voice echoed atop the Excalibur Hotel, an ironic place given the circumstance that was brewing.

"Don't jest clown, 'A.M.R.O's Lizard can only be found when he wants to be'." Angel retorted casually as he stepped onto a ledge, his gaze fixated towards the outskirts. "You are quite the nuisance you know?" The Crimson Asylum reiterated, a hint of a displeasure in his tone.

"So you have said countless times, there is a problem," as the Lizard's voice echoed, the realm of the unseen begun to sway. Next to the reaper reality had begun to wain and crack and from within it a familiar cloaked figure manifested.

"I am well aware, I am assuming only the privileged are aware of this infestation?" An arrogant smirk spread across XIII's face as he faced the notorious Lost Number in front of him.

"They are divided in their opinion on the root of this infestation. It is a little too convenient." The Lizard spoke, his tone foreboding catastrophe.

"Exciting isn't it? Those Asylums have no idea what fate awaits them." The Reaper mused, his fingers dancing a rhythm familiar to a puppeteer.

"I would tell you to be careful but you have already begun tugging at the strings haven't you? Adieu." With that silence once more became XIII's sole companion.

---------------Xx---------xX-----------

"One......two......three....four...." The little child slowly counted, with each number her fingers closing to form a fist. "I am bored, bored, bored. I know where everyone is, but no one is where I want them to be." The Chrono vented, childishly stomping her foot stirring the sand storm around her.

"Good morning, Chrono."

"Oh?" The little princess twirled anxiously. "One team made it, hooray!" She exclaimed, clapping innocently. "But daddy said I can only play if all of you are here..so...." she continued while twiddling her fingers apologetically.

"All....who choose to cower in the dust," as soon as the first verse was sung, the alchemic pressure within the vicinity of the Asylums had begun to fluctuate, raining down on them. The Chrono herself appeared different; her expressions stoic, her tone mechanic and presence, soulless.

"Fall and kneel for reckoning has come," with the verse completed, one by one the Asylums appeared to fall around her. Plucked from their surroundings, they were brought where deemed necessary, a form of advanced teleportation.

It is widely understood, basic teleportation is a skill in which every Asylum must show a level of prowess. However teleportation is of three kinds. Self teleportation, push teleportation and pull teleportation, with the latter being the most tricky. Unlike self teleportation, push/pull teleportation is the art of teleporting external matter, be it away from you or towards you.

"Sheer insolence, making your betters wait," the prodigy admonished the Asylums around her, an arrogance akin to Ante Mortem.

"The surface is no place for worms," the child continued in a frightful monotone. "Their place is beneath the sole of my boot," her words had sent the environment around her in frenzy, sand and dust begun to cling to the Asylums, the wind sending them in disarray.

Seeing that Al and Seira was preoccupied with each other and Poe was unable to find the young Asylum's partner nearby, Keith quickly made his way to the barrier. If he and Al were to get to the orb, he needed to devise a plan to get past, and quick. "That tiger would have been really useful right about now." Keith huffed to himself as he looked around to see if there was something that could be of use. He already had a plan forming, one he knew Al would be upset about, but if it worked out things would be looking good for them. He'd leave Al out of the loop for now. The kid would be too distracted trying to argue with him instead of focusing on the fight.

Seira spun round to give Al a kick to the head. Again her attack was blocked. She whistled. "You recover fast." She dropped her hands to the ground and attempted to wrap her ankles round his throat. The change of perspective proved to be a mistake. Out of the corner of her eyes, XCI saw the older Asylum standing at the very edge of her barrier. Damn! Her concentration was a little stretched at the moment. "Hey! Get away from the barrier. Ooooops!" Seira found herself lying flat on her back.

"You haven't seen anything yet." Al said, momentarily glancing towards Keith. He knew the look on the man's face far too well. He was planning something and seeing that Keith hasn't mentioned something yet, Al had a feeling that he was the bait. That was no problem for him.

