She hadn't been mistaken. There were Blackthorn forces here, slowly trickling in, perhaps not to cause alarm, most likely to set up a perimeter before they made their move. What such a move would be...the blond could only guess at and she didn't like the ideas her imagination came up with. She'd semi kept up with the news and so far, Alex knew that these protesting rallies had been left alone by her uncle, but it had only been a matter of time before he retaliated and made an example of these people.

That it might be today created a tightening knot within Alex's stomach, her lungs feeling constricted as she looked around quickly, uncaring if she looked frantic or not. If questioned, she could say she had lost someone or that she was claustrophobic or something., but right now that was hardly on her mind. The truth was that her black eyes were catching an increase of uniforms in every direction and the blond was trying to pinpoint an opening to slip past them, but the crowd was growing restless, finally taking note of what was happening around them.

Took them long enough! Or maybe too soon...

The people around her were packing in as more of Blackthorn's forces showed up, starting to herd the large group into a tighter cluster, already preventing people from leaving. Alex could hear yelling, fights already starting to break out on the edges of the crowd and those within the inner circles were starting to understand something was very wrong, growing fearful, questioning and Alex could nearly TASTE the panic building around her.

Her own state wasn't much better as she could feel the building energy around her, soaking into her skin, purifying within her, growing with intensity the longer she stayed in this situations. A situation she couldn't escape and one that was quickly escalating out of control as the Blackthorn group started in on a bullhorn, announcing that everyone here today was to be detained for questioning.

And then all hell broke loose.

When Helaina heard Veronica mention the Resistance, she knew she had a keeper. "You know," she spoke casually, "it's getting pretty crowded here. If you want, we could go to a more-private spot to talk." She didn't wait for an answer because she already knew the young girl was hooked; as such, Helaina began making her way through the mass of people, confident that Veronica would follow.

She made it to her destination at the furthest edge of the Center Square before turning around. Surveying the throng of people congregating in front of the amphitheater stage, Helaina was shocked to see dozens of soldiers in Blackthorn uniforms forming a barrier that prevented the protesters from leaving. She could hear yelling and then there came an announcement via a soldier with a bullhorn saying that everyone would be detained for questioning. Thinking quickly, she formulated a plan of escape, then turned to Veronica. "Crap's about to hit the fan." Helaina didn't mince words. "Come with me. I can tell you about the Resistance and get you out of here." Then, for the second time that night, she took off without looking back. She hoped the young woman would follow her, but she couldn't risk getting caught in whatever hell was breaking loose down in front of that stage. Once she got back to her house and into her surveillance room, she would watch the unfolding events in safety and determine what her next move would be. A quick backward glance over her shoulder confirmed the disintegration of the peaceful protest and Helaina could have sworn she saw something that looked like electrical sparks emanating from one spot in the crowd, but there wasn't time to double-check. Her hurried walk turned into a full-out run as she saw her car parked a couple hundred yards in the distance, and as she ran, Helaina didn't look back again.

Veronica followed after the woman to the outside of the crowd, curiosity bubbling at the forefront of her mind. She wondered what the woman wanted to talk about. She was about to ask her something but was interrupted when a bullhorn sounded. "What-" She was once again interrupted by the woman telling her, "Crap's about to hit the fan."

Veronica's eyes widened when she saw what was happening and didn't need to be told twice before she hauled butt after the adult. "Wait!" The young woman shouted when she tripped over herself. Dammit! Stupid legs! She pushed herself back to her feet and was catching up to the woman when saw that they were heading for a parked car. "Oh good, you've got wheels." She breathed and ran faster so that she could completely catch up with the woman.

When they reached the car Veronica turned around and saw that a few of the Blackthorn soldiers were heading their way. "Oh crap!" She cried out and stared at the Other woman. "Open the doors, open the doors!" She ordered the older woman while tugging on the passenger door frantically.

Screaming, shouts, yells, they all echoed in her ears, a tornado of sound that overwhelmed her senses. Bodies pressed in tightly and Alex felt hysteria stirring quickly at the edges of her mind as she tried to find a way out, tried to avoid the violence that had broken out, tried to simply breathe.

