William Ingram is a professional snowboarder and skateboarder and perhaps the most recognizable name in extreme sports. He has won two olympic gold medals and holds the X-Games records for gold medals and highest overall medal count. Ingram was born in Knoxville on September 3, 1986 and began playing ice hockey at a young age. Discovering a love of winter sports, he began snowboarding at age nine and got his first sponsorship by twelve. Shaun primarily competes in half-pipe events and in 2012 he became the first person to score a perfect 100 in the men's snowboard superpipe event at the winter X games.
Background
William was an incredibly active child, the kind who would join as many sports teams as he was able, but handily, a family coming from old money can occupy a child in many ways. Ice hockey and baseball in Knoxville before his father moved the family to New York; then came skateboarding. Diving near the great barrier reef. Snowboarding in New Hampshire. That last one really stuck and became his primary focus.
He attended college for long enough to get a qualification in Sports Science and get his father off his back, but years later after a near miss with serious injury, he realised it hadn't been such a bad idea. Getting sponsorship as a child like he did can give a person tunnel vision, which he was thankful to avoid.
Relationships:
Thomas Ingram; William's father. A property developer. He encouraged Violet to attend college after high school, telling her that a career will ensure independence. He is the reason they stopped visiting Caswell during the summer, after Violet nearly drowned and Mom had her episode.
Eloise Ingram; William's mother. Old money from Caswell, TN, outside Knoxville. A woman who suffers from her "nerves". She gets on William's case about settling down and having a family, but his sister gets it much worse.
Violet Ingram; William's younger sister. The original shrinking violet. His sister is beautiful, and talented but often let down by her introversion. Though generally quite a warm and thoughtful person, she has a passive aggressive streak a mile wide. She co-owns a trendy gallery in NYC.
Joseph Larue; William's late grandfather. He worked at the University, and seemingly spent a considerable amount of his youth travelling in Asia. He remembers being read to in his study, told stories of the far off places Grandfather visited, and learning about the stars through the massive old telescope.
Stella Larue; William's spinster aunt. Now the last remaining Larue in Caswell, she still lives in the antebellum mansion referred to as the "family home". She doesn't seem to like William's father, though will not talk about the subject; William suspects it's related to the circumstances surrounding Violet's accident.
Lydia Keane; William's manager. Dragging herself out of Hell's Kitchen gave her a take no shit attitude, and she has been an excellent manager to William for almost ten years; he has deep admiration for her.
Andres Morales; William's photographer and vlog manager. One of his best friends, William managed to get Lydia to employ Andres after they met while climbing Kilimanjaro, and their vlogs of the climb went viral.
Current
With an Instagram following over of 2 million, William is a celebrity in certain circles. Managed by a company that favour edgy and attractive extreme sports athletes, he has a number of endorsement contracts, including being "the face" of Basecamp Thermals, a company created by an old college friend of his.
Currently on a break from training for the final Winter Olympics of his career, he's headed to Caswell, TN under the pretense of speaking to the Knoxville Ice Bears, but in reality his sister is missing. His mother is losing her mind, Dad's out of the country, and it's not like Violet to abandon communication like this. She'd been helping their spinster aunt execute Grandfather's will when communication stopped, and no-one in the town can recall having seen either of them for about a week. Andres has insisted on coming with him, for vlogging purposes, and to keep William from getting into a tailspin.
Personality
Very much an extrovert, it was initially a struggle for William to do things he didn't like, and more importantly, things he wasn't immediately good at. His upbringing gave him to opportunity to pursue his passion, and it took years for him to understand how lucky he is. He's probably not quite there yet.
Competing at an Olympic level has instilled discipline and determination, but a life without any tangible hardship has convinced some small part of himself that he's invincible. Equal parts charming and cocky; a near lifetime of managing his personal brand for the public eye has kept him from becoming close with more than a few specific friends, his manager, and his family.
