What's your favorite book?

My all time favorite is prolly The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I've always been a big fan of mysteries, and I really loved the dynamics between Holmes and Watson!

My second favorite in the universe is Howl's Moving Castle. I loved that book so much that I read it twice in one day. o__o I love the way Diana Wynne Jones writes, so I adore a lot of her books.

I'll just copy and paste the list of books I've been reading through in the last five years. I'm one of those self help nut by the way.

Ps. it's a huge list don't know how to hider. fuck you

You put down both the Iliad and the Odyssey twice, yo.

(also, wow a lot of books)

Yeah by all means that list is just an ongoing cluster fuck on my computer. So sometimes the titles act as a means to catogorize exclusively and sometimes it's acting more as a venn diagram.

Also legit, I'm usually spending no more than 2 hours (max) on any given book unless I come across a problem and think back to one. Sometimes I read two-three in a fortnight back to front but only if they hook me. I'm trying to force myself to look more into textbook stuff on MIT's library, and I also watch a lot of useful shit on youtube. I also listen to many of these in form of audiobooks when I go on my walkies. I also listen to hypnosis when I sleep.

Again, i'm a self help "enthusiast".

So many books... o.o

Anyway, It's very difficult for me to pick a favorite but I do have a few books that have made impacts on life, whether it was to distract me from the problems that caused me pain or to teach me a lesson and help better myself.

Complete Tales & Poems of Edgar Allen Poe- This book was the inspiration to write my own poetry and short stories. I first picked it up when I was 9 and I finished it in a month. I've re-read it multiple times and I could recite a few of the poems by heart.

Green Angel by Alice Hoffman- If you have someone you know who is going through a rough patch, forgetting who they once were and acting out of normal because they in pain, you should have them read this book. It's almost like poetry but it is in fact a story. I had a challenging school life and books were my escape, but this book, it helped me care less about what others said about me and it inspired me to fight back against the bullying. So Green Angel will always have a special place in my heart. This book very thin and can be read in an hour at most. It's target audience is grades 4-7 but anyone can read this book.

The Stranger by Caroline B. Cooney- This book is not one of my favorites because it is amazing. I did not like the way it was written and the main character annoyed me to no end. I have it as one of my favorites because it taught me that even bubbly, selfish and just overall drama queens, could see someone hurting and would go out of their way, even if it they went about it the wrong way or did it for the wrong reasons, and try and be there for the person in pain. In that sense, it will always have a place on my book shelf.

The Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon- This series is massive, 20+ books all revolving around the same world. But the first book I read from the series was the one that I will always love and hold close to my heart. Acheron, I read this book when I was in high school and I was seriously considering taking my own life. It was when I found this book and I started reading it. I cried with sadness and joy. I screamed from anger and hate. And I laughed in happiness. It is very rare for a book to make me feel this way for more then a few minutes. Especially at that time when I felt numb to everything, almost like a walking corpse. So the book Acheron literally saved my life and helped me realize that I could be hurting right now, but there will be a time when the pain will go away. These books are Paranormal Romance, but I don't care all that much. It is my favorite series that is still ongoing and it will always be.

Looking for Alaska and The Fault in our Stars by John Green- If I could only get anyone of you to read one book I recommend, it would be Looking for Alaska. I was speeding through the books at my school library when the Librarian, who had become a friend of mine, told me to read this book. And I had to stop and slow down while I read it because it impacted me greatly. I read it twice before I had to return it and then I bought my own copy and re-read it. The Fault in our Stars has been hyped to hell and back and everyone is tired of hearing about it, as am I BUT! If you are in the mood for a book that will make you cry, whether you want to or not, whether you cry or breaking out sobbing easily, this book is for you. It made me feel, which is a very difficult thing to do and although it did not make me feel as intensely as Acheron, it is still on the short list of books that have made me feel something. Along with Looking for Alaska, The Fault in our Stars has made me feel and so they are both worthy of being my favorites.

1984 by George Orwell- This was this months choice for the Iwaku Book Club. I've already read this book. I loved and hated this book. I hated how the main character acted and the supporting female character sometimes made me want to throttle her. But, this book made me feel. It is one of the few books that leaves you unsatisfied with the ending of the story, but your fine with it. You don't mind the story ending there because their is nothing more you want to know about that horrible world where privacy is eradicated and words are torn to pieces. But it made me happy, because every book I had read up until 1984 had happy endings. This book does not have a happy ending and I liked that. Because there is no reason as to why a story based in a Dystopian world should end in a happy ending. There is no reason why it should not but I liked that George Orwell didn't lighten everything with a happy ending. There was no happy ending concerning that world and George Orwell helped me realize it and made the story, a work of fiction, seem somewhat real and that also scared the shit out of me.

I have many more, but I think these will do for now.

Reactions: Fox of Spades
The Hobbit

This holds many lessons in it. How greed corrupts entire beings, how the power of a bond can never be broken and about loyalty to friends, and having the nerve to stand up to them.

The Harry Potter Series

I grew up with this series, and as a child of a not so good home, Hogwarts became my fantasy dreamworld. I came up with my own school (I actually have a roleplay around here based on it), my own patronus, everything. So much depth to the books made me really start to think. Rowling is actually the person who lit the spark in my imagination as a child, I read her first book when I was seven. Really helped get me into theology.

Warriors: Into the Wild and Fire and Ice

This series reminds me so much of my best friend and I. Mainly because we met by these books, and sort of just became the characters in a way.

