A battle lost, but a battle won.

I stood on the wall protecting the kingdom. I looked over the field knowing a war was about to happen there. The others had left to get help from allied kingdoms so right now I am with the few that stayed to help. As I looked over the field a slight breeze blew over the grass. It's so peaceful... hard to believe what it's about to turn into. I stood with my hand on my sword. The sun was beating down on my face and a drop of sweet formed on my forehead. It went down my face and dripped off my cheek. I wasn't about to break formation and concentration in front of the others. We may be from a small kingdom but we are still highly trained in our chosen field of war. The archers were standing in the towers and the wizards/witches were off to the side enchanting the wall so it will hold longer. We could hear the marching off in the distance. It's only a matter of time... I felt nervous now that they are close enough to hear. We already knew they outnumbered us about 7 to 1.

Gods, this waiting is hell, she thought to herself, standing amongst the other archers, hearing the sounds of the enemy's greaves on the ground. It was nearly unbearable, knowing what was coming, but not being able to do much but wait. The soldiers probably had it worse inside the walls. They wouldn't be able to even see the enemy until the archers had already gotten their fill of them or when the walls fell.

The boredom and anticipation getting to her, she steps forwards, breaking formation, and looking out over the battlements of the wall, leaning forwards to try and see the approaching tide, but before she could, her commanding officer shouts, "Maree Connel, get back in form. You'd be no good to us if you fall over the wall before the battle even starts."

Sighing, she does as she's told, reverting to her bored state, and trying to imagine how far out the enemy must be.

Off in the distance we could see them breaking through the forest. I turned and walked down the stairs to join my men. I stood in front of them ready for the gate to open. After the first 3 rounds of arrows were shot we had to charge onto the battle field and hold them off long enough for help to arrive... if they ever come. I had a sick feeling they would turn their backs on us now... after all we are fighting one of the biggest kingdoms the world has ever known. At first all I could hear was my breathing but then the first set of arrows was fired and I could hear the screams of those who were hit. I then heard something that made chills go up my spine. I could hear big wooden wheals which meant they had found a way to get catapults to our kingdom. I was horrified at this point, knowing the nobles had ruled out the possibility of them getting any sort of siege weapons through the forest. A couple of men ran past me with torches to light the archer's arrows. Right then I knew the soldiers were going to have to fight without the support of the archers.

The gate started to open. I could see they had more than just siege weapons at their disposal. They had the most well-known Wizard the world has come to know. He was said to be able to do twice as much damage as 10 siege weapons in half the time. I just hoped we could get to him before he was able to tear down the wall.

"Gods above," Maree shouted, seeing the wizard. Glancing around for her commanding officer, to tell him about it, she found him lying dead already. Holding back a scream, she shouted, so that the others nearby could hear her, "That one, right there, get him, above all the others!" She didn't know what help it would do, knowing the stories told about the wizard, but hoped that someone would get a lucky shot in, and then they might actually be able to win the battle.

It wasn't long before she ran out of arrows, and was more or less handed a sword and was told, "Hold your own down there," before being sent down the wall to the ground. Having hardly any experience with a blade, she didn't know how long she could hold her own, but was going to give her damnedest.

I could see the archers had changed fire from the siege weapons to the wizard. Why would their officer tell them to do that! Of all people an officer should know arrows would just be blocked by his magical barrier! I sliced through a couple enemies before rushing at the wizard. I didn't get far before his guards saw me and I was 1 on 3 with them. I couldn't even get a swing in on one of them. All I could do was try to block the oncoming blows and hope someone would be able to kill the wizard while the guards were distracted. After a couple of close calls I could see the wizard was already starting to cast a spell. I knew it was only a matter of time before the wall would stand no longer.

