It had been a long and grueling path but the finish line was in sight for the finalists. None of them knew the number of fighters they had started with but they could only guess that it had been in the hundreds if not more considering how packed the colosseum-like area had been when they first had been brought to the tournament.

A few weeks later and now they were the only ones left standing. None of the finalists had the pleasure to have fought each in the past, which was a testament to the scope of this multiversal tournament of fighters. After their last battle, they had been sent back to the welcoming area they had started in.

After all this time the contestants had never seen anyone they could have said was the host of this tournament. The only actual human they had any contact with had been a man called Zack who had been the spokesman of the competition. Strangely enough, he had also been a contestant and had rather unceremoniously been eliminated by Kasumi, a native of his dimension.

As it were now the only thing they saw was an empty stage followed by a disembodied voice filling the area. The voice, however, was new. While the other announcers had been male this one clearly belonged to a woman.

"Congratulations on making it this far. The prize you have sought will be soon within your grasps. Sadly…only one of you can be crowned the strongest in the multiverse. If you look around you will find your final stepping stone to greatness. As a prize for reaching this far, your accommodations will be…upgraded. As usual, we will announce when your next fight starts and send you directly to the arena of your choosing. Who of you will reign supreme? We shall soon find out."

When the voice went silent the competitors found themselves transported, a feeling they had grown accustomed with during their stay here. Once they materialized they found themselves on a huge balcony overlooking a beach that seemed to go on for miles with the glistening sun shining down on the. The balcony was attached to a house that they could only assume was owned by someone with a lot of money to spare. Stepping through the glass doors into the house they'd find a huge lounge area with a bar in the back and more than enough space for everyone to fit. There was also a huge flat-screen TV and comfy sofas strewn about the area as well as a kitchen with any ingredients they could have imagined. In the center of the room, they found a spiral staircase that led down to the sleeping quarters. You'd find your name engraved on them. Inside a lavish bedroom area and your personal bathroom. The spiral staircase continued down further where the contestants found a gym that seemed to house everything that they desired. While the accommodations before this had been impressive…this place was on a whole other level.

For now, there wasn't much else they could do other than sit back and wait for their next battle. Perhaps this was a good time to get some final training in, or maybe to get to know the competition?

She had come far since the beginning of the tournament. It wasn't easy. There were some very experienced fighters in this tournament! Yet somehow Min Min managed to get through the tournament and make it to the finals. As the fighters were transported to a house, Min Min admired the beautiful beach view with a grin. Until she noticed the kitchen area, that is. Quickly running into the kitchen, the literal noodle armed fighter made herself a huge bowl of ramen noodles!

Finally, they had made it to the top of the brackets. The young woman who wore her emotions on her sleeve seemed to swell with deserved pride at how much she had achieved. The climb up the mountain of fighters to reach this place had been fierce, each of her opponents stronger and more skilled than the last. Yet in the face of each challenge, she had trusted in her Rindo-kan style and fought with all her heart, never believing she could lose.

Now she stood among the remaining fighters, the best of the best. The greatest fighters that the so-called multiverse had ever seen rise to prominence... and the Tosan teen was one of their numbers. For some people, the thought of fighting against warriors of this caliber would cause their knees to shake and rattle in worry.

For Makoto Kato, this was the fruition of her dream; to prove the strength of her father's style against the best of the best, and she would not fail!

"Hey, you!"

The girl settled on the shinobi who seemed the most skilled here. The redhead had caught Makoto's eye when she had defeated the competition's spokeman, and each successive match she had won only proved the idea in the teenager's mind. She was the person to beat here; the one who was the strongest at the moment, and the one whose style's defeat would prove the greatness of Rindo-kan karate.

Approaching the shinobi with her hachimaki fluttering behind, Makoto jabbed a finger Kasumi's way to single her out. A heated scowl of determination stared at the shinobi, its owner not giving her a chance to get a word in before continuing.

"You're Kasumi, right? The one who defeated the spokesman for this competition?"