Everyone here was an Other and while the majority of the population had lower level powers ranging in the Level One to low Level Three range, every Blackthorn soldier was required to be a high Level Three, Four or Five and such powers were dangerous, usually geared toward violence as it was. Now they were being unleashed on Others who were trying to resist, but most did not have the power do so and the soldiers were taking every excuse to exercise their authority.

And Alex was caught up in the middle of it, doing everything she could NOT to use her powers. She couldn't. If she did... The blond clenched her fists, nails digging into her palm nearly to the point of drawing blood as her eyes started to seep a dark red, to glow despite her best efforts and she attempted to push and shove her way out of the crowd, to the edge in hopes that she might be able to bolt.

Her hope was in vain, though. Completely so as her control started to give out and people, even in their panic, started to take note of the sparks coming off her body. Every Other was wary of fire-controllers and at first they assumed that's what she was. And when they realized she wasn't...they started to panic once more, giving her more space than she knew what to do with, space that attracted attention and the soldiers took note, as Alex knew they would.

She stared at them and they at her, and recognition came over their faces. Perhaps not recognition for who she was, but WHAT she was and those in front of Alex started to advance, glow-nets of blue plasma-shields activating from their uniforms, intent on making sure she didn't escape. Red eyes watched them advance with growing fear washing over the blond's face, but she kept control. Sparks were flying around and off of her as if she were a live cable that had been cut, but the energy wasn't harming anyone.

She was keeping control.

And then someone grabbed her from behind and another soldier came to help the first and Alex's world narrowed to two all-consuming emotions: fear and anger. Time seemed to still as the pressure within her skyrocketed and the energy around her drew inward like a vacuum, sparks from all over - from people and plants, even from the power-lines around them - drawing toward the blond, being absorbed by her body.

And then it was all released in a concussive wave of raw, gold-red energy that sent everyone near her - including the guards holding her - flying back several hundred feet, stripping electrical wires and shattering glass as a shrill, nearly banshee quality scream tore itself from her throat.

Thank God for remote access on cars. Of course, it only works if you can find the right button! Argh! Helaina fumbled with the car keys as she approached her blue Honda Accord at full speed. Dashing around to the driver's side, she paused for a moment to catch her breath but was thrown into action once more by the insistent urging of Veronica as she tugged on the passenger door and the sight of two Blackthorn soldiers giving chase. Dang, she's fast! She caught up to me! Fantastic! Helaina made a mental note of the skill. In her mind, she was already cataloging the strengths that Veronica would bring to the Resistance. Finding the correct button at last, she pressed it and both women hurriedly yanked open the car doors, slid in and slammed the doors shut. As Veronica locked the doors, Helaina threw the vehicle into reverse and spun around before flooring the accelerator and peeling out of the parking lot.

"Wow! That was NOT what I expected when I showed up tonight!" Helaina let out a relieved chuckle. She hadn't eased up on the gas and, as a result, she made the 17 minute trip in 10. Thankfully, there was absolutely zero traffic, which assured her that no one was following them, and as she made the turn to cross the bridge to her property, she glanced over at the passenger in her car. "So... I'm assuming you've got a few questions. Where do you want to start?"

Veronica didn't hesitate and it wasn't until now that she realized that she should have maybe... thought things through. Well, a little late now, I guess. She could still feel her heart pounding in her chest and her blood pounding in her ears. She took a deep breath to help calm herself and loosened her grip on her armrest. She realized that she didn't have her seat belt on and quickly pulled it across her chest and let herself relax a little bit when she heard the click. She looked at her driver and then locked her eyes on the road. Okay... no this is fine, she's safe. She's not gonna drive me to a secluded place so she can slaughter me. Her lip twitched in amusement at her own stupid thoughts and she shook her head. Yeah, this'll be fine. We're just gonna take a little drive to... somewhere. Yeah, somewhere's always a good place to be when the world's going to hell. She thought with a sarcastic eye roll.