"Sorry but no can do kiddo." Keith said as he turned his attention back to the barrier, now that he had the exact words he wanted to use to break down the barrier. But before he could get too far into his incantations, a familiar sensation enveloped his body. "Take down the barrier, now!" Keith yelled towards Siera with a tone of urgency before calling Poe towards him.

"What?" Siera panicked as she felt someone teleporting them. She struggled against it and literally grabbed Al. "I can't! I can't!" Light glimmered slightly as the surface of the barrier rippled but it remained there. She heard a consistent thudding as someone hit against the barrier. Siera felt herself being flung towards the invisible wall she created. Based on the speed at which they were hurtling she knew Al and her were going to be hurt badly. "I - BREAK!" She yelled in desperation. The barrier shattered like a bubble and all three Asylums were dragged towards point zero.

A wave of panic crossed Al as they started to move towards the barrier. Knowing that Keith would reach the barrier first, he was a bit concerned on how he was doing knowing far too well it could be anywhere from being pissed off to being seriously injured.

"What the hell is your problem?" Keith yelled towards Siera as he reached towards his face, blood seeping between his fingers as he muttered an incantation to fix his nose.

Al gave a slight shrug towards the young Chrono, offering a silent apology for his partner's outburst. At least anger meant that Keith wasn't seriously injured. "You do know recompense is required for your actions right?" Al said telepathically to Seira, using the situation to his advantage. "I doubt he'll be very forgiving." He continued before speaking to Keith telepathically. "How does blackmail sound to you?"

"Go for it, she could help us out. I'm surprised though, I thought you would be against getting help from others. Your cooperation with others is showing that you've grown."

"Nah, I just want to win. This isn't teamwork."

"W-wait! What?" Seira yelled instinctively as she picked herself up from the sand ground. She brushed the dust off her skirt and stared at Al and Keith with her arms crossed. "We had a friendly match. It was interrupted. So this can't be my fault. I DID NOT TELE -" She paused and reconsidered. Wait! They just offered her a chance to partner up. That means lesser chances of losing. Though this sounded like blackmail and there was no way she'd let herself get conned like that. She thought really hard. Was there any chance she could get the terms to be much more favorable? Siera swapped to a more discreet form of communication - telepathy. "I am not going to agree with such terms, you know? I am actually a medic and thus a more valuable ally. Why don't we enter this partnership on more equal terms?" She offered her hand out and waited for them to respond.

"Do you have any plans on how to win?" Al said offering his hand out, cutting out any needless small talk and getting straight to the point as he normally was towards others besides Keith. "She's on board."

"Perfect." Keith said before including Siera in the telepathic conversation. "You can call me Sheriff seeing that we never finished our little battle. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to learn my name later on. Who's your partner? We should probably get them involved in our plans."

Siera grabbed his hand and shook it tightly. "I think since we are here. Cams should be here too. Let's look regroup?" Her eyes did flick warily towards the Chrono. Okay, there might not be time to come up with a solid plan. The young girl looked like she was raring to fight. "You - what do you suggest we do? I don't think diving nose first for the girl is a great idea."

"I've got an idea." Keith said with a slight smirk

"Who are you?" Came the confused reply. Cams sighed as he failed to block the other person. He had no clue who this man was, nor did he feel comfortable accepting the offer to partner up. He preferred a deal being made on his own terms. "I don't know if I can trust you." The boy continued staring out into the vast desert spread out before him. Everything was far too still. Not a single person in sight. The only living people closest to him was his partner and the team she was challenging. Judging from the absence of the usual whining in his head, his partner was probably handling herself well.

His mind began analyzing offer that he seemed to have rejected. Mildly. He knew deep down that he and Seira had a very low chance of winning against more experienced Asylums. That offer was actually quite tempting on hindsight. Still he won't feel happy about it until he has the chance to negotiate the terms. "Give me several reasons why I should trust you. You haven't identified yourself and you are asking me to trust you blindly. Two things that are bound to spook any Asylum. You, being more experienced, should know that." He added the rebuke at the end hoping to get a reaction from his so-called communication partner. Any reaction would be a huge advantage.

