To Hate A Dragon

Tessa's eyes lit up as the teacher started to quiet the class down. Despite her disposition, Tessa was just as smart as Alonah in English, so she also had no need to focus all of her attention on the teacher. She leaned in close to Mako.

"His name is Ritesa Sumin, one of the most popular boys on campus. Well, until you came." she said with a wink. "He has known Alonah since last year. There was a moment when Alonah was walking home when she bumped into some pervy old freaks in an alley. They started following her and she tried to run from them. One actually caught up to her and..." Tessa let her sentence trail off as she looked over to Alonah who was gazing out of the window with a calm and curious look on her face. Typical, Lonah. Tessa looked back to Mako and shrugged.

"Well, let's just say Alonah couldn't defend herself properly. Luckily for her, Ritesa was walking the same direction and he saw them roughing up some girl. He didn't know it was Lonah til he saw her hair. You know, peach hair in an alley way? That's a pretty big tip off." Tessa stopped to catch her breath, stole a glance at the teacher, then continued.

"To make a long story short, he messed them up pretty bad like. Alonah supposedly grabbed onto him and wouldn't let go for like, 45 minutes or something. She was crying the whole time. Who could blame her though? She must have been traumatized. From that moment on, Ritesa has been looking out for her, both in school and out." Tessa said with a small smile and a shrug.

"That's about it."

At the end of the story, Mako was silent for a moment. He almost felt bad for thinking ill thoughts about him. Almost. But that still didn't explain the odd feeling that he had in the hallway... Maybe his senses were off. Or maybe he sensed someone else. No, that can't be it. I know I was sensing something from Ritesa, but what? He couldn't figure it out, it was a confusing puzzle.

Trying not to seem over-interested in Ritesa, he quickly changed the subject. "Oh wow. Sounds like a... Class act. What about you, Tessa? how did you meet Alonah?"

Tessa tilted her head. She was curious as to why Mako was interested in her and Ritesa so much. Tessa, not wanting to read too much into anything, just shook off the thought.

"I met her around the same time Ritesa did last year; just a month before actually. Alonah and I were in English class actually, and because we were the 2 smartest girls, we could always get out of class early. We both didn't have much to do alone, you know, so we just kinda hung out. Now, she's, like, my best friend." Tessa said, beaming. The classroom began to quiet down as the teacher started lecturing on punctuations and prepositional phrases. Alonah knew the two subjects like the back of her hand. The teacher's drawl was nothing more than an annoying mosquito buzzing around her ear. The sooner this class is over, the sooner I can go to lunch. I'm starving, she thought, remembering that she hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. All because of Mako.

Tessa blinked her large brown eyes at Mako in interest.

"There is one thing about Lonah that I have always found strange..."she said, looking down as if someone were eavesdropping on the conversation. "Everytime I call and ask about her night..she tells me about a dream of some sort of opening in the street. I can never understand her because she always forgets a second after I ask." Tessa explained, a forlorn look on her face. Then, as quickly as the emotion came, it was gone with a smile.

"But that's just typical Lonah."

Mako paid little attention to Tessa at first, as he assumed she had very little of interest to say. He was not interested in her life as he was in Alonah's. He felt a bit guilty for feeling that way, he truthfully did. He wished he wasn't so annoyed by Tessa; she had all good intentions.

Suddenly she said something that grabbed Mako's interest. Dreams... of an opening in the street? She really is the one, then. He tried not to sound as interested as he really was. "Oh, that's odd. She didn't say anything else did she? Everyone has weird dreams, don't you think?"

Typical Lonah.

Mako was starting to get all riled up thinking about how Alonah's life was in danger, and how she did nothing to deserve it. Calm down, Kimimako. You don't want Tessa to start freaking out. There will be a time for your anger, but not here. He had to keep telling himself this in order to not let out a loud dragon roar.

BRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNGGG.

Alonah snapped out of her mesmerizing encounter with the sky as the pale bell rang throughout the room. Wow, that was quick.

