Unpopular Opinions

Those that were mentioned before with some alterations (So skip if you're not a fan of repeats)
  • Society is way too sensitive/easily offended, by everything. Cat-calling, Dark Humor, One's possession of a penis or white skin, Swear Words. It's fucking ridiculous.
  • Free Speech > People's Feelings
  • Religion is an outdated, ancient forum of reasoning that lacks scientific backing and was used to justify great atrocities. Even today is destroys the education and lives of millions. The fact the majority of the population still follows this stuff is shameful.
  • "Cultural Appropriation" isn't a thing, Culture changes all the time.
  • Sex or even Physical contact isn't needed for a happy relationship. It definitely helps, and can be outright amazing, but it's not the only thing holding it together... And if it is, you need a new relationship.
  • Nor is being in a relationship vital for someone to be happy in general.
  • Incest and Polygamy are fine if all members are consenting adults.
  • To demonize Pedophilia is the same as demonizing Homosexuality. Both are sexual attractions that one is born is and has no choice in, it should be the act of child molestation that angers people, not the base presence of sexual attraction.
  • Chosen Relations >>> Blood Relations
  • More Government funding/higher taxes could do wonders to fix a lot of issues including slow health care, lack of education etc. If only the governments didn't get such hard on's over fighter jets (Canada) or making an army larger than their next 19 allies combined (America).
  • Before Child Birth a Man should be able to opt out of supporting a child just like the mother can. But once the child is born, both parents are stuck (exception being to cases where the mother purposely hides the child from the father until after birth).
  • Feminism is outdated and has turned into a hate group. MRA's have far more logic and reason to them than Feminists do. But neither are groups I would sign on with because I feel joining a movement that focuses/specializes on one sexes issues is missing the bigger picture, which is why I'm an Egalitarian.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion is awful, from what I've seen it's poorly animated, voice acted, features a main character who masturbates to unconcious women, and loses all credibility for stuff like 'deeper meanings' when it's very author comes out saying he simply used Bible names cause it sounded cool, and that anyone who thought it was something deep is an idiot.
  • What an employee does with their facebook should not be an employer's concern. Can they do the job? Can they behave professionally at work? Do they get along with the staff? That's all that should matter. The employer being able discriminate on hiring because of personal bias and/or the workers personal lives should be made illegal.
  • The whole "everyone's special/unique, everybody wins" mentality with children is ruining people. It creates people who are not only ill-equipped for failure, but it set's up mentalities that they are inherently better than others simply because they're constantly being praised as special. I'll even admit to having this issue as a kid, having a sort of superiority complex as a child because my Mom did this (Granted that was also partially a defence mechanism against bullying for my Autism though). I mean I get it, you love your child, you sincerely see them as special and unique because they are special to you and your feelings. But remember that every parent see's their children that way for the same reason and it can help to remember that fact.
  • Medical Care, College & University should be government funded. Both are things everyone should have free and easy access too if we want an intelligent, healthy and well educated society.
  • Legalize all the Drugs, they're either harmless or you're keeping it out of criminal hands. Greatly cutting down on the amount of people killed in criminal trades/deals, you get rid of the "It's taboo so it's cool" trait that can draw some people into it, you make it so people no longer need to fear criminal charges for seeking help, and by legalizing weed you prevent it from functioning as a gateway drug (via removing it from illegal environments).
  • Being violent and sexist is a result of poor/abusive parenting, mental illness and/or a lot of bullying, it is not the result of media or video games.
  • People majority of the time look better without make-up than with make-up. Like whenever I'm in a relationship I always find my girlfriend at the time the most attractive when she's without any form of make up.
Those that go against the crowd here
  • Children are not annoying (unless if you live with them, then I can see how they get on peoples nerves time to time), or disgusting. But neither are they perfect angels, where although I'm finding my motivation to work in a field around other people's children drained I am still 110% eager to become a Father someday.
  • The Death Penalty is a waste. I understand the sentiment, but stuff like In-Jail Community service would allow a lot of work to get done that is otherwise lacking. And it gives those 1 in 100 wrongful cases a chance to be proven innocent without seeing 99 go home free.
  • People becoming involved with technology is not a sign of humanity going backwards. It's a sign of technological progress, evolution and adaption. You prefer being outdoors? Fine that's your personal preference, I hold no ill-will or negative judgements towards you. But don't you turn around and then try to vilify everyone who isn't like you as being broken or wrong somewhere. I don't care if people used to be more like you in the past, just because history did it doesn't mean it's best.
  • Physical Punishment/Discipline for children should be shamed. If you as a parent can only control your child through violence then perhaps you just aren't a person who deserves to be listened to in the first place. Not to mention how much pain and emotional disconnect and fear it can cause for your child. Now, physically picking up and moving your child because they keep running off? Completely fine. Swatting their hand away before they place it on a burning hot stove? Do it, that's essentially choosing a lesser of two pains. But purposely inflicting pain on your child? You should be losing your right as a Parent for that.
  • Racism and Sexism (in the 1st world, and not including feminism/tumblrisms) does still exists, and it certainly is far more present that it should be for humanity to be patting ourselves on the back. But to claim it's the epidemic it's being made out to be? I think people are seriously letting Media Hysteria get to them.

