Okay, after noticing a few widely popular zombie-themed roleplays, all of which were either dead in the water, or too far along to comfortably join, I decided to post this interest check for a new one. @JinxMonster is my co-conspirator and, should this idea come to fruition, she will be co-GM as well.

The premise:
  • January, 2024
A scientist in California, working on a vaccine for Toxoplasmosis, which is the disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, begins human trials.
  • March, 2025
The vaccine is deemed a success, and the process of approval for distribution begins.
  • April, 2025
The lead scientist of the T. gondii vaccine dies of a heart attack.
  • April, 2025
A new lead scientist is assigned to the project. Makes minor edits to the quantity of some substances found in the vaccine, but the changes are minute, and a repeat of human trials is deemed unnecessary.
  • June, 2025
The vaccine is approved for worldwide distribution... and the apocalypse begins.
  • September, 2025
50% of the human population is either infected, or dead. The rest are in hiding, trying to survive.
  • January, 2026
A scientist by the name of Aaron Fletcher, who was one of the assistants during the trials, begins work on a possible cure.
  • March, 2026
Dr. Fletcher, after months of trying, has given up on a cure. It seems impossible. He switches gears, opting to try to create an immunity vaccine instead.
  • May 2026 (our legacy begins here!)
The immunity vaccine is ready for human trials.

The disease:

Unlike most zombie plots, the Z. gondii zombies are not the result of a virus, but, rather, a brain-attacking parasite. It is estimated that 30% - 50% of the human population are already carriers of T. gondii, which is spread largely in part by cats, pigs, sheep, and other livestock. Post-vaccination, anyone who did not carry the parasite was unaffected. However, those who did harbor T. gondii within their system, and were exposed to the vaccine, are a part of "Group X" - the original "zombies".

Contrary to popular belief, the Z. gondii zombies are not undead, and the dead can not be resurrected by the parasite. Once the human body dies, it is dead. While the corpse (if infected while alive) can still be a carrier for disease for up to 72 hours after death, there is no risk of anyone who dies being "reborn" as a zombie. The parasite, that lives in the brain, relies on the human body to keep it alive. If the body dies, the parasite dies as well.

How is it spread?:

Toxoplasma gondii AKA T. gondii (the original parasite) is spread via under cooked contaminated meat, unwashed contaminated fruits & vegetables, and contaminated water, soil, and cat litter coming into contact with the eyes, nose or mouth.

Zaraplasma gondii AKA Z. gondii (the mutated parasite) is spread from mammal to mammal via bodily fluids, including blood, saliva, ejaculatory excretions, and excrement of both solid and liquid varieties.

Symptoms & Timeframe:

Hours After Infection || Symptoms

24 || Mild, cold-like symptoms
36 || Swollen lymph nodes/throat
48 || Crippling migraines, memory loss
60 || Loss of pain receptors, fits of blind rage
72 || Complete loss of bodily & cognitive functions, increased healing
72+ || All memory gone, reverted to primal instincts

In depth symptoms:

24 hours after the infection, the host will experience mild, cold or flu-like symptoms, including headaches, stuffy/runny nose, congestion, sore throat and cough. If the infection was obtained by a bite, the site may grow red, irritated, and inflamed.

36 hours after the infection, in addition to the symptoms above growing worse, swollen lymph nodes will develop, along with a sore throat that progressively worsens and may inhibit breathing via compression of the trachea caused by the swelling.

48 hours after the infection, you will begin to experience memory loss, both short and long term, and blinding, crippling migraines.

60 hours after the infection, the host will lose all pain receptors in the body. Both a blessing and a curse, as the fits of blind rage that follow often involve the host being injured in some way or another.

72 hours after the infection, the host has lost all memory and the parasite is in complete control.

After the 72 hour timeframe, the human host is now only that, a host. All cognitive function has ceased, and, essentially, the "person" inside the body is gone. There are no memories, no thoughts, only primal instincts and rage, the urge to kill, and to eat, any living thing that crosses its path (though the parasites seem to somehow recognize other host-bodies, and leave them be). Any mammal can be infected with Z. gondii, although only those with physical attributes and digestive tracts suited for hunting and eating meat typically survive the infection, as any inclination to eat other organic material disappears once infected. As a result, natural carnivores are often hosts of Z. gondii. Birds, fish, invertebrates, reptiles, bugs, and amphibians seem to be unaffected by Z. gondii, and zombies do not actively hunt these creatures.

OOC:

[I will write an actual RP-type post in here somewhere, but basically the idea is this: @JinxMonster and myself will be playing Dr. Fletcher's children. Before he can get in contact with anyone in Washington (there are rumors that a cure is in the works there too) the house is somehow overrun with zombies, bandits, something of the sort, and Dr. Fletcher is killed. Before that, however, he manages to inject the immunity into the closest living thing he can find, his late wife's service dog, Hero. Instructing his children to get Hero to Washington at ALL COSTS, he sacrifices himself to provide their escape.]

