  • ━━ THE PLOT ━━

    At 7:42 p.m. on November 23rd, 1953, twenty-one customers dine at a quaint roadside diner in Rifle, Colorado. This diner, named Waffleville in homage to its founder Adam Leville and his love for breakfast food, is nothing particularly special. The black and white tiles have had the same scuff marks for decades, and more than just a few lighting fixtures have blown. Still, given its place by the highway, and its being the only diner in Rifle, it receives a steady amount of business. Enough to keep them open and the staff members paid, at least.

    Business is especially good when it storms, as it is doing now, when outdoorsmen seek shelter from the rain and truck drivers wait for proper visibility. The waitresses make sure to keep the coffee flowing for all those working night shifts, each cup refill sending them closer and closer toward their closing time of 9 p.m.

    Just an ordinary Monday night.

    Except not quite. This storm is a uniquely awful one, and the staff members without cars and without umbrellas can only hope that it will be done by the time closing time rolls around. Just as they dare to hope that the downgrade of the rain from an uproarious symphony to a gentle thrum is a sign of clearer skies, the lights go out and leave the diner drowned in black. An inconvenience for all, certainly, but nothing too upsetting. They're back on soon enough, anyway.

    But shortly after the lights turn back on, the recognizable sound of choking begins in the dining room, drawing attention to one Mr. Taron. Not that anyone knows his name until they remove his identification from his corpse's wallet.

    Because it seems the man hadn't been choking at all, as the foam fizzling out of his mouth indicated. According to the detective, who had just finished working his overtime shift half an hour ago and had settled down at the diner with his partner for some greasy hash browns, the man exhibits signs of poisoning.

    With that simple proclamation, what was once a rundown diner becomes a crime scene, and thirty people become thirty suspects. It is clear that no one is going home tonight. Not until the murderer is found.

    But who could it possibly be? Why did they kill Mr. Taron?

  • ━━ THE RULES ━━

    RULE 01.
    All Iwaku rules apply, of course.

    RULE 02.
    The murderer will be secretly, and randomly, selected from the submitted characters. Whichever player controls that character will work with MaryGold and me to discuss future murders, next moves, etc. For obvious reasons, DO NOT TELL ANYONE THAT YOU ARE THE MURDERER.

    RULE 03.
    Characters WILL be dying in this roleplay, so don't get attached. Some of the deaths will be randomly selected to the best of our ability, to keep things fairer, while some might be more purposeful depending on how the plot winds up moving and who the killer winds up being. Please do not take your character's death as a personal attack, as they are not meant that way, but only as a tool of moving the story forward.

    RULE 04.
    This roleplay will depend on characters having connections to each other and motives for murder, so please be social with your fellow players and be open to various character interactions. This roleplay kinda depends on it.

    RULE 05.
    Each player can have up to 3 characters. Please don't take on more than you can handle.

    RULE 06.
    Real face claims only.

    RULE 07.
    We ask that you post for each character at least once every two weeks.

    RULE 08.
    We are looking for intermediate/advanced roleplayers who can make multiple-paragraph responses for each of their posts. To make sure you are a good fit for this roleplay, send me a writing sample with a ♠ in the message title. Once approved there, you'll be invited to the OOC Discord server.

    RULE 09.
    Respect all your fellow players. Respect me and MaryGold as the GMs, and the rules we put in place. Disrespectful behavior OOC and IC targeting will get you removed.

    RULE 10.
    No god-modding, power play, and Mary/Gary Sues. Please ask permission before making a major move against another character or in the general story.

    RULE 11.
    Since this is a murder mystery roleplay, expect some gore. Still, anything that may be especially triggering must have a warning beforehand, be put in spoilers, or be blurred.

    RULE 12.
    YOU ARE ALLOWED TO LIE ON SHEETS. As long as you inform MaryGold and me of the differences, you can lie and/or be vague in your character sheet to prevent other players from knowing your character's secrets.

    RULE 13.
    Your character should have known Mr. Taron in some way and should have some motivation to kill him. While we know this isn't realistic, it amplifies tension. Also, it makes it easier for whoever ends up being the killer if they already have a motive in mind.

HISTORY:
Arthur had a rather normal childhood, all things considered. He and his three older brothers were raised by their single mother, who was constantly working, and who therefore had little time to spend with them. All of the brothers banded together to raise each other, with the eldest brother John fitting the father role most. Being significantly younger than the other three, Arthur was still stuck in their small apartment when all three had moved out. Because of his "unique" interest in crime and his tendency to talk people's ears off, he didn't have many friends, and so he had a pretty lonely childhood from age fourteen and up.

Possessing advanced observational skills from a young age, he enjoyed playing detective around the neighborhood and decided early on in life that he would be an official detective when he grew up. Upon graduating high school, he went to university and received his bachelor's in criminal justice. He swiftly found a job, where he was partnered with Lottie Nelson.