After another ten minutes of driving, Veronica slumped in her seat and looked out at the forested area they were driving through. She jumped when the woman finally spoke to her, "So... I'm assuming you've got a few questions. Where do you want to start?"
Hmmm, that was a good question. Where did she want to start? "Ummm... well we could start with your name..." She drummed her fingers on the arm of her seat and shook her head. "Or you could tell me where we're goi-" Veronica froze mid-sentence as she saw the giant steel gates. "What...?"
Veronica looked over and saw that the woman was holding something that looked almost like a lighter, but before she could ask what it was, the adult set it down somewhere out of Veronica's sight and the giant gates opened.

Veronica gave a slightly impressed hum when she saw the land behind the gates. The forest was enormous and seemingly unending. The car traveled along a dirt path that, if it weren't for the fact that they were driving on it, Veronica would never have guessed was a road. On the left side of the path was a river and Veronica got glimpses of a fence topped with razor wire outlining what she assumed was the perimeter of the property. After several miles of driving, the path veered away from the river and the car was quickly surrounded by trees. A few more minutes went by and then, suddenly, the forest opened up and what Veronica saw was a huge farm. There was a large, sprawling red brick ranch house with white shutters, fencing that penned in horses, cows, pigs, goats and sheep, a large chicken coop with chickens clucking in the yard, multiple outbuildings, two large barns and several garage-type buildings.

Veronica whistled and smirked at the woman beside her. "Woooow, never would've taken you for the farmy type of girl."

The scream went on long past the time Alex should have run out of air and then she abruptly did, the high-pitched, screeching sound cutting off almost mid-escalation. The blond stood there then, silent and shaking violently as her eyes opened, red light splashing across her face as her eyes continued to glow and her hands uncurled from their fisted positions, her body almost relaxing as she looked around with a nearly blank expression, appearing not to register the destruction around her.

Bodies littered the ground, some bleeding, groaning and others so completely still that there was no mistaking them as dead. Glass lay broken everywhere and the power-lines above sparked and hung in shredded remains. Screams still rent the air, those on the outer edges of the crowd escaping significant damage and now running in terror of the blond who had started to walk, calm, collected through the carnage she'd created and the ground broke under her steps, cracks extending in all directions, energy slicing through the concrete as if it were water. Electricity snapped and sparked on her body, red-gold flaring out in all directions and as the Blackthorn soldiers who had only been knocked over began to stir - and still more who had been called in as backup began to show up - and approach her once more, far more cautiously this time, Alex's red eyes narrowed to dangerous, warning slits as she watched them.

There was no panic within her, no fear, no voice of warning. There was only the rage that had taken over everything. The deep, cold, calm rage that had the blond observing the first three soldiers' approach with something of a smile forming across her lips, unfeeling and coy.

They never touched her.

Her power lashed out ruthlessly with a flick of her hand, sending all three flying back into a building, the sound of cracking bones loud in the silence that was falling as people fled and the amphitheater emptied. And Alex didn't wait for the next wave of attack, letting the red-gold energy build in her hand before she slammed it to the ground, her body crouched and the earth bucked, sending the Blackthorn Others around her flying back again with alarmed cries and involuntary gunfire.

Alex bolted then, like a hare before the hunter.

Upon seeing the smirk on Veronica's face, Helaina shot a withering glare at the passenger in her car. "Follow me," was all she commanded before exiting the car and walking to the front door of her home. She unlocked the door and glanced at Veronica, satisfied by the expression that flitted across the youngster's face when hearing the heavy *thunk* of steel bolts moving and falling into place. "Go ahead; open the door," Helaina invited, knowing the weight of the 6 inch thick, bulletproof steel would not be at all expected.

