We all have our opinions about violence, right? What we think is acceptable violence, what makes us cringe, what is unforgivable. When we watch TV or the news we see things we may or may not agree with. Perhaps we even find some violence entertaining. Maybe we even like inflicting violence.

Characters too have their own perceptions and feelings about violence. Better yet, for characters you can actually APPLY that in your settings and roleplays with their reactions to violence, or in how they conduct violence.

In this exercise, you are going to detail out your character's opinions, habits, and responses to VIOLENCE.

Here are some things you can think about:
  • Was your character raised around violence?
  • How do they feel about violence in general?
  • Do they get in to physical fights willingly or unwillingly?
  • Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun? (Horror/Torture movies, Gladiator Sports, Boxing, Knife fights, etc) What kind do they enjoy? Are they things that are considering "acceptable" violence by society, or terrifying things?
  • Do they believe that some violence is justified? (Bunching a bully, killing a murderer, etc) What situations would they approve of it in?
  • Will they themselves use violence to stop other people from using it?
  • Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?
  • Does seeing violence upset them? To frowning? Crying?
  • What kind of violence are they exposed to every day in their present life?

And as always, if you think of extra details to add, please do!

  • Was your character raised around violence?
Kaycee was abandoned as an infant. No one could touch her and, as such, burned her mother alive from the inside out during labor. She was fortunately found by a elderly man during his travels, who passed away when Kaycee was only ten, and was left to rely on her influence over fire and other perks. Being a child of the apocalypse, everyday was struggled for survival. Kaycee was not only born into violence, raised around violence, and adapted violent tendencies herself, she lived and reveled in violence; in the destruction her fire can bring.
  • How do they feel about violence in general?
Kaycee, though stoic and, overall, emotionless on the outside, won't hesitate to burn one alive for making one wrong move towards her and scaring her half to death. There are no second chances and there is no 'last resort'. Though, how violent the perpetrator's death is varies depending on how much she feels they deserve it. She's skiddish, so tread carefully around her. It's a wonder she has friends...
  • Do they get in to physical fights willingly or unwillingly?
As surprising as it may be; no, Kaycee will not initiate a fight or put very much effort in defending herself. She's lazy on top of being skiddish, one of the reasons she has yet to bother learning control of her fire, and will try to avoid confrontation if she has to do more work than what she sees as necessary. Attack her blindingly and leave an opening, and you're doomed. The exception is finding away to rile her up to the point she craves torturing you.
  • Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun? (Horror/Torture movies, Gladiator Sports, Boxing, Knife fights, etc) What kind do they enjoy? Are they things that are considering "acceptable" violence by society, or terrifying things?
Once in a while Kaycee'll be found loitering around the pits but, seeing as she wound up being the informant for a local gang, she's normally observing and gathering intel more than indulging in the brutality. Violence doesn't effect her and she sees enough of it on a daily basis to shrug it off. Anything out of the ordinary will definitely pique her interest.

As for society; living in an apocalyptic world isn't for the kind-hearted or weak willed. Kill or be killed. Some will say the seen it all until they come across someone like Kaycee.
  • Do they believe that some violence is justified? (Bunching a bully, killing a murderer, etc) What situations would they approve of it in?
Attack her or prove you are 'unworthy' of surviving let alone thriving and Kaycee won't hesitate to end you. Prove mentally unstable and a threat to yourself and she'll end you. Prove to be a disturbance to the way the gang is ran and she'll end you. Scare her and she'll end you.
  • Will they themselves use violence to stop other people from using it?
If Kaycee sees someone attacking a pedestrian or an armed person attacking an unarmed person, she'll step in and out right kill the offender. The a person is threatening the safely of a child she'll outright slaughter the offender and might even crack a smile while doing so.
  • Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?
Kinda. It all depends on how you look at things and if Kaycee isn't being her normal, lazy self.
  • Does seeing violence upset them? To frowning? Crying?
Nope; not at all.
  • What kind of violence are they exposed to every day in their present life?
Murder, abuse, plundering, and occasionally rape against those not in the gang [punishable by death].

  • Was your character raised around violence?
Daywren grew up in a relatively quiet town whose main economy was agriculture. Most of the violence he saw were simple fistfights, which never went far enough to be traumatic to any party. Violence was discouraged, you would be sent home from school for hitting someone or even shouting at them. Lawful justice was usually served through jailtime or other nonviolent forms of punishment.