Tessa bowed to Mako and ran over to Alonah. It was only a matter of time before Alonah's headache would return. She loved Tessa. Loved her like a sister. But sometimes...she could be a bit--

"So, Lonah. It's finally lunch time. What do you say about me, you, Ritesa, and Kimima--"

"Tessa. You know I only sit with Ritesa and you sit with your fellow girl squad." she muttered, gathering her bags from under her seat. Tessa pouted, pink cheeks puffing out slightly.

"Oh, but, Lonah! Today is special! Today is--"

"I will be eating with Ri and only Ri. Understand?" she seethed. Normally, Alonah could learn how to control her annoyance with Tessa, but that time was different. She was tampering with something that she shouldn't have her dainty little hands in. It wasn't that Alonah was mad at her, per say. She was just concerned for her safety, and including Mako in Tessa's life would be a very dangerous decision.

Tessa's bright smiling face started to fall into a single frown. It nearly broke Alonah's heart, but it was for the best. I can at least reassure our freindship...

"Listen, Tess. Today has just been really rough. I just want to have a normal Friday, okay?"she said, forcing a smile as the two of them left the room. Tessa nodded, her face full of smiles again.

"I understand, doll face. I just really care about you."she said, swinging an arm around Alonah. Even though any other day, Alonah would throw Tessa's arm off in disapproval, she just grinned to her instead.

"Thanks, Tess. That makes one."

The bell. That class went by fast. The sooner I can get out of here the better... He thought to himself as he stood up to walk out. He walked over to where Tessa and Alonah were standing.

"Alright guys, what's ne-"

Before he could finish his sentence, he felt the dark presence again. This time, is was colser, more easily detected. Mako could feel his heart thumping. The presence was getting closer and closer, and then suddenly, Mako felt a heavy hand on his shoulder. He turned slowly around to face the English teacher, Mr. Jackson.

"Hello, mr. Natsuri. It's always nice to meet a new student."

The teachers words were almost mocking, and he had a devilish smile on his face.

"Y-yes sir. Nice to meet you. I need to go." Mako grabbed Alonah's hand and pulled her outside of the classroom, and led her down the hallway. When he was sure they were away from the teacher, he stopped. "I was wrong about Ritesa. It wasn't him that I felt off about, it was most definitely Mr Jackson. I can't believe it took that long for me to notice..."

Alonah stood in front of Mako with an incredulous look on her face.

"Mako. You have honestly lost it, now." she said, shooting him a look of disgust. "Mr. Jackson is my ENGLISH teacher. He's not some dark, evil villain that's out to get me or something! The only thing he's out to get is my essay that's due next month! First Ri and now Mr. Jackson? You're just being paranoid!" she said.

Tessa leaned against the back wall, listening into Alonah's and Kimamko's discussion with wide brown eyes. What are they talking about? Mr. Jackson? Ritesa?

There was a small hint of pity in Alonah's mind as she stood looking at Mako. Even though he looked as though he fit perfectly in the school, along with all of the other students, Mako was far off from fitting in. Alonah understood that finally as her pity filled eyes looked at Mako's.

"I'm sorry, Mako. But it think it's best if you just leave. I appreciate what you're doing, but I don't think you should stay in sch--"

"Lonah." a voice called from down the hall. Alonah closed her eyes, knowing that Ritesa was getting rather impatient. Tessa, meanwhile, clutched at her heart. Oh my...

Finally opening her eyes again, she shrugged at Mako.

"Sorry. I have to go now."

"I'm sorry, Mako. But it think it's best if you just leave."

The words hit Mako like an atomic bomb. First he was stricken with a feeling of extreme sadness. He was only trying to protect her, why couldn't she understand? And now she wanted him gone? It was something he just couldn't understand.

"No, Alonah I'm not cr- You have to listen to me!"

"Lonah."

The arrogant and impatient voice racked Mako's brain. He stood there, fists clenched tightly at his sides as he watched Alonah walk away. The sadness was now gone, and instead replaced with an intense burning anger. He first imagined what Ritesa would look like after a swift fist to the face.... Wait. Are you Jealous Mako? Maybe she's right, there just might be something wrong with me. He thought, though he was still angry. If you want to go of and get eaten and torn apart then you be my freaking guest. See if Ritesa will save you then, and I won't be there to...