He has recently received a job offer in Los Angeles. Given Nelson's receiving a job offer in Las Vegas, they have decided to travel together until their eventual planned separation.

HISTORY:
Mitchell was born the only child of a middle-class family, with set expectations on how he was to conduct himself and how he was to spend his life. He did very well in school and was in the chess and swimming clubs. When he graduated, he went to college and then promptly became an accountant. When he was 26, he met Rosaline at a diner where she was working as a restaurant. They promptly began dating at her request, much to his parent's glee, and were married after two years of being together.

Mitchell himself, however, was not happy. Even though he tried to be. He didn't like his mundane job, nor could he love his wife in the way she wanted. This discontent made him so susceptible to temptation, as he found happiness in the arms of a coworker of his. Rosaline ultimately found out and promptly divorced him.

Having nowhere to go as a result, he moved to Rifle to stay with his cousin. He found a job in accounting in the area and eventually bought his own apartment.

The only child of a relatively low-income family, Lawrence never had very high expectations for his life. For the most part, he has just gone with the flow of things, content with his two minimum wage jobs. As a child, he became friends with a more well-off girl named Nancy Hayes, and their closeness lead both of their families to joke early about a marriage between them. HISTORY:
Maple and her two younger sisters were born and raised in Colorado. In fact, their parents and their parents before them were all raised in this small town as well. They've been moderately well-off, the children always kept satisfied, their needs and (most of) their wants met. Yet, Maple wasn't completely happy.

She was often made fun of in school for her body, because her body had developed early on, and this (somehow) meant that she was a slut. The boys were never shy about showing Maple how they felt about it, and the girls were jealous of her because of it. The only solace she had was from her teacher, Mr. Taron. At least until his reassurances and compliments turned into something she wasn't at all comfortable with. However, because of the rumors that were already going around about Maple, no one believed that a teacher would put their hands on a student, not one as respected and loved as David Taron.

She escaped the scrutiny when she went away to CU Boulder, spending four years studying to be a teacher herself, specializing in History. After receiving her degree, she wanted to live and work in Boulder, however she was unable to afford it at the time, and eventually moved home shortly after graduation. She got a job working at the diner, Waffleville, as a waitress. It wasn't too bad—the only downside being that she occasionally had to serve people from her past—and it was a decent way to save money for the time being.

HISTORY:
Charlie was never an expert when it came to romance or women. All he ever really cared about was his carefully crafted routine of reading his morning paper, spending his day working on cars (occasionally other things, while not at work), and spending a couple evenings per week with the guys, drinking and playing pool. He was content, at least he thought he was until he met Iliana. Or rather, when Iliana met him. She had basically forced him to take her out—Charlie wasn't really complaining—and it only got better from there. He'd never say this aloud, but this woman made him believe in soulmates (and that was the only reason he let her coerce him into getting matching tattoos). She fit perfectly into his life, turning something content into something of actual happiness. No one but Iliana really saw this side of him, though, and they were both fine with that.

They had only been married for five years when they got into a terrible car accident—a truck driver falling asleep at the wheel, turning into their lane—which led to Iliana's death. "Justice" was served in the form of a fine, regardless that the man's recklessness took someone's life. Something about not wanting to condemn a good, remorseful man. The truck driver wasn't originally from Albany, and left soon afterwards.

Two months later, Charlie decided it was time for a change. Everything about his life in Albany reminded him of his deceased wife, and he felt the need to start over. A friend of a friend had just opened up a garage down in Austin, Texas, so he packed up and moved out, making few stops along the way, one being a diner in the small town of Rifle, Colorado.

HISTORY:
Lonnie was 9 years old when his father died, leaving what little money and the small apartment he had left to Lonnie, his mother, and his younger brother. It was then that Lonnie started working any job he could at his age to help and support his family until 2 years later, his mother followed his father in death with illness. That was when his uncle stepped in and raised the boys himself, and by that, he sent them off to boarding school.

His experience was mixed, both good and bad, and he was only pulled out early after an incident with another boy. He was punished and forced to continue his studies at home. He was studying to become a lawyer like his uncle, to make big money and look after his brother himself. And then, he was drafted into the war. The only thing that brought him peace of mind was his friend, Danny. He had been at the boarding school he attended as a child. They stuck through thick and then together, but it was near the end of the war that Danny was blown to bits in front of Lonnie.

When he returned home, he instead went into law enforcement. Solving cases, helping those he could, dating, sex, being far from his uncle, was his everyday life. Then came along Arthur Reed. He was not fond of the man simply for being his partner, but he grew on him. And now he's one of his favorite people.

HISTORY:
James came from the perfect little white picket fence family, except that it wasn't all that perfect. His dad was a dick and his mother always rolled over for the man. He vowed never to be like his own father when he got a family of his own. But his life turned out messier than he had planned and far from the traditional tracks.

