Annika's mother was a Celestine, and his father a dastardly man, who was only with her because of that fact. He abused her and made a profit from it. Despite that, she remained with him. The man did not want children, but when Annika was conceived, she convinced him to keep the child. Annika was born, and he was named by his mother after her mother. Although a hybrid, he had inherited her Celestine powers. His mother was of a weak disposition, and his birth had been difficult. She never quite recovered, and five years after he was born, she took ill and died as a result. Annika was left alone with his father, who had no interest in a child.
His father used Annika for his healing abilities, as he had his mother, but he found having a child tedious. For a year, things continued that way. But his father only grew more frustrated with his child, and wanted nothing to do with him. Eventually, through his black market connections, he found someone willing to purchase Annika outright. His father struck the deal, happy with his lump sum and lack of child.
Annika was kept imprisoned, made to bleed and cry for the profit of his captors. He spent the rest of his childhood in misery. At some point, unbeknownst to him, Annika was transported from Neu Kingdom to Cervia. All he knew of the experience was that he spent it seasick in the cargo hold of a ship. His captivity lasted a long time, but eventually, the opportunity arrived and Annika escaped. One of his captors slipped and fell unconscious, giving Annika the chance to escape, although not before killing the man.
Although he did not know it, Annika found himself in Merrow. All he knew was that it was cold, terrible, and the middle of the night. Annika attempted to find someone to help him, but was turned away at every door he tried. Freezing, he passed out, expecting to never wake up. But he did. He found himself on a couch, tended to by an older woman. She seemed as impressed as him that he wasn't dead. She said she would allow him to recuperate there, in exchange for sexual favours. Incapable of leaving, and facing death as the alternative option, he agreed. He remained there for several weeks, before protesting the arrangement. She kicked him out.
Having literally nothing, Annika turned to prostitution. Inexperienced with the world, however, he was terrible at it. He often found himself beaten or exploited, and barely earned enough to keep himself from dying. Eventually, a would-be customer took pity on him, and offered to help him out in exchange for a small cut of the profit. Desperate, Annika agreed, only to end up trapped in the man's abuses.
Eventually, Annika snapped back. He killed the man and looted his house before fleeing Merrow. At that point, Annika had wizened up and learned a lot. He was a lot smarter in his actions, and successfully made his way to Black City. Annika was bitter and dissatisfied and did not know what he wanted, except to make his father suffer. He went to the Neu Kingdom Embassy, in an attempt to get back to Neu Kingdom. But Annika was undocumented, with nearly nothing to attach him to his previous life. Frustrated, he refused to give up and harassed them until he got what he wanted.
He managed to catch the attention of Sephaniel Swann, who had a less than altruistic interest in him. But Sephaniel was
important, and Annika decided that was a good place to start, convincing himself wherever he needed to go, it was up. And it was not as if he was in a position to defy the man. The royal promised he would continue to look into Annika's case. And he offered Annika residence and more, in exchange for feeding off of him. While they had their deal in private, the two did not associate in public. But Sephaniel honoured his promises, and Annika was able to live well, and recover as much as he could from his imprisonment. Furthermore, he caught up on the schooling he lacked, eventually even pursuing further education. Having spoken it as a child, Annika had a knack for German, and eventually took a role working for the Neu Kingdom Embassy as a translator and interpreter.
