Arlan "Brokejaw" Craw and his not so merry band of thieves are looking for that one last job, the score of the century, the big-time hit which could see them escape this savage existence of hustling, robbery and deception. So far they'd nothing to show for their troubles except for empty pockets, bad tempers, and countless skirmishes with cutthroats, psychotics, and two-faced swindlers. Yet their luck is about to change, an old friend from Arlan's war days might have the answers to all their problems, just a short trek to hell on earth, In Chero city.
Chero
The long trail to Chero was home to nought but dirt and rock; Life had departed with the rains, leaving a dry graveyard of twisted branches the colour of bone. Only dead things out here, or desperate things Arlan thought bitterly as he scanned, for the thousandth time, the several miserable feet of dust his lantern managed claw out of the darkness. The light, such as it was and what there was of it, was essential for keeping "crushed by horse" off of the long list of mischief's a man could suffer out here....