Terribly biased but I adore anything by Mercedes Lackey. I've discovered her books months ago and it's been a steep downhill from there and I'm not looking back.
That being said, I do enjoy The Innocent Mage.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a beautiful book, full of complex personalities, joy and sadness in growth, it's almost as if it was the western Clannad for me. It got the perspective of a child really well, along with the issues of racism, society, and guilt, there's a little of every character in who we are and what we know. Many chapters left me crying, and the ending of the book stood with me.

I, Claudius by Robert Graves almost made me want to become a history teacher, just to teach it not for the cold data and hard facts, but instead tell it from a human perspective and the characters that move it -- especially the depravity of mad monarchs! Incest, murders (a lot of them!), germans hurling insults, mayhem, wars, pear trees! This book has everything! Caligula's death was immensely satisfying. This book explains pretty well why one of my favorite subjects is history: It is full of amazing things... Naturally, the book is a historical novel with a few too many freedoms, particularly on the case of Livia Drusilla, but it doesn't make history any less fun when you research things and come to your own conclusion of how were people in life.

And pear trees.

Greg Bear's Forerunner Trilogy for the Halo universe. I will say without shame these are three amazing books of epic proportions I'd put along with classics. How epic? Imagine a universe with cavemen in space realizing their were gods, mechas rivaling Gundams and clouding the sky in their sheer numbers, the uniforms of Kill La Kill with power levels on the side of Dragon Ball Z, ship sizes and space battles ranging on the McFuckPlanet huge, the abominations of H.P. Lovecraft with the personality of the God of the Old Testament, Shakespearian characters rising and falling from grace with bad ass speeches in every pivotal moment, and a plot akin to The Lord of the Rings.

The beautiful thing about these books is that you don't need to know anything about the Halo universe to get into them. These books stand on their own, and you can tell the author had books on anthropology, military, mythology, religion, advanced physics, biology, with a dash of both Tolkien and Lovecraft to boot.
My favorite standalone novel (because I find it hard to rate single novels of a series against standalone novels) would have to be Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I love fantasy and I love comedy, and this book gives the best of both worlds. It doesn't take itself or anything else seriously, yet it has a solid story with actual character development. Many books fail at the good story and character development things while being wholly serious, so seeing a ridiculous comedic book manage it is pretty awesome.

I also forgot this book! It was hilarious. Started a little slow in my opinion, but it became absolutely hilarious once it got into it, and the characters are amicable, charming, and all got quirks and uniqueness in how they literally shape the world around them. It's got plenty of hysterical moments one quickly memorizes, including an appearance of DEATH from the Discworld series. =w=

Oh, and my snack books?

  • Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund. I almost have the prologue and first two chapters in memory.
  • The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett are hysterical, so they are also counted very well in it!
  • I, Mengsk, by Graham McNeil. Another book fun to read for both its violence, and its description of the Emperor's rise to power in the StarCraft universe.
  • I also have a soft place in my heart for The Art of War by Sun Tzu and The Prince by Machiavelli. Those two books help me a lot with writing, and are bad ass even as lessons.

I really don't know... but... oh well... I guess it's LOOT by Jude Watson.

I hate the author as a person, but Ender's Game is forever going to be the most important book in my entire life.

Hard choice... But I'll add one nobody has listed yet.

The Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfield is up there for me.

I can't answer this. I've read a lot of books in my time. A *lot*. Even with the ongoing eye issues, I still pick up a book and trudge through it every now and again (small print makes it difficult to accomplish, but I've been slowly getting back to being able to read small print again).

That said, I've read all of JRR Tolkien's works (including The Silmarillion) and enjoyed every last one. HG Wells' "War of the Worlds" was also a book I thoroughly enjoyed. Other books I've enjoyed over the years include Ed Dee's "14 Peck Slip" and Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" were both unexpectedly phenomenal reads.

I could go on for hours.

And not a single mention of the Belgariad? I'm disappointed in you, Iwaku.

The Malloreon/Belgariad saga by David Eddings is hands down my favorite series. Eddings set out to make every classic fantasy cliché work, and he succeeded with flying colors. The hero is farmboy who turns out to be the rightful ruler of Riva, a nation built to protect the Orb of Aldur, an immensely powerful artifact crucial to the fate of the world. Along the way he's guided by a wizened old sorcerer, marries a princess, and accidentally (and more or less unintentionally) takes over half the world. We've all heard this story before, but not the way Eddings tells it. The world is one of the most detailed I've ever seen, and every character (even the minor ones) is interesting and extremely well developed. Garion's own transition from naïve farmboy constantly asking "Why me?" to Overlord of the West and the Godslayer is amazing. While the first series, the Belgariad, is glorious, its sequel, the Malloreon, is even better, detailing the eastern half of the world we barely saw in Belgariad.

My favorite standalone novel is The Hobbit--Kind of a cop-out choice, I know, but it really is. Not sure I could add anything to what's already been said on Tolkien's storytelling, hehe.

Because I'm a huge military buff, I'm going to go with Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy. It's a techno-thriller military novel, one of his only standalone novels about a hypothypothetical world war 3 situation between a collapsing Soviet Union and NATO forces. It has a lot of technical and military jargon, some of which may turn off some readers, but if you understand it all, it's an awesome read. The character development is surprisingly deep and the action scenes are incredibly vivid. Clancy is definitely one of my go to authors.

Now on to a list.

1) Anything by Stephen King. ANYTHING. Notably, The Stand, Pet Semetary, and Under the Dome. The stand I have read at least 8 times, all 1,000 some pages of it.
2) Believe it or not, the Halo books are pretty bad ass. All of them (most of them).
3) And the best for last, the entire Redwall series. I've been hooked on them ever since I was a little kid and those books have had a huge impact on my writing. Brian Jacques was an amazing author. Not to mention the feasting scenes in the books. They'd make you hungry as hell.
