It was the big day- the day that would dictate the future of the city- and, perhaps, the world. Allison was wearing her suit, the grey and burnt orange metal plating covering her skin and shrouding her face in shadow. Silver dog tags hung around her neck, the thin engraved metal resting on her chest and glinting slightly in the fluorescent lights in the small assembly hall.

Perhaps the suit was unnecessary, but until the recruits signed their contract, there was no need for them to see her face. She glanced to her left slightly, noting the man standing in the shadow of the curtain behind her. It was Slate, one of her three long-time partners. He was also wearing his suit, but his hood was down, revealing messy yet somehow beautifully satisfying black hair.

He was scowling into the hall, arms akimbo over his kevlar-clad chest.

Allison followed his gaze to the rows of folding chairs and the few contracts and pens that had been laid on the front seats. Not many people had signed up, but perhaps that was for the best. The woman sighed, scratching at her cheek a bit. He hadn’t been exactly thrilled about being here, but she had somehow managed to convince him.

As for herself?

She was….eager. At least, that was the best way to put it. But then again, she’d always been a people person, and after hearing about the team she was to train, she was excited from not only a personal perspective but also a scientific one. Putting a team of damaged, powerful individuals together and having them work together probably wasn’t the best plan, but she was eager to see what would happen. Besides….she had enough degrees in various sciences that she was sure she’d be able to solve any problems that had arisen.

In fact, she was so excited that she had already built everyone custom suits, despite never having met them. The sign-up process was intensive, after all, and she’d been provided with not only their basic information, but also their measurements, color preferences, and more. All of those expensive gifts, in fact, were just in the next room over- a display closet, if you will- a long hall with bulletproof glass cases, each containing a suit and labeled with the alter-ego names of the possible ASA members.

Had it been an easy process? No. It certainly wasn’t without its grievances. But just seeing the looks on their faces was going to be reward enough, she figured.

Allison wasn’t given any more time to speculate this, however, because the door creaked open. The woman straightened at her podium, and smiled over at the person who entered. It was a young woman of about nineteen, with medium-length light blue hair. Not thirty seconds later, another recruit walked in. Then another. And another.

She straightened, giving each of them a welcoming smile as they all sat down. “Welcome, recruits.” She spoke into the microphone softly, her sweet voice ringing through the air in a calming manner. “I hope you all arrived here in good health. Welcome to the ASA- I’m sure by now you all know why you’re here, and you have all been accepted into the program. There’s just one more thing left before you’re officially inducted into the team.”

The woman waved her hand at the three-page contracts that they’d all been provided with. “Once you sign, you will be officially inducted into the ASA and provided with- as your contract states- a personal apartment in this very building, food, water, and a notable salary for your work. I hope that I will be able to work with you all soon. Anyone who does not sign can go back to their lives as normal citizens, effective immediately.”

With her little speech out of the way, Allison stepped away from the podium and sunk into the chair behind it and to the right, then looked over at her male companion. He was still in the shadows out of sight, and as he met her gaze, he simply shrugged halfheartedly.

In response, she stuck her tongue out at him, remembered that was unprofessional, and promptly sucked it back into her mouth. She then returned her attention to the recruits, watching them as they flipped through the contract and scanned their eyes over the fine print.

Slate was, as usual, staying out of the spotlight. He didn’t like crowds, knew the bad side of people, and knew how many of the few recruits had been offered this in place of a prison sentence.

If they had done wrong, he figured, why even extend the offer to them?

His thoughts were broken by the brown-eyed gaze of Allison, and he glanced over to her to find her looking at him questioningly. Before he could do anything, however, she followed his prior line of sight to the chairs lined in front of the stage….and the contracts.

Slate frowned a bit, ruffling his wings as the heater at his back purred to life, hitting him with a gust of abnormally warm air. The black feathers stood up a little, their glossy sheen barely visible in the dim, flickering light backstage. The curtain at his side was a big, red velvet thing- and probably heavier than his entire body, including his metal suit and the huge rifle he carried. He absently wondered how they’d even suspended the thing, cocking his head to the side a bit. His hair flopped with the movement, the black locks hanging down slightly before returning to their original position as he moved his head back.

A light squeak of the door alerted him to the start of the program, and the man peeked from behind it to view the attendees. The first to enter was a blue-haired young lady, but for as small and harmless as she seemed, Slate could already tell there was something off about her. His eyes briefly caught on the arms of a waiting prison warden outside the closing door, high-tech handcuffs dangling from his belt. He remembered this one from the files he’d been provided. She was one of the criminals.

He watched with narrowed eyes as she meandered her way to the front of the room and sunk into a chair at the corner, her thin hands snatching up the contract on the seat cushion.

Allison began speaking after a few minutes, her voice devoid of any prejudices. Slate couldn’t really fathom it. Was she really okay with letting this unfold? All these people were far too young for this, and on top of that, most of them were emotionally damaged. Why had ASA even been formed? The way it was going, it seemed that it was turning more into a murder squad than anything.

He was so consumed in his own brooding thoughts that he didn’t notice his companion was finished until his ears caught on the unfolding of papers. Slate shook himself from this state of mind and looked over to Allison, noting that she was now sitting down and looking over at him. The man shrugged, and she stuck her tongue out in response before quickly pulling it back in and flushing a bit.

Slate couldn’t help but smirk at that. At least his old teammates were around.

Double doors loomed in front of her, and behind her was the reception room. Civilians milled about, waiting in chairs and talking to tired, smartly-dressed and coffee-fueled receptionists. She tried to keep her head down, but her vibrant blue hair was already a point of interest and the fact that she had a prison warden at her side and handcuffs on her wrists wasn't helping her blend in.

The whirr of the handcuffs unlocking didn’t settle her nerves, just gave her something to take them out on- her own wrists. As they loosened and allowed her hands freedom, Aiden immediately dug her nails into her arms, staring ahead at the door.

Behind it lay the possibility of permanent freedom...or a life of dancing to the government’s feeble whims. It really was a two-edged sword.

She sucked in a deep breath and stepped inside after a moment's hesitation, ignoring the prod between her shoulder blades from the warden at her back. Before her lay an expanse of seats, with the front row occupied by paper and pens.

Aiden took her seat, staying silent with her head down as the other recruits filed in and filled the remaining chairs. The paper clutched in her hands was a sort of contract, and up on the stage was the Huntswoman herself- one of four original heroes, and one of three that would be, according to the recruitment letter, training the members of the ASA to fight crime. Huntswoman spoke once all the saved seats were filled, and the woman barely paid attention to the words she spoke as she stared down at the three-page contract.

Once Huntswoman was finished speaking, Aiden flipped the paper and scanned her eyes over the paper.

"Greetings, participant. The American Superhuman Association (or ASA) welcomes you with open arms and hopes that you have a fulfilling time here, working along with the American government to ensure a bright future for our country. You have been accepted into our group for your powers and your potential to help citizens that are not superhuman. While staying here, you will be provided with all your necessities, which include but are not limited to: free medical care, a personal apartment, a $6,000 monthly salary, food, clothing, and water, provided you stick to the rules and conduct yourself with mannerisms that befit a member of ASA.

You will be required to work together with people of all sorts of ethnic and social backgrounds, and we hope that for most of you it will become like a family in time. We realize that some of you have engaged in and been convicted of criminal activity in the past. If that is the case, consider signing this contract a full and permanent pardon.

Under the watchful eye of three world-renowned heroes, you will learn how to fully control your powers and use them to fight the rising crime rate through hands-on training and field work shifts. We hope that within a few years, you will be ready to be the new generation of heroes.

We will not be held accountable for any and all injuries you suffer on the job. Should death occur while working for us, ASA will fund a funeral in your honor. If you decide to leave ASA, further use of powers, regardless of motive, will be treated as any other superhuman citizen- with a fine and possible jail time. Any criminal activity while working for ASA will result in immediate termination."

Of course, there was a lot more fine print than that, but it was all basically saying the same thing as the introduction. The only difference was more legal terms, using words that Aiden didn’t completely understand but didn’t really care to, either.

She signed the paper with her messy cursive, closed the thin contract and rested it in her lap, and finally sat back and looked up. This was not her ideal life, but it was better than jail. Her blue hair fell over her shoulders in a mane of thick, brightly-colored locks, drawing attention to that more than to the fact that her dog tags were, as usual, hidden in her shirt. The only thing calling her out on that fact was the thin silver chain resting on the skin of her neck, disappearing under the collar of the black fabric of one of the few shirts she owned.

Aiden then turned her attention to the rest of the inhabitants of the assembly hall, blue eyes scanning over each individual in quiet scrutiny.

Matthew Michael Volt

"Someone's shy and it ain't me."
Location | Not a courthouse.