Acting friendly or coy (like what Seira did) was never appreciated under any circumstances. Out here it was always a life or death situation. Things could change in a heartbeat. "And what makes you so sure we can take on the Chrono together? Unless you have a particular absurdly powerful Alch-Specs." Again he sounded way too defensive. He couldn't help it. The whole being communicated like that without any prior warning was just setting off alarm bells in his head. He clutched his violin case closer to himself as he felt a weird sort of energy gathering round. Cams felt his hair stand. He sighed and braced himself for the inevitable. This being a very difficult form of teleportation meant that the Chrono was waiting. "Tell you what, we'll talk once we have gathered -- assuming you are being pulled as well -- because the Chrono seems impatient."

Bits gasped as the sense of alchemy around her suddenly coalesced into a teleportation cast. She had just enough time to grab several bottles of water from near her feet before she landed on her behind in the sand. Around her, the other Asylums appeared as well, including Sparks right at her side. She barely had time to recover before the Chrono whipped the wind around them into a frenzy, obscuring everything -- and getting sand into everything as well. The woman grimaced behind blue hair that suddenly was completely in her face, dropping the bottles she held at her feet and throwing up one hand instinctively with a gesture to summon a shield around herself and her brother. Immediately the wind and grit around the pair died down, the force effect of the shield countering a great deal of the gale, though there still was a strong breeze.

Bits pulled her hair out of her face into the hairband on her wrist. "Goal," she said quietly. That was all Sparks needed to hear. She was going to try for the birdy, which made sense with all the other Asylums present. Certainly there'd be at least some distraction, especially if he worked to help with that. Still, this was a Chrono they were facing. "Just a minute," he replied. I always forget how paranoid most Asylums are, he sent to Cam, sounding resigned, as he rubbed a hand over his face. He didn't add that many of them seemed to have sticks up their behinds, but at least this other guy hadn't shown any signs of /that/ yet. I'm Sparks Quinn, the guy you helped out back at the casino, and my partner is my sister Bits. I owe you one, which is part of why I wanna team up. As for trusting us.... Sparks wracked his brain for a good reason. Well, uh, you can count on us to want to win just as much as you do, he continued. And that means getting the Chrono out of the way, or at least distracting her. I won't make any promises not to go for the birdy -- you wouldn't believe me if I did, and rightly so -- but I /will/ guarantee that neither of us will try to remove you or your partner from the competition until the Chrono is handled. That should be decent, at least. And don't forget, the goal's the birdy, not the Chrono's defeat. We don't have to beat her, just distract her enough to get by. My sister and I, we see fighting outright a waste of time in this game. While you're fighting with one team, another will reach the goal, and that's just silly. The Chrono's presence changes things significantly, though. I'm not sure at all we can take her. In fact, it probably will take all of us to even faze her, a course of action I have no problem taking. But before I approach any other teams, I thought I'd ask you. If you wanna make a counter proposal, I'm listening.

Cams spotted his partner close by with the other team. He frowned not quite sure what to make of the handshake just now. He bit his lip and thought carefully. This was going to be tricky, but he was more than willing to play this game. "I don't care about winning. Not as much as my partner. Let's take out the Chrono first, but your sister should wait. I wouldn't go for the birdie until we have her cornered." He kneeled down and began drawing something in the sand. "Do me a favour and engage her in battle. I have a plan."

While still communicating his thoughts to Bits and Sparks, the boy tried to reach his partner. He gave her a mental nudge until she replied. "What's your plan?" He demanded to know. Siera was not replying yet. He sighed. He would just have to wait.