How do they feel about violence in general?
  • Present-day Daywren sees Violence as an exceedingly efficient method to get results. It is his first choice for solving any situation.
  • Do they get in to physical fights willingly or unwillingly?
As a Dark Forces General, Daywren usually has minions to throw his punches for him, but he keeps fit and loves the exhilaration of a one on one battle
  • Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun?
Violence for fun is seen by him as a pointless waste of energy. To Daywren, Violence is a tool to achieve results, whether the results are subservience, victory of a battle, or setting an example. He enjoys seeing tools used well and efficiently, and usually attends battles to watch them in progress

  • Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?
He unwinds with boxing and martial training, but views it as a tool, not a toy.
  • How have their views on violence changed over time?
As a child, Daywren was extremely passive and sheltered, and had almost no way to fight back when his village was overcome by the dark forces. Abducted as a shoulder, he was passive, and went along with everything to avoid a fight. He learned quickly that the only ones who got what they wanted were those who had the strength to force it into happening. He threw himself into his training as a soldier with renewed vigour, and became enthralled with the art of war, quickly rising to the rank of General, favoured by the Dark Lord for his bloodlust.

  • Was your character raised around violence?

No, his mother was from a pacifistic race and his father's race where he grew up is largely peaceful and relies on agriculture and trading mostly. The calm and collected mind was encouraged, occupations in religion, architecture, teaching and art are common and desired, blacksmiths make more everyday items than weapons.

  • How do they feel about violence in general?

Growing up he saw it as intriguing and a bit intimidating and he mostly shared the peaceful mind of his people although he was always more restless.
Now a days Daem sees violence as a fun and interesting past time, especially a dangerous battle with no certain outcome sets his blood boiling, however his experience has left him tired and weary of large wars.

  • Do they get in to physical fights willingly or unwillingly?

Daem willingly initiates fights more for fun than for stealing or proving a point, if he's bored he'll start a fight with or without weapons.

  • Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun? (Horror/Torture movies, Gladiator Sports, Boxing, Knife fights, etc) What kind do they enjoy? Are they things that are considering "acceptable" violence by society, or terrifying things?

Not overly so, to him it's much more enjoyable to be in the thick of things than it is to watch fights or fighting sports.

  • Do they believe that some violence is justified? (Bunching a bully, killing a murderer, etc) What situations would they approve of it in?

Following his own sence of justice and moral Daem is often on the more illegal side as he fights and battles when he wants to but he can also help the innocent or weak from tougher people, killing murderers is not uncommon for hm but he generally doesn't do it so people can see it's him. Daem is sensitive about appearing like a good guy.

  • Will they themselves use violence to stop other people from using it?

Yes, being both a fighter for fun and an old warrior Daem doesn't shy away from using what he enoys to stop someone from doing something.

  • Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?

Not in that definition, sure he enjoys fighting and doesn't really give a damn about killing someone but he doesn't slaughter people for fun or take pleasure in torture. If you entered into a fight, especially with a weapon, you entered with the knowledge that ultimate defeat can follow, that's how he sees it. Daem has seen too much senseless death on battlefields to enjoy vicious violence especially against people who can't defend themselves.

  • Does seeing violence upset them? To frowning? Crying?

Nope, he has seen so much through his life that it takes a lot to surprise him.

  • What kind of violence are they exposed to every day in their present life?
Fistfights, skirmishes, maybe a bar figth or a duel with swords, it differs day to day and sometimes even Daem enjoys a break.

Was your character raised around violence?
Sebastian Du Lancre aka Massion De Medich was not raised around violence, in fact, in his human life, his parents tried to shield him at all costs from the perils of the world. He had a seemingly normal life until dying at the age of 25.
How do they feel about violence in general?
At the moment, being a vampire, he is rather indifferent towards it. He's not bothered by it but at the same time he does not relish in it unless it concerns his enemies. Now, should he kill a foe, he's quite pleased.
Do they get in to physical fights willingly or unwillingly?
Both willingly and unwillingly. At times he is drawn into battle while trying to protect someone and at others he is pursued by the Vampire Council whom want him dead....ashed.
Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun? (Horror/Torture movies, Gladiator Sports, Boxing, Knife fights, etc)
Only when it concerns his enemy.
What kind do they enjoy? Are they things that are considering "acceptable" violence by society, or terrifying things?
Bodily torture of enemies, dismemberment, screaming, enemy vampires burning up in the sun.
Do they believe that some violence is justified? (Bunching a bully, killing a murderer, etc) What situations would they approve of it in?
He believes all violence is justified. You can't simply prick a vampire or werewolf and expect them to die. Situations where the enemy seems to gain the upper hand is a justifiable reason to use violence.
Will they themselves use violence to stop other people from using it?
If someone is using violence against another then yes, Massion would step in to exact the same.
Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?
No he's not. He only takes pleasure in watching his enemies suffer exceptionally.
Does seeing violence upset them? To frowning? Crying?
Absolutely not. He may frown when an innocent is killed but crying is never acceptable to him. In any case.
What kind of violence are they exposed to every day in their present life?
Humans being massacred by both vampire and werewolf alike, humans being used for blood, the usual.

