I'm the demigod hero that never loses, so I best the villain and win.
 
But I'm the villain that doesn't die. You may defeat me many times, but you never kill me because it is against the moral nature of heroes to kill. And so I hide in shadow... and plot... and wait... and eventually you die, old and happy, and I do everything I was originally going to do, but this time I am successful, for you are no longer around to interrupt me.

Immediately, you win. Long-term, I win.

Long-term lasts longer than immediate. I win ultimately.
 
And a sudden unexpected contender jumps in and races towards the finish line.
 
*villainously trips the new contender*
*...into a very, very, very deep hole*
*heads to the win*