Time | You tell me.
Weather | Least of my concerns...
Well, this was probably better than assault charges. Knowing Jerome, he’d probably try to push for attempted murder in court too. All the kids were too scared to talk. Trying to defend his innocence would have been a bloodbath with the shitty public defender he got saddled with. Matthew Volt would have to keep reminding himself of that as he was led into the headquarters of the ASA. He spared a glance down to the handcuffs he had on, a small sigh escaping him. He was innocent, he'd keep telling himself that. He wasn't the one who acted out. Jerome just got struck by instant karma, and waiting for him to age out of the system was a cheap trick that had gone unanticipated. His foot lightly tapped on the floor as he waited for his own officer to uncuff him. Didn't seem like he was trying to beat the race with the blue haired chick. He heard the click just as the girl went into the room they'd been held outside of. "Well, it's been a real pleasure talking with you, sir. Hopefully we'll meet again without such a suspenseful atmosphere." He flashed a cheeky grin and quickly skirted through the double doors before the officer had a chance to poke him in the right direction like the other officer had done with the girl.

Paperwork. His fingers tapped lightly against each chair he passed by as he idly decided on where he'd wind up sitting at. Front and center would peg him as too eager, too far from the center would peg him as anti-social or a non-obligatory criminal, and he could already feel the jolt of anxiety sparking to life as he found himself conflicted on how he'd make himself appear to everyone that he'd wind up working with. Sharp blue eyes scanned over the woman at the podium, Huntswoman. She seemed eager in a way that made his stomach twist, as he couldn't see the expression she wore behind her mask. He could have sworn he'd seen movement behind the heavy curtains, but what-whoever it was wasn't going to pop out anytime soon. He found a seat three chairs down from Blue, and picked up the contract and pen. As Huntswoman gave her speech, the idle twirling of his pen couldn't be missed. It was a well-practiced motion by now.

The pen slowly stilled as he red along in the contract, a frown gracing his face as he stumbled across a little line that actually managed to strike a nerve. '...we hope that for most of you it will become like a family in time.' Who the hell wrote up that bullshit? Can I slap them? Eh, probably a bad idea... Don't prove all the assholes right. His annoyance remained contained in a special little box, and he decided exactly how he'd play. As he finally moved to sign the paper, he allowed his expression to slide into something slightly more determined. Of course, he maintained some of the uncertainty, and played up the hopefulness in his gaze. Compared to the heroes that would be training him, he was just a young and dumb kid with absolutely no idea what he was getting himself into. The naive little orphan looking to do some good for the world... He wondered how many details were in his file. He just might be able to sell that story if they left out a couple of the rough patches. His hopeful gaze drifted back up to where Huntswoman he seated herself, catching her with her tongue sticking out at someone who was still trying to be sneaky.

He stood up and walked over to the woman. “So, uh, where would you like these once we’re done?” He asked with a sheepish smile. “I look forward to working with both of you.” His sharp gaze flicked to the curtain and fixed on the spot behind the curtain that he was sure someone was hiding behind. The pen still twirled between his fingers. He’d make all this work out. If anyone tried to land a harmful hand on him, then he’d at least go for as much collateral damage as possible before the lights went out for good.

Coming through the set of double doors was a quite a sight for anyone that was looking. A man in nothing but a white tank top, raggedy old jeans, and scuffed boots. The man had large devices that enveloped his hands that were chained together, the devices were emitting smoke that sank to the ground and cooled the floor. The lower half of his face was covered in something that someone could only guess was a muzzle due to all the muffled muttering that came from him.

Behind him in tow, was an officer that held a device in his hand, he pointed to a vacant seat, and the restrained man gave the officer a raised brow and raised his restraints up in front of him. The officer rolled his eyes and pulled out a key and released the man’s hands from the device, it hit the floor with a loud thud that could be felt throughout the room. “Do me a solid, and sit down Ashe” the officer spoke with a rugged tone, but there was some sincerity in it, showing that who ever this officer was, he had to of known Ashe quite well.

Ashe shook his head, and brought his hands to his face, his fingers were cold, and trying to get them to move was a slow process, but he could manage. He picked up the papers and pen and sat down, he looked to the officer that stood next to him, and pointed at his muzzle next. The officer shook his head and gave him a stern look. “I’m not taking that mask off till you sing the paper bud” he said pointing to the bottom of sheet. The young lad didn’t even bother to read the fine print before signing the bottom with horrendous chicken scratch then scoffed audibly through the muzzle and tilted his head exposing the lock. The officer sighed and unlocked the mask, and took it off his face. Ashe rolled his jaw a few times touching scratching his chin, before turning to see the officer picking up all the restraints and turning to walk out. “ so you’re just gonna leave? Guess I’ll be seeing you around, George” he spoke up finally, groggy yet rough voice.

The officer kept walking out “let’s not hope for that, take care kid”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The man laid back in his chair, slumped back. He hadn’t paid too much attention to the huntswoman, he knew who she was, what she was capable of, he wasn’t too keen on the whole hero thing in general. Being monitored while just practically living? Ashe certainly didn’t need big brother holding his hand, if it wasn’t for the government getting involved in everything, he wouldn’t have been separated from his family, and maybe so many others as well. It was already bad enough with the dog tags.

His eyes scanned the room, there was this blue haired chick that stood out to her the most, mostly because she had an officer just like he had when he first came in. Maybe she had the same story as he did he wondered. Then his eyes fell on the man who went up first to ask the huntswoman something about passing in the papers.

Do we pass these in?! ” He called out too lazy to even get up.

So this was it.

As Liam continued to wander almost aimlessly towards the ASA building, he couldn’t help but keep repeating that phrase to himself. ‘This was it?’. To him, the building looked average, inconspicuous, almost boring. Maybe that was intentional, maybe he wasn’t appreciating for what it was, or maybe reality would never match someone’s imagination when given unfettered access to hopes and dreams. To be fair, he hadn’t known exactly what he had been expecting, so he was already setting himself up to fail when it turned out it was just some large skyscraper looking building in the center of Cliffside. It could have been built on a volcano spewing rainbows, and Liam would have found something disappointing with it.

Upon making his way inside, and summoning the will to actually ask the receptionist for directions, he found himself following the woman to the meeting room where they were to be inducted. The receptionist gave a slight wave to usher him forward, before giving a small nod and leaving to return to her duties. Liam thanked her, and saw that there were a few others preparing to enter the room. He was more than a few feet from them, but he could see the insignia of Law Enforcement from where he was, not to mention cuffs and even...a muzzle? He would be working alongside criminals? Liam closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath, forcing his anxiety down to the pits of his chest. He knew this, it wasn’t a surprise...still it was somewhat of a shock seeing it for himself.

He steeled himself and took a step forward, and the moment he did his anxiety raised again. What were these people like? Had they killed anyone? Were they like the criminals on TV and movies? Would they try to kill him if he said anything stupid? Who were the people in charge if even criminals were willing to work for them? Would the people in charge ask him to talk about himself? Would he have to talk to the others? What if he said something stupid? Was this a mistake? Would this all come back to haunt him? Could he leave now and never come back? What would the people who saw him come in say? What were they saying about him right now? If he didn’t say anything, would they mock him?

These, and many more questions flooded Liam’s mind until he couldn’t take it anymore. Reaching into his jacket pocket, a jacket that was covering up a rather bulky sweater mind you, he pulled out a small water bottle. As he popped the top a bit, the smell of liquor assaulted his nostrils before he took a huge swig from it, allowing the burning sensation at the back of his throat to overcome the mind numbing questions plaguing him. Before long, he felt his cheeks flush and the anxiety that constantly assaulted his senses succumbed to a more confident Liam.

To be honest, he couldn’t even remember what liquor was in there, due to them all tasting the same at some point. Carrying a flask was too obvious, but a simple water bottle could throw off suspicion for a little while at least. As a few others made their way in, Liam followed, pushing into the room and taking a quick glance around. Despite his liquid courage, he still found himself sitting a few seats away from others, watching as a woman came up and gave a quick little intro to those sitting around. He turned his eyes downward at the pieces of paper on the desk. He read them from front to back, but a bit of it was lost on him. Was 6 grand a month a lot? Having an apartment of his own sounded nice, but what else would it cost him? Become a family in time? Liam only had his own family for reference, he honestly hoped they became nothing like them. He knew they had only been trying to protect him...maybe? They had yet to really come after him, so part of him doubted that and wondered if they were simply scared of him.