@Verite

So, this was it. She was so close to finally being done with it all...so close for everything to finally come to an end. Parasoul had only one thing on her mind this entire time-getting her wish. Back home, there was only one way to get a wish, and it had to be the most horrid of them all: the Skull Heart. The same accursed thing that had claimed her mother, and so many other lives...all for some wish. It was disgusting, and Parasoul wanted it gone. If she could win this tournament, she could save her people.

But first, she needed to relax. Last round hadn't been the easiest by any means. The girl she'd faced, Iroha, had been determined to win for the sake of her Master. A noble thing to fight for, but even then, Parasoul couldn't let anyone else beat her. This wish wasn't just for her, it was for her people.

Walking over to the bar, Parasoul decided to pour herself some wine. She left the bottle out in case anyone else wanted any (well, anyone legally allowed to drink, that is), and took a sip, sitting on one of the stools.

Linne carried a wish to die.

It almost seemed like a waste, compared to the surely grandiose desires the other remaining participants had. But to prevent herself from taking the lives of any more girls through her cursed immortality, she had to prevail. This tournament was a fight for her own demise. Yet there was nothing she wanted more than that. Her power was beyond her control, her soul seeking out a new host every time her body was destroyed.

After ages of searching she'd found a sword that could rend her very Existence apart, but to make that boy kill her was something she would deeply regret. He was still a naive child. If there was a way to die without forcing him to perform such a task, then she'd fight for that path.

But here in this fancy waiting room, her path too would have to pull to a halt for now, just like it did between every match. But to someone who'd lived for hundreds of years, a meager wait like this meant nothing. She had little to gain from training in this short time frame and decided to relax her body so that she could perform at full power in her next match.

Intentionally avoiding the confrontational Karate user and ninja she was addressing, Linne headed over to the kitchen to grab some food.

As Min Min was making herself two bowls of noodles noodles, she noticed someone walk into the kitchen. Min Min turned to the new arrival, offering her the other bowl of noodles she had made with a warm smile.

One of the contestants sat silently down on the sofa placing the case he was holding next to him on the floor.

Venom had fought on for one reason only. To give his master the opportunity to remember everything. That was Venom's wish and he wasn't going to let anyone stop him from reaching that goal.

Sometimes, the gentlest of souls were capable of being the most dangerous.

The tournament was bigger and grander than Kasumi could ever have imagined, though admittedly, perhaps the "multiverse" tin should have tipped her off. Indeed, the numbers were exponential; higher than multiple Dead or Alive tournaments could have garnered in a single sitting. The young woman attempted to pay little mind to it all; the very thought of all this fighting for the sake of the promise of a wish that may or may not be real to the winner. She could only imagine that the spectacle served to amuse the host, whoever he was, seeing the people he had gathered together go up against each other like toy soldiers or gladiators, puppets to dance on his whim with the promise looming over their heads.

And she was one of these said puppets, only perhaps a bit more aware than the rest of them. Of course, who knew what views on the matter were held by the fellow fighters? Perhaps what motivated them was an innocent, yet fiery, determination to prove their worth, but between them and the other participants who might have held a darker instinct waiting to be unleashed, she could only wonder what their prospective wish was. Many a time did the thought wander into Kasumi's mind that she was entirely being selfish, but perhaps she had always been selfish, and only now did she realize it, unlike when she had abandoned her clan to seek out her missing brother Hayate, never taking into account the clan's views, never taking into account how Ayane must have felt about it...

But if this was her being selfish, then she could only hope that it would be her last time, assuming she would even succeed.

Kasumi paid little mind to the voiceover of whoever spoke to them, and she had hardly noticed the upgrade in their conditions compared to when they had been making their way up the brackets before. A kunoichi like her, much like the other shinobi in general, were disciplined, and used to much less in what they would generally consider their normal, daily lives. Still, she let out a tired sigh as she sat down on one of the sofas made available to them, sitting like a prim and proper lady as she held her hands together and crossed her legs, minding her own business.