Where you guys come in!

The two teenagers flee with Hero, determined to make the trip from West Texas to Washington DC to honor their father's sacrifice. Along the way, they will meet new survivors, both friendly and unfriendly, skilled and unskilled, and fight to survive long enough to save the world. At some point, the group will find themselves in a pickle that looks very dire. At the last moment, they are rescued by another group of survivors, and escorted to their home, a walled-off community that seems incredibly safe and appealing... but there is a darkness there that is not at first seen... how will our survivors react when the people who once helped them seem to now want to do exactly the opposite?

Comments!

Ok so at most, we're probably looking at, idk, maybe 5-6 people aside from @JinxMonster and myself, just so it doesn't get incredibly crazy.

Everyone is going to need to play at least two characters, one main and one side. Main characters will be a part of the group that's traveling with the Fletcher siblings and Hero. They can meet up with the trio at any point in the storyline leading up to the "rescue" unless you want your MAIN character to be a part of the rescue group that decides they want to stay with them.

Side characters will be a part of the "rescue group" or the community that they belong to. (Think Woodberry from The Walking Dead, not everyone knows their leadership is evil, and once they do may revolt and decide to stay with the main group.) This is completely acceptable, though in this case I'll ask your side character be a part of the traveling group, and can be killed off for plot advancement before your main character enters the scene.

If anyone is interested, let me know! I can get the IC up as early as tomorrow night if we get enough interest!

This will be a mature rated roleplay, not for sex or romance purposes (though that's fine between consenting adult characters, idc) but because it's going to be incredibly gory, violent, and dark, along with probably quite a bit of foul language. No one-liner (or preferably even one paragraph) posts, we are looking for rather literate players. :)

Please note that all of this is still in the works, if anyone has any questions, comments, or suggestions, please let me know, I will take anything into consideration as this was kind of a spur of the moment thing! :)

Edit: Summary

Dr. Aaron Fletcher has developed a vaccine for Z. gondii, but before he can get in contact with people who can take it further, disaster strikes, and the Fletcher home is overrun. Desperate to salvage his cure, and, possibly, the world, he injects the vaccine into the nearest living thing he can find, his late wife's service dog, Hero. Instructing his children to get Hero to Washington at ALL COSTS, he sacrifices himself to provide their escape. At the last moment, they are rescued by another group of survivors, and escorted to their home, Impact Point, a walled-off community that seems incredibly safe and appealing... but there is a darkness there that is not at first seen... how will our survivors react when the people who once helped them seem to now want to do exactly the opposite?

Okay after reading this, I love it, very unique from the usual zombie threads you'd see here. So I am totally interested. But I do have one question, what is the characteristics of the infected, I didn't see anything when I read the op. (Pardon me if I did miss it lol) but do they run, or walk? Are they rotting? Or are they not. Just simple questions ^_^

I appreciate the invitation, but I too will decline. I normally only play one chara per rp and I'm already in a Zombiepocalypse rp as it is.

They are a little different from normal zombies. They aren't physically dead, more mentally dead, as the microscopic parasites take control of the brain and destroy all humanity in a person. So the "zombies" are actually alive, but they don't feel pain, and don't feel anything, really, except the primal urge to hunt and kill. @JinxMonster had an idea that the parasites enable the body to heal at a much faster rate than usual, which would make the zombies much scarier imo as any non fatal wound would be useless, much with your typical zombie. These ones wouldn't be rotting per se, but most would have open wounds, missing limbs, etc, and the physical state of the zombie would effect its ability to traverse terrain. Like one in "perfect health" would be... not super fast and coordinated, but also not your slow, shambling zombies either.

This is all still in the works, so we can edit or remove or add any aspect, if we figure out something better!

Apologies for formatting, on my phone right now.

Hey, hey, hey~

I saw in one of the invite threads I was watching (because I myself sent an invite) and this looks awesome!

As I was reading, I got an idea for a survivor that's basically a self-insert based on the fact that my nom de plume uses "Fletcher" as a surname, but that was swept out from under me when I read you two'd be the only one's playing family of the scientist. I am open to leaving the idea alone, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask; could I play a distant cousin or aunt who comes from a different state? Perhaps someone who the Fletcher kids haven't seen since youth? If you rather wouldn't, it's fine, I'll think of something else.

Yeah that wouldn't be an issue at all! A cousin sounds nice! :D

In the name of the Emperor rid this Chaos fil--!

Oh? Zombies? Brain attacking parasites instead of a virus? Write as two characters? You have my interest. I shall read through the above more thoroughly and send questions over, if any at all.

I absoloutely love this, and I'm still in. I'll be reusing characters from an old zombie rp, so I already have two characters with Finch as my main and Marcy as my side. ^^ Let me know when the thread takes off.

When will we start seeing the sign ups?
