: as much of a virtue as it is a fatal flaw - edra likes to see the good in people before he considers the bad. sure he knows his limits and won't bother trying to speak peace with a bandit holding him a knifepoint but when not faced with obvious danger he likes to believe that there is good in the people around him and doesn't automatically assume hostility or deception in their actions or their words.
MORAL ALIGNMENT :⠀lawful neutral.
PLACE OF BIRTH :⠀unknown, eastern islands.
residence : the order temple, lodenys. recently edra has traveled alongside several other master apothecaries and initiates to the kingdom of arcadia to investigate the king's strange illness. he, along with his brothers, have been offered temporary residence in the local temple though edra finds that it's much too hot and stuffy for his liking and has managed to sweet-talk a serving girl into letting him sneak into the much cooler cellars to sleep.
BACKGROUND :⠀discovered as a toddler hidden in the hold of an eastern trading vessel bound for the kingdom of lodenys, much of edra's origins are a mystery. due ongoing conflicts in the islands it was suspect the young child was hidden away by his parents as a means to secure his safety in the mainland though it's just as likely that he was the son of a dockworker who managed to slip away when his parents weren't looking. whatever the case he never returned to the eastern islands and, instead, was taken under the care of the order of apothecaries. here life was fairly simple - he, alongside many other orphans and abandoned children, would spend their days tending to chores about the temple grounds. cooking, cleaning, tending to the horses, lighting candles, collecting and drying the herbs needed for medicinal concoctions. it would be during this time that he would be taken under the wing of the temple warden, ranom aep glaedell, who saw great promise in the child. he was restless, ambitious, and intelligent. some would even say too intelligent. often acting as a ring-leader amongst his fellow orphans, devising many a mischievous plot that would often land them in trouble. ranom would teach the boy to fight and, when he expressed interest, heal. teaching him both the ways of the modern apothecary as well as some secrets held only by the northern tribesman. and, when edra was sixteen, ranom would stand as his patron as the young man petitioned to join the order of apothecaries where he was taken on as a novice. from there his life has been a rather dizzying blur - the order is far from lax on those who seek to pursue its calling and, as a result, edra lives a fairly strict life. the first few years were nothing but harsh and never-ending lessons but, at the age of twenty, he was granted the role of initiate. what this means is that he spends his days shadowing the master apothecaries, tending to their needs and assisting in their work but mostly handling all the heavy lifting, arduous traveling, and the fighting that comes with traveling the lands assisting those who call upon the order. in the eight years since edra has traveled most the mainland, met many people, studied many illnesses, and fought many battles against bandit and desperate peasant alike. it is rather solitary life, even when in the company of his brothers of the order, but it one that he seems to enjoy and embrace fully.
CHARACTER TRIVIA :⠀
one : edra's name is considered a bit strange as, despite hailing from the eastern islands and being raised on the mainland he was actually named by the warden in charge of the temple orphans. an old northern tribesman by the name of ranom aep glaedell or ranom, son of glaedell, he took the young stowaway under his wing, giving him his name and later claiming the boy as his own son. edra looked up to ranom and, when old enough, it was the old warden who taught him how to fight and acted as edra's patron when he would later be accepted as a novice in the order of apothecaries. though edra knows ranom was not his father he still carries his name, aep ranom, with great pride and refers to the man fondly as father. due to his age and failing health, however, the now-retired ranom stayed behind at the temple when edra accompanied the apothecaries and other initiates to the kingdom of arcadia.
two : contrary to popular belief there are many roles within the order of the apothecaries. while most assume they are all just that, apothecaries, the truth is much more convoluted. young men between the ages of thirteen and nineteen are recruited as novices and spend their days laboring over lessons and training, if they are deemed worthy they are given the rank of initiate at twenty where they act as the apprentices and guardians of the master apothecaries. upon their thirty-fifth birthday, or should they be unable to fight due to illness or injury leading to being permanently crippled, they are then made into true apothecaries and may seek their own path and settle wherever it is they wish. and, when they are too old to handle the road themselves, they may either retire as a warden or a priest of the order temple or they may become master apothecaries and spend the rest of their days tending to their work and training their initiate apprentices. and that's not including the orphans and priestesses of the temple who oversee much of its upkeep, care, and rituals.
three : it's unknown if he's actually twenty-eight years old as no one knows his exact age when he was found. it was believed he was roughly three, however, and that's simply what he has gone with since though there is a very really possibility that he may be a year younger or a year older than what he currently claims.
four : edra enjoys cooking albeit at the risk of those around him. that's not to say he's a bad cook as he's anything but but he has a very particular fondness for trying new things even if he's not sure just how well they'll turn out. while he's careful to never cook something that may make someone ill the flavor combinations and spices are considered a bit unconventional to those used to a certain palette.