Once inside, Helaina strode quickly to deactivate the alarm system before heading to the surveillance room that was to the right of the foyer. She flipped the light switch and a warm glow immediately suffused the room, illuminating 5 dozen television screens that lined the walls and rows of computers that corresponded to each screen. Helaina did not hesitate, moving rapidly to a computer in the left-hand corner of the enormous room, where she sat in a rolling leather swivel chair and, with a few keystrokes, pulled up a live-view camera showing the amphitheater at Central Square. "Damn," she muttered as the screen displayed carnage unlike anything she'd seen before. "What the hell happened?" Dead bodies were everywhere, along with downed power lines and massive amounts of debris. Oddly, however, was how the bodies and mess were arranged, which was in a circle. At the center of the circle was a broken-up slab of concrete, but despite that, it remained obvious that something... or someone... had been in the center of that circle and somehow caused everything around it to be obliterated. Wow... if that is the work of an Other who is sympathetic to Humans, I want her on my team! Helaina didn't say anything, but she flipped the computer's camera from real-time to pre-recorded and hit rewind. "Let's see what we missed during our drive here, shall we?" She smiled at Veronica. "Not so farm-girl now, am I?"

Veronica followed the farm-girl out of the car and walked over to the door with her. It looked like a normal wooden door, but when she heard the heavy *thunk* of steel bolts her eyebrows shot up in surprise. She had not been expecting that. She ignored the woman's invite to open the door and just waited for her to do it. She was not going to embarrass herself, and with the look the woman had shot her, she was sure she would have.

She wasn't expecting the inside to look anything like it did. She'd been expecting a cozy little foyer, with a couch... or a TV... or something, but this... this was incredible. "Holy crap..." She gasped in awe under her breath. She watched the woman check out one of the screens and slowly strode over to her and tilted her head to peer at the screen as well. To say what she saw surprised her would be an understatement.
"Holy sweet mother of all that is holy! What did that?!" She gaped at the screen but quickly recovered, glaring at the woman when she heard the underlying 'bite me' when she said, "Not so farm-girl now, am I?"
Veronica stuck her tongue out and grabbed the back of the leather chair farm-girl was sitting on. "Just press play." She grumbled, motioning to the paused screen.

Run.

All she could do was run and Alex didn't feel like she could ever stop.

Her body didn't quite agree with her, though and it was several blocks later that she stumbled to an unwilling halt on an abandoned street, the devastation on this block not even under construction at this point. Gasping, drawing in ragged breaths that did nothing to ease the pounding of her heart against her rib-cage, Alex's back found half of a wall and she slid her way down with a whimper, wanting nothing more than to have the earth swallow her whole as she wrapped her arms around her knees and tried to make herself small.

The rage was gone, faded away like ice before the sun, thawing out the shield that had been created around her mind, her emotions. All that was left was a raw, guilty, horrified feeling that sank its claws into her relentlessly, feeding on her fear and reminding her of every failure, every reason she wasn't enough and every death. Oh, it reminded her of the deaths and now it cackled over the newest additions.

Was that woman pregnant, do you think? I bet that man had kids. They'll miss him tonight. I hope their mother wasn't there, too. Everyone has lost so much in this earthquake, with Blackthorn coming to power...guess we can add you to the list of destructive forces, can't we?

Alex clamped her hands over her ears, tears streaming as she clenched her teeth, inner voice a shriek. Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!

Silence, blessed and startling, came for a precious moment, enough that the blond started to breathe, her body hitching with sobs suppressed....and then the inner voice spoke up again, undeterred. No, really, do you think that woman was pregnant?

Alex buried her face in her hands, hands she felt ought to at least show the crime she'd committed, and gave into the wrenching tears as she sat alone on the otherwise silent, forgotten street.

Helaina complied with Veronica's request and started the video that had captured the events at Capital Square. Together, they watched as a blond woman emanating electricity from her body essentially blew away the Blackthorn soldiers. Unfortunately, there were supporters of Humans who also were hit by the concussive blast. The blonde Other turned to face a second wave of soldiers and the hidden camera had perfectly captured her image. "Oh my gosh, I know who that is!" Helaina couldn't keep her surprise hidden. "I met her just last night in an alley! She was helping a Human who had been shot. You know, the one you asked me about." She swiveled her chair around to face Veronica while simultaneously removing her wig in one smooth motion, uncovering her auburn hair. Then, after setting the hairpiece on the desk next to the computer, Helaina ran both hands through her hair as her brain began rapid-firing, making the kind of connections that typically amazed people who were privy to listening as she rattled off her deductions.

