Personality:
Tárwen, a Shadow Dragon of mysterious depths, is a character of stark contrasts, both in his physical forms and his personality:
Complex: Tárwen's personality is a complex blend of guardedness and caring. He is initially distant and aloof, his past experiences having left him wary of forming close bonds. But beneath this exterior lies a protective and compassionate nature. He is reluctant to accept humans into his life, thanks to a shadowy and tormented past that haunts him.
Protective: Despite his initial standoffishness, Tárwen possesses a strong sense of protectiveness, especially toward those he grows to care for. He will go to great lengths to shield them from harm, even if it means confronting the darkness within himself.
Guarded: Tárwen keeps much of his past shrouded in secrecy, revealing only fragments of his history when he deems it necessary. His enigmatic aura only adds to the allure of his character, leaving those around him curious or intrigued.
Focused: Possessing an inner fire that burns with unrelenting intensity, Tárwen is driven forward even in the most daunting circumstances. This can be both an admirable strength and a relationship-shattering curse if not reined in. When he sets his sights on a goal, his determination is unwavering, propelling him with relentless purpose. When unchecked this can lead to the narrowing of his world vision, losing sight of anything outside of what it takes to achieve success. Equally powerful, his resolve also allows him to overcome formidable obstacles and confront challenges head-on.
Physical Features:
Dragon Form: In his colossal dragon form, Tárwen is a breathtaking and fearsome sight. His massive frame is covered in inky-black scales that exude a subtle deep blue sheen. His eyes are a dark void-like black with striking luminescent gold flecks within them, giving them a golden shimmer when caught in the right light. His tail is adorned with sharp aged-spikes, a weapon of deadly precision covered with hairline cracks from previous battles. His heart-scales a slightly silver obsidian, running the length from his chin down to his underbelly. The heart-scales on every dragon are the most dense, protecting the vulnerable hide underneath. When spread wide, it's evident that his wings are pure muscle, the striking deep blue membrane flashes when quickly unfurled. The force of a single flap when used as a defense can send an enemy careening. In this form, he exudes an aura of ancient power, commanding respect and awe.
Quote: "The day you ride me, human, is the day the seas run dry and the mountains crumble to dust!"
Human Form: When he takes on his human guise, Tárwen stands at 6'2". His raven-black hair - short and untamed, a clear sign of contemplation is when he rakes his fingers through it pushing the strands back away from his face. His eyes retain their mesmerizing golden flecks, unable to change features directly connected to his nin. In this form, he appears as a strikingly handsome man with an air of calm yet combative mystery that surrounds him. The only distinguishing mark that appears in both forms is a faded scar, positioned just over his left eye bisecting his brow.
Quote: "The mysteries of your human obsession with hair elude me entirely. Could that mere tuft of fluff possibly hold more significance than a feeble ear-warmer?"
Dragon Lore:
In the vast tapestry of dragon lore, the elusive Shadow Dragons stand as the rarest of their kind, their existence shrouded in enigmatic tales and whispered legends. What sets them apart from their brethren is not only their exceptional rarity but also the deep azure flames that erupt from their powerful maw. These vivid blue flames, radiant and haunting, serve as the most potent indication of a Shadow Dragon's profound connection to Nin.
Nin, a mystical and ethereal force, is the source of a dragon's power—a magic-like essence that flows through their veins, endowing them with unique abilities. It is the very essence of Nin that grants Dragons their ability to blow fire and command magic specific to their breed. Shadow Dragons, as their name suggests, retain the uncanny ability to control shadows, allowing them to move silently through the night and blend seamlessly with darkness. The most skilled can use shadows to cast illusions that deceive even the most discerning eyes.
Yet, the bond between a Dragon and Nin is not merely one of power, but of life itself. Disconnected from the currents of Nin, a Dragon is said to slowly wither as if deprived of oxygen. Their once vibrant flames become nothing more than a choking smoke caught in their throat, their once-muscular forms weaken, and their mighty powers diminish. In essence, the Nin is their lifeblood, their very soul, and to be severed from it is a fate that no Dragon can endure for long. According to some Dragon traditions, those who have lost their connection to Nin are said to be unable to enter The Celestial Gates—a heaven-like ethereal plane for dragon souls.
A Brief Character Backstory:
Tárwen, whose name translates to "Shadow of Hope" in dragon tongue, hails from a lineage of formidable Shadow Dragons. In their prime, they soared the skies as guardians to an ancestral mountain known to all dragon kind as The Arcane Spire. Their solemn duty was to protect a repository of profound magical knowledge hidden deep within — knowledge with the potential to shape the destiny of worlds. Among this wealth of knowledge deep within the mountain rested the infamous Heart-Stone, a legendary relic believed to grant its possessor a direct and unfiltered connection to Nin, the wellspring of dragon magic.
Yet, fate took a tragic turn when Tárwen and his family found themselves entangled in a conflict that divided dragons over traditions and unintentionally drew the attention of a sinister force. This malevolent entity sought to harness the Heart-Stone for nefarious purposes, setting in motion a war that spilled over into the realm of men. This conflict triggered a chain reaction, unleashing countless bloody wars, ultimately culminating in a catastrophic confrontation between humanity and dragons. Over time, the dragon species dwindled and those who survived ultimately lost sight of their very purpose. Tárwen was no different.
This dark chapter left him bearing not only physical but emotional scars as well. To safeguard his life, he was compelled to reject those he once considered his trusted kin and assume a human guise, concealing his true identity. Vanishing from history, for millennia he lived amongst humans, eventually growing disillusioned, seeing them only as potential threats and miserable reminders of the betrayal that had led to the downfall of his kin.
Haunted by the memories of his fallen brethren, Tárwen grapples with inner turmoil - a guilty survivor. His reluctance to place trust in humans serves as a defense mechanism against the pain of his past, yet beneath the surface, he longs for connection again. Committed to avoiding the same mistakes that led to the downfall of his kind, he embarks on a quest of redemption and seeks to locate the long-lost stone. His ultimate goal is to reunite his scattered kin and once again safeguard the relic for all eternity.