Still, he had long ago made his mind up that he was going to do this, despite the little nagging questions in the back of his mind barely held back by the alcoholic buffer. Even as he looked around and saw a number of the people signing the papers, how their eyes held an aggressive nature, how their stature seemed to portray predators looking for prey. Maybe he was reading into it, but then again, a number of them were essentially being forced into this if the cuffs were any indication. Here he was, a voluntary member of the ASA looking to escape life in a basement, but was this what he really wanted?

Liam squeezed his eyes shut, reaching into his breast pocket and taking yet another drink. Once again, the warmness overcame his incessant insecurity, and he picked up the pen to sign the paper. His cursive was pretty, almost to the point of being overly feminine, but then again he had had plenty of time to practice. When he was done, he looked up to see what the others were doing and noticed one of the criminally involved standing up to the woman and asking what she wanted done with the papers. It was really only in that moment that he took enough time to look at the woman who had been addressing them.

Donned in what could only be her ‘hero’ gear, he could only guess that it was a cool style. He would be the first to say that he didn’t have the best fashion sense and what he considered awesome was not going to fly with a number of other people. Still, he liked the design of it, and he noticed the cannons attached to the underside of her arms. Were they guns? Utility items? Some other purpose to amplify her power? Maybe he would be able to look at something like that later, pull it apart and learn everything about it. That would at least keep his mind busy. The man asking the question was younger...at least Liam thought he was younger. His clothing, all loose fitting and such didn’t help him narrow the age by body type. At the very least, he was asking the same question Liam was wondering, so that helped him out indirectly.

Then another man seemed to mirror the same question, although in a laid back fashion, with more than an exaggerated laziness to his presentation. The one with the face mask when he had been brought in, Liam couldn’t help but stare slightly. What had warranted such treatment? Was it a touchy subject? Was it possible this man was more dangerous than anyone in the room? What was his ability? Liam found himself staring, and blushed slightly as he rushed to look away. It was then his eyes fell to a single line in the contract.

’Under the watchful eye of three world renowned heroes, you will learn…’

Three? Liam assumed that the woman at the front was one of them...but where were the other two? Better yet, who was the woman at the front? His parents had done everything they could possibly do to keep the superhero, or freaks as they called them, from Liam's public knowledge. It was only a fluke he had heard about the ASA to begin with, so he wasn't entirely up to date with the who's who. He wanted to ask, and found himself standing before he knew what was going on. As he stood, it only dawned on him that the man who had gone up to hand in his paper had addressed two, but he didn’t see a second one. Was he behind the curtain, and if so, why? Better to focus on a single question at this point in time.

”Excuse me.” Liam started, his voice slightly unsure but gaining confidence the more he spoke. “It says that we’ll be trained by three world renowned heroes...who would those people be, and by extension, with all due respect, who might you be?”

fianna chambers

Songbird of the Slums

The songbird known as Fianna stared at her reflection in the shiny elevator doors as they started to make their way up to the ASA headquarters. Her blonde straight bob was impeccable and her red peacoat still immaculate eventhough its been worn for a couple of years. Her heterochromatic eyes: one grey and one yellow orange, were probably her best feature, but now hey were hidden under a pair of big dark sunglasses, anxious if not worried. She would have looked perfect if only her gloved hands wasn't shackled and her beautiful mouth wasn't gagged. Well, we can't have it all..

"Are you sure about this?" The officer beside her suddenly piped up, perhaps unable to bear the silence around them. "You know I can still help you. I can call some of my buddies or pull some strings for you-"

Fianna looked at the officer beside her and shook her head repeatedly. She didn't have to use her owl eye to see that he's worried and scared for her. Maybe its because he knows something I don't? Well whatever the reason was, she appreciates it. She also appreciates that her dear old client wanted to save her from all of this drama but she already thought things through. This was her way to salvation and no matter what happens, there's no way in hell she's going to run away from it.

It seems her dear friend finally understood that she didn't want any help and soon, they arrived at their designated floor and entered the heavy double doors.
------------------
As soon as she sat down on one of those empty chairs and signed the contract without even bothering to read it, her dear officer friend was quickly by her side to free her cuffed hands. The officer was about to remove her gag and for a moment, she sensed his hesitation. A flash of hurt crossed her eyes but she quickly hid it away with an empty stare. Of course her dear friend would be hesitant. After all, her voice was the reason why she got into this mess. If only she didn't scream so loud that an entire building's glass windows shattered and punctured a couple of people who was walking down the busy steet then maybe she wouldn't be there.

But its all in the past now and the officer seems to understand that.

"Finally" Fianna breathed, her soft and tempting voice now reaching everyone's ears as the gag was finally off, fully aware that some turned their heads to look at her. "You have no idea how I missed talking. Thank you, Paul."

Leaning in closer, she whispered "If only there wasn't people around, I've already given you a kiss"

"Now, why don't you be a good boy and-,"

Before she could even finish her sentence, the boy who she was sitting next to suddenly spoke up and cut her off, resulting for her dazed officer friend to wake up from her spell.

Damn it

Clicking her tongue out of annoyance and completely turning her chair around to ignore the officer, she looked at the boy beside her and spoke up with a voice as sweet as honey "Now, now, sweetie. Didn't your mother teach you that its rude to ask someone their name without introducing yourself first?"

She then stood up and removed her sunglasses, squinting a little bit as she looked around the room. Besides from the woman on the podium, there's a girl with blue hair sitting a couple of chairs away from her and a rugged guy in a tank top. There's also a guy holding the contract and someone hiding behind the curtain.

"Proper manners are a must in this line of work. After all, we don't want the higher ups to be mad at us"

"Anyway..." extending her gloved hand towards the boy for a handshake, she then smiled "I'm Fianna Chambers, Songbird of the Slums and you are?"

Benjamin Chen
Location: ASA Headquaters
Time: 11:00 AM
Weather: Perfect for a nice walk

The engine of the car silently hummed as the vehicle slowly came to a stop in front of the building. Two armed men stepped out of the vehicle first followed by a heavily bundled man. The two men bore police insignias like the officers who had arrived before them though they were more escort than guards. The bundled man was covered from head to toe. He wore a sweater with his hood pulled over his head, long trousers, boots, gloves, and even a scarf that covered most of his face. Neither escort nor escortee wasted much time getting into the building.

Benjamin had been informed several months in advance of how the government was working on putting together something of a superhero team composed entirely of mutants. As he was already under the care of the government, it was no surprise to him that he was being scouted as one of the potential members of this new team. His father, protective as he ever was, had been against the idea that his son should join this team. On the other hand, Benjamin was very eager to take part in the program if only so that he could explore the world outside the facility. After all, for the majority of his life, he had only been able to see the world through computer screens and books.

The mutant quietly walked through the building behind his escorts. As the group approached the double doors, Benjamin noticed several official looking individuals waiting outside. By their equipment and uniform, Benjamin assumed all of them had to do with law enforcement in some way or another. Benjamin's train of thought was interrupted by one of his guardians gently elbowed him and nodded towards the door his partner was holding open. Realizing that both officers were waiting for him, Benjamin sheepishly apologized and quickly slipped into the room.

Upon entering the room, Benjamin took a seat furthest away from everybody else. From what he could see, the mutations of everyone else in the room were subtle. Some had special colored skin and marks, some had additional limbs, some had weird hair color though Benjamin wasn't sure if those were mutations or simply hair dye. Regardless, the fact that these mutants could still partially pass as humans made Benjamin self-conscious of his own mutation. He nervously adjusted his clothings to ensure that none of his smoke like body leaked through and prayed that none of the other individuals in the room would notice.

Turning his attention to the stage, he listened to the armored superheroine's welcoming speech before flipping through the pages of the contract in his hand. It had the standard stuff of a regular contract, promise of payment, housing, and other essentials in exchange for services in what he assumed would be super hero work. Of course, should a potential recruit reject this offer or leave the organization, usage of their powers would be strictly prohibited. In short, it was nothing he had not heard about before he got here.

Benjamin tilted his head at the wording of the contract. He never considered his abilities as anything supernatural. They were as natural to him as walking. Nobody would call the ability to walk a superpower even if they were compared to somebody who could not. His mutated appearance did emphasise his difference from everybody else but never in a supernatural way.

Then again, everything is perspective I guess, Benjamin thought to himself as he signed his signature onto the paper, sealing his fate. He looked up to see one of the other recruits already making his way up to the stage to greet the heroes. The others, including Benjamin, remained seated, some of them already beginning to greet each other as they waited for the next step.

Myla pulled up in front of the building on her motorcycle and looked up at it. She shivered to herself as she looked up. No helmet, but her coat was thick leather and underneath it was a yellow-gold sweater and underneath that was the top she would be wearing with the others. She'd never seen the headquarters building before, but while it was impressively large, it was unimpressively...everything else. It looked pretty plain. She supposed that was the idea.

