Duff was a Battle Priest, with a giant runed spatula for a weapon and his clan's flag on his back. (Duff's Irish...I believe)

anyways~ the rest of the quatrain or whatnot is as follows:

What does it mean that success is a dangerous as failure?
Whether you go up the ladder or down it,

that wasn't really meant to be gloomy at all. but rather, a caution against focusing too much on success, nor hope, nor on anything. nah~ just read your own interpretation for that...
