War of the Roses [Sign-Ups]

The year is 1455. England just lost the Hundred Years' War to France, causing King Henry VI to suffer a nervous breakdown. Discontented nobles were already gathering their forces to challenge the weak king's rule when Henry was struck down suddenly and inexplicably. Poison was suspected, but no one dared point fingers in the atmosphere of suspicion and uncertainty that descended on the court. With only two daughters left behind, a civil war seemed all but certain. The Queen fled to her native France, but her daughter and stepdaughter refused to follow her. The elder staunchly held her ground and claimed the throne, with a few family members and loyal lords lining up behind her. Her sister remained ensconced in her own house at Arundel Castle, neither supporting nor openly opposing her sister, but secretly plotting her eventual downfall. The Duke of York put in his own claim for the throne, based on his nearer relation to Edward III, and a variety of powerful families, mistrusting a female ruler, joined him.

Will the young Queen successfully hold the country together? Will her half-sister succeed in her schemes? Or will the Duke of York overthrow them both and steal the throne for himself? The rest is up to you…​

This is an alternate history RP about power, rebellion, espionage, assassination, and pretty much any other kind of plotting and intrigue you can come up with! We diverge from history prior to the premise, and from there we can take it anywhere we want. Let's try to stay mostly accurate to clothing, speech, gender roles, technology, titles and estates, etc. of the time, though. You can make your own characters or use historical figures, whichever you prefer. There are 3 set "main" characters, one of which I will play, and then the rest of the followers of each camp or neutrals you can all fill out as you like. Double agents, mixed loyalties, and people who change their loyalties throughout the RP are all welcome. Don't just stick to lords and ladies – we need soldiers, spies, musicians, fools, guards, servants, etc. I also need some people who are willing to get their characters killed (cause, ya know, reality :P) - but I promise to only kill off those who mark that they are okay with it! And obviously in the end only one of the 3 mains will be left standing, so whoever plays those roles must also be willing to do a dramatic death scene at some point (probably quite late in the RP).

  1. No Drama Llamas. Ain't nobody got time fo that. If you have a complaint take it to the GMs (@Kythera and @Shayla ), please don't harass the other RPers.
  2. No God-modding or Meta-gaming! This is very important in this kind of RP – you will, obviously, be doing stuff to other characters at some point, so make sure you are working with your fellow writers to develop those scenes in a way that is acceptable to everyone. And stuff will be done to your character, too! Nobody is invincible, and drama and intrigue is what keeps the story going, so you have to be willing to be spied on, attacked, etc. at some point, too. Be very careful to separate what you know versus what your character knows. Some rules on specific situations:
  a. Spying/eavesdropping: Not possible in a private room (bedroom, office, closed meeting room, etc.) unless one of the conversing characters has let your char in (or you've worked something out with the writer whose character owns that room to allow your char to overhear).
  i. Always possible in public places (gardens, ballrooms, churches, streets, etc.) BUT you MUST have established that your character is in that location BEFORE the conversation starts (e.g. – your character is on the bowling lawn when two other characters walk into the adjoining garden. Your char can dive into the hedges and overhear their convo). Your char cannot teleport across London just because you know the Queen is whispering something important to her guard.
  b. Arrests/fights/deaths: MUST have the other person's agreement in advance.
  c. Intercepting letters or messengers: another char (or yours) MUST have seen the letter given to the servant or heard where it is going. And still get the letter writer's permission ahead of time – maybe their messenger knows crazy kung fu or something and could fight you off :P Obviously if your character is given the letter directly s/he can open it or send it to a different place than instructed.
  d. Put "A rose by any other name" at the bottom of your CS if you've read the rules.
  3. Activity – There's no minimum, but just make sure you're keeping up with the flow of the RP and your character isn't getting left behind. Totally understand if RL comes up, but try to let us know if you have to disappear for a while.
  4. For initial posts wait for everyone to post their first one; after that wait at least 2 other posts before posting again with the same character.
  5. Quality over quantity, but no one-liners please. Other than that, so long as you make sure your character is actually doing something and moving the plot forward I'm not concerned about min or max length. Do use a spell-checker, though – I'm not going to be the grammar police, but if a post becomes unintelligible I may ask you to review it and make it more understandable for others.
  6. This is a non-libertine RP, so any sex scenes must be part of the natural plot progression and hidden by spoilers. (Remember - you may only do sex scenes with people in your same age group).
  7. Try to stay time-period appropriate with clothes, activities, locations, gender roles, technology, etc. You don't need to write in old English (in fact, please don't!), but try to avoid distinctly modern words and phrases. The one exception is racism and other bigotry – I don't care if it would've been said back then, it's not going in this RP. Some degree of period-appropriate sexism is okay, but don't take it too far. If anyone feels offended by anything written just let the GMs know and we'll ask the writer to scale it back. I'd much rather have everyone feel included and loved than have a perfectly accurate setting.

