The year is 2159, earth's resources are running dangerously low and fear grips the world as it is unknown what the future holds in store for them. In a desperate attempt at new and steady resources various nations send brave men and women into the depths of space to find what is in high demand on earth; water, energy sources, iron ore, copper,...
The United Nations Spaceship Romulus is the first of many built and manned for such an expidition. However the crew of such an "adventure" is trained and tested to the limits of their capacity for a trip such as this could prove disastrous for all those involved and every member must do what he can when he can.
The engineers must make sure everything keeps working around the clock or it may cost the lives of many. The information systems technicians ensure all the software doesn't haywire and cause the air filtering system to break down. The security crew is tasked in keeping the peace. The security chief watches that his men, being stronger than the average crew, don't get too crazy ideas about starting a mutiny. The doctor does what he can to make sure no one loses a limb... or their mind.. The communication's officer guarantees that all messages go through and arrive... eventually. The flight officer ensures they don't accidently fly too close to a sun or planet and get stuck in its gravitational pull. The quartermaster keeps a close eye on the cargo so no vital gear and supplies go "missing". And the captain and first mate keep the entire rabbel in order.
Simple tasks for those trained to do it, you may think, but the average back and forth trip from earth to another planet takes about ten years. Ten years locked in a metal container floating through absolute nothing, locked in it with the same people day in day out. Doing the same routine every day, taking your free time in the same places every time. Watching the same movies, reading the same books and listening to the same music over and over and over...
A lot can happen in ten years and in space... no one is going to stop it.

To clarify the intent of this RP: This thread will focus on the relationships between crewmates locked together for extended periods of time as well as personal strifes and triumphs.

Name:
Viktor Adler

Age:
26

Position:
Security

Character strengths:
As a security guard he was thorougly taught to be both patient and composed; the last thing one wants to happen is make a rash judgement call or get a bit too violent onboard a place where the slightest disturbance could create major consequences.
Besides that he mostly keeps himself busy reading for he finds it easier to take his time with one book and spend several weeks on it rather than spend an hour or two on a movie and end up seeing it five times by the end of the first week.

Character flaws:
A negative side effect to his line of work is that he became more and more isolated from the rest of the crew, other security included. He found that people without power tend to distrust those with, especialy the ones who cary the weapons. To top his isolationism off is the fact that over time he became more and more suspicious of those around him, often searching for the catch in every deal even when there is no catch.

Biography:
Grew up in a backwater town in the German part of Belgium, he quickly set his sights for greater things and once he came of age enrolled in a training camp for those willing to see if they had what it takes to be part of a spacecrew. The training for security is considered the easiest of all training for such a venture, with it being the only one in which you are not required to have several higher degrees in mechanics or technology, and as such the bootcamp was packed upon arrival. However, over time it quickly ran empty.
Viktor never quite stood out amongst his fellow trainees, always scoring enough to pass, but too low to be glorified. Even at the end he graduated as number thirty-five out of a class of fifty. He didn't mind at all, he knew they would all get jobs on board one starship or another. Many of his classmates chose to become MP's on military ships, but the military life was nothing for Viktor and he decided to go more into the private sector. He was surprised when he got accepted into one of the first mining expositions of the UN, but all the while was happy to be able to rake in a fat pay check when he would come back in ten years.

Other:
He is known for smuggling certain things onto places he's not allowed to. He did it during his training and you can bet he did it before entering the ship.

Name: Jon DeLibri

Age: 52

Nationality: Italian

Position: Doctor

Character strengths: Quick-witted, fast-working, relatively optimist

Character flaws: Can't really fight well, no one has seen him at his worst.

Biography: Still young at heart, Jon knew since he was very young he belonged to the stars. He grew up fond of the idea. Of course, his parents being pressuring, they wanted him to be a doctor. So after several studies and two doctorates (psychology and surgery), he signed up, and his qualifications landed him a posting on the Romulus.

Other: Can be slightly mean to people at times, but never in a bad intention.

Picture: None. I suck at drawing. Picture a short, balding man with relatively pale skin, a pepper-and-salt beard, blue eyes and a very thin nose.

Do you mind putting in a a bit more detail? It's all a bit bare bones, wouldn't you say?

Not really. I like fleshing out my characters more through roleplay than through the sheet - else there's nothing much to say or do in the downtimes.