In high school, he discovered his attraction to the same sex on top of the opposite sex. He pushed it away and ignored it, something he was able to do well when he met and fell in love with a female classmate named Rosemary. Not long into their dating, they were surprised with a pregnancy, but they decided to stay together and have the baby. Their parents were disappointed and ashamed, it was worse with them being in a small town. But the young couple made it work.

Rosemary miscarried. It hurt the couple severely, more so with people continuously whispering about it. They were better together than apart and later married, but when they tried again and again, they were unsuccessful to have another child. It seemed when they were ready to give it that she had gotten pregnant with Paul.

When their son was four, Rosemary dropped dead on the kitchen floor. It was an aneurysm. Widowed with a four-year-old, James turned to alcoholism. His mother helped to raise Paul until she grew sick and passed away. It has been him and his son ever since.

Peggy has one of those rags to riches stories. She was born as the third and youngest daughter of a family working every day to make ends meet. Her mother made sure she and her sisters were fed and dressed decently but otherwise would neglect them. And their father, he was the kindest man somedays, others cold and callous. They were unaware at the time what was wrong with the man ... it was just how old dad was.

Despite this, Peggy had dreams of grandeur, far brighter than the dingy, small apartment they were holed up in. She was going to be a singer or an actress and she would be married to a good man who would love her and they would have three kids. Two boys and a girl. She was not going to make any compromises for her future regardless of the ridicule her sisters jabbed her with all the time.

She considered her story a Cinderella story. She grew up to be the prettiest of her sisters and the second to be married at a young age when a doctor at the hospital, she frequented for her mother's health, showed interest in her. He was ... kind, it was a loveless marriage. Which she only recognized after his first affair. And on one of his rendezvous, he died a horrible death, being shot and killed during a street robbery.

Only a few years after his death did Peggy remarry. Her childhood friend was a pilot. It was during that marriage did they realize there was something different from her, her mental health ... They worked through it and still found peace happiness together. Something that quickly faded when passed away from Cancer.

Peggy didn't want to marry again, but when an older gentleman with a hand in showbiz showed interest in her kindly, she accepted it. Needless to say, it was horrible. The most verbally abusive person she had to live with, occasionally physical. She only found solace in a friend that happened to be male. Rumors spread about their relation, nothing Peggy could diffuse. But then her husband died, this time of a sudden heart attack. And that only incited more talk.

So, she skipped the big city and tried her luck in a small town where no one knew her name.

{ Background }

The story of Glenn is simple: a half-Korean, half-Caucasian kid with an immigrant mother and a white father with too much money and too much time. Originally from a poor neighborhood in tight-packed Seoul, his mother met his father during one of his infamous business trips, when she was 20 and he was 42, where they then happily married, and moved into a white-picket fence house in North Beach, San Francisco, under the guise of a perfect newlywed couple. Although his father promised to stick around after his mother became pregnant with Glenn, he quickly broke that promise by divorcing her and moving on to a second wife only a few months later.

Leaving his mother to struggle through being both an immigrant in a foreign country and a low-class mother with very little to her name, so in order for her to raise him, she had to work multiple 9 to 5 jobs throughout the entirety of his childhood. Unfortunately, during Glenn's junior year of high school, she suffered a terrible stroke that left her emotionally scarred and paralyzed from the waist down. This led to his grades dropping since he had quickly become the sole income provider for their two person household in which medical bills were heftier than their house bills and their unpaid mortgage. In fact his grades became so terrible that he was unable to graduate. Instead of redoing the year again, he simply dropped out after his senior year and took on more jobs to make up for his lack of diploma.

While this helped them gradually acquire a steady enough income, pay off most of the debts left by his father, and even partial mortgage of their house, it also stripped Glenn of some of his childhood, his freedom, and his sense of self-worth. Su-Min underwent a very toxic and manipulative constitution during this period because of the tragic events surrounding her accident, the fact that she was recently disabled, and how her husband abandoned her. Turning towards emotionally and mentally abusing her son, or on more dire occasions, even physically harming him. When Glenn's 20th birthday approached, his father apologized for partially causing the issues and offered the two a one-million dollar check, a phone number and an address to reach out to him if they needed more money.

In spite of Su-Min's opposition to both the money and contacting the man, her son, who was in a tight spot and in need of freedom, accepted all of the offers. The money he received was spent on buying an old, but somewhat pricey studio in Colorado far from both of his parents, and he enlisted his mother into a luxurious care home despite her objections.

Having dealt with all of this, he packed up his possessions and moved to Rifle, Colorado. There, the only job available for someone without a diploma was as a chef at the only diner in town, which with his self-taught culinary skills, was best fit for him.