New Ones
  • I don't really care for any Mainstream music. Not because it's mainstream though, my preference just lies with Instrumental Music which is rarely Mainstream.
  • Drafts and Conscription should be abolished. If we ever face a situation where most people going to war in unavoidable enough people should be able to recognize the situation and sign up on their own, all drafting does is force people in who are more mentally prepared/capable for war. Where being there could destroy them, even in a time of total war there are needs for people other than soldiers.
  • Teachers and Police Officers need to be able to get fired far more easily. I'm not going to join the bandwagon of "Cops are Racist Pricks lol!", but I will admit that when the rare Cop does go bad they have way too much legal protection behind them.
  • I'm not a big fan of skinny girls, I prefer there to be at least some meat on those bones. Generally average to slightly above average is the preference.
  • This growing "Play to Learn" approach taking child care centres by storm is ridiculously stupid. It gives the ECE's a feel good sensation that their children are developing well because they can stretch things to the extreme, grasping at straws to connect it to learning. Claiming to be supported by studies that say doing so makes 'better developed children', despite that being a Subjective term to begin with and something one can't easily measure or determine. Sure the children might have a blast running around playing all day, but they've been left completely unprepared for Grade 1 when they enter school. Where if their teacher isn't some miracle worker you just started a snowball effect that's going to sabotages that child's entire educational future. Now I get making children engaged with learning, just throwing worksheets at the child expecting them to magically pick it up isn't the best solution either. But at least with worksheets they're actually tackling the content/curriculum rather than simply giving up and saying "Go play, I'll go fill out an Activity Sheet explaining how this teaches you skills needed for school" (And this isn't meant as a bragging point, but I think it should say something when one of their students who consistently get's 90's and up on assignments is speaking up against this and calling it bullshit).
Stuff I agree with but I don't think is an unpopular opinion
  • Recycling should be more wide-spread. Like seriously, I know of nobody who looks poorly on this.
  • Leftover food should get composted, like recycling everyone agree's green is better.

>People who complain about society being oversenstive are just mad that they act like shitheads and being called out on it. Likewise, people who ask for people to grow a thicker skin are asshats who want their actions and words to be without consequences. They are afraid that society is evolving passed their cynical standpoint, and they can't keep up.

You jinxed it. Batten down the hatches everyone, prepare for the incoming shitstorm. :P
Jorick, I think it's not working!! Is Iwaku too mature for internet shitstorm ranting debate? :O ...Thanks Diana. (Like the "Thanks Obama" meme, only replace Obama with Diana. Now I explained the joke, I am a horrible joker... Heath Ledger is best joker)

Inb4 people saying, "No! Jack Nicholson/Jared Leto is best Joker."

I think it's one of those things where it's so easily abused into being a debate that everyone just unconsciously agree's to call a truce in order to avoid the complete and utter shit storm that it would turn into otherwise.