"Okay, let's think this through," she began. "Blondie is a Human supporter with a Level Five power. Her first response was borne primarily of fear, but that second response was definitely generated by anger. Her control is lacking, as evidenced by her inability to prevent harming the Others who were protesting Blackthorn, which would imply she isn't completely familiar with what she can do. That means her power is still in the development stage. She has trust issues. I saw that last night and felt it all around her, but we can work with that. Whoo wee... I want her. Oh yeah, she's exactly what we need." Pausing for a moment, chin in hand with her elbow propped on the computer desk, Helaina suddenly remembered she wasn't alone and the stranger standing in her surveillance room still had no idea who she was or what she did. Oh well. There's time to hash all of that out later. Right now, I've got to figure out how to find Blondie. Thank God for the cameras around town. This shouldn't be too difficult. She has to show up sometime and when she does, I will be there to convince her to join the team. Oh yeah... if I get her, Neal Blackthorn won't know what hit him. Shaking her head slightly, Helaina stood and announced, "I'm going to change clothes. Please don't touch anything; I'll be right back." It took her only a few minutes to slip out of the fancier clothes into a pair of well-worn blue jeans, navy blue t-shirt and a black zip-up hoodie sweatshirt. Carrying her ultra-comfortable steel-toed boots, she exited her bedroom and walked back to the surveillance room. Then, sitting in a chair and bending over to put on her shoes, she asked her guest, "What do you think we should do now?"

Veronica stood with her jaw hanging open the entire time. When it ended the young woman only clamped her mouth shut with an audible *snap* and stared at the older person standing beside her. All she managed to say was, "Oh. My. God."
She looked over at Farm-Girl again to see she had taken off her wig and was going on about how she knew the woman on the video feed. Yeah, I saw her too... She wanted to say, but decided to just let the woman keep rambling.

Once Farm-Girl had finished her long rambling Veronica shook her head and stared at her for a few seconds. "Damn, you're smart." was all she managed at first. When Farm-Girl left the room to change, Veronica walked around the room and peered at all the monitors. Hmmm... neat. She smiled and flicked an annoying piece of dust off of a screen.

When the woman walked back into the room Veronica took a couple steps away from the computers. She crossed her arms and pursed her lips when the adult asked her, "What do you think we should do now?" and thought about what FG asked. Before long a giant grin bloomed on her face. "I say we go find Power-Line. I mean, come on she's freaking awesome!" She clapped as excited jitters ran through her at the prospect of having another cool chick to play with.

Finally rising from her seated position, Alex swayed on her feet, pale and red-eyed as she finally looked around at her location. It was really easy to figure out that she had no idea where she was, but maybe that was a good thing. She couldn't go back to the shelter. She couldn't go anywhere uptown anymore. He'd be looking. She had posted a bright red flag on a white terrain and a black message in bold besides that said 'here I am!'. He'd scour the city looking for her and the very thought made Alex shudder as she rubbed her arms and sniffled, wiping the tears away roughly as she inhaled deeply and tried to steady herself once more.

Are you ever steady?

Alex ignored the voice as she started to walk, searching absently for a place to stay the night. She didn't care if it was a crumbled hovel. Anything was better than going back to where she'd been, back into danger. The blond knew she'd have to leave in the morning, get as far away from this place as she possibly could and hope that in time she could stop running.

She was so very tired of running.

Doubling over with laughter, Helaina choked out, "Power Line? Okay, I admit it, THAT is an awesome nickname for her. Much better than what I was calling her in my head." After another minute of hearty laughter, Helaina composed herself and added, "I agree. Let's find her."