You really think three or four of us can take her? Sparks asked, sounding doubtful. I was really hoping to avoid direct confrontation as much as possible. Attacking her seems more like a matter of serving as bait and just dodging like crazy. Still, the man looked at his sister, and shook his head. "Wait," he told her, just loud enough to reach her at his side and no further. "Cameron is not very trusting, and we do need to work with him after the contest is over. Team dynamics are more important here than winning. Worst outcome is we place last, and it certainly wouldn't be the first time."

Bits frowned, but she acquiesced, albeit with visible reluctance. "Gear," she said, pulling up her hood and drawing two fingers along it to turn it into goggles and a mask. Beside her, Sparks did the same, though his alchemy was accomplished with a murmured phrase. "Together," she added, twisting the tops off her bottles and soaking her clothing. She'd be chilly, but it'd keep the water where she needed it. "I'll strike first," he said, pulling a lump of grayish clay from his pocket and scratching lines in it with a fingernail. He paused at the last line, looking to Bits. "Go," she said, dropping the shield around them and moving forward. Sparks finished his cast, summoning a bolt of lightning to strike from above at where the Prodigy stood. Even if it didn't hit, it would be deafening, and create a push of wind outward from where it struck.

The Chrono calmly observed her foes, her nonchalant demeanor a testament to her confidence, spiting the efforts of these Asylums. The title of prodigy is not a mere word but a crown bestowed upon the few that have proven worthy of it.

Alchemy is governed by two principals, alchemic potential and alchemic execution. Alchemic potential is the capacity of an Alchemist's understanding of the intricacies of the art, hence possessing the capacity to control its vastness. Alchemic execution is the degree to which an Alchemist can truly utilize the potential. This brings us to the concept of alchemic conundrum, a problem faced by nearly every Alchemist. It is the disequilibrium that occurs between alchemic potential and alchemic execution. Prodigy is a title bestowed on those select few who posses an inherent ability, a natural equilibrium between the two forces.

"Analyzing potential...." The Chrono murmured as her foot dragged about in the sand, her senses comprehending and quantifying the talent around her while the Asylums prepared themselves. In all truth, Ante Mortem had little to no interest in engaging fodder, however the situation had changed and deadweight would prove a liability.

"Analysis complete......
Objective acquired....
Conclusion......reasonable."

The Chrono concluded, her head gently tilting up to observe a spark and in mere seconds the child was engulfed in lightning. Sand and dust eclipsed the sky as thunderous shockwaves emanated from ground zero, leaving a mass of charred earth.

As the rubble and dust slowly subsided, in between the charred ground, the Chrono remained standing. Not a scratch on the child and apparently the only effort she exuded was a miniscule movement of her left foot which ignited the sigil she had prepared in the sand. From this it was easy to assume the prodigy had shielded herself utilizing alchemy to block the alchemic assault.

"Drown in your casket of sand."

Rin whispered, her eyes callously observing as the ground beneath the Asylums would obey and devour them. Her alchemy restructuring the properties of the ground on which they stood, turning it into a quicksand like substance, slowly pulling them in.

"Or breathe the fumes of hell."

Her second verse magnified the threat, if the Asylums did manage to timely escape their assorted graves they would still be trapped inside a circle of flames which would rapidly drain the oxygen while emit a sickening cloud of smoke.

"Else bathe in a shower of shard."

With the final verse spoken, the sand being burned would instantly transmute to glass and hail on those trapped within. Thousands of shards fell down mercilessly on those either trapped within the sand or disoriented by the fumes.

"The task is completed." Rin telepathically conveyed this message as she casually sat down on a throne that had risen from the ground.

"Well done child. Now we shall see if these Asylums truly posses the instinct to survive. For if they fall now it is better than to face that which is to come." Angel replied back, the coffin wielding Asylum observing the chaos from miles away via clairvoyance.

"The probability of intrusion is at 38 percent. The probability of us being held accountable.....75 percent. The silencing procedure will start very soon if your plan succeeds....father." Rin spoke mechanically, her mind calculating thousands of numbers and regardless of data, the conclusion was the same.