"Excuse me, mr Natsuri."

A voice interrupted his mental rant. It was Mr. Jackson.

"Please come with me. I need to review some transfer things with you..."

The teacher grabbed Mako's arm with suprising strength. "What are you- Get off me!" He tried to pull away, but was caught with the other man's arm covering his mouth. He escorted Mako like this all the way to the stairway, and up onto the roof, where Mako was thrown down.

"Who are you." Mako said angrily as he stood up

The man let out a devilish smile, the same from earlier. "Why, I'm your teacher, Mr. Jackson."

"Don't toy with me." Mako's eyes were an extremely dark green now.

"My name is Ryan Neer, I am a chameleon of The Order. We specialize in-"

"I know what you specialize in. You take the image of another person, and use the image to get close to your target."

"Very good, Kimimako. They weren't lying when they said you were well informed."

Mako didn't reply before charging at the man and throwing his right fist. Neer blocked it easily, but did not see the left leg that was coming next. He swept Neer's legs out from under him, knocking him on his back against the roof. "What I don't understand," Mako started, "is why you went after me, and not the girl."

Neer smiled and laughed. "What makes you think we aren't going after the girl?"

Mako's eyes widened. "Ritesa..." He muttered under his breath. He turned to run and find Alonah, but was grabbed by Neer before he could get away. Neer finally transformed into his Dragon form, he was large and green, and with Mako in his claws flew up above the clouds.

I'm going to do it. I'm going to...wait. No. No, I'm not! I refuse! I shouldn't have to! It should be HIM to do it, not me! But...I did start it...I might as well--No, Lonah! No, no, no, no ,no! You did what you had to do!

A fork stabbed angrily into the squishy concoction that was meat loaf on Alonah's plate. The food was barely touched and the only thing that could be seen were 3 simultaneous hole marks punctured in the meat, bread, and pineapples. It was actually a surprise that her milk carton wasn't punctured either. Alonah stabbed once again at her food, still thinking about whether she should apologize to Mako or not. Half of her felt bad for the way she reacted. He was only trying to protect her; from what, she didn't know. And how did she thank him? By telling him that he doesn't belong in the school.

Then again, he was only blaming random people left and right of being "off." It was a shock to her that he hadn't blamed Tessa yet! She might have been right. He might have been too paranoid about whatever was going on with him and those other dragons. Besides, if he wanted to "protect" me so bad, why wouldn't he just tell me what's going on for once?! She sent another, more forceful, stab into her meatloaf. Ritesa only looked at her, bringing his fork full of pineapples into his mouth.

"You know, Lonah...if you keep stabbing your food, someone might think you could be a potential sieral killer."

"Not now, Ri." she muttered, twirling her fork around her pineapples. The cafeteria was so loud and bustling; she could hardly hear herself think. Suddenly, she felt a hand grab her own hand when she went to stab an article of food again. Her eyes traveled up to meet Ritesa and he tilted his head.

"Somethings wrong."

"Obviously."

"Want to tell me about it?"

"No."

"If I say please?"

"I'll say no again."

Ritesa sighed loudly and pulled Alonah up by the hand he still held. Alonah wasn't too thrilled about being torn away from her uneaten lunch, if she was even going to eat it.

"What are you doing?"she asked, letting herself be pulled away by Ritesa. They both traveled over to the tray bin, emptied their trays, and placed them on the top rack. Not letting go of her hand, Ritesa didn't bother to answer her. Now, Alonah was starting to get really annoyed. First Tessa and her annoying nagging. Then Mako with his ridiculous accusations. And now Ritesa with his stupid mysterious secrecy. The two of them headed out of the cafeteria and into the main hallway. The instant the doors were closed they were engulfed in a desolate silence. That was a plus for Alonah.

Ritesa led her to the hallway closest to the back exit. They passed rows and rows of lockers until they finally reached his own, 482. Alonah leaned against the one beside it and blew an aggravated breath to get the hair from her eyes.

"What now, Ri?"she pressed. Ritesa opened his locker and took out a few books that he needed for his next class.

"I just came to get some things." he answered.