Rather than take the elevator, she decided to give her heart a bit of work and climbed the stairs. Myla sometimes wondered if her mutation included enhanced stamina, since no one knew what her muscles were like, but in truth she chalked up her endurance and strength to good old-fashioned exercise. Either way, she got to the right floor in a few minutes but well after everyone else had shown up. She looked at everyone else there and...not bad. A brooding emo with angel wings in the corner, a couple very pretty girls - one with hair not too different from her natural hair color (though now it was dyed bright red) - a man who smelled kind of drunk, a smoky guy, and a girl in black and orange armor who looked pretty excited for them all to be there.

"Sorry I'm late," she said and unzipped her jacket, hanging it up on a hook near the table. She then stripped off her gold sweater, revealing more of her pale skin and the abs underneath. Her top was a short-cut t-shirt over a black sports bra. "Took the stairs. So excited to get started - paperwork?" Myla looked down, skimmed the contract for about ten seconds, and signed without a second thought. "Alright! When do we start bashing heads?"

"Some of us are still reading," came a new voice.

---

Emily had taken the elevator around the same time Myla was jogging up the stairs. When she emerged there in her black coat decorated with silver she sat quietly and glowered at everybody. Well, it looked like she was glowering - it wasn't easy to tell for sure as she was hiding her eyes behind her shades - but what she was really doing was trying to check everybody out. Lot of criminals here, she thought to herself. Anyone tries to steal my shit and I'll give 'em a heart attack. Does that patch of sentient fog over there even have a heart? Don't think I'd wanna take him in a fight. My one ace in the hole could be useless against him. She was momentarily derailed when she saw Fianna. Wow. Beautiful. Blonde. Oh Gods please be gay.

Then the door to the stairs opened and woman with obviously dyed hair strolled in. She took the stairs? Was she trying to show everyone up or was she really just that fit? Emily soon got her answer when the young woman practically stripped in front of her. Wow. She could be in the Olympics. Decent biceps, epic abs...Emily mentally put Fianna's head on this girl's body and felt her cheeks heat up. Whoever she was, she was pretty confident as she watched her sign the contract without even reading it. She wondered what power she had that made her so cocky.

"Some of us are still reading," she quipped at her coolly, going over the details herself. She didn't trust a government that demanded contracts. Just like she didn't trust one that demanded she wear tags at all times. Was a little too...Holocaust-y. The more she read, though, the more it just seemed like they were covering their asses. No responsibility for death or injury, follow these rules, failure to comply will terminate the arrangement...it sounded more and more like she was signing an apartment lease than a salaried government position. Finally, she reluctantly signed, her hand going to her neck and clutching her mother's good-luck pendant as she did so.

Allison sat and watched as the last of the recruits signed their papers, noting silently how differently they all acted. Some were shy, some were bold, and others were simply confident in a quiet way. She had, admittedly, been a bit annoyed when the officers of some of the recruits actually ended up walking in with their charges and disrupted her speech with their chatterings.

Soon enough, though, she was done with the speech and they were gone, and the hall was just left with a sprinkling of recruits that were finishing the signings of their contracts and settling back- or, in the case of a couple of recruits- speaking to her. One woman, the latecomer, asked when they were going to start bashing heads, and she simply snickered a bit, gave a vague answer along the lines of ‘soon enough’, and then moved on.

The woman stood and made her way back to the podium, addressing the standing man first. “You can go ahead and give them to me-” Just as she reached for them, though, a gust of wind tore the contract from his hands and carried it swiftly back behind the curtain. “....or he’ll take them, I guess.”

Allison shot a small, scolding glare over her shoulder, to which Slate just offered a small grin. His fingers flicked, and the rest of the room’s occupants were relieved of their contracts in a similar manner.

Show-off.

“In any case, I look forward to working with you as well.” She offered the young man a smile- choosing to ignore the one that had shouted, since he had already been answered by Slate’s gesture- then turned her attention to the shy voice that was piping up from behind him. She recognized him easily enough from his file (she’d ended up memorizing every one of them), but before she could reassure him, Finna stepped in.

Her voice was sweet and manipulative, and Allison sighed a bit at her words. She was nice-sounding enough, for now...but with her, no one could ever tell if she was being truly friendly or just trying to get something. The woman interjected after Liam answered, moving the conversation in the room swiftly along. They would all have time to visit soon enough, but for now she wanted to get them settled. “To answer your question, Liam, the three heroes you will be training with are myself, Ebon, and Gravita. My codename is Huntswoman...” Her voice started to rise a bit, catching the attention of the others. “…but when not on duty, you may all call me Allison.” With those words, she reached back and pressed lightly on one of the metal panels on her neck, causing the visor and hood to fold down and reveal her true face.

Light freckles decorated her skin, and her glasses were balanced delicately on the bridge of her nose. Auburn-orange hair spilled down her scalp and ended around the middle of her metal-plated torso. She offered the room’s occupants a warm smile, “I apologize for the coolness of the introduction. It was simply too risky for someone who has not signed the contract to know the true identities of myself and my companions.” Allison once more glanced behind her, hoping that Slate had emerged from his hiding place, but had no such luck. He was hanging back for now, it seemed.

After those words, she straightened a bit, her spine clicking with the motion, and stepped off the stage. “Now, if you would all follow me…” She started to lead the way to the side door, and, once she was sure everyone was up and following, opened the door. They were greeted by a long hallway lined with embedded glass cases. And in those glass cases?

Expensive-looking suits, all tailored to fit and made of high-quality material. They were on dressed mannequins, turning slowly to show off every angle. Above each case resided a silver plaque, labeling each with the codename of her new charges. “I hope this isn’t too early to show you, but...I have designed suits for each of you.” Allison stepped into the hall and turned to face her little group, an almost giddy smile on her face, and waved her arm as if to show off her handiwork. “Every one has been tailored to fit you and match your powers and fighting styles. If they need to be changed at all- even if it’s just the coloring- please don’t hesitate to let me know.”

Behind the group, she caught Slate raising an eyebrow at her, and she simply shrugged one shoulder. After all, she was excited for this...and he wasn’t going to take that from her!

Even as Allison began to speak, more people were filtering in. Slate’s light eyes scanned over each newcomer, recalling their files and trying to remember the details of their coming.

He’d almost forgotten how many criminals there were.

Names scrolled through his mind as each person passed. None of these people looked like hero material, and it was setting him on edge. Was the government really that desperate, or were they simply wanting to experiment, see how far they could push before a calamity happened?

Maybe he was being too pessimistic, but looking at the ragtag group behind the curtain wasn’t helping him envision a peaceful future. How many of these people had accepted the offer simply because they wanted out?

Slate huffed a bit and watched as a few of the recruits began to stand up and speak. The first one- Michael, was it?- seemed to know he was there, his eyes flicking to the curtain that the hero was concealing himself behind.

Clever, this one.

He asked where he should leave the papers, his words momentarily interrupted by the drawling voice of another young man behind him, asking the same question. No harm in showing off a little, the man supposed, before these kids surpassed his coolness factor.

Slate flicked his fingers out and then pulled them back, sending a small gust of wind to pick up the contracts and bring them back to him before Allison could take it from them. He grinned cheekily at her when she cast a look back at him, then lifted the papers now in his hand up and waved them in a teasing manner before he collected the rest.

Then, she was introducing herself. She actually revealed her face to them this soon?

Well….what did he expect, really? Allison was always overly excited for things like this. He didn’t really understand it, but he wasn’t going to rain on her parade if she wanted to buddy up to them already. Slate finally revealed himself- sort of- when his companion began to lead the group from the room into the neighboring halls, sticking to the rear with his shoulders rolled back and his head up.

Where was Gravita? it wasn’t like her to be late, and they hadn’t heard anything from her.

Idly, he hoped she was alright, but he soon had to snap back to attention when Allison made the announcement about the suits. His eyes drifted up to the glass cases lining the hall, and even he had no choice but to let his mouth fall agape. Was she serious? All this for something that might not even work out?

No wonder her workshop had eighteen times the normal amount of discarded coffee cups lying about. His eyes met hers, and she seemed to notice his shock, as she replied with a shrug and a wide grin.

He’d always known she was crazy.

The blue-haired woman watched as her contract was pulled away from her, and tried her best to keep the quirk of a smile off of her lips at the motion that had accosted the paper on its way behind the heavy velvet curtain of the stage. Someone was back there, and she had a sneaking suspicion as to who it was. The others had started to talk, and secretly she was glad that they weren’t addressing her. Normally, she was much more talkative, but for now she wanted to test the waters.