Was your character raised around violence?

Ty was raised around violence. In fact, she was taken in as a child and raised to be an assassin.

How do they feel about violence in general?

At first, violence was just an everyday thing. She was raised to kill, so she felt nothing of it. Once she got out of the 'business' and settled down with her new family, she became a pacifist. Now, she believes violence is only needed if absolutely necessary.

Do they get into physical fights willingly or unwillingly?

Sometimes Ty may be dragged into fights unwillingly. Most of the time she tries to avoid them. There will be times that she may condone fighting in order to protect herself or a loved one.

Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun? (Horror/Torture movies, Gladiator Sports, Boxing, Knife fights, etc) What kind do they enjoy? Are they things that are considering "acceptable" violence by society, or terrifying things?

Ty has nothing against anyone else and their ideas of violence. Movies are merely movies, so she has no problem with it. Other occasions, everything else dealing with violence is just a waste of her time.

Do they believe that some violence is justified? (Bunching a bully, killing a murderer, etc) What situations would they approve of it in?

When it comes to protecting the ones she loves, violence is justified. If there is no other way than to fight, then it is also justified.

Will they themselves use violence to stop other people from using it?

She's had to violently stop a group of people from attacking her in order to stop them. If others are using violence and she has to stop them, she'll do what she sees fit whether it be containing them or killing them.

Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?

No. Not at all.

Does seeing violence upset them? To frowning? Crying?

Ty tries to keep her nose out of others' problems, but seeing innocent people get killed may make her frown. She has never cried over something like it though.

What kind of violence are they exposed to every day in their present life?

When she was an assassin, her everyday life consisted of killing people. When she tried 'quitting' they went after her to end her. Now, fortunately, she isn't exposed to violence in her present life.

Jackal (Jack Singer)
  • Was your character raised around violence?
Yes and no. He lived a happy life until he got into magic. His father did not approve of him wanting to be a magician so in the teens years he started getting a little physical in hopes that he could show his son what a worthless career it would be.
  • How do they feel about violence in general?
He could care less. Jackal is not right in the head and therefore has little opinion on it either way, that is until the violence is directed at him. Once that happens he will seek revenge, even if the 'violent' act was only something small and easily forgivable.
  • Do they get in to physical fights willingly or unwillingly?
Once the voice starts to speak to him he will easily seek a fight. A good thing is the voice only shows up when he feels he has been wronged. The bad thing is that he does not fight fair or care what age the person who wronged him is.
  • Do they enjoy watching violent things for fun? (Horror/Torture movies, Gladiator Sports, Boxing, Knife fights, etc) What kind do they enjoy? Are they things that are considering "acceptable" violence by society, or terrifying things?
No. Jackal is a very simple individual. He enjoys doing magic and being in the spotlight. If it is not about him he could care less.
  • Do they believe that some violence is justified? (Bunching a bully, killing a murderer, etc) What situations would they approve of it in?
As long as it is not directed towards him he does not have too much thought on it. People are free to do what they want to others.
  • Will they themselves use violence to stop other people from using it?
To use violence to stop people from using it on him? Yes. To use violence to stop people from harming others? Nope
  • Are they a sadistic psycho who uses violence for the pleasure of it?
This is difficult to answer since it is a little of both. As long as things go his way everything is fine and he won't harm anyone. Once something happens that he does not like the voice starts talking and he loses control. At this time he will use whatever he can to cause harm. As for if it is pleasurable, I have no clue. For this character, that question is like asking a normal person if breathing is pleasurable.
  • Does seeing violence upset them? To frowning? Crying?
Not at all.
  • What kind of violence are they exposed to every day in their present life?
Just the violence he creates.