"And why did I need to come? I wasn't actually quite done eating, you know? I was really in the mood for that mea--"

BANG!

Before her sentence could be finished, Ritesa grabbed the back of her head and smashed it wildly into his open locker door with a loud bang. Alonah didn't even see it coming and she limped over his shoulder. After that loud noise Ritesa knew that someone was bound to come investigate. So, in one quick movement, he hurled the unconscious Alonah over his back, and sprinted out of the back exit.

Neer flew up above into the sky until he knew they were concealed by the clouds. He was holding Mako, who was still in human form, by the neck. Neer tossed him into the air, and then whipped back around with his massive tail, sending Mako flying. In a bur of clouds and blue light, Mako transformed, spreading his wings to stop his descent.

"I don't have time for you. I'm gonna beat you down, and then find Alonah and beat your partner down too." Mako yelled, and then let out a roar as he charged Neer. Just before Mako attacked, the Green dragon before him changed into a familiar 18 year-old, peach headed girl. "Mako, what do you think you're doing?" The voice sounded exactly like Alonah's.

"Sorry, coward. That's not going to work on me." Without hesitation, Mako slashed the figure with his massive claws, a direct blow to the torso area, and then the illusion faded.

"What kind of heartless animal are you?" A weak Neer muttered.

"I'm a dragon, stupid." Mako replied, cold and emotionless. Neer then fell back into his human form, and began falling to the ground. As an act of pity, Mako grabbed the man's body, dropping it on the outskirts of the city. He morphed back into his human form, and ran sprinting towards the school. He arrived just in time to catch the fake Ritesa carrying an unconscious Alonah through an alley near the school.

"Game's over, punk. Give me the girl and you won't end up like your pathetic partner."

Ritesa, or what appeared to be Ritesa, stopped in his tracks, a limp Alonah hanging sluggishly over his shoulders. He swirled around slowly to face Mako. However, he didn't seem to appear frightened or intimidated in the least. His cool blue eyes grew sharp and he wore a mocking smirk on his face.

"Neer was defeated that easily, huh? How pathetic."he muttered, circling Mako coyly.

"You know, it's like I told them: Never send an imbecile to do an elite's work. But of course, who would listen to me? They believe that I was too soft for this job. Too...'upper class' for this kind of mission."he said with a low chuckle. His cycle around Mako finally ended when he faced the black haired boy, his smirk now an unstable sneer.

"They....were...wrong." he seethed, eyes wide and maniacal. In one second, a brown light burst forward, showing the Ritesa's transformation into a tan dragon. It's back were covered with spikes and it's tail split in two at the end. He was an unique dragon, one of the elite's of the Klaix. The look on Mako's faced confirmed that he knew this also. Alonah continued to lie immobile in the claw of "Ritesa."