It wasn’t as quiet as she expected, but then again, she didn’t know exactly why she thought it would be quiet at all. She was surprised, however, at the fact that most of the group seemed to be in a similar position to her. Maybe she could find a common ground with some of the people here- or at least some sort of understanding.

Aiden couldn’t help but feel the distrustful glances she was getting from a few of the room’s occupants- one woman in particular, wearing shades and a long coat- seemed to be looking with distrust at her and the rest of her criminal peers.

What the hell was her problem?

Her eyes were caught next by the man sitting on the other side of the room, seemingly examining the others like she was. It was hard to tell, though, considering that his entire body was some sort of smoke-like substance that showed a bit even through the simply absurd layers of clothing he was wearing. That one was interesting. Aiden had seen quite a few people with major mutations before, but this was on a whole new level.

She was shaken from her assessment of the room’s occupants when Huntswoman stepped toward the edge of the stage, raising her voice as if to make sure she had captured the attention of the room. Then, she announced her true name, and as if it were perfectly natural, revealed her face. The woman beamed at them with a sincere warmth that was almost sickening to Aiden. There was no way she was being real.

Then why weren’t her alarm bells going off? The blue-haired woman squinted a bit, examining Allison in quiet scrutiny. Usually, she could tell when someone was trying to trick her, but this one was….tough.

Finally, though, they were moving, the small group trailing out into the smooth hallway beyond the inconspicuous single door.

Her initial reaction was of confused surprise as her brain registered just what the hallway held. They really had gone all-out, hadn’t they? Aiden stopped behind the rest of the group, stretching up on her tiptoes to see over their heads and searching for her designated suit- there it was. Form-fitting, with blue accents and a dark-tinted helmet? It was like she had designed it herself.

“Crazy stalkers, much?” she muttered under her breath, finding the negativity in the situation even though she was just a little bit excited for it.

To say Liam was a sheltered child or, even an adult, would be an understatement. There was a reason he felt a compulsive need to be at least a little buzzed to get through normal social interactions with people. Standing up and asking a question in front of people, regardless of number, was always something he did either with intense deliberation, or in a spontaneous act that was performed before he knew what was happening. He had felt his question was fair and not unreasonable, yet someone still pointed out a fault in his logic.

"Now, now, sweetie. Didn't your mother teach you that it’s rude to ask someone their name without introducing yourself first?"

Liam looked to his left, seeing the woman sitting there and feeling both his chest and throat tighten. She was beautiful, and her voice was soft and smooth. He immediately felt flustered, and instinctively his hand went to reach for his drink but he stopped himself at a mere flinch. That was too much of a giveaway, and he would prefer to not do that in front of these people...at least not yet. She had a point, but he had thought the lady at the front would already know his name. After all, they were the ones selected, they should have information on the attendees, right? As the woman stood up, she was roughly the same height as Liam, which made him somewhat relieved. Had she been taller, he felt he might have just sat down and avoided eye contact for the rest of the presentation.

When she removed her sunglasses, the first thing he noticed was the different eye colors. Part of her mutation, or just natural? Didn’t matter, as her eyes seemed to wander away from him for a moment, something he was incredibly grateful for even if he wasn’t out of the metaphorical fire. How was he supposed to react? What was normal in this situation? Was he acting weird? Did he stand out? Could she smell the booze on his breath? Was it really bad? He wasn’t even buzzed, it couldn’t be bad yet, right? Was she appraising him? The others? Oh man, he hadn’t even really looked at the others too much, was he missing something? Was he already judging people? What should he do?

Everything in his body was screaming to grab another drink, and it took enough effort for Liam to resist the urge that he completely blanked on what she said next. By the time he had managed to clue back in, she was introducing herself as Fianna Chambers, the Songbird of the Slums, and extending her hand for a shake. It was in this moment that Liam was acutely aware of how clammy his hands were as he wondered if he could die right in this moment. Get the moment over, sit back down, avoid stares, get a drink...a big one...move on. Liam thought to himself as he wiped his hand on the side of his pants before lightly grasping her hand in what could otherwise be considered a weak grip, considering he didn’t want to squeeze too tightly or shake too vigorously.

”I’m...uh…” For a moment, Liam blanked on his own name as he stood there holding her hand for a moment before mentally body checking himself into a wall and continuing. ”Liam Ludiker.” He spouted quickly, his eyes downcast the entire time. The moment he stated his name, he sat down and once again resisted not only the urge to pull his drink from his breast pocket, but to pull his hood up and die in his seat. That was weird, I was weird, she thinks I’m weird...fuck fuck fuck fuck Liam thought to himself as the woman at the front got around to answering his question. He looked up as she addressed him, appreciative of any interruption from his intensely uncomfortable situation.

Ebon, Gravita and Huntswoman. He had heard of them in passing, not enough to have recognized them for sure, but his parents had often spoke of the other heroes like they were some kind of plague on mankind. When she released her hood and revealed her face, saying they could call her Allison off the clock, Liam wasn’t sure to be relieved or even more anxious if that was possible. True identities, alter egos, this felt like it should be standard fare, but Liam felt like he was in some kind of movie or show, and honestly didn’t know what to call himself should he have to pick his own name. While he was thinking on this, Allison asked for them to follow her into the hallway. Thankful for another reason to move and not dwell on this thoughts, he promptly followed and was lead into a hallway with glass enclosures filled with suits on either side. They were suits designed for them, based on their powers, fighting styles and preferences apparently. How did they know that much about them? Maybe the others, since most seemed to have some sort of criminal record, but Liam wasn’t an outlier. In fact, he barely knew the outside world aside from what he was able to piece together from his school days and what his parents deemed to tell him.

As everyone more or less moved to their suits, with the blue haired girl commenting on the stalker style of all this, Liam couldn’t help but agree. When everyone’s eyes were drifting towards their suits, he took out his bottle and had himself a pretty large swig. It burned, enough to make his eyes water slightly as he tapped it off and gave it a swish. There was only a small bit left, he was already burning through his reserve for the meeting. Hopefully he would get the chance to top it off before long. Once that was out of the way, he looked through the plaques before getting to his name.

Liam Ludiker
MindGame

MindGame. The name he had given himself for lack of anything better. Now he was worried it might be a bit too pretentious, or that people wouldn't take him seriously. Nothing to do about it now though, he would just have to power through. As the liquor started filtering through his body, having finally ingested enough for his body to start feeling fuzzy, he found himself not worrying too much about it. Maybe now he could finally start to relax, now that he had seemed to hit that first level. His eyes drifted up to the suit itself, a purple and white bodysuit that would most likely not leave a lot to the imagination. At least they’ll probably have us bulking up before the end of this program...or team...whatever. Liam thought to himself as he glanced down at his rather scrawny build. The pack on the back interested him though, as he saw the tubing from it go into the arms and legs. Some kind of injections? Adrenaline maybe? That wouldn’t make much sense. Maybe something to protect from poisons? That seemed more likely. Were those plates or some kind of armor underneath the fiber? How did the injection system work? What material was the mesh? The eyes were covered with a white filament, were they completely transparent when looking through? Liam kept thinking of questions until he finally realized he had almost pressed himself against the glass trying to figure out the intricacies of his new suit.

”So...you made these...does that mean there’s some sort of lab or shop to build things?” Liam’s voice was still fairly soft, considering he was amidst these people now and asking what might have been a stupid question, but there was a slowly climbing confidence building behind it.

Myla whistled to herself as she looked at the costumes. Not just hers, but everyone else's seemed pretty cool too. Most of them were black with little splashes of color. She was a little concerned when she figured out what their suits were made of, though. Hers had the strongest material here - a graphene weave. It was bulletproof, extremely heat resistant - basically as tough as she was. But everyone else - Kevlar, metal armor - it concerned her. The living fog was probably alright (she didn't know for sure, but she assumed under the right conditions he'd be as hard to hurt as herself), but everyone else looked like normal, fragile meat-people.

"So, I like it. Love how it's showing off my abs. But...until Spring, can I have a coat thrown on too?" she asked. She turned to the "Huntswoman" and smirked. "You did a lot of research, Allie. You should know I don't like the cold." She looked at the suits again and got a funny look on her face. "They don't ride up anywhere, do they?"

---

Emily looked at her suit, at the name written under her own on the plaque, and frowned. Not because of the name - she'd chosen it after all. But because of what it meant. She was embracing everything people had said about her with it. Blood Witch. She wasn't just a Wiccan anymore. She was a Witch. A self-confessed Witch. And she'd acknowledged her power - her power to manipulate blood. Probably the most disturbing ability out of anyone here. The name, the admittance...it was just hitting her how there was no going back from this. She wasn't Emily, quiet wiccan. She was the Blood Witch.

She took off her sunglasses, revealing her permanently bloodshot eyes with their red irises. She stared up at the suit. "So this is who we are now."

