One can only be so lucky, he pondered. The confines of his mind were a deep enigma, branching onto the smallest thoughts and wonderment that he could think of. Luck had took its course and coaxed him to stalk deeper into the foreboding forest that stretched out like an opaque canvas in front of the man. The body was heavy. Oh yes, it was heavy indeed. Was it heavy with thedisavowalof the earlier actions he had put forth on the bulging carcass that lie in his callused hands? The repeated stabbing of flesh into the last screams died out from the man's shuddering throat? Only the forest's call was the man's answer, the man sluggishly carrying the body through the dense foliage.
Thunk. That was the sound the body made when it finally dropped and rolled onto the deep earth beneath it. Wandering brown eyes scrutinized the body, for fear that the soul may return to inhabit the grotesque vessel. He chose to wait no longer, fondling his fingers in the deep crevices of his pant's pocket to extract a flimsy box of matches. The scenery was already sit, flammable leaves and pine strands littering the body around it. He had nearly forgotten about the gasoline can in his other pocket. Time was of the essence. The actions were as followed: pour, drench, strike. A flicker of blue coated the tip of the match before being replaced by the yellow and orange hues of fire. He flicked the entire match onto the body, seeing it land on the man's gas drenched femur.
The expansion of flames was the quick reaction, coating the forest in a ominous cloud of smoke. The nearby frankincense that coated the leaves swivled and danced with the smog of the burning flesh. The performance was enthralling in the man's heavy eyes as he continued to spectate the sheer wonderment that was on display before him. The cackling of the fire drowned out the booming sounds of prior diffidence that poisoned his mind. Reluctancy had long since departed as stood there, proud of his work. A burst of colors zipped bast his eyes as he rose his head high into an air, standing aghast. It was a spectacle of death and he had forged it with his own crimson hands.
In only a matter of moments Allayna had found the opening of a cave. She didn't have any apprehension as she took a step in, then another. Without warning the stony walls of the cave became draped in red velvet. Soft noises could be heard in the depths of the cave. Now wasn't the time to stop, she had to push further, she needed to push further. As she ventured farther in the unmistakable scent of frankincense hit her. I'm not turning back, she thought to herself.
Hiding behind a rock just outside of the inner room of the cave, she saw where the sounds were coming from. The room was draped in red velvet. Red settees were all around the edge of the room. Scenes of pure ecstasy were being played out on each seat. Two girls tangled together, two men intertwined, other couples in erotic positions. The room was filled with the sounds of various moans and groans, but straight back on a raised platform was the most terrifying picture.
Allayna was aghast with the scene playing out in front of her. Sitting in an immaculate throne was a man made of pure evil. His skin was translucent and nails were black. Long boney fingers were tied up in the hair of two girls that were at his sides. They caressed and kissed him, each girl trying to seduce the man, but he didn’t show any signs of enjoyment. Suddenly every passionate couple stopped, their eyes immediately drawn to Allayna. Heat rose up in her body as she started feeling afraid, but she didn’t have time to leave. In a flash the man from the throne was next to her.
“I can no longer fulfill my duties,” a voice hissed in her mind. That voice caused her whole body to stiffen. “It is your job to do what I cannot. You now have the duties of the….” His voice trailed off and a sinister smile crept across his lips exposing white pointed teeth. “Devil.” The man reached out to her, his long fingers beckoning her to join him. Allayna shook her head in utter disavowal. This isn’t happening she can’t be the devil, she couldn’t kill and destroy.
There was no going back. The devil was in her, and the frightening desire to feel blood trickle off her fingers terrified her. Her dreams were plagued with murder. Bodies hung, dripping with blood, from trees. Lakes filled with thick plasma instead of the coolness of fresh water. Allayna grew tired of fighting the spirit. It was no longer time to diffident. The time has come to feed the monster within.
Emma tiptoed down the hall to see why there was a sliver of light shafting out of her grandfather's room in the middle of the night. As she drew near, a faint aroma began to fill the air. Memories from her childhood rose in her mind of frankincense burning in her grandparent's home almost every time she'd visited. The memory was so vivid that she was enthralled to the point that she could hear her grandmother's voice.
Wait no, it was her grandmother's voice coming from his room. But how? She had been gone for almost ten years now. Her mind was full of diffidence and not a little disavowal. Perhaps she was sleeping, and this was all a dream. Surely...that had to be the answer. But then that sweet voice came again, followed by her grandfather's. They were talking to one another.
She peeked into the room and recoiled aghast. Her hand went to her mouth to prevent any sound alerting him to her presence as she returned to peek in again. There her sweet grandfather sat in the center of an odd circle, with the incense burning. From the smoke the form of her grandmother could be clearly seen and the two were talking together. Suddenly though red angry eyes peered her direction and the smoky image disappeared.
She frowned and then the door was wide open as she stood face to face with her grandfather. "I..."
He sighed, "You forget what you saw," he said gently, "No one needs to know."
"No one would believe me."
"You'd be surprised. But please...don't tell anyone."
"Ok Papaw....promise." She hugged him tight and then went back to bed, but she did wonder why she shouldn't tell anyone. until the next morning when Papaw was lying still and cold in his bed and a note next to him read, in grandmother's hand, "Mine in life now mine in death."