"Now, Kimimako. Face a real dragon!"he bellowed and let out a fierce roar which quaked the ground under his feet.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know, you can always write what this guy says or does. ^_^ I don't mind! I understand that it might be a little tough only writing in Mako's actions while you're fighting someone else! I'll just follow along to the best of my abilities.
[Ha, okay, that's good. I was wondering about that myself! And sorry for the lack of posting lately, I've found myself suddenly very busy...]
"You're insane. For one, if you're still following the commands of The Order, then you're a fool. Also, I know the tricks you chameleon's use, and they won't work on me." With that, Mako transformed into the large dragon he was, and charged the chameleon, hovering just slightly off the ground. Like before, the chameleon transformed just before the two converged. This time, the chameleon took the shape of Mako himself.
"I told you, that won't work!" Mako roared angrily, and lunged his large mouth to bite the imposter. Instead of standing there shocked, the imposter was able to dodge most of the blow, only sustaining damage to his arm. The imposter was also able to maintain his dragon form, though his arm was bloody and cut up.
"I see. This is how you managed to defeat Neer, then. I am more experienced than he. I suppose I will just have to go deeper."
"Shutup!" Mako was angered one more, and charged again. The Chamaeleon transformed again, this time to the appearance of an 18 year-old blonde headed girl. Her eyes big and brown. Her arm was bloody, and she was calling out for help.
"Mako... please... I'm hurt. Will you help me?"
This time Mako stopped in his tracks, dumbfounded look on his face. "Em- Emilia?"
WAM!
Mako was hit with a huge tail to the chest, sending him flying against the wall, which he cracked when he hit. He could hardly stand up, he was mesmerized by the girl who seemed to be standing before him.
No worries. ^-^
WAM! CRASH! RAAAWWWRRR!
A symphony of noises blared through Alonah's head. At first, they seemed faint, but then they grew louder and louder, until they were practically blasting in her ears. She didn't(or couldn't) open her eyes when she finally came to. Everything was spinning in black as it is and surely, opening her eyes would've sent her back into the world of unconsciousness. Everything had to be taken slowly and tenderly in the situation. Even wondering where she was and what was going on was a sure fire way to send her head spinning again.
"....told you, that won't work!"
The familiar voice swam through her head and her eyes cringed, opening slowly. Mako? The first thing she could make out was the small individual pebbles spread across cement. That came as a puzzlement to Alonah. Wait...wasn't I at school..? Her eyes blinked again, slowly. After she took a big exhale, she looked around her and noticed it was still broad daylight; somewhere around noon. Noon...Lunch. That's right. I was supposed to be having lunch with--
Suddenly, a blast of memories came rushing back like a tidal wave through Alonah's already sensitive mind.
"What now, Ri?" "I came to get some things." "--really looking forward to that mea--" BANG!
Ri...
All of the memories flowed as one giant ball of thought that it nearly knocked her back out. But Alonah was a little bit stronger than that. She knew that there was something wrong when she first woke up on the ground. Then, as if that tip-off wasn't enough, she heard Mako's voice yelling angrily. Alonah was always aware of things, and this time...she knew she had to be conscious.
"I see. This is how you managed to defeat Neer, then. I am more experienced than he. I suppose I will just have to go deeper."
"Shutup!"
She couldn't recognize the first voice, but she definitely knew the second.
"M..ako."she whispered, trying to gather herself. After blinking a few more times, she was finally able to see everything perfectly. Next, however, was the noises. The grunts, roars, and slashing of wind indicated that Mako must be in his dragon form. Either that...or someone else was. Alonah had about enough of not knowing and confusion. She looked up and saw 2 horrifying sights.
Mako, or what appeared to her as Mako, was compressed against a horribly cracked wall. He held a shaking hand on his chest, and, judging by the way he was hunched over, he hurt it pretty bad. Alonah caught a far off look in his green eyes, which were doubled in size. Alonah felt a small, stinging pain somewhere in her chest as she looked into them. Then, out of the corner of her own eye, she noticed a girl, about the same height as herself, with blond hair standing a short distance from him. Alonah couldn't make out who it was due to the fact that her back was facing her. The girl held a horribly mangled arm, blood pouring from it with no restraint.
It was then that Alonah put two and two together. Mako's large eyes were melted into the girl's face. She came to the conclusion that they must have known one another. The only thing she couldn't explain was the damage that were inflicted on both of them.