The room was getting quite crowded with all these new faces, one man with the confidence of a mouse when he spoke, who was soon cut off by some lady with almost white hair, the way she talked and held herself made even the explosive man himself uneasy, causing him to re-adjust the way he sat in the seat, sitting up a bit more to get a better look, something wasn’t right about her.

Then there was this other character, female, crazy looking skin, faint blue and purple streaks covered her white skin. To Ashe, she looked almost like some sort of celestial being, and when she spoke about smashing some heads, the man could tell that if he was gonna get along with anyone, it be her.
Too bad she was cut off by some more dark and brooding chick, with scars all over her forearms, next to her, the scars Ashe had on his forearms were dwarfed in comparison to hers.

Damn, this whole hero gig might be a bit more entertaining with all these freaks…” He muttered under his breath before suddenly all the papers in the room were yanked from everyone's hands finding their way up to the mysterious individual behind the curtain. Which brought Ashe’s attention to the Huntswomans face, the way she spoke and acted complimented the way she looked. And like that, the Huntswoman started to lead the group into a different room, and unfortunately for Ashe he was left in the back of the crowd.

Hearing something about suits, tailored to suit their special abilities, the man got quite annoyed with his current position, so without much hesitation and a few groans. He started to shove his way through the front of the crowd. “ Move, get out of my fucking way, jesus christ, you all make a better door than a window ” The man spoke shoving his way past everyone, not caring who was in his way. " Jesus christ ya'll are dense, let me thro- ' The man stumbled back a few steps when met with an immovable force, it was the girl from before, with the celestial looks. He looked at her with a raised brow, and scoffed before simply moving around her. Once at the front of the crowd he looked around the room, to see what the Huntswoman was talking about, he spotted the suit that had his nickname on it. Dynamis.

The man was now in the spotlight, with all his glory. He looked younger than he actually was, due to his very healthy skin complexion, except for the scars he wore around his hands, wrists, and the lower half of his forearms. The suit for Ashe was more minimalist than the rest, it was a just a skin tight nano-suit that would show off his toned body more than others. The dark red material and the hexagonal patterns and the dark visor said it all, the power is in the user, not the suit.

The young man turned to the Huntswoman with a rather annoyed expression, giving little to no attention to the rest of the crowd “ Tell me… Can it handle the type of heat i'll be packing?

Fianna

memories and sadness

It was painstakingly obvious that Fianna had made the boy nervous and somehow, it made her smile sadly. Just seeing Liam get all clammy and nervous reminds her of some fond memories. Memories she cannot and do not want to forget.

[Flashback]

"I.. I love you" the boy whispered shyly against her ear, making both of them blush hard.

It was the first time Fianna had heard those three words from her beloved. She felt giddy but at the same time nervous. Because seriously, who could love someone like her? She was a prostitute! A singer who allure men into her bed! But knowing him well enough, the blonde knew he wasn't lying. For a moment she just looked him in the eyes with a stunned expression. Her mind was already thinking thousands of thoughts while insecurity and anxiety was starting to eat her and slowly.

Do I say I love you back? Or should I ignore it? But if I ignore it he might think I don't love him too? Oh gods why am I nervous? I am god fucking Fianna Chambers! Why the fuck am I nervous? Ahh, my hands are starting to sweat! How many minutes had passed since he said it? Does he now think I'm weird? Gah, I ruined it didn't I? He doesn't lo-

A warm, clammy hand took Fianna's hand and immediately, she snapped out of her thoughts. It took her a couple of seconds to realize that he was also nervous. Maybe even more nervous than her. She can see his immense blush and could feel how weakly and shyly he was holding her hand. Deciding that she doesn't need to think a lot about the situation and not worry about anything else, she intertwined her fingers with his and held onto his hand tightly, murmuring a small "I love you too" before smashing her lips against his.

[End of Flashback]

Realizing that Liam already sat down and hid his face inside his hoodie, Fianna had no choice but to divert her attention somewhere else. She looked at the stage again just in time to see the Huntswoman reveal herself. "Huh" she murmured to herself, her eyes scanning the female from head to toe. She did not expect the huntswoman aka Allison to look so cute. Sure her bubbly personality gave hints but damn. She's effin cute..

Soon they were instructed to follow by Allison and since she didn't have any other choice and had nothing better to do, she did what she was told.

They entered a hallway full of suits that's encased in some sort of glass. She can immediately feel the excitement buzzing in the air and it was contagious. It was so contagious that the rugged man at the back of the group decided to push everyone out of his way just to see his own custom suit. "Oh, honey" she called out, her voice sweet and laced with her power "is it really necessary to act like a- oof!" Fianna didn't get the chance to finish her sentence as she was pushed to the side, her back slamming against the glass. Immediately, the blonde clicked her tongue and had the urge to scream out of annoyance. How dare that little turd push her like she's some sort of useless object?!

Calm down, Fianna. Calm down. He's a total ass but calm down. Remember the contract. No killing. But you can hurt him in the battlefield soon and say its an accident. So calm down.

Now feeling herself calm down, she spun around and looked at the glass she bumped into to see if it was damaged but what she saw brought tears in her eyes. The suit reminded her of a conversation she had with her beloved. Back when they were young and naive, they once talked about being superheroes. It was mostly out of fun. They talked about their suits, their code names and even imagined scenarios. It reminded her how they used to laugh at the idea.

"And look where that idea brought me, my love"

Inside the glass was none other than her suit that's specially customized for her: a halter black suit with gray mesh on the sides and red piping. It was simple yet beautiful. She could already tell that it will perfectly match with her red pea coat.

She then quickly wiped her tears away, afraid that someone might see it. She cannot let anyone see her crying and let anyone think she's weak. Sure I can use the weak damsel act but now is not the right moment

Clearing her throat, she then looked at the huntswoman and put on an act by simply smiling. "Thank you for your hard work, darling. I greatly appreciate the work and effort you spent creating these suits"

"Although I couldn't help but wonder.."
she suddeny asked, her heterochromatic eyes now twinkling with mischief "is there a place where we can test it out?"

Benjamin continued to watch the stage from his end of the row as the Huntswoman warmly welcomed the group while some of the members were already introducing themselves. When the Huntswoman, or Allison, revealed her identity to them while still on the podium, the air surrounding Benjamin cooled as his body condensed in a mixture of surprise and interest. Even if they had signed the contract, it was no guarantee that everybody here could be trusted or would not fall out with the team later on.

Either she trusts us enough not to go spilling about this, he thought as he looked back at the individuals seated with him to gage their reaction. Or she's just confident that we won't be a problem even if we did.

Unsure if he should be relieved or worried by this, Benjamin allowed himself to slowly relax as the Huntswoman led them to the next room. Once inside, almost everybody had already spotted a suit designed for them specifically. Benjamin naturally drifted towards one that could only be his own. Like something out of the comic book he would read, the armor had a balanced appearance between strength and agility. It was armored with ebon colored plates though he could see the silver coils under the plates around the limbs mimicked human muscles, giving the entire suit a sleek, predator feel. At the base of the suit's stand was a plaque with something inscribed on it. Looking more closely at the sign, he could see the name he had chosen carved into the small sign: Fog. He looked back up to admire the armor more. If working as a hero meant being able to wear this while seeing the world, this might work out for him after all.

"Ninja time..."
Location | Still not a courthouse.

Time | I don't have a watch.
Weather | No windows, can't tell...

Matthew tried not to pay any mind to the peanut gallery, his focus on Huntswoman barely wavering up until the paper flew away. A little smirk appeared on his face as he saw the papers all go behind the curtain, and he felt very satisfied that his guess was right. He knew he’d been accused of having a baby face in the past, but when Huntswoman revealed her own face, he had her pretty well figured out. She was eager and excited, maybe a bit too naive for her own good. But that would explain the contrast between her and the person who was still hiding behind the curtain like a true adult with people problems. But the segway into bigger and brighter things was enough to snap Matt out of his critical evaluation.

He followed along behind the peppy redhead, though his steps slowed considerably as he saw everyone’s awesome super suits. He heard the other shy person pipe up about there being a workshop, and he glanced back at his with a bright grin. Said glance also brought his attention to none other than Curtain Man, dun da daaa! Though he didn’t call out the guy or anything of that nature, a cheerful grin was sent his way. After all, he was just standing there like a fish out of water. His gaze then flicked back to Allison. “They’re all so cool... Do you think we cou- hey, careful dude!” He started to question the apparent inventor before he felt impending doom coming within contact distance. He very quickly moved clear of the walking bulldozer before he had a chance to shove him aside like everyone else on the team. Be quick and don’t get hit applied even here. His train of thought was interrupted as he shot the guy a mildly annoyed look, though he let out a sigh seeing how spirited he was as he looked up at his own costume.