... Of course, her intentions to meditate peacefully were quickly interrupted when a girl, sporting a boyish face and a determined fire within her that highlighted her youth, approached her. The mysterious girl's imposing demeanor almost seemed to completely contrast against Kasumi's own, more reserved mien as the ninja blinked and turned to face her.

"Ah... Yes, you are correct on both accounts," Kasumi said mildly, giving a polite nod to Makoto. She felt little need to elaborate on whatever relation anyone could say she had with Zack, a man that she was familiar with through the Dead or Alive tournaments in her home world, or for that matter, her... escapades on his island, but she wanted to speak more, as to not be curt needlessly, "My name is Kasumi. It's a pleasure to meet you. And you are...?"

@The Myrmidon

Kasumi had barely gotten her response before a sense of excitement came over Makoto, her mind that the calm and composed woman sitting before her was the real deal. The way she carried herself, politely restraining herself and exercising discipline in the face of an aggressor, was the proof that the karate master needed. This woman was a true shinobi, and she was the mark to compare herself against and overcome.

"I'm Makoto Kato, master of the Rindokan martial arts dojo of Kochi Prefecture!" Shouting seemed to be the girl's favorite past time as she returned the polite nod with her own enthusiastic fist pump. Without pausing for a breath, the girl crossed her arms confidently as she spoke, "I don't want to waste either of our time, Kasumi, so here it is! You're one of the best fighters, if not, the best fighter here, so if we don't face each other in this tournament, I want to see who's the tougher one and whose style's the stronger one in a spar!"

"Now what do we got here? This place is pretty fancy. I could learn to love it here. Still, not gonna say I don't miss my cell a bit."

Cody, the fallen hero of metro city didn't seem to care as he strolled based Makaton and Katsumi. His arm resting over his head, chains dragging around him, clashing and clanging. Cody seemed like a cat with out a care as he poked around the two. However, Cody stopped as Makato's words caught his ear.

"So kid, you're telling me she's the one to beat, huh?"

Squatting down, Cody scratching his head, Cody spoke.

"You know, we've all been doing this for weeks, but I gotta say, I've been pretty bored. I'm here lookin' for a challenge, and I've only got one real challenge since it's started."

Cody had fought Makoto before. She was good, but she wasn't what Cody wanted. Still squatting, Cody's eyes met with Katsumi.

Linne took the extra bowl of noodles and a pair of chopsticks, raising some of the noodles to let them cool down, before smirking slightly at the noodle maker.

"Though are you sure you want to feed your potential opponent?"

A bit out of place for those about to eat noodles, but the sounds of something crawling on the ground could be heard. Well, that sound was coming from what was pretty much a... sentient puppet? With the messy strands of reddish hair and only a pair of arms to move around, you could say that this puppet was practically the stuff to come straight out of nightmares. Along with this puppet's appearance, another person stepped in because of it.

"Elfriede. Back into the briefcase."

Lieselotte spoke to the puppet as if it were her pet, but given on how she had gotten far enough in this tournament to begin with, it was a strangely unnerving combination. Soon enough, Elfriede listened to the girl's command and sprang back into the opened briefcase, allowing the young assassin to close up the bag.

"You're... both possible opponents."

She clearly didn't know how to casually talk to these two.

@Kaykay @thatguyinthestore

Unbeknownst to the others there was still a final fighter left, which obviously makes sense because what do you do with 11 fighters? What some might have assumed was a pile of clothes, but if you listened carefully you could hear some light snoring.

Suddenly the pile rose to reveal a a fighter who seemed to be in his late teens...and was he carrying a pillow around?

"Oh we moved...what a place."
The boy walked in like he wasn't even awake and spotted the sofa. "Comfy looking..." With a somesault he landed face first on the sofa, the pillow breaking his fall. "So comfy...zzz..."

Venom gave the boy a casual glance before getting back to his own silent contemplations.

"Yeah, she's the one to be- hey, wait a minute, didn't I already kick your butt?!"

