Roz, born in Brisbane, Australia, hasn't had the best childhood since her mother was admitted to a mental ward when she was eight and her father was a bit of a drunk so she raised her younger brother on her own. When she reached the age of fourteen, her mother's brother from New Jersey reached out — he hadn't known that e had a neice and nephew since Roz's mother had eloped. Her uncle had volunteered to be their guardian if they wished and after a while they started to live with him, till Roz graduated high school and went on to pursue her love for art and photography. It was in high school that she met Alphonse and though he left to join the army, she always wrote to him and waited till he came back, after which she had graduated and they moved in together.

My mom ended up pregnant during her Junior year of college. She was gonna abort me until my dad convinced her that they could make good parents. Four months into her pregnancy, he proposed, and they got married three months later. My mom went into labor during a family reunion in Brooklyn, much to everyone's surprise, and after I was born, I was originally named Chanel Howard. Because of my parents still trying to finish school, however, I spent the first few years of my life living with my maternal grandmother in Harlem. My grandmother was great; she could cook her ass off, she always left me to my own devices, and her apartment always smelled like Jollof rice. She died when I was twelve.

After my dad finished college, he was drafted into the NFL. I was five years old when he was traded to the Oakland Raiders, and six when my family packed up and moved to California. My dad made good money, enough to buy us this big fancy house in Beverly Hills and a brand new car for my mom. He'd even put some money away in a bank account to accumulate interest so that, by the time I begin college, I'll have enough to pay for it without needing loans. We lived a happy life, I guess you could say. My mom finished school and got a job as a pharmacist, and my dad was always travelling with his team. Things got all fucked up when my dad came home one night and told my mom that he'd gotten some girl pregnant. That was when everything started to spiral downward.

They tried to work it out at first. They argued almost every night, which usually resulted in my father storming out and not returning until the morning after. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I found out that he was leaving to go to his new baby mama's house. Turns out, it wasn't just a one night stand. He'd been secretly seeing this woman for months. My mom filed for a divorce as soon as she found out, and ended up getting a good amount of money when it was all finalized. My father moved to a house in Oakland with the other woman, and ended up proposing to her just a few months after the divorce.

Now, fast forward seventeen years. My mom and I had moved back to Brooklyn as soon as the divorce was finalized. She's had a few dates here and there, but no one ever stuck.
