World Changing Ideas

"Depends on where the community is located," the woman replied, laying her winning hand down, "Geography and all that. I would prefer to have them in the center of the village, though. That way they are better protected against bandits, wild animals, and thieves."

The girl agreed. "Perfect idea." She took a deep breath, her mind wandering a bit before she glanced down at her papers. Anything else? She asked herself.

"Hmmmm.............we'd need a good, hardy plant, though," The woman said thoughtfully, "Like how the potato can live in cold climates and unenriched soil. Something good like that that's also good for the people eating it."

The girl thought for a moment. "Potatoes, Carrots, Beets, and tomatoes. That's just to start."

"We'd need something to handle bug problems as well....." the woman trailed off.

She paused. Bugs..bugs..bugs..uhh.. "Maybe some sort of greenhouse?"

"Rodents would be a problem, too," The woman added, "We'd need some kind of regulation for it. It might have to run off of solar energy, as well."

Again the girl paused. "Well..the greenhouse could be a building made of some synthetic glass type thing with solar panels for a watering system and vents for air. The glass would protect it from rodents, bugs, ect. and allow the plants to receive sunlight. The ventilation system would allow fresh air to the plants, and the solar panels would provide electricity for the watering system to water the plants."

The woman nodded, seeing it come together, "And maybe we could develop some kind of cheap version of solar panels, as they are alarmingly expensive. That would also solve other problems back home."

"Yeah. That would work very well." She tried to think of anything they could improve. "And the ventilation system would be a system of fabrics and screens to keep bugs out but let fresh air in."

The woman nodded in agreement, "Of course, they'd probably have to be cleaned every now and then, especially if you live in a desert where sand could block the screens. If anything, we should probably rely on an air conditioning system run off of the solar power. If they lived in a very cold region, the crisp air could kill the plants, so could the hot, dry air of a desert."

The girl nodded. "Of course, and I guess air conditioning would be a little better."