Turning her attention to the computers, she moved to the main console and flipped on all but 12 screens in the room. Without looking at Veronica, she mentioned the blank screens with a nod of her head, "Those ones monitor the edges of town. There's no way she's gotten that far yet." She worked at the computer for a few minutes, entering some data, and then, with a swivel of her chair, Helaina faced Veronica and gave some instructions. "Okay, we've got 48 cameras with face recognition showing live feeds around town. I've programmed them to identify Power Line's face if she comes into view. If we can catch sight of her, we can pull her location from the GPS and drive over there. Hopefully, we can then persuade her to come back here to talk." Then, having completed her speech, Helaina swiveled her chair 180 degrees and once again focused her attention on the screens in front of her. Come on... where are you? Come on come on come on... show yourself. She mentally urged the blonde to make an appearance on one of her cameras. Looking over at Veronica, she sighed, "You ever play 'Where's Waldo?' This could be a lot like that."

Veronica glowed with happiness when Helaina started laughing again and wanted to ask what Farm-Girl was calling the blond in her mind, but didn't get chance because FG went onto explaining what she was doing. Veronica nodded in understanding as she soaked up what she was being told and started looking at the screens that were still turned on, while FG busied herself with looking at other screens. When she heard the woman say, "You ever play 'Where's Waldo?' This could be a lot like that." she smiled in amusement and made herself really focus on the monitors.
Power-Line! Come out, come out, wherever you aaaare! She sucked on her lip so that it made that annoying *squeak* sound and looked to another cluster of screens. After only a few seconds she spotted Power-Line walking around and she breathed a 'ha!' as she thrust her arm out to point at the screen Power-Line was on. "There's Waldo." She chirped with a pleased smirk.

She didn't know what drew her eyes to the corner of the building she passed. It was that instinct, that same cursed feeling that had compelled her to go to the rally. It was that same drawing sensation that Michael had always remarked on and now for good or ill it buzzed through her mind like an electric current, bidding her to look around and up. She looked at the corner for the longest moment, a searching frown on her face, head tilted as she tried to pinpoint the reason for her sudden fascination with an abandoned building, but Alex saw nothing and soon enough she was walking again, wondering what the purpose in that action had been, not understanding her own mind in the least.

Maybe you're just losing your mind. That would explain a lot.

It was a possibility, she would agree. Then again, she'd not been sane for a while and anything but emotionally stable.

Well, we all saw that. Though, those dead people aren't really seeing anything anymore...

Alex pushed open the door to an apartment building that had crumbled from the top, toppling over and leaving only four or five levels still intact. The blond knew that such would be good enough for her purposes right now as she searched the dimly lit halls for a room that was suitable for her needs. Most rooms were collapsed in and had water damage, mold growing but she finally found one that was relatively suitable and Alex entered the room labeled 4B on the fourth floor with a slow resignation, sitting on the bed and looking around at the darkening room with dull eyes befoer she laid down on the bed and curled herself into a small form, staring at the wall.

She was exhausted...but sleep eluded her.

"What? Seriously? You found her? Where?!?" Helaina was absolutely shocked and, admittedly, more than a little impressed by how quickly Power Line had been spotted. Following Veronica's gaze to determine which screen she was focusing on, Helaina was able to see the blonde enter a dilapidated, abandoned apartment complex. Grabbing her handheld computer and standing quickly, she reached out and tugged the arm of Veronica's coat, urging, "C'mon, let's go! I doubt she's going to leave, but I'm sure we're not the only ones looking for her right now, too, and I'd like to be the first to reach her. We'll take the SUV this time in case we meet up with any Blackthorn soldiers. It's armored and tricked out for pretty much any situation you can imagine, so we'll have better protection than in the Honda."

The drive to town went more quickly than usual, but not nearly as fast as the drive from Central Square had been. No need to draw attention to ourselves, that's for sure! Helaina periodically glanced at the handheld device she'd brought with her, assuring herself that the blonde Other was staying put. When the SUV was within a half-mile of the apartment building, Helaina parked the vehicle, backing it into a side street where it would remain inconspicuous while also providing a quick getaway, should the need arise.

Looking at her young companion, Helaina coached her about what they were embarking on. "Veronica, I don't know how much experience you have with things like this and I don't want to insult you in any way, but in case you haven't done this much, let me fill you in on how we generally do things, all right? We meet with a potential recruit and talk in generalities about the Resistance. If they seem interested, then we move onto more concrete topics. I don't know who this woman is, but as powerful as she is and as emotionally fragile as she appears to be, I think we need to approach her VERY cautiously. Any questions before we begin our first mission together?"