  This is the first room visitors come to in the series of rooms leading to the Queen's apartments. Most guests can't get past this room. Many guards are stationed at the entrance to this room, and the exit into the public apartments, hence the name.

  After the Guard Chamber are the Public Apartments, where the Queen meets more formal visitors, and where any nobles or important families can visit her during the day. Nobles resident at court will usual gather in this room after dinner every evening for dancing, music, drinking, etc.
  
  
  Painted Chamber

  
  After the public apartments is the Painted Chamber, or the Queen's private apartment, where she sits with her ladies-in-waiting and meets with advisers and officials during the day. Guards stand outside the doors, determining who can enter the private apartment. All her official advisers, and lords and ladies resident at court would be able to come in at any time, but visitors, servants, and other attendants would need to be expected or get the Queen's permission to enter.

Her mouth is narrow in width, but her lips are quite thick, and relieve the harshness of the rest of her face with a sensual quality. When she smiles her whole face seems to change, from stern and unforgiving to warm and soft.

Elegant but restrained. All Anne's clothes are of the highest quality and style, but she dislikes overly ornate embellishments.

Medium-high; knows she's not as smart as her sister and is very sensitive about that fact.

Personality Traits and Flaws:
A Princess of the Blood from birth, Anne has always known her place in society. Without being particularly arrogant or vain of her personal traits, she is yet haughty and has a commanding presence that can be developed only through years of superiority. But the Palace of Westminster has never been a safe or warm environment, and so Anne has inculcated, through years of living through plots, wars, suspicion, and deceit, a certain paranoia and independence. There is hardly anyone she trusts completely since the death of her father.

In particular, Anne distrusts and fears her sister. She has always been jealous of and competitive with her half-sister, and now, when the crown is in question, more so than ever. She knows her sister is cleverer than her, and has always been better able attract people to her side. Whether Isabella is just naturally more charismatic than Anne, or, as Anne believes, she is just very easily able to dupe people with the cloyingly innocent façade that she periodically puts on for show, her sister has just somehow always been able to make everyone believe and trust in her instead of Anne.

Anne has a natural ambition and thirst for power, by which she has been particularly driven ever since she realized her father was never going to have a son. As soon as the first hint of possibility of her succeeding to the throne arose, she has been compelled by it, and now desires more than anything to rule the country. She has a controlling and [outwardly] confident demeanor, and genuinely believes she will be a good Queen. She is energetic and determined, but also dutiful to her country and to her family.

Family:
Daughter of King Henry VI and Queen Elizabeth Beaufort, daughter of the Duke of Somerset. Mother died giving birth to her, and the King remarried a few years later, giving her a stepmother and half-sister. Family line is the Plantagenets, House of Lancaster.

History:
Anne was born and raised a Princess of England. She lived most of her life at Westminster Palace and Windsor Castle, with the best tutors in the land. Though her father never expected her to inherit the throne, always planning to have a son, she was nevertheless well-educated in the history of England, foreign relations, and various affairs of state. Her weak area is and always was economics – she has never been able to grasp the job of the steward and the system of taxes and feudal obligations of the nobility.

Anne's mother died giving birth to her, and her father remarried when she was three, to a French princess. They gave birth to another daughter, Isabella, when Anne was four years old. Isabella was always petted and loved by both parents, and Anne, lacking a mother to stand up for her and frequently subject to her step-mother's jealousy, was left to make her way on her own.