The air practically buzzed with supernatural energy. Maree, feeling the tension, and also how it felt like it was seconds from breaking, turned towards where she thought it was coming from. Sure enough, that damned wizard was casting a spell. Running up and attacking him would be suicide...but, it looked like the guards he had were distracted with another soldier...His back was turned to her, it wouldn't be hard to just do it. Thoughts of those manner ran through her head, even before she realized that she was sprinting towards the wizard, taking the chance. Using her smaller form to weave through the other soldiers, both a part of the defending city's soldiers and the invading kingdom's, she readied her sword, quickly closing the distance between her and the wizard. This is it, she thought.

I was blocking attacks that seemed to be getting fiercer and fiercer. I felt like I would not be able to hold them off much longer. A sense of false relief fell over me as I saw a smaller female archer running at the wizard. Hurry hurry. I thought as I was evading and blocking the blows. Just as I thought she had him, he finished the spell and a large portion of the wall was destroyed. A couple bits of the wall hit one of the guards and I was able to get in a swing which cut off his leg. If she is able to finish him then we still have a chance. I could see an enemy was closing in on her and before I knew it I had jumped back from the guards, took my throwing ax that was kept in case of emergency and threw it at the man. He fell just inches from her as she was inches from the wizard.

Hearing footsteps closer behind her, Maree almost spun around to strike back, and probably lose her chance with the wizard, but caught, out of the corner of her eye, the sight of an axe digging itself deep into the him, and she was able to turn her attention back towards the wizard. Using her momentum, she spun to meet him, her sword seeming to do the work for her as she embedded the blade in him, before pulling away, not sure if what she had done had actually done anything. He was a wizard, after all, and she had barely any experience with magic and how it worked. However, that didn't stop her from whispering a quick prayer to the gods that she had done something right.

I could see she had gotten him with the sword. I watched as the wizard fell. The only way to kill a wizard of that strength was by sword and the archer had done just that. While I was distracted the guards, who still didn't seem to know their master had fallen, took the opportunity to take a free swing. I fell back trying to dodge it, losing my sword in the process, and the two guards went to bring a sword down into me. I had a slight realization that this was going to be my death bed. My life flashed before my eyes as I quickly muttered my final prayer.

A streak of fire blazes through the men. A cat, with a coat of fire and eyes green as the grass she ran on was running through them, dispatching anyone in her way. Jumps over the man on the ground and knocks the blades away from his attacker rearing up on her hind legs slashes at ones chest then pounces on the other pining him down and dispatching him with one bite. Turns to the man on the ground and with a nod of her head is gone into the crowd.

What was that... I quickly shook that thought away as I ran to defend the gate. Just then everything was shaded orange. I realized the wizard wasn't trying to destroy the wall. He was going to kill everyone and the rest of the army who were surly on standby would rush into the defenseless kingdom. I yelled "Retreat!" I yelled as I started to run to the kingdom. I could hear the panic soldiers running behind me. Just as we were closing in on the safety of the wall we were hit. We were instantly killed. It didn't even take a split second; no one knew what hit them.

Strangely enough I woke up in a cave. A couple others were still lying unconscious. What... this isn't right I'm dead... this... this is impossible... I stood up and looked around. Why would I have been spared? There were much better men than me out there. I'm just a killer... surly the Gods knew that.

"I am the commander of the kingdoms army! I am not merely a boy! I have killed more men than anyone in the entire kingdom!" He was thinking about drawling his sword but figured there was a reason why she was selected to be spared with him. He let go of the handle and turned to look out the cave. It was located near the top of a mountain.

"It doesn't matter.. I remember you from when you were younger." He continues to look over the landscape. Then he frowns and walks back inside the cave. He recognizes the female archer that killed the wizard a second too late. He stares at her for a second then goes over to the wall and leans against it drawling his sword.

"I know everyone in our kingdom." He started to sharpen his sword though it didn't need it. He keeps his sword so sharp that even waving a hand over it would cause a serious cut. "It's not that big of a kingdom you know." He stopped to examine his work. "You're saying you don't remember me from before the battle?" After that he started sharpening it again.