If she was honest, Makoto wasn't sure if she had faced Cody in the past. The chained-up blonde seemed familiar, and for some reason, she felt as if she knew him to be a fairly brutal fighter... but she couldn't put her finger on where they had fought. However, her eyes lit up in recognition as she thought back to the World Warrior tournament, and a smirk came to her lips.

"Wait a minute, I remember now! You're the guy who beat that Seth weirdo, then we fought there or here and..." She then paused and the smirk on her lips disappeared, her head tilting to the side with confusion, "I... I can't remember who won our fight."

"Hey, blondie, do you remember who w- What's the big idea?!" Hearing him question Kasumi about a challenge brought the girl back to reality with a furious expression as she leaned down to glare at him, "News flash, I challenged her first, which means I get to fight her first! Get in line, and wait your turn like an honorable fighter should!"

Freedom has never felt this restricting.

It seemed like it was an endless path leading towards promises of an ultimate power-- a path paved in enemies and opponents who were consigned to a terrible defeat at the hands of a millennia-old warrior. True, they had some meat to them, but it wasn't enough. That meat only makes it easier to hack them to pieces.

In those brief moments of clarity between the high-pitched, rattling laughter and the sound of ancient steel cutting deep into red meat, Spinal tried to remember why exactly he's even here; the thought of winning something was gradually crumbling under the weight of broken, maddened thoughts. He wasn't fighting for anything remotely moral or right, but he wasn't fighting to break free of anyone's control. His actions were guided with his own free will, so what did Spinal want?

One could say he was a slave to himself for no apparent reason. That would be pretty stupid and ironic. The thrill of a stupid, discordant unlife is what fuels those ragged old bones, after all.

Even if Spinal was here for no reason, that didn't mean he wasn't deriving some kind of enjoyment in slaughtering the meatiest fighters from across the multiverse.

A high-pitched cackle called from the lower levels of the penthouse, emanating from the gym area. Spinal was surrounded by incredibly expensive gym equipment. Of course, he laughed because it was some posh-looking shit. Who wastes money on this kind of stuff?

Kasumi could only blink at the bravado that the little girl who introduced herself held confidently. One did not often did not see that magnitude of confidence and bravado, even with the fires of youth burning within her. She pursed her lips slightly, a small sign of discomfort, when Makoto seemed to praise her abilities as a powerful fighter. While she was sure anyone else receiving that compliment would be flattered, Kasumi could not take pride in that; being skilled in hurting others, even if she used her abilities to protect those she cared for... though not as often as achieving her own ends.

She fumbled briefly as she attempted to produce a response, but admittedly, the kunoichi had a difficult time thinking of what to say. She did not want to be rude and deny the girl a light spar as she had requested, but the idea was not attractive to her, disliking the idea of fighting for fighting's sake, and once again, against a little girl no less, powerful as she might be with her fighting ability. A brief wave of relief came over her when another unfamiliar man, whom Makoto was apparently familiar with to a degree, had inserted himself into the conversation, but her heart sank once again when they began talking about her strength. Kasumi did not generally fancy herself the bashful, modest type, but in situations like these, she didn't know how else to react.

"Ah... Well, I cannot say for certain, though if you were able to make it this far into the tournament, I... am sure that both of you must be quite skilled indeed," Kasumi nodded somewhat uncomfortably, before holding up her two hands after Makoto finished speaking again, "Now now, let's not be too hasty. In any case... Do you suppose we would even have enough time to spar? The hosts seem rather eager for us to fight as soon as possible, though I'm sure you would make a stimulating partner."

Stalling? A crude method indeed, but she couldn't deny that it was something she didn't really want to do, even if fighting was something she was rather good at.

"You can't judge strength by appearance and demeanor alone," Parasoul commented, taking a seat on one of the couches. She idly swirled her wine glass. "Some of the strongest people I've ever met are those you wouldn't think are very strong at all." She remembered one little girl, with metal arms and a rather cartoonish way about her, who was very powerful. Then, of course, there was Bloody Marie, the current Skullgirl, just a child, really. She took a sip of wine. For all she knew, the boy asleep on the couch was the strongest of them all.