If the true objective would reach completion, it would spell the beginning of a disaster on a gargantuan scale.

Cameron, upon realizing that he was being sucked into the ground, he erected a barrier round himself. He wasn't an expert like Siera was in this field, but she managed to teach him enough to keep himself out of harm's way. It was an imperfect shield – a cocoon really – that embraced his body like a sleeping bag. That made the shards a real worry. The fumes were another conundrum for him to tackle later. The smaller ones broke upon contact with his body, but bigger ones were eating into his flesh. FLESH!

The teen slit his finger open upon a particularly wicked looking shard then smeared the blood across the small gap closest to his heart. His blue eyes closed as he focused on The Thing from the Fantastic Four. He bit back several foul words, as pain lanced his body. The blood sigil glowed as a thick gray-brown plate formed round his chest. The process was slower than anticipated, but the closing plates shattered the glass pressing against his body.

Finally, when he was finally rock man, Cameron let out a roar as he smashed about. Tickling bits, stone, gravel and sand flew everywhere as he tunneled away from his current tomb. Tunneling away guarantees that he may find a safer spot to breach the surface, hopefully one where the air wasn't poisoned. He punched through the sand rapidly as he locked onto the first alchemic signature he detected.

"Do I have to?" Cams whined mentally. Reaching out was not his favourite thing, because that meant opening up to someone he couldn't trust, but right now, he was putting a fellow ally – or maybe his partner even – in peril. The collapsing glass stalactites might severe several arteries and the person would bleed to death. He closed his eyes and locked onto the Alchemist ahead.

"Hey! I'm about to tunnel through. Can you protect yourself against the falling glass?" As that was happening, he could feel Siera struggling with something, and by the sound of it, she wasn't the one in front of him. Great! Now he had to worry about this other person. He sent an image of an airbag inflating and shattering the glass. "Try that," he commanded telepathically. "A barrier that explodes outwards which begins closest to your skin. Shatter the glass and keep within that bubble. I'll think of something when I get to you."

He opened his mind to his partner's thoughts. Rapidly, he assessed her current plan, then modified it subtle. The tiny change would also ensure that she was following in his footsteps, well kinda. Her alch-specs gave her an advantage her probably didn't have when it came to aiding the rest. Somewhere further away, Siera remained seated cross-legged within an opague bubble. Her initially orb barrier wasn't strong enough to withstand the abuse from the shards, so she was forced to strengthen it by adding several onion-like layers over the surface. She didn't want to risk adding those layers inside, because she'd be eating up the precious air. Her thoughts slowly colesced to form an actual - and unexpectedly doable - plan.

"Cameron?" She thought.

"You're very welcome."

"Stop being such a jerk for once!" She screeched at her smug Sniffer friend. He really had some nerve to laugh at her, when she tried oh so hard to get out of this mess. Siera held back. He did help, she admitted to herself grudgingly. "Yeah, I sense faint signatures in the ground. The nearest one is to my 10 o'clock. I don't remember who was closest to me."

"You can try absorbing them into your barrier as you run pass," Cams suggested.

"That's provided they have enough brains to erect one in the first place," she grumbled. "I don't have time to teach them."

"Then I won't have time to teach you next time," he retorted.

"Fine – wait! WHAT! Are you suggesting that you have some allies you wanted to save?" Siera's yells rattled Cam's mind. In return, she received a telepathic kick in response and winced. "Fine, because I actually have some too."

"Oh whoopee! A party of six."

"Yeah. Whoopee. Don't kill my allies!" She admonished.

Siera took a deep breath. A looping incantation would do the trick. After a few times repeating the same verse, she'd be able to continue uttering it, while locking down on the Asylums closest to her. She hummed the Seven Dwarves' digging song. Before she remembered a verse from a poem she read recently.

The race begins,
as engines roar.
They charge ahead,
like a wild boar.

