What's so bad about vaccines?

TFW Croatia's actually smarter about vaccines than America... At least from my own experiences.

There once was a Tumblr post going something like this:

The whole anti vaccine movement mainly consists of people with no knowledge of medicine going "I know medicine better than doctors" and it would be hilarious, wasn't it literally costing people's lives
You don't need vaccines, I haven't had any and I'm doing great.
Wow, such science, you sold me.
In other news, I'm still alive and therefore death is a myth.

Faith before reason makes men into boys, women into girls, the intelligent into the foolish, the wise into the selectively ignorant.

But hey, "feels are reals" culture trumps rational discourse now. It shouldn't be surprising that a movement based on "I feel" anecdotes is growing.

Who needs science when you have leeches, am I right?

Well, in some cases, leeches are still used for medical purposes, so it's not quite stuffing incense in a bird mask and telling miasma to go fuck itself.

I have nothing important to add. As someone with autism, I wish to give the middle finger to the people that act like their children having it would be the worst thing ever. Stay safe and healthy.

Their is some scientific evidence that is beginning to show that some vaccines could cause cancer and other sorts of diseases in people. While their isn't enough concrete evidence to suggest that this is in fact the case, people are freaking out like you would expect from America.

We won't know more until the generations receiving the vaccinations continue to age and can be studied more. As scientific technology has advanced, so has vaccinations, so the earlier vaccinations are more likely to cause problems. But as stated, it takes time to study the people who have been given these vaccinations to determine what is happening, if anything is happening.

Till Scientists have factually determined some vaccinations to cause problems, I will vaccinate any children I have. If it is proven that certain vaccines are causing cancer, or other types of diseases, then I won't give my children those vaccines. Though their is no real concrete evidence right now.

Just a study hear or there whose results suggest that vaccines could cause issues. When multiple experiments and observations conclude that a vaccine is a problem, then we should worry.

Uhh... What? Citation needed. There is nothing in a vaccine that should logically be even capable of causing cancer.

Almost anything can cause cancer. Talking on your phone for huge amounts of time can increase your chances of cancer. Also, read the rest of my post. I'm not citing anything, as their is nothing to cite. Just do some research and you will find things.

That... doesn't even make sense.

If there's "nothing to cite", then why is it that anyone can "do research" and "find things"? If it's that easy, how hard would it be for you to pull up an article on it?

And as for the "everything causes cancer" thing... there's a difference between scares going around that X, Y, and Z cause cancer, and actual documented research claiming that X, Y, and Z cause cancer.

Things which cause cancer are generally either radioactive or carcinogenic. It's why sunlight can cause skin cancer: Light is a form of radiation. Radio waves from phones are a form of radiation. Et cetera. Carcinogenics are mostly smoke related. Anything from smoked bacon to cigarettes can contribute.

It's why a lot of things /can/ increase risk of cancer in very small amounts, and why I'm confused that vaccines somehow would. They're neither radioactive or carcinogenic. :ferret:

The "Everything gives Cancer" statement is an exaggeration based on the number of things that can give it (year for technology and radiation!), but note two things on that:

1) Like with Autism Diagnosis rates, awareness of such things is growing. So an 'increase of causes' isn't exactly a cause of alarm, it just means better awareness as to the why.
2) It's not as if everything instantly gives Cancer. For things we do know causes it, there's studies explaining how and why it happens. It's not like a Scientist (a proper one, not your herb specialist) just randomly comes up and says "I think Vaccines cause Cancer! So they do!". At the the most it would be "I have an hypothesis that Vaccines cause Cancer. So let's try to do a study for it, and then cite and reference the hell out of it!".

But on the bright side, if Vaccines do end up causing Cancer we'll have an increase in Tennis ball sales.

What's wrong with vaccines?

Answer: Nothing. However, culture has become such where we no longer value the awesome power of technology and prefer pseudo-science to rationality.

Besides, I wasn't vaccinated and I still have autism! So, there! Settled once and for all!

As much as I'm also annoyed by the Anti-Vac movement I do feel the need to defend their (limited) intelligence here.

They aren't claiming that Vaccines are the only cause of Autism, just 'a' cause of Autism.
They'd still expect Autism to be around without Vaccines, just at a decreased rate.

That is correct-I'm using an intentionally bad argument as a joke.

I am for the MOST part an anti-vaccer.

Why? I don't even put cold medicine in my body. I'll be damned if I put all that other shit in. However, I have been vaccinated against smallpox as a kid and other ones that you have to get to go to school and what not. I got my daughter vaccinated with the TDAP and others that she will be forced to get to go to school anyway. However, for vaccines such as the flu I say no thanks. I haven't had the flu in er.... 7 or so years. Personally, I think it has made my immune system stronger by NOT getting the vaccine. Though that of course is NOT proven and it's just my opinion. I don't think people question enough what goes into their bodies. I could go in deeper, but to sum up, you have to wonder why many diseases such as cancer weren't so prominent years ago. I personally believe a lot has to do with what goes into our bodies such as many processed foods, pharmaceuticals, and even environmental factor

*shrugs*

Just my opinion. I prefer more organic things to go in my body. Personal preference.