So far my thread hasn't gone up in flames, and we're on the third page. This is good progress. Very good progress.

Not to mention it's kind of pointless to start shit on an "unpopular opinions" thread.

Like, of course you're not going to agree with everything you see here. That's why they're unpopular opinions. So what good is starting a debate about any of them? The person posting an opinion you disagree with already knows their opinion is in the minority, that's why they posted it here. Why would you even bother going out of your way to say "you're wrong" when the poster probably already knows that most people feel that way?

Plus, it would be fucking exhausting, trying to start shit about every single opinion one disagrees with on here. There are just too many unpopular opinions that most people are bound to disagree with.

I'm glad to see we all have controlled ourselves well. I admit that my urge to argue has occasionally intensified while reading this thread.

Additionally:

I don't think people have become "too sensitive". I think we're starting to live in a world where not only are we much more accepting of different races, gender identities, sexualities, ideas, etc, but we're also a lot more mindful of people's emotions and mental health and the effect we have on others, and I think the pros of that more than outweigh the cons. Yes, there will always be instances of people taking this too far and becoming a nuisance, but, I think that, radical outliers aside, the overall mindset and environment we're moving into is a good one.

Too tempting to pass up here, the no-debate stance with the unpopular opinions...

* God is good.

* Children are precious for the sole fact that they are the hands and feet and eyes and minds that shape the future. Anyone who torments a child physically or sexually - much less murders a child - should be put to death, and may their wretched souls rot in Hell.

* There is a Hell, and a Heaven too.

* Unborn babies are human beings.

* Rap, reggae, the Beatles and anything by Jimmy Buffett sucks. All of it.

* Orange-flavored Starburst and Skittles candies are so disappointing. Milk chocolate is pretty *meh* too, unless it's on a Reese's peanut butter cup.

* Anime is awful. All of it. Yes, even the crap someone will invariably want to PM me, convinced that I just haven't seen THEIR favorite anime that will convert me to loving it. *shudders with the horror*

* As much as I enjoy portions of the universe he created and some of the characters, George R.R. Martin is an example of an author who got "too big for his britches" (and this is not a crack on his physical size). I believe every author needs two things as much as the air he breathes: honest editors who will sit you down and say, "This over here was wonderful, but this here? Dull as dirt. Move your characters. Make plot. This shit you've got here is boring;" and then the humility to admit where they are wrong, see their mistakes and fix them.

* The vast majority of the public education system has dumbed down the curriculum so badly that too many high school graduates are functionally illiterate, have a pitiful grasp of history, and are nigh incapable of critical thinking. Even in college, most students are taught to happily regurgitate whatever idiocy liberal arts professors spout off as the latest social justice fill-in-the-blank cause, OR just shut up and don't say what they really think so they don't piss off the professor and can get a good grade.

* Neither socialism nor communism has worked anywhere in the world at any time, and trying it out again and again because "we mean well" and "we'll get it right this time" ignores both human nature and epitomizes the definition of 'willful ignorance.'

* I should be able to own any gun I want to own, and carry it with me loaded, so long as I am neither a criminal, nor severely mentally ill and a proven danger to myself or others.

* Bacon, ham, chili, strawberries, watermelon and plain salted peanuts are gross. Seriously, disgusting.

Spock is one of the worst examples of logic. In a universe where everyone's culture and reasonings differ, expecting one single being's logic to be the basis of everyone's views is not just a selfish act but very ignorant. Yet people adore the character, including myself. Humanity makes no sense.

Adoring sports over education is ridiculous.

Taste becomes redundant after the first bite.

While recognizing flaws is advised, pointing out negatives in someone consistantly only reveals the flaws in yourself. This is an unpopular opinion when geared towards those who do this.

Funny story actually. I was talking with my mother in the kitchen when I was super young and for some reason I put my hand on the stove (I thought it was turned off) So I'm like "OWWWWWWW!!!!!!' And my mom was like "Well what did you expect to happen when you put your hand on a hot stove? XD" (The XD was her laughing a bit)

And thus, I've never made that mistake ever again o.o (I think sometimes its necessary to learn the hard way.)