What...what's going on...? Who is that? What happened to her? And why is Mako...why is Mako...
"Please, Mako. I'm begging you." the girl stuttered, reaching out her undamaged hand to Mako. Mako's eyes grew even larger and more mesmerized than before. For the first time, Alonah noticed that a streak of blood flowed from a cut on her own forehead. She didn't bother with it though. She was too occupied with staring at the two teens before her. When the girl spoke and Mako reacted that way to her voice, the small sting in Alonah's chest returned.
"M-Mako..?"she called out, her hand shaking on her blood stained school skirt as she tried to straighten herself out, still in a hunched position.
Mako was trapped in a gaze of shock, awe, and utter disbelief, staring at the girl before him, when all of a sudden something snapped him out of his trance.
"M-Mako..?"
"A-Alonah." He choked out the words, feeling the pain from the last blow he took. "Run! You have to get out of h-"
Before he could finish, he noticed huge claw ripping through the air right at him. He managed to roll forward just in time to dodge it. He looked up, the chameleon was in his dragon form again. "So, it seems I've found the weak spot in your past. Everyone has one, if you dig deep enough."
"You... How do you?"
"I told you, I am elite. There is little dealing with The Order that I don't know about. I even know about your little "incident" with the other human girl."
"I'll kill you!" Mako was suddenly re-energized by his burning anger. He morphed back into the giant blue dragon, and prepared an attack. Suddenly Mako was facing the blonde girl again, and Mako froze again. He drifted unwillingly into a memory, one that was obviously painful judging by his expression.
"Mako, what are you doing?!"
"I have to do this. For The Order. I'm sorry Emilia."
"NO! MAKO!"
"I... I can't..."
WAM!
He was hit with an intense force, knocked to the ground, and skid across the pavement, stopping right beside Alonah.
"What... Are you doing? I said get out of here... I'll find you when I beat this guy.." He was obviously weak, and also distracted by the blonde headed girl, who was smiling devilishly.
Alonah clutched at her chest in pain, blood still running down in a small sliver on her face. She looked from Mako to the blond headed girl and back to Mako.
"No. I'm not going an-anywhere!" she said and she stood in front of Mako holding her arms out. She faced the girl who had a devilish smile displayed across her face. Mako was obviously weakened by this girl and judging by the way the person kept changing, that is the exact reaction they wanted.
"Leave him alone! If you want him you have to go through me first!" she yelled, arms still out. The girl laughed, her brown eyes wide and opened.
"Foolish human. You are who we want! And I can easily snatch you away with a snap of my jaws!"she exclaimed. Her voice was like butter but tinged with a dark and evil chuckle. It was like oil and water. Alonah looked down at Mako and tried to give him some sort of reassuring gesture. But his eyes weren't on hers. He was too busy looking at the girl. The singing pain returned but she pushed it out.
"Well then take me, but you leave him alone. Whatever you guys want me for you can have me." She said. The girl tilted her head to the side (it was sickening) and she walked slowly forward to Alonah, still shielding Mako.
"That can be arranged." she purred.
"No." With a sudden will to fight, Mako pushed himself up and walked slowly in between The Chameleon and Alonah, stopping her movement. He wasn't going to fail, he was determined to protect Alonah at every cost. Even through death if he had to.
"Don't be stupid, Alonah. The whole reason I'm fighting is so they don't get you. If they do, I'll have gotten all bloody for nothing. And you..." He pointed at the chameleon, "How dare you bring out a memory like that. You're a pathetic coward, hiding the fact that you can't fight without a gimmick. It doesn't matter now, though. I know how to defeat you."
The chameleon let out an erie laugh, it was a mixture of his real voice and the voice of Emilia. "You think you can defeat me? The only hit you've landed was one I let you have in order to gauge your abilities."
Mako stood there silent, his dark green eyes fixed on the 'girl' before him. He was radiating anger.
"Alright then, if you think you can defeat me, give me everything you've got. Can you destroy a defenseless girl... again?"
That was the last straw. Mako charged at the girl, in human form, while letting out an angry battle cry. The chameleon stood perfectly still, confident that Mako wouldn't attack... and he was right. Mako went to swing his fist, but stopped just before making contact with the girl's face. The chameleon smiled smugly. "I didn't think so. Die, Kimimako,"
Then, unexpectedly, Mako reached out with both hands and grabbed a tail that was flying at him. He then transformed into his dragon form, with the tail already in his claws. "You were right. I couldn't hit you while you were taking the shape of Emilia. But I noticed in your last attacks... When you make contact with me, I can see through your illusion. I also noticed that you prefer to strike with your tail. All I had to do was guess where your tail would be."