She repeated the verse several times as she felt energy coursing through her body. Her toes wiggled rapidly, and as she finished the last line, she zipped off. Her bubble tumbled along like a gigantic hamster ball. Combined with her current speed and the hardiness of the protective layers, she found herself borrowing at record speed, just like what Cameron predicted. As she neared her first "passenger", she reached out to the stranded Asylum.

"Hey sweetheart," she teased. "I'm trying to pick you up."

Hearing a snarky response, she rolled her eyes. "I meant absorb you into my barrier, not the other kind of pickup! Geez sense of urgency, please." She shushed the other person. "Create a barrier around yourself. Yes, I'm ordering you around. Create a barrier so it's easier for me and less painful for you." She sighed. "YES, pickup. I won't be so cheesy if I was flirting with you."

Vegas outskirts: battlefield

As the ground started sinking beneath them, Sparks got his clay smoothed and pressed another sigil into it. The sand beneath their sunken feet solidified, becoming a broad, thin rock that would support them, distributing their weight over the sand that lay farther down. However, they still had a foot of sand to struggle through atop it, and getting free would not be easy. Did you see that?! he demanded of both Cam and Bits, despite the latter's dislike for telepathic communication. She just negated the whole thing! I have a feeling she'll be able to counter most alchemy we throw at her.

Use the environment against her, or...weapons. Bits reluctantly used her telepathy in return, though she did address Cam in addition to her partner. Even her mental "voice" was quiet, and there was a distinct pause preceding the last word. Not wanting to be immobilized, she dug one leg free, then the other. But now there were sickening fumes billowing around them. Breathing more heavily from her exertion, Bits drew a lungful of them, and her chest burned in response. Fighting to focus, she made a motem cast to create a wind shield against the fumes, blowing them away from the pair so she would have a chance to recover, but the addition of glass shards was more than the wind could counter. Sparks tried to raise a curved wall of sand and solidify it to provide shelter, but before he could finish his chant one of the shards sliced deep into his side and he cried out, bending over in pain. No sooner was Sparks hit than Bits' focus tightened as she took on the task, moving to kneel at his side as she swept her hands up and over, then clenching her fists to bind the sand into rock. The pain of her lungs receded to something manageable, and her eyes narrowed. How dare they hurt her brother! She turned at the approach of another Asylum, prepared to fight them while Sparks patched himself up and got himself free, but instead found someone else's voice intruding on her thoughts.

Sparks took it upon himself to reply. Sorry hon, I'm a bit busy for a date. He grimaced against the pain, applying pressure and trying to work healing alchemy with a mumbled phrase. But at Siera's instructions, he sent wordless confirmation to Bits. She was better with barriers than he was. We'll do as you command, he added. Though quite honestly, I'm not sure less painful will be noticeable at the moment. Though he'd stopped the worst of the bleeding, his side didn't feel any better. As the woman next to him made a murmured vocum cast to create a barrier as directed, Sparks decided that it was time to call for a group cease-fire.

Hey, guys. This is Sparks. I'd like to ask if you all are willing to work together to handle the Chrono we're facing. My opinion is that besting her will be difficult, even if we all work together. There will be plenty of time to fight each other once we deal with the larger threat.

"I thought I mentioned something similar to that earlier." Cams' reply came almost immediately. He wasn't keen to work with a bigger group, but he admitted that the situation wasn't in their favour at all. "I'm for surviving. Whether Siera likes it or not, the answer will be yes. Get out of there safely first."

"There's some Sniffer arrogance you got there," Siera shot back. "I answer for myself, but yes, I am not in the mood for fun and games. I'm going come up now."

I remember introducing myself and my sister to your team back at the casino, Sparks answered, his easygoing nature showing through despite the current situation. I'd be very grateful if you could help heal me. He glanced at Bits, whose breath was still raspy. I think she could use a hand as well. With a string of murmured words, he turned the stone supporting the pair back into sand.

