So is the tone very grim? I have no experience with Dungeons and Dragons, but I always visualized it as fairly "normal" high fantasy. Is this more on the adventurous and magical end of the spectrum, or very dark and serious, like Berserk?
D&D's Dark Sun setting is post-apocalyptic fantasy. The premise was that high fantasy magic went out of control and scorched the world, snuffing out empires and wiping out races. As a result, the survivors (those that remain) are generally intolerant of magic, as they rightly believe it to be the scourge of civilization. But while magic is rarely practiced, new powers (psionics) evolved to take its place.
Instead of medieval kingdoms imagine desert tribes and warlords. Instead of loyal questing heroes imagine self-governing hardened survivors. It's lawless. It's brutal. I'm a fan.