The chameleon was trying to squirm free, but Mako's claws just dug in deeper. The wide-eyed chameleon let out a scream of agony. "Goodbye."
Mako raised the tan dragon, and slammed him against one of the walls of the alley, and then slammed him against the other side. He then flew into the sky, and then dive-bombed straight towards the ground, smashing the dragon against the pavement. Both Mako and the chameleon reverted to their human forms when on the ground.
"Curse... you... Kimimako Natsuri." The chameleon managed to choke out weakly between coughs. After he did, his body withered away into a pile of ashes.
Mako laid there on his back, one hand holding his chest. He looked up to Alonah and mustered up a smile, before closing his eyes and falling asleep.
"Kimimako!"she screamed.
That was the first time she had said his first name in a state of panic and desperation, and for some reason, she knew it wouldn't be the last. She had just witnessed the reason why he was with her, why he told her to grab onto him that day, and why he went to school with her. There were people after her. They were after her for something, for some reason, and they were serious to the death about it. Apparently, the girl the person took the form of was someone just like Alonah. She could have sworn she heard the words "destroy another defenseless girl again." Again. That means it happened before. So many thoughts went through Alonah's head. Mako was out to destroy her, just as much as the others were, but he couldn't forgive himself to what he did to the other girl. Even then, when Alonah thought she had it all figured out, she still ran and knelt beside him, eyes wide in fear.
"Kimi.."she started, but he wasn't listening to her or anything around her at all. He wasn't even conscious. Despite her confusion and strength, she sniffed and felt tears burning in her eyes, threatening to pour out.
"Mako....? I'm sorry. I'm sorry for wh-what I said...at school. About you not n-needing to be there. You were right. You were always right.."she choked out, remembering their recent conversations.
"I told you I was going to protect you. I can't risk you being alone, I have to be with you."
"There are bad men out there who want to hurt you. I can't let them do that."
"Alonah. Take care. I'm not going to let anything happen to you, so don't worry."
So much for trying not to cry. A single tear rolled down her cheeks. At any other time she would've wiped it away vigorously, but Mako couldn't even see her. Or hear her. She sniffed again and then threw herself on his chest, sobbing as loud as she could. It was like last year all over again. She was in an alley, afraid of men trying to hurt her, and then when she was saved, she clung to her hero. She screamed again, her head still buried in his chest. She knew he wasn't dead or anywhere near it for that matter. His heartbeat thumped soundly in her ears as she squeezed him harder. Whenever she thought about the other girl, her sobs became a little louder. Whoever she was, Mako obviously felt strongly for her. He wouldn't even attack her or lay one finger on her, even though he knew that it wasn't her. Alonah sniffed again, her tear stained eyes opening up slightly.
"I-if it were m-me...would you have...ripped me ap-apart?"she said, hiccuping through her tears. That did it. Alonah buried her head farther into his chest loosened her grip on him. The blood from her forehead stopped and she tenderly touched her head. The gash was nothing more than a small scratch now.
It was still daylight but she refused to move. She would stay there all day if she had to.
"LONAH!"
Alonah opened her eyes and looked around to see Ritesa and Tessa running up to her, still in their uniforms. When they were both at a reasonable distance from her and Mako, Tessa stopped short in her tracks, throwing a hand over her mouth to muffle out her screams. Ritesa, on the other hand, ran up to Alonah, ignoring the blood around her and Mako. He pulled her from Mako and wrapped her into a large hug, his hand resting on the back of her head.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I should've never left you from my sights. Forgive me--"
"Ri..."
"I didn't know what was going on! One minute I'm walking to lunch and the next I'm in a locke--"
"Ri."
"And to think that Natsuri guy could protect y--"
"RITESA."
Ritesa pulled back and put his finger under her chin, staring at her with deep blue eyes.
"You're hurt."
"I'm fine." she said, snatching away from him. Ritesa just sat there, a dumbfounded look on his face. Tessa had somehow mustered up enough strength to kneel beside the two of them. They all looked down at Mako, who was immobile.
"What happened here?"Tessa asked tenderly. Ritesa didn't say anything, but Alonah knew he wanted to know just as much as she did. I can't tell them. I can't let them know what's going on. I don't want them involved.