When Anne was 15 her father arranged a marriage for her with the Prince of Castile, but before the marriage could take place the prince died of dysentery. He next tried to betroth her to the King of Denmark, but lengthy 2-year negotiations broke off with a diplomatic squabble and no betrothal. Finally, seeing the end of the Hundred Years' War in sight, Henry planned to include a marriage between Anne and the Crown Prince of France as part of the peace treaty. This betrothal was agreed to and signed at the time of Henry's death, when Anne's ascendency to the throne threw everything into uncertainty.​

From the time he was young, he was always a looker. Cass could turn heads and distracted many of the servants around the house. As he got older he was only more noticed. She them took him in the carriage and back to the castle. That was the last time he saw his family. Tyrius is the epitome of what a soldier should be, strong-willed, cunning, adaptable, compliant, and assertive. The years of his captivity as it'd be called to better suit the terms, molded and shifted him like a clay to then be carved into the man he is now. But this knight does as a few chinks in his armor, his anger is one of those, Tyruius holds a hatred for the English so deep seated, the mere mention strikes a nerve with him as he's forced to recollect the seeds of his past now sewn into his present and becoming future. He is also a paranoid and watchful man, always on his guard, something that serves as both a flaw and a trait.​

Fears:
Tyrius is a man that has faced the horrid oppression of slavery, to say that he doesn't fear is ludicrous, he does indeed fear but the prideful knight would never show it. His fears are yet to be seen as it seems.

-Tyrius shows a very unique comprehension of swordsmanship originating from both England and France.
-The knight also shows an understanding of massive military battle strategy and tactics.
-Map reading is also another notable skill the man possesses.
Not only his he strong but just as fast, exhibiting a surprising level of physical prowess to catch his enemies off guard and end them.

Goal: To gain the respect of the French people.
Motivation: Tyrius seeks to prove himself as a knight, to be respected as all others are. Given his skin color he is judged and harassed almost at a constant, his ambition is to revered as a champion knight as opposed to some kind of savage mongrel as the Englishmen and women described him in his time of slavery.

History: Tyrius was born a slave under the rule of his English superiors, luck granted him mercy from his owners as they'd be called, thanks to his parent's willingly giving their lives so their son could live on to be raised by his English foster parents, treated as a slave throughout his years starting at the age of 5, upon reaching 15 he learned the truth after searching within his 'room' or, the basement. The young African male's find was disturbing to say the least, his parents shackled just behind the wine cellar's entrance, their bodies nothing but prettified skull and bones.

History:
Born to Viscount Christopher Northwood, Thomasin was a disappointment at birth. She was a twin and considered by her father and older brothers, the lesser half. Her father only wanted sons carrying his name and was ashamed to have been given a daughter after four healthy sons.

As a child, Thomasin spent the majority of her life watching her father and brothers from afar, while being taught and trained to be a proper young lady, by her tutors. (Her mother was a frail woman who after so many births was deemed to be bedridden for the remainder of her life.) With the absence of both parents in her life, Thomasin tried very hard to become a proper young lady but also to gain the attention and approval of her father.


Unfortunately, Thomasin's mother fell ill and the doctor deemed her unable to save. Despite his cold exterior, Thomasin's father adored his wife and spent her last days trying to make her as happy and as comfortable as possible.

One day, one of Thomasin's brother did a wonderful thing and assisted a Duke who's carriage had broken down on the road. To reward this kind deed the Duke offered to elevate the status of one member of the Northwood family. Thomasin's brother was already apprentice to a reputable physician, so he could not take the offer, and Thomasin's other brothers were soldiers to the crown and it would have been shameful if one of them was to be promoted without actual improvement. Thomasin's mother begged her husband to elect their only daughter for the reward, and her husband reluctantly agreed.

Thomasin was swept away to the Palace of Westminster to become a lady in waiting to princess Anne. Although she was training to be Princess Anne's lady in waiting, Thomasin always found herself drifting towards her lady's younger sister, Princess Isabella. WIP