Fine. Seirra braced herself as she pushed upwards. The two barriers met and both structures wobbled. She focused on channeling the kinetic energy from earlier merging the two barriers into a solid bigger bubble that rolled off to the side. This prevented them from falling into the tunnel she created. She breathed a sigh of relief. All around them were flames, but their protective shell should hold for now. Her main concern was keeping those fumes out. Her fingers touched Spark's side and she tilted her head. Good news, you are doing remarkably well. I'm going to reopen your wound. Follow my mental instructions and make sure everything knits properly this time. I'm going to sacrifice some of my energy into healing your sister. Redoing this barrier is going to be tiring enough.

Yes ma'am, came the meek reply, accompanied by the half-hidden crinkling of his eyes that indicated a wide smile.

Siera grinned as she cupped the female Asylum's chin. She felt the lady withdraw slightly from her touch and she laughed. Skittish aren't you. I'm sorry though if this is your first kiss. I need to remove that air from your lungs and replace it. Her fingers pry the mask down gently. Hands tried to push her away, but she slapped them off

Bits, let her help you. Sparks tone held no room for argument. The blue-haired woman shuddered, not wanting to let anyone get so close to her.

The Asian looking girl recupped that delicate chin and pressed her lips against Bits'. She felt the woman cringing as very wide eyes stare at her in horror. The sides of Siera's mouth twitched, but she continued sucked the miasma out.

Done with the first bit. Siera pulled away. A bubble formed round her mouth as she puffed the blackish air into it. She bit down to seal the tiny orb and then pushed it out of their confined space altogether. The medic returned. Now I'm going to steal your second kiss. Lucky you, eh? I usually save tongue action for some hot guy I pick up at the bar. You're the wrong gender for my liking. Siera took a deep breath and the two women locked lips again. The younger one blew gently into her patient's mouth. The cleaner air filling up Bits' lungs.

Bits' expression was stony when the two parted, her eyes behind her goggles shadowed. Sparks felt a bit sorry for her, but there wasn't time to argue over whether Siera might have found a different way to work her healing. Still, his sister, with all the careful barriers she used to keep others away, was clearly upset, at least to his attuned eyes. Time enough to deal with that later. Right now they had to focus on getting clear, and seeing if the third team would join their alliance.

Satisfied that the woman looked a lot less ashened. Siera stood up and crack her knuckles. She hummed a little and then sang. The sing-song foreign words were soothing to listen to, but completely meaningless to those not familar with the language. A new bubble began forming underneath the original one. Due to the smaller space, the three Asylums were brought closer together, but Siera wasn't too fussy. She knew it wouldn't be for long. Just hang in there.

The emerging barrier pushed against the walls of the orginal one and shattered it. The released energy caused glassy thorns around them to break. Left behind is a thic, barely transulcent ball housing the three Asylums. Not the prettiest thing, but I feel we can put this to good use. Siera sounded really tired, but she managed to keep herself standing tall.

I'd appreciate it if both of you power this hamster ball and get us out of this hell zone. Any direction you wish. Once we've travelled the safe distance, I'll pop this barrier. For now I rather not inhale anymore of that air. Beads of sweat formed along Siera's brow. She smiled a little. Technically, she could do all that, but exhausting herself to the point of collapse was silly. The Chrono probably had something else planned. What happens after that is your show. I'll probably be relying on you to protect me.

You got it. Only fair we lend a hand, Sparks replied. Soft, rhythmic chanting followed, as he worked on shifting sand up behind them so they would roll forwards. After a moment, his sister joined with a cast of her own, pushing off the moving mound to increase their speed. The pair were used to working in tandem, using complimentary casts, so it took them mere moments to get their rhythm down, and soon they were hurtling at a decent clip away from where the Prodigy stood. Once they passed the barrier of fire, they slowed, before bringing the orb to a halt a goodly distance away. We need to figure out a game plan, Sparks commented, turning to look at the burning scene behind them.