He continued walking along the hallway admiring the suits until he saw a placard with his calling card on it. Havoc, always trouble. But maybe he might at least cause some trouble for someone who deserved it. He heard one of the girls say something about how this was who they were now, and it unnerved him more than it probably should have. With a name too close to meaning walking disaster, he really didn’t appreciate it. “You know, I have to give you bonus points for sounding so ominous about all of this, lady.” He grumbled softly, letting out a little huff and shaking his head. When he turned back to the group and saw everyone else still fairly upbeat, a small smile came back to his face. “Oh, right, I was also kinda wondering when we’d get to test these out.” He added a bit sheepishly, taking a quieter tone when he realized another girl was asking the same question. ”And also, would it be alright if I used the workshop too? I like to tinker with things, and it’s totally fine if it’s more of a private space for you, you don’t have to share if you don’t want to.”

The woman, as usual, stood front and center among her victory, and she grinned at the various looks of shock and appreciation her gesture had earned. It seemed, at least, that most of them liked their suits, and she beamed with pride as she watched a few of them start to hesitantly approach the cases that separated them from them.

Her smile fell a bit as she watched Ashe shove his way through the crowd, then smirked as he smacked into the immovable wall that was Myla before continuing.

Ashe spoke, turning to her with an expression that seemed almost annoyed. She returned his look coolly, the smile dropping and her eyes softening to some sort of indifference. “Of course,” she answered. “I designed it specifically to compliment your powers.”

The next question came from Myla, who looked over at her and requested a coat, then inquired about the suits riding up. Allison just snorted a bit in laughter, dimples creasing her cheeks. “An oversight on my part,” she admitted. “Of course I can whip up some sort of coat for it by the time you go on your first patrol. Perhaps even a retractable one. As for riding up...I should hope not- I designed them for comfort and practicality, after all.”

Her attention was next caught by Liam, who she could barely hear above the din of people chattering when he asked her, quiet and polite as ever, if there was a workshop he could tinker in. At nearly the same time, Finna and Matthew both inquired about testing the suits out, with Matthew also voicing his interest in tinkering. In response, Allison pointed to each of them consecutively, answering each question with a single word. “Yes, yes, yes, and yes.” She was beaming now, particularly at the two boys, since she always had a soft spot for tinkerers. “There’s a general workshop as well as my private lab, which all of you are welcome to visit if you need anything- even if it’s just to talk. As for testing….we’re actually going to be doing that in a few minutes. An...introductory segment, if you will. In fact, if you’re all ready…” Once again, she raised her voice, catching the attention of the rest of the hall’s occupants. “...we can move on to your dorms.”

After the readiness of her charges was confirmed, Allison began to lead the way once more. At the end of the hall, it split into two different directions. She took them left, and on their right, once they turned, was a long line of doors, each with a bronze nameplate and a small scanner next to it. There were no apparent handles, as it seemed the scanners only would allow access. “Welcome home.” She grinned at each of them, then tapped idly at her wrist. All the doors slid open simultaneously, revealing the insides. They were almost penthouse apartments, with a kitchen, bathroom, walk-in closet, laundry area, large living area, and a spacious bedroom in each of them. Each living area and bedroom had a huge tinted floor-to-ceiling window, allowing the occupants to look over the city from their position on one of the top floors. They were certainly luxury and modern, something that most of them likely had never had.

“You’ll be able to personalize them later,” Allison said, watching as they spread through the hall to check out their respective dorms. “And your keys are on your bedside tables for now. I suggest you get them now and drop off anything you need to before we move on.”

A cheerful grin flashed his way from Matthew, and Slate couldn’t help the tiniest smile from twisting the corner of his mouth at the gesture. The kid was a criminal, sure, but…maybe he wouldn’t be so bad. At least he wasn’t like the other punk who was currently shoving his way past the rest of them.

It was one set of words, however, that stood out to him even above the chatter and Allison’s voice.

This is who we are now.

His heart twisted a bit at that, and he scratched uncomfortably at his wrist. He hated things like that. Being defined. He wondered if Emily had spoken in a bittersweet way, or if she were fine with her person being forever tied to the definitions and constraints of her codename.

The moment was over as soon as it began, and Slate moved forward behind the rest of them, staying in the back as he always did with his glossy black wings folded tightly to his spine.

And he stayed there, yet unseen by most, until they returned from exploring their apartments. Still, he tried to stay a bit covert by simply casually leaning against the wall and watching in silence. Though how hidden he was actually going to be all depended on the attentiveness of the recruits. After all, he was dressed in a dark metal suit, and the huge, raven-black pair of wings in the lightly-colored hallway was quite conspicuous.

Aiden was at the back of the group when the boy right in front of her began to shove his way past the rest of the young adults crowding the hallway, and she simply rolled her eyes a bit at his irate actions.

She didn’t need such informalities, but then again she wouldn’t use them even if she didn’t have her powers. Then again, it seemed as if the boy didn’t really care about the feelings of others- or their thoughts about him.

Aiden was much quieter in pushing her way through the crowd, she simply ducked through the gaps when they all dispersed, making her way to her own suit once the rest of the ‘team’ was preoccupied.

Her suit was surprisingly to her liking, and it was something that was both freaky and awesome. Black with blue accents and, contrary to most of her new comrades, a helmet rather than a mask. Above it, her alias loomed. Firecracker. A short, loud spark. She stared up at it, a strange lump growing in her throat. Still, she swallowed thickly and turned away from it.

She couldn’t help but wonder if her brand-new career would end as quickly as her alias predicted.

Her thoughts were broken into by Allison’s words and subsequent footsteps, and once again she melded into the group of people streaming through the doors. This time, she was in the middle, and she just walked with her eyes forward, trying not to bump shoulders with anyone. She ended up near the huge, ab-blessed woman and the talkative black-haired boy she’d entered the orientation right in front of.

Soon enough, though, the walk was over and people were splitting off into their designated rooms. Aiden ran her fingers over the words on her plaque, which was next to the third door from the two older heroes.

It was strange, having a place of her own, and especially one so big. Hesitantly, she stepped in. It was a mixture of hardwood, tile, and carpet, with carpet only in the bedroom, tile in the bathroom, laundry area, and kitchen, and hardwood everywhere else.

She couldn’t help but let out a shocked laugh as she stared out of the floor-to-ceiling window. Somehow, this wasn’t what she’d been expecting- and though she hadn’t expected the accommodations to be tiny, she certainly wasn’t expecting a full apartment.

Aiden wandered into the bedroom eventually and blinked in shock at the huge king-sized bed next to yet another massive window. The bedside table was the only surface in the place that had anything on it- that must be her ‘key’.

It was just another tag. She frowned, lifting the small piece of metal and examining it. One side of it was smooth and the other held a simple holographic chip, much like a credit card. She shrugged and simply clipped it to her own tags, adding a third one to the cursed thing she had to keep around her neck.

Finally, she emerged, joining the slowly reforming group as she once again stuffed the tags into her shirt. She half-wondered if Allison would be able to remotely open her doors whenever she wanted, but she figured someone else would ask eventually, so she just hung back and observed the team while they weren’t paying attention to her.

The fact that people were so ready and willing to test these suits out partially surprised Liam. Were the others really that anxious to show off what they could do? As far as Liam was concerned, he was conflicted. He knew that, by coming here, he would be forced to use his ability in order to perform his duties, but his parent’s ingraining in him that powers were something to be feared and avoided was still heavily induced into his psyche. It was not something one so easily cast off like a coat. Liam wasn’t all that practiced in his ability, and while he knew on a fundamental level how it worked, just as one knows how one’s own hand operates, it was the equivalent of teaching yourself to box. You know how to form a fist, and how to throw a punch, but you would lack style, technique and overall muscle tone. It would have to be something he would have to work on in order to become an asset to the overall organization.

Upon hearing his question answered by Allison, among a few others, he couldn’t help but notice her unbridled enthusiasm towards her answer. At least there was somewhere where he could go to get away from his own headspace at times. Doing work with his hands always made him feel more comfortable, and knowing how things work made it easier to project them with his ability. Allison didn’t spend much time on that topic however, as she made to move them forward and onto the next part of the tour. This one lead them into a hallway, with doors and nameplates on one side. With a few more words and a tap of her wrist, the doors all opened for everyone to see inside.

“Welcome Home.”