Interestingly enough, my friends older sister hates her mother because she was never disciplined as a child. She's older now and made many mistakes because her mother never teached her the lessons she needed while growing up as a child. finding a "Right" answer for that subject is hard DX Most people I know who weren't disciplined, wished they were. Most people I know who were disciplined are glad they were, and on the other hand when I come to the internet, people don't think discipline should be a thing, and those people turn out pretty fine also. Many say that it depends on the child, but I feel like people want 1 single universal choice and will slowly force it into law so it hardly even matters who's right, but the opinion of whoever has more power (Which isn't always the right answer)

I feel like this depends a lot on how you define "discipline".

Because it's still possible to punish a child without physically hurting them. A child can "learn lessons" that they need to learn without physical punishment being involved. I think most people would still agree that parents should still discipline their kids, just not by hitting them.

Er, not that I'm trying to start a debate or nothin' -- just thought I'd shed a little light on that subject.

JUST TO MAKE CLEAR!!!!!!! I'm not debating anything XD I'm someone who likes to find solutions to problems. There's a problem, and I wanna find a potential solution to it. I think it's worth discussing at the very least ^^

Anyway, I wish you were 500% Correct... But some children... o.o

Lets take the youngest in that same family (My friends younger brother... It's a wonder how my friend turned out so well) This boy has no boundaries. You yell at him? He'll scream back/hit you. You yell more/ground him? He'll yell more and start slamming stuff.

Another example is one day I was walking, and this random kid walked up to me from the park to the side starts randomly cussing at me. I look up at his (Mother/sister?) and she looks at ME like I'M about to be the bad guy?????

My point/question is, what are you suppose to do when a child wont listen? If all you get by yelling/talking/grounding is retaliation and things broken? What "Discipline" do you do then that isn't physical? Counseling? They'll lie to the counselor and may end up getting themself taken away, along with their siblings. A simple talk? If only DX I personally see no other option for the children of the above. But maybe you do, and that's why I'm asking ^^

I also got thinking about your "The pro's outweigh the cons of the whole "too sensitive" thing.
In the grander, and most grandest picture (Like one even I can barely comprehend) you're most likely right. Thing is though, I've been exposed to just about nothing but strictly the darkness of it (As has most people, apparently here too since they say things have gone too far like I do) I don't know if you read my previous post on that and the toxicity, but there is a major problem, and although the pros outweigh the cons (at first anyway) I think it's becoming just as, or maybe even more important to start focusing on those cons and fixing them. Too many innocent people are getting mentally WRECKED for things that they either didn't do, or things that's they did that's not even that bad. (I'm sure you heard of that scientist who landed something on a comet. But what he did is now mute and doesn't matter because he was wearing a "Sexist" shirt... That his female friend designed, made, and told him to wear and he did out of respect. But that doesn't matter because now he's a sexist pig to a huge portion of the internet, and one person can only handle so much. I mean 1 bad comment in 1000 good comments can ruin your day. What should have been the best day of anyones life quickly turned into the worst day of anyones life.

I've tried working with the good ones too, I've tried working to find a way to perhaps fix the feminist name, to try and get people a bit more organized, but for some reason, even the good people in these groups fight against the general public, and NOT what caused their group/other to be so looked down on in the first place. Their name got hijacked and ruined, and they act like its our fault, attacking us for trying to help or mention it (Which makes me think they know it, but its easier to deflect and go after us for mentioning it instead of actually fixing the problem)

It's just hard to understand, especially the fact that the good people in these groups somehow never hear of the atrocities that happen WITH their group name, they act like people just decided to go after them for no apparent reason, no matter how much people explain why they are retaliating.