HISTORY:
Born as the third son of banker Park there really isn't much to worry about for Yong-min. He had two brother who had secured the future of the family. Both of them more charming and smarter as well than the young Yong-min who only knew how to play. Not that he minded the label. He was in the position of privilege and freedom as well as wealth where he could set out to do anything he wishes, which is exactly what Yong-min did; do whatever he wishes. It serves at the root of a great deal of shenanigans, one worse than the other all the while he picked up friends for life on the road.

Despite his status and his somewhat gullible personality Yong-min never had trouble with creating friendships. His careless attitude and sometimes even flippant behaviour towards his education and privileges worked as a shield and a charm for those who wanted to use him for their own gains and those that found relief from an otherwise rigid culture. A valuable gain for a friend of Yong-min is that they never lack an adventure and thus will never be bored due to the whimsicality of the male. The only price they have to pay is part of their sanity when he wakes them up in the middle of the nights to discuss his newest obsession. What is even more annoying for his peers is the effortless way in which Yong-min lives, as he always finds himself in the top ranks despite the lack of visible effort. It is a combination that either deserves praise or scorn on which his environment is undecided on. His family at least seem to be fine with what their youngest offspring is doing. As long as he is performing they don't interfere with his hobbies.

HISTORY:
Born and raised in Rifle, Colorado Alodia doesn't really know anything else but Rifle. Growing up in a small town had its ups and downs. The up is that she knows everyone, and that everyone knows her. The down is that everyone knows her, and so they are aware of her condition to a degree. As a child Alodia was considered to be 'hard of hearing' in the way that teachers had to constantly address her with decreasing patience to get her to listen. When she grew older her environment blamed her for being inattentive and not listening. For Alodia the world was a muted buzz. A place with too much sound and yet not loud enough to discern any. There was too much going on, yet she would feel her phone vibrate and not realise it was ringing as well, yet she wouldn't be able to hear the door bell if she was in the back of the house, and neither could she hear or understand questions if she didn't read the lips.

It grew all the more frustrating when she grew older and her grades started to suffer. Why couldn't she just understand the words? When the female started to mention how her own name was 'pink' people would look at her strangely. When she started to tell others what colour their name sounded like they laughed at her, none making the connection really how Alodia's brain was wired and that it worked differently from others, that it didn't fit within the traditional education system. It was isolating to the female, who was already behind in the world so filled with sound.

Art was the only engine from which Alodia could express herself in a world that tried so little to understand her. Who would have figured that she was actually any good in it? Alodia certainly hadn't and as she spent more and more time with her own art she started to feel a little better in this world so full of sound that she couldn't quite discern. So much so that she would stay up late night, sleeping at school. Eventually dropping out of high school Alodia had found a new armour to harness herself with; pretending to sleep in public so that people wouldn't approach her, or guilt her for not hearing them, and so a new persona was born.

Background
Lance was born in Oklahoma. His father was a strict but successful agriculturist who had both an expansive property and a thriving cattle herd. His mother was once a city girl, who had moved to the rural area chasing an idealised dream. Unfortunately, she found her reality far from the life she had imagined. The more years she spent in Oklahoma, the harder her disposition became. Her dissatisfaction bled down into her children, especially Lance.

Even as a child, Lance was spirited and outgoing. He made friends easily and had a habit of leading those friends into questionable adventures, but he was as good at getting out of trouble as he was at getting into it. Despite his antics, he found his small world constraining and dreamt of far bigger things for himself.

His interest in the greater world was intensified just before his teen years when his aunt made an extended visit from California. She was dazzle and glitz like he had never seen before. And she described a world that sounded vibrant compared to his. After she left, he suffered out his mundanity for a couple more years, during which he excelled in school and took up work to start his savings. At sixteen, he convinced his aunt to come let him live with her.

The city proved to be everything he hoped. He thrived in the crowds and stimulation. He found friends as easily as he had back home and attended many social events. Having graduated early, he also picked up his university education the semester after his arrival. He was a hardworking and skilled student who progressed swiftly into law school before graduating with flying colours. He has since spent his time making something of a good reputation for himself.

Background
Roswell was born in Tennessee to a middle class family. Originally a standard nuclear family, things changed first when Roswell's maternal grandfather died and his grandmother moved in with the young family. Things took another turn when his dad died of an infection when he was still quite young. Roswell was already a studious child but his father's death had him retreat even further into academics and studies. During this time, to pick up a bit of extra money while his mother worked, he took up tutoring and found he enjoyed it a great deal. Roswell eventually went on to pursue academics and becoming a professor.

Background
Billy was born as the third of four children to a working class family in Kentucky. His family was far from well off, and things only became worse when his father was conscripted into the war. When his father came back things were even worse. The man had grown bitter and taken to alcoholism to cope with the war. This left a lot of the burden on Billy and his siblings. The strained relationship with his family had him eventual leave Kentucky in search of work elsewhere. He doesn't stay anywhere too long but he has been enjoying his time in Waffleville.