Before Keith could convey his message to the other two, the young Chrono decided to take the first move and as the ground beneath the two Asylums, the two looked at each other. They already knew what they had to do. It was a three step plan Al came up a few weeks ago and although they've never had a chance to execute it during the pressures of a mission, the duo had a chance to practice it five times before of which only twice the plan turned out successfully.

Already seeing Keith starting to work on a barrier before the two could have a chance to converse, Al quickly moved besides Keith to make sure he was in the barrier before he turned his focus on the second phase. Although they've only tried this on the ground surface and once immersed in water, sand was a whole new element to work in. "Make sure to keep the barrier large enough for me to move around."

"That's a negative Ghost Rider. Durability over size, you'll have to make do." Keith said, struggling to talk telepathically while chanting the barrier in place as the duo started to get buried into the sand.

"Ghost Rider? Is that another movie quote?" Al said out loud with a slight huff.

"Come on, you had to watch Top Gun at one point or another. Even if you were raised with these guys, you can't be that sheltered."

Giving nothing more than a slight shrug, Al resumed his focus on the task at hand knowing far too well that starting up another squabble with limited oxygen, which was their biggest struggle before, wasn't a good idea. The limited size of the barrier would make it harder on him but at least Keith gave him enough space to move his arms around. He could feel a few metal deposits deep in the ground as well as some abandoned junk in the nearby vicinity, some not too far from the surface if not already above ground. If he went for the deeper deposits, it would be more strenuous to bring it towards them even with them sinking deeper into the sand. On the other hand, the metal for the miscellaneous items would be easier to retrieve but less reliable due to the impurities. "Efficient time waster or poor quality but readily available?"

"Poe is saying there is fire so start off with…crap!" Keith said cutting off seconds before a shard of glass pierced the side of the barrier. "Quick and now!" Keith said rushing towards the gash as he tried to fix the hole before the barrier started to disintegrate.

"Crap? That doesn't look like a pile of shit attacking us."

"If we don't have metal surrounding us in five seconds I'll turn you into a pile of shit." Keith said, his patience already starting to be tested by his teammate.

"Okay, okay. Don't worry, things are under control." Al said with a slight snicker as the top of the barrier started to be covered and worked its way down. Once the two were totally engulfed, Keith released his barrier and besides a little bit of sand that got in when the barrier was pierced, everything seemed to be in good shape. "I'll start working on bringing some of the other metals to us, find out what is happening Poe and any other animal creatures that might be nearby"

"Don't strain yourself too early in the game, okay." Keith said before trying to form a telepathic link to any nearby animals, preferably a mole or some other underground creature. However before he could, another telepathic link intruded. "Yes, but just don't tunnel through too far. We've constructed a metal barrier and my partner would be pissy if you destroyed it."

However before he could get a response, there was another person trying to contact them. "Al and I are good with teaming up." Keith said speaking for his partner before turning back to the first person. "If you can give us some momentum, I can get Al to construct a drill and I just contacted a family of moles who would love nothing more than to help us to surface at a safe place so that we would stop destroying their tunnels. Sounds good?"

"What the hell do you mean I'm going to construct a drill? We don't have time for this, we need to surface now or we'll run out of air." Al said to Keith, obviously against the idea but with his continual movement, Keith knew he was going along with the plan anyways. "It's done."

"You better hurry up then. This will be the fastest way out and a way to build relations with the other teams." Keith said before opening up the conversation back with Cam. "Okay, we're ready. Speed would be idea. The air is starting to get thin."

With Keith directing the group, Al moving the drill head at the front of the metal barrier and Cam pushing the barrier, the three reached the surface in no time. However it was a tad bit too long for the duo who were both feeling a bit lightheaded from the lack of oxygen at the end.

"Don't ever suggest creating a drill again." Exhaustion already seeping into Al's voice.

"Hey, at least we are ready for phase three."