Home? These are our rooms? Liam thought to himself as he walked along the hallway until he found his name embossed in one of the bronze nameplates. Taking a step inside, he couldn’t help but feel more than a little overwhelmed. It was open, large and had a massive window overlooking the city. This was...more than Liam was expecting and definitely more than he had ever had. Granted, he had never felt like his parent’s house was small by any real definition. A moderate sized home for a middle income family. This apartment felt, in comparison, to be owned by the rich and famous. Everything was perfectly clean and tidy, not a lick of dust to be found. Taking a moment to head to the kitchen, he opened the fridge to find that it was stocked with enough food to keep him going for awhile. All the utensils, cutlery and other kitchen tools were also there. A fully furnished living room, bedroom and bathroom lead him to the conclusion that nearly everything had been taken care of.

Save for one thing.

As he searched through the cabinets of the kitchen, he found a distinct lack of anything alcoholic in his apartment. A shame, but nothing more than a minor inconvenience for the moment. He dropped his ‘water’ bottle in the sink for later cleanup and moved to the bedroom where his key supposedly was. A keycard of sorts, since the doors appeared to lack any traditional means of opening such as a knob or even a deadlock. What would happen in a power outage? Could they be locked inside their rooms? Were the windows tempered glass? A couple questions started floating into Liam’s mind, but he found himself thankful that they were more mechanical in nature rather than self defamatory. He could feel a slight blush to his cheeks happening, but considering what they were most likely going to be doing next, he knew that it would be needed for him to be in a better headspace and confident. He attached the keycard to his tags and moved to join the others.

As he exited the room, and was about to ask a couple questions he noticed someone standing off to the side doing their best ‘I’m not really here’ impression with the shadows and the wall. Black on black, he wasn't easy to pick out but there was someone there. Was this the person the others alluded to at the intro to the session? Allison didn’t seem worried, and neither did the others for that matter. With that knowledge, Liam tucked all potential worry about him to the back of his mind.

”About the rooms.” Liam stated, stepping a bit closer to Allison. ”Are there emergency procedures in place in case of a power failure or security breach? Are the windows tempered glass? Are the rooms airtight in case of biological attack?”

To be honest, Liam didn’t really know what he was asking. He had watched enough movies and shows to remember certain questions, but as to whether they were good questions to be asking or if it was something he should even bother asking was not something he really knew. Still, the more he knew the better, knowledge was power...or so he was told.

Her whole pad was bigger than her entire house growing up. Damn, Myla thought. Someone's got deep pockets. Ooh! A big window! The unbreakable superhuman ran to it, setting her bags down at her living room and looking out at the city. It was an amazing view! No building was tall enough to be level with her, so she was reassured that should she want to walk around her new digs naked - which was basically a guarantee with her - no unwanted eyes would be upon her. She was even tempted to do that right then and there, to strip and turn up the music in celebration. But...well, it would be more than a little awkward with her door still open and everything.

---

Can I get up there to install curtains? Emily wondered to herself as she stared at the big windows. Are there even curtains big enough to cover these? No privacy. Lots of light. Sure this place was big, but the introverted goth couldn't stand those windows. Thick, dark blackout curtains would have to go up. Her bedroom was nice - big, spacious, and she absolutely loved the bed. But she wanted some dark red blankets for it - would help if she was still bleeding at the end of a mission. Maybe put up a pin-up poster of a gothic supermodel behind the door (she had plenty to choose from).

She came out and looked at Allison, noting off to the side that Myla was literally running all over her place looking at everything. She hadn't even bothered to close the door. She folded her arms and leaned against the doorway, acting unimpressed but there was definite approval in her voice as she talked to the heroine. "Not bad. Why too much openness. You know where to get thirty-foot curtains?"

He managed to catch a glimpse of Curtain Man’s tiny smile before directing his attention to the suit. Darker metals, sleek little strips of, what, lights? On the forearms. There was some kind of woven material that ran underneath the metal. Nothing on it reflected the light that shined on it. A full helmet that probably had a retractable option like Huntswoman’s. He wondered if there was an operating system inside it. But he couldn’t wonder for too long, as they were moving again.

Matthew trailed along with the group, his grin remaining in tact but enthusiasm slowly dying inside. He didn’t like the lock on the doors. Digital wasn’t safe. Reminded him too much of buzzing doors at the jail, the ones on timed switches. Would they get locked in there? He had one of those unnerving feelings that hit him hard in the gut. He needed to see if he was allowed to leave the building. But first, get a grip, act natural, and follow the crowd. He found the door with his name on it and made his way inside. If anyone noticed his fingers tapping against his leg more than usual, then they were the weirdos for staring. Big windows, he could probably use his old sheets to cover them until he found some curtains. He didn’t care how high up they were, voyeurism was still a thing and he didn’t want to deal with creeps wielding binoculars if and when this whole super team thing started working. He couldn’t tell if the tinting would be good enough to defend against prying eyes. ”Definitely needs to be more lived in...” He muttered to himself, observing how impersonal the place felt with all of its modern wonders. It even had the dreaded new smell to it.

Quiet and careful steps brought him to the bedroom. He listened to the commotion in the hallway with a faintly held breath, just waiting for the door to close and auto lock. Finding the new fucking tag on his nightstand, he quickly added it to his little collection and stuffed it back down under his layers of clothing. One more thing to weigh him down with. He quickly exited his apartment, hands shoved into his pockets and a bright smile back on his face. Said smile faded ever so slightly when he heard Liam’s assortment of questions. More things to worry about, then. But he needed to know something in order to settle just one of his always ticking nerves. She said personalization would come later, but he didn’t know the implications. ”Would it be alright if we went and got some things from our old residences? I like the decorating, very modern, but it isn’t exactly my style, y’know?” He asked Allison with a lighthearted smile. Memories of the boarding school he ended up in were still fresh, distinctly remembering the trouble he’d gotten into for leaving school grounds. Even on weekends. His brief little stint in jail while he was waiting on his court date really didn’t help him either. He needed to know if this was just some fancy new cell, or if he really was free to live normally.

Fianna

Nightmare and Reality

"Ah, I see" was Fianna's answer upon hearing the Hunstwoman before looking at her suit once again. "Well then, we better get going. I am certain I am not the only one who's excited for this.. introductory segment"

Soon, everyone was being guided towards a set of doors. At first Fianna thought they were being led to the testing area but to her disappointment they were shown to the dorms. The songbird couldn't help but click her tongue out of annoyance. Wouldn't it be better if they showed the dorms after and not before? Tsk. Now instead of thinking about what could possibly my team mates can do, I have to think about how my room will look like

Allison showed them the dorms and immediately Fianna felt her blood ran cold. The place was posh and luxurious, something she was used to for being an escort if not a singer to a couple of rich guys around the city. For others, the place might be a dream come true but for Fianna it was more of a nightmare. The feeling of unfamiliarity and being uncomfortable at the same time triggered memories of abuse and being held against her will.

Quickly, she crossed her arms across her chest to stop her hands from shaking. While the others look for their rooms, the blonde just stood on her spot, her eyes closed and her muscles tensed. Just like some of her previous clients, no matter how the ASA advertise it, the dorms will be her prison. Her cage. And just like with her clients, she already signed the contract with ASA which means, she cannot escape.

"H-How ironic.." she stuttered while attempting to calm herself down.
"Like a bird, here I am.. caged yet again"

Ever since her beloved and her baby died, things didn't went well with Fianna. She got tangled up with the wrong sorts of people that led to her being used if not abused. She tried her hardest to forget all of it but it seems she suffered some trauma.

Upon hearing someone asking if they are allowed to get things from their old residence, Fianna snapped her eyes wide open."Please.." she breathed and almost begged as she took a step forward, her knees immediately giving out causing her to stumble and grasp an armored man's arm with one of her shaking hands "..can we go? If possible, right now. I need-, I mean, we need to get our things as soon as possible and perhaps settle down. S-So, let's get things over with and get out of here. Please"

Ashe followed the rest of the group to see what else they had in store for them, the fact that they had so much money put into this program only showed how desperate they were to get them on their side, to be their last bastion of justice. It was honestly quite pitiful if you had asked him, and now they had their own personal spaces to do whatever they damn well pleased? For some reason, as amazing as it all seemed, to Ashe, he felt this would all be temporary, at least for him.

will we be able to have as much creative freedom with these personal quarters? ” He asked as they moved on down the hall.

The man soon moved on to his own room, his own place was way too high end for his taste, It was inviting though. He looked around, big open windows let in some light, comboed with the brightly themed decor gave him a headache. He walked over to his bedside and grabbed what was his key, as well as the new tag, with a heavy sigh, he put it onto his necklace. “ It’s like i’m starting a damn collection… ” He muttered to himself before leaving and shuffling down the hall to rest.

Ashe overheard talk about going back to their personal belongings. “ I second that notion, I got a bunch of shit I need ” He chimed in