Name: Asra "Bishop" Beriya

Age: 29

Nationality: Arab/Russian

Position:
Communication Officer

Character strengths:

Intelligence
Asra scores highly in most test and situations that require thinking. She is quick to determine results when thinking in a scientific point of view. She is what you would call 'book smart'.
Eidetic Memory
One of the reasons behind her intelligence. Asra has what you would call a photographic memory. She can easily recall past situations, sounds, images, or anything to do with the five senses in a matter of seconds. This can be beneficial and a curse all in one go. Some things she can never unsee.
Controlled
Because Asra is a calm mannered person, she is often calm in the worst of situations. She reacts differently than most people, often keeping the same emotionless face.
Character flaws:
Perfectionist
As the communications officer, Asra must predict what to disclose to the others and what not. She often puts too much thought into this, sometimes putting too much or too little detail for the sake of preventing a dispute over something. She always wants to get things right, and that can be her downfall.
Cannot empathize well
Asra is incapable of sympathizing with others well. She does not have the same grasp on life that others do, nor does she have the same desire for material objects. One might consider her a psychopath since she cannot emotionally relate to a people, but since she is not antisocial or violent, she cannot be labeled as such.
Naive
Since Asra thinks on a completely different level than other people, she can often get convinced to do weird things as long as they make some sense. If the reason is feelings, she may do so just to humor you and to avoid pointless chatter or conflict.

Biography:

Asra is the product of an Arabic male and a Russian female. She never knew her father, and she never cared to. Her mother was a quiet woman who never had time for Asra, so the young girl spent most of the time reading books, watching the news, and playing chess. Her favorite piece was the bishop, mainly the reason why some people call her "Bishop".

She went abroad to America for schooling all by herself at the young age of 5. She was taken care of distant relatives who wanted nothing to do with her either. After graduating from college at the young age of 19. She studied in psychology, communication, and logistics. She, of course, was unique in her abilities and mindset, which helped benefit in her studies as well as get the attention of those who could help her along the way.

When her mother got sick with cancer, she moved back to Russia to take care of her. Unfortunately the elder woman died, and Asra was left without a purpose once more. For a while she worked as a tactician, but eventually edged back to a communications in Russia. Somehow in the whole gist of that work line, she ended up with the UN. From that she kept to human resources, but somehow ended up as the communications officer for the impending space trip.

Other:
She has an odd wardrobe.
She loves chess.
Delayed reaction towards pain.
She can speak
English
French
Russian
Some Farsi

Picture:

Stands at the height of 5'1.
Weighs approximately 112.8 lbs.
White hair
Yellow eyes
Multiple piercings

I'm very interested, if you need any more from me after this just let me know and I'd be happy to provide.

Name: Irving Savatier dit Laroche-O'Toole

Age: 25

Nationality: French Canadian

Position: Engineer

Character strengths: Irving is very familiar with the propulsion systems on the ship, having been part of the crew that helped put them together. He also has enough knowledge of the other mechanical systems to make repairs if the other engineers are unable or even don't arrive on scene quickly enough.

Irving is also always willing to help wherever he can. If nothing needs fixing, he's constantly trying to make the trip easier for everyone else. It's partially to help relieve his own stress, but mostly to make sure everyone else keeps their sanity. He knows he's more or less a repairman most days, and thankfully there aren't often big problems to fix yet, but the journey is still young.

Character flaws: The happy-go-lucky, helpful and carefree attitude Irv carries is used to hide his major paranoia that the whole ship will fall apart if everyone isn't careful. Because of this, he often finds himself chastising people for minor things like leaning on certain pipes or being too hard on equipment when these instances are rarely real problems. In doing so, he has earned himself a nickname among some: "The Tool."

Truth is, he has an anxiety problem that was able to go under the radar because it has never been as bad as it is now. So far it isn't a huge problem, but sometimes being so closed in makes Irv's chest tight and head fuzzy. He hasn't yet revealed this to anyone.

Biography: Irv, as he is often called, was a big surprise when his mother found out about him. After all, her only expectation while studying abroad in Europe was to bring back more experience under her belt. She did, of course, but much of that experience was with a charming Irish boy who studied with her in Switzerland. What was even more unexpected was that the Irish boy decided to stay with the expectant mother of his child and move back to Quebec. And so, unto them - them, in this case being Valerie Savatier dit Laroche and Gregory O'Toole - little Irving was born to their lovely new home just outside the city.

Being the son of an astrophysicist father and a microbiologist mother, Irving was lucky to be well educated. His parents decided to avoid public schools because they needed their son to be taught quickly. The world needed it. His parents were aware of the dangerous downward spiral going on with Earth's resources, and dreamed that one day their son would have a hand in fixing it.

Irv learned well, though he didn't end up following the path his parents had planned. Where they wanted him to help push for colonizing a new planet, Irving, a now young man found himself uninterested in the politics of the situation and instead honed his skills toward engineering and repair for spacecraft. Though he had no high place in design or oversight of construction, he did find himself helping build the massive U.N.S. Romulus and learned its systems well enough to land an interview for a resident engineer position. He was too young to be the head in engineering, of course, but his experience with the ship proved as useful as his well of mechanical knowledge.

Other: Irving's accent is strange, being mostly French Canadian with a hint of the harsher edges from Irish. He gets embarrassed when people poke fun at it. He gets along with people well enough but due to his rising anxiety will often find himself hanging out near the engines where most people are not.

I really really REALLY hope this is still going on. Mainly because I love the pretty set up more than anything. I'm a sucker for ranking and lists.

Oh, wow, didn't even notice the gap between the beginning and our profiles. I hope so too.