"I don't know...We just..well...I just woke up like this." she said softly. Tessa's face fell in depression. She was easy to fool. Not Ritesa though. His eyes pressed into hers. It was as if they could see through all of her lies. Her eyes shifted away from his and landed back on Mako. Unconsciously, she laid her held back on top of his chest, closing her eyes. She could feel Ritesa tense up and hear Tessa sigh in what she thought was either relief or joy.
"Alonah."Ritesa said in a gruff undertone, "We need to go."
"I'm not leaving him, Ri."she said.
"I know, Lonah. But you can't just stay here in a dark alley like this. People might accuse you of murder or something." Tessa said. They were right, of course. As much as she wanted to stay with him, they had to bring him somewhere. The thought of bringing him to a hospital though was stuttering. The doctors would do all sorts of tests on him and possibly find out something about his dragon side. Wait...that's it.
"I'm bringing him home with me." she said with finallity, lifting herself off of Mako. Tessa and Ritesa both exchanged glances. Then, Tessa gasped in realization.
"You're mom is a nurse!"she exclaimed, Alonah nodded and looked down at Mako. After what happened to him in that battle, he might have some damage to his ribs, so she had to be gentle with him. She went down to pick him up but a hand grabbed her shoulder before she could. Ritesa looked down at him and then back up to her.
"I'll carry him. There's no telling what happened to him. Besides, I'm a lot stronger than you are."he spoke, bending down and holding the limp Kimimako in his arms like a child. He was surprisingly gentle with him, despite the feelings he made clear towards him. Alonah's heart lifted as she smile at Ritesa, tears brimming her eyes.
"Thank you, Ritesa."she said. Tessa looked between the two of them and put one hand over her heart. This is going to be a very long year.
The four of them finally made it to Alonah's house on the edge of town. Nadia was still at school but Alonah's mom was always off on Fridays so this was perfect timing. During the entire walk there, no one said anything to one another. Ritesa was to busy keeping an eye and ear out for any sign of movement from Mako. Alionah's head was boggled with the battle, the girl, and Mako. Even lively Miss Tessa was silent, looking off into the distance. When they finally stood in front of Alonah's house, she turned to face the two of them.
"Guys. Thank you. Thank you so much. I really wish I had more I could tell you guys..."she said. Ritesa blinked and Tessa nodded. Ritesa handed Alonah Mako's heavy body as he opened the door for her.
"I'll see you tomorrow. At the park, alright?" he said. Alonah knew he wanted to say more, even Tessa had some sort of clue, but he didn't. He just stood, awaiting her answer.
"Yes."she said. Tessa smiled sincerely and for the first time Alonah smiled back, sharing the same mutual feelings. After a nod to the two of them, she entered in the house, closed the door with her back, and began the process of hauling Mako up the stairs to her room.
Don't worry, Mako. My mom will take good care of you, she thought as she finally reached her room, placing Mako soundly on her bed. She looked down at how peaceful he looked on her bed, but then the memory of the other girl came crashing down into her eyes and she forced herself to shuffle away from him, sitting at the opposite edge of the bed.
It was nearly eight hours since the battle in the alley, and Mako was just now waking up. He opened his eyes, which were hit with a flood of light. He raised his arm up to cover them, and he realized he was no longer wearing a shirt. He looked down at his chest, which was wrapped in bandages. It then occurred to him that he didn't know where he was. He looked down, he was on a bed, in an unfamiliar room, with bandages that he didn't apply.
"Hello?" He called out weakly. He wasn't sure who he was calling, but he thought it was a smart thing to do.
It was amazing.
She slurped up another string of spaghetti and drunk a small sip of water. Nadia was long since gone with her friends and Alonah's mom sat in front of Alonah, eating silently.
"So. Has he awaken?"
"I'm not sure. I'll check."Alonah said, and slurped the last bit of the delicious sauce of spaghetti and then placed her plate in the dishwasher. She hadn't eaten in over a day and Mom made her a fantastic lunch. Feeling a bit replenished from all of the happenings she had been through, she traveled up to her room.
"Mako, I'm back. My mom made some...."her sentence drowned out as she looked at a fully conscious, shirtless, Mako. He blinked at her and she blinked back at him, hand still on the doorknob.
Mako didn't really know what to say. He remembered seeing Alonah right before going out, but he hadn't expected this.
"I... um... Where's my shirt?"
It was the only question he could think to ask. He knew Alonah was going to demand answers from him now, and he knew he had to tell her. He was going to tell her everything, but he would stall it for as long as he could.