So my main point/question is, what do you think a solution is to this problem? Because I've tried, and failed miserably XP Weather I succeed or fail doesn't effect me personally in the slightest because i'm a care free white male, but I still wanna make things right. Problem is, the bad ones and the good ones both fight against the wrong people, the ones trying to help, it's almost like they are addicted to the drama or something DX

  • Sometimes you just got to treat a hoe like a hoe. Way too many guys put the pussy on a pedestal then complain on Internet forums how 'Nice guys finish last!'.
  • There is no such thing as the 'friendzone'. There is such a thing however as a she-doesn't-want-your-dick-zone. Learn the difference.
  • It doesn't matter what your obsession is whether it's religion, anime, or furries - the Golden Rule is don't be a dipshit about it and you'll be fine. If you're wearing a ninja headband or a pin on fox tail in public though, you pretty much are asking to be harassed.
  • Equal rights go both ways. I have no idea why girls punching guys is hilarious, but the minute a guy punches back a million White Knights freak out. If you don't want to get knocked out, don't go around starting shit saying "You can't hit me, I'm a girl."
  • Music discussions and debates about 'superior tastes' and how 'the 90s/80s/70s were the best' are stupid. Also, anyone who complains on the internet about how they were born in the wrong generation just need to stop. My favorite genre of music are MP3s of gorilla mating calls and chimpanzees banging rocks together so I have the oldest music tastes therefore I win. Also, posting pictures of books on Instagram doesn't make you seem 'educated'. It shows you have basic reading capabilities. Congrats.
  • The idea of Fat Acceptance is stupid. If you want to be morbidly obese and cut your lifespan in half, I honestly don't care. Just don't expect me to applaud you for having a general lack of self control. Now, I will add the disclaimer that if it's due to a legitimate medical issue I'm not talking to that group.
  • Yes, children are smelly and usually annoying. But so were you when you were 12. Children are the future and we really ought to invest more in Education.
  • Instead of finding reasons life sucks and we're all doomed, maybe we should all just chill out a bit. Personally, I'm an Atheist and I'm hedging my bets that this is the only life we get so might as well enjoy it. Yeah, life may be pointless as we all lose everything when we die but that doesn't mean you can't discover something interesting to amuse yourself till then.
  • Japan is by far one of the most xenophobic cultures that exist and outsiders who praise it have Peter Pan syndrome.
And last but not least.
  • John Cena is the best waifu.

A few more things to add:

Despite popular belief, chocolate is disgusting.

Being intelligent is awesome, waving it in someone's face or acting better than someone who is not so gifted in that area makes you out to be nothing but an intellectual douchebag. Basically you are the jock of the smart community, not the kind loving jock, the jock with the straps riding too far up the ass.

Anime is ridiculous. Profitable, but really the plots are usually everywhere.

Legos suck.

High heels are torture devices.

Japan is by far one of the most xenophobic cultures that exist and outsiders who praise it have Peter Pan syndrome.
Haha, this one. This one is so true. There's a reason I say I like Japan's cultural history (mythology, clothing, traditions, martial arts etc) but the social systems aren't worth much. Just look at their history on how they treat their neighboring countries...

All these similar 'unpopular opinions' made me realize that they're in fact, not unpopular at all... humans sure are strange.

All these similar 'unpopular opinions' made me realize that they're in fact, not unpopular at all... humans sure are strange.

:3 That's what I find fascinating about threads like these.

Because you start out with a lot of people that are giving opinions that would probably considered "unpopular" in society at large (for example, "religion is bad", "society is too sensitive", "parents should hit their kids more", etc), but the fact that there are so many people in agreement shows that the opinions really aren't so unpopular within the Iwaku community (or at least the GC crowd).

So then, because of that, you have people posting opinions that are opposite of all these commonly shared "unpopular" ones ("religion is good", "society is not too sensitive", "parents should not hit their kids"), because reading all the opinions on this thread makes it seem like people who disagree with all these shared stances are then in the minority, even though said opinions would usually be considered to be in the majority in society at large, even though they're clearly the minority in this particular crowd.

So then you can have two opinions that are the exact opposite of each other that are both considered "unpopular", albeit in different ways.

Not to mention, it allows you to say something against commonly-repeating opinions that you disagree with, without calling out any one specific person and starting a debate regarding their specific stance on it and how they worded it. So, you then have a way for everyone to share their opinion and even go into great detail about why they feel the way they do without actually starting any debates, even on heated topics.

And I just think that's fascinating to watch. :D