Veronica followed Farm-Girl to her car silently and climbed in. It looked like any ordinary car, but if she looked close enough she could see a few tiny modifications. As they drove, Veronica's thoughts were filled with ideas on how to approach Power-Line that wouldn't turn out disastrous. She came up with very few, but she wasn't too worried. After all, she did think better when she was under pressure.

After Farm-Girl had given her a quick rundown of what they were going to do, Veronica nodded and then smiled a little. "So this is a mission, huh? Cool!" She unbuckled and hopped -quite literally- out of the SUV. She looked around at their surroundings and then up at the sky -she always had a hard time telling the difference between night and day- to see that the sun was almost completely gone now. Veronica would give it another two minutes before Farm-Girl would rely on her night-vision to guide them.
"Alright FG, follow me." She motioned a hand over her shoulder. She'd need the woman to listen to her, because she knew that night time was the worst time to be outside, and it was even more so when interesting people came into town. Because when interesting people were around, so were Blackthorn's men.

While Veronica jogged through the torn up streets she thought about what they would do if Power-Line didn't want to help out. What if she's not a friendly? What if she was on Blackthorn's side, and she only hurt his men at the rally because she was out of control? Maybe this isn't such a good i- Veronica's thoughts were interrupted when a Blackthorn soldier suddenly stepped out of an alleyway and shot a fireball at her after shouting for her to stop.
Veronica didn't even bat an eyelash or falter in her brisk pace. She simply bent her legs and leaped eight feet over the fire blast and the man, landing quietly behind him and continuing at the same speed she had been maintaining for the last three minutes.

While Helaina didn't typically let a noob tell her what to do, Veronica had sounded so confident that Helaina fell into step behind the girl. Within minutes, she realized an important fact: Veronica had night vision. She was picking her way through the broken-up street without any hesitation; obviously, she could see exactly where she was going. That's going to be a great asset, for sure. No sooner had that thought crossed her mind when a soldier emerged from a side alleyway and a fireball was blasted in Veronica's direction. Helaina didn't have time to do anything and as she watched her companion jump effortlessly at least 7 feet in the air, right over the Blackthorn Other's head and the fire he was shooting from his hands, she mentally cheered. Oh, you amazing girl! I am so happy we met! Then, before the soldier could take notice of her, Helaina quickly but quietly vocalized the words that would activate her cloak of invisibility so she, too, could slip right by the man who stood looking utterly confused at what had just happened.

"Ha ha!" she laughed as she caught up to Veronica. "It isn't often that a Blackthorn Other loses his quarry. That guy might as well sign his own death certificate because he's as good as dead when he tells Neal that he failed to destroy us and, even worse, he lost us!" A wave of pity washed over Helaina, but she pushed it away. As sorry as she felt for those who died at the hands of Neal Blackthorn ~ and she did feel genuine grief for those brainwashed into thinking they were doing a good thing by trying to exterminate an entire race of people ~ this was war, and pity was a luxury she could not indulge in. Shaking her head to clear her mind, she focused on the task ahead.

To her left was the crumbling apartment building that her handheld computer told her still contained the blonde Other they had come to find. Without a word, Helaina tapped Veronica on the shoulder and motioned with her head to go in. The women entered the foyer and Helaina gestured first to the high-tech device in her hand and then held up 4 fingers and pointed to the staircase on the right, indicating that they should ascend to the fourth floor. She waited for Veronica to take the lead, as the girl's night vision would enable them to avoid debris and other potential hazards as they made their way to their destination.

Veronica gave Farm-Girl a quick thumbs up and started to ascend the stairs. She was glad to see that the path was mostly clear of debris and they made it to the fourth floor quickly and quietly. She made her way to room 4B and opened the door slowly, where she saw a curled figure on the bed.
"Psst! FG, it's your turn." She pushed the door open a little more and tip-toed into the room, waiting for Farm-Girl and hoping that she hadn't woken Power-Line. She wanted the leave the waking up job to someone more experienced.
