Unnamed Writing

I love to write, it's not very good, but hey, I get pleasure out of it. I have something I'm working on, continously editing, chopping, changing and adding to. I'd appreciate it if a couple of you kind-hearted souls out there would take it upon yourselves to look over my work. I tend to have an informal, chatty kind of style. Any heavy editing, advice or even compliments would be greatly appreciated. :D

Beware, I update slowly, infrequently and in chunks of varying size, for anyone who is interested.
I've seperated it out, to make it easier to read, normally, I wouldn't leave lines.

I never wanted to lead people to battle. I wanted to play a game, have some fun and maybe meet a cute guy. But things don't always go the way you plan, do they? Normally, they go quite differently.

Now about me. My name is Faye Rine, a rather ordinary name, for a seemingly ordinary person. You wouldn't pick me out in a crowd, you probably wouldn't remember if I walked past you in the street. I suppose, as the saying goes, appearances can be deceptive. An in-game elf? You must be kidding.

Well, I guess I should've started with 'Welcome to my world'. It's 2250 A.D. and the world of gaming has progressed unbelievably far. New game systems have come and gone, but the only one really worth talking about has just come out. 'Reality Games' has released the new console 'Vision' and it's unlike anything we've ever seen. Basically it's a headset which, when activated, takes you into a virtually created universe. At the moment there's only one game, Fantasy Soul.

'A game to change the world, a game to cross the boundary between the virtual world and reality, a game in which you can become the person that you want to be.' At least, that's what it said on the advert. But in reality, what was it? An indescribable journey where I gained friends, completed quests and discovered what lay in my heart. Or something like that…

Chapter 1 - Enter player 2156

I don't like the dark. I guess I'm a little afraid of the unknown, and pitch black rooms are always hiding something. Obviously.

Unfortunately, it was dark. My heart was beating fast. Unsure what to expect, having never experienced anything like this before, I stretched out my hand. My fingertips probing for something, anything solid that might exist in this virtual place. Something with substance, that was real.

A clunk and the hanging lights, six or so, flickered on. It was quite a sight, a small white room, an overlaying grid of faintly glowing green lines covering the walls, ceiling and floor. A small plinth lay in front of me, silver with outstretched wings supporting a simple black book, closed, with writing too small to make out etched upon it. I took an awkward step towards it and a hologram flickered into life beside me. No prizes for guessing who just let out the most pathetic little scream.

Actually, I think I should have started a bit further back. Set the scene, you know? 'Cause if this was someone else's story; I wouldn't know what the heck was going on. I'll rewind a bit, especially for you.

I looked at the games console, lying so innocently on my recently made bed. Whilst twisting a lock of my dark hair between my fingers, I sighed, the fingers of my other hand tapping against the headset. Then I shrugged, my mind made up. "No harm in just trying it, is there Faye?" I muttered to myself, thinking only I could hear.
"Talking to yourself again?" Standing just behind me, Suzie laughed her tinkling laugh.
I grinned, "You know me, Suze. Ready to do this thing?" I pulled the headset; it was heavier than it looked, onto my head. It was just a band of metal really, one slot on the left side, the game cartridge already inserted. A smooth click and the clear visor slid down over my green eyes, locking into place. This should be fun. A real game where I can be whoever the hell I want to be. Preferably a butt-kicking elf.
"You bet. Bring on those cute boys."
"Boys? What are they?" I grinned. "I'm in it for the epic quests."
"You know the sad thing? I can tell you're not joking." Shaking her head disbelievingly, Suzie got ready to activate her console. "Let's do this. See you on the other side, Faye."

I smiled, with genuine anticipation now, and hit the button on the side of the console.
"Activate game, Fantasy Soul."

When I'd appropriately calmed down, I addressed the holographic figure, hovering in midair. "Sorry about that. Where am I? I thought I'd be in the game now. You know, playing." I said, confused.

The figure frowned slightly. It was a man, I could tell now. He had a rather androgynous appearance, long locks of golden-brown hair obscuring most of his face, a slim figure clothed in long white robes. "I am the Creator. I aid you in creating your character. Please, approach the book."

I obeyed and walked towards the plinth, ascending the three small steps to stand in front of the stand. I reached out to touch the soft cover. 'Character Creation' the cover read. "Are you, well, real?" I asked the figure, who had followed me over and now stood beside me, but at floor level.
"Real?" He tipped his head. "You mean like you? Human?" I inclined my head. "No. I can think, although limitedly, but I am not real. I am but a program. My function is to aid you in creating your character. This is just one of five hundred and twelve conversations I'm currently running."

The man, no, the AI, gestured at the book. "Please open it." My brow creased as I looked at him. I think therefore I am. Ring any bells? Evidently not. I shook my head and turned the cover. The slightly yellowing page appeared to be empty, but as I watched a title appeared. 'Character 0002015' and underneath a question appeared, scripted in italics.
'Please select a gender.'

I glanced up at the AI. A gender, huh? You mean we get to choose, I thought this game was aiming for realism. Though choices are nice, I guess.
"Please select your gender, male, neutral and female." As he spoke each word, a wire figure appeared in front of me, hanging in the empty space. I scrutinised the three holographics. Neutral. Well, I guess it's becoming more of a recognised thing. People who undergo surgery to become neither gender.
"Does which one I pick affect my game play?" I asked, wanting to be sure.
"Only your appearance."
"Okay." I frowned; the choice should have been easy. But it wasn't. Male, I instantly discarded. I didn't want to attract women. Actually, I didn't really want to attract anyone. Fretting, I weighed up the pluses. With neutral, I don't get hit on, right? But female characters generally get treated easier. Hmm. I guess I should just go with whatever I feel more comfortable with. "Neutral," I said slowly but firmly. Looking down at the book, I saw that the question had been replaced with an ink sketch of a figure standing straight. Already being written was the next question.
'Which race would you like to play?'

"Okay, let's get this done." I cracked my knuckles enthusiastically.
